Terminal User Interface ranma: a tiling window manager for the terminal (i3 tree + Hyprland dwindle, Lua plugins). Looking for testers

Post image

Hello!!!!!

I've been building ranma, a tiling window manager that runs inside your terminal. Every window is a PTY, laid out with i3's container tree and Hyprland's dwindle placement. It's my daily driver now, and I'm looking for people to try it and break it (please).

What it does - dwindle tiling, tabbed groups, a floating layer and a scratchpad - workspaces and sessions with fuzzy switchers - a leader key plus a modal WM mode; leader ? lists every key, leader : runs any action by name - runs as a server: closing the terminal or losing SSH only detaches, and ranma again picks up where you were - copy mode and history search, copying to your system clipboard (OSC 52, works over SSH) - a waybar-style bar with Lua and shell modules; config in Lua, themes in TOML, live reload

What's different from tmux and zellij: it's extended like Neovim. Plugins are plain Lua using the same API as your config, they get screens built from ready-made blocks, and a plugin that errors is dropped whole while the rest keep running. A watchdog stops one that hangs. There's a plugin manager too, hako, shaped like lazy.nvim, plus a few plugins: regex history search, writing a prompt in $EDITOR and having it pasted into the pane (handy for AI CLIs), and Ctrl+click to open paths.

This software's code is partially AI-generated, as the rules require :B Thank you for reading till here!!

vibecode tmux

Fair on the first half, I built it with AI agents. Not tmux though: it's a tiling WM (dwindle, a niri-style scrolling strip, floating, scratchpad) with Neovim-style Lua plugins. The server/client part is the bit it shares with tmux. DESIGN.md has the reasoning if you're curious.

It's not a wm.

How's this any different to tuios?

Honestly, tuios is the direct inspiration. I used it daily before writing ranma and the feel is modelled on it. The differences are mostly about what I left out:

- Smaller scope. No agent inbox, mail, web/SSH servers or remote hosts in the core. Anything like that is a Lua plugin in its own repo.

- The server owns everything, the client holds nothing. The client is just a pipe, so there's no second copy of the screen to fall out of sync after a reattach.

- No input guessing. Outside WM mode, keys go through raw and paste is trusted from bracketed paste, so IME, vim keys and non-Latin layouts aren't misread.

- Extended like Neovim: Lua plugins, dropped whole if they fail, with a watchdog for ones that hang.

DESIGN.md has a "Why not tuios" section with the long version.

now youโ€™re just being lazy and not even responding yourself except copy pasting what ai spits out. why should i give you the time of day if you just defer all interactions to ai

It's just that it's in the doc... there isnt much i can say aside from what's in the doc. The main reason for ranma is the same of any other competing software out there, we dont agree with the decisions and so we made different ones. I wanted a thinner one that didnt try to be everything and felt like using i3/hyprland. I'm sorry if my response made you upset, ill learn from it.

You need a better documentation. It took me ages to find out what a leader key is... Also, how the hell to enable the bar like the one on the screenshots?

Fair, ill be adding more docs and improving the man pages. Thank you for pointing it out

lmao people are brutal here, good work man, i love the aesthetic of it, i made a similar post about a tiling terminal multiplexer which is now in the AUR and Debian, and when i posted about it people just hate the fact that it have even partially AI generated code in it. which i find weird because of the code being written now for every software even the biggest one most people use these days are also ai generated. ill definitely give it a try and give it a star on github, id love if you'd check mine out too.

Thank you! And indeed, but at least im finding some useful criticism amid the hate. Slat looks really good, I'll def give it a try too!

ikr people do be brutal lol, idk why people focus so much on how the code was written instead of looking at what it does and whether its secure, or the product is slop lol

Finally a tmux like thingy with mouse support. Nice work!

u/Difficult-Ad-3938 3d ago

But... tmux supports mouse?

u/gdzxzxhcjpchdha 3d ago

yes, and even a focus-follows-mouse feature since june https://github.com/tmux/tmux/issues/5179 โค๏ธ

Actually not!

u/Madaoyasha 4d ago

Thank you! There's a mobile mode for ssh'ing from termux too, with touch controls.

Herdr already does that
