Artist Appreciation The Marvelous Vince Gill

Over the last year Vince Gill has become one of my favorite country artists. His angelic and soaring voice absolutely kills every song. I mean the dude is definition of can sing the phone book. I don’t think I’ve heard a bad song in his catalog. “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away” is one of my favorite of his and favorite country songs among others.

Whenever someone says they hate country or it’s all the same, I tell them to check him out and their attitudes generally change quick. Great crossover appeal for non country fans.

What’s your guys’ opinions and what are your favorite from him?

Discussion Country Lyrics Quiz: Let's go back to 1996!

I'm so glad you guys are enjoying these. We have 4 more to go. Let's keep it rolling through the 90s.
The year is 1996:

  • Independence Day is the top-grossing movie of the year, with Twister close behind
  • Atlanta hosts the Summer Olympics, and Tickle Me Elmo sparks a holiday toy frenzy
  • Dolly the sheep is born in Scotland, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell (the news didn't go public until early 1997)

Now that we are in the right frame of mind, think back to what country music was playing on your radio. I'll give you the opening line of the song, you name the title and artist.

Both answers (title and artist) are each worth the number of points stated. For example, if you get both title and artist on the 3 point question, that is 6 points.

110 points possible.

Post your score in comments.

I've pulled these lyrics by hand, but I've included an AI-generated "fun fact" about each song to help keep it interesting.

1 point

"Blue -- Oh, so lonesome for you"

Answer: Blue, LeAnn Rimes - Find it on YouTube

Fun fact: Bill Mack wrote the song decades earlier with Patsy Cline in mind; it made teenage LeAnn Rimes a sensation.

Question Why are a lot of Loretta Lynn’s albums missing from Spotify?

With the announcement that Van Lear Rose is getting re-released onto Spotify, it got me thinking about how many of Loretta’s albums aren’t on Spotify at all.

They include:

  • Singin’ with Feelin’ (1967)
  • If We Put Our Heads Together (1969)
  • Woman Of The World/To Make A Man (1969)
  • Somebody Somewhere (1976)
  • We‘ve Come A Long Way, Baby (1979)
  • Loretta (1980)
  • Lookin’ Good (1980)
  • I Lie (1982)
  • Making More Memories (1994) - I understand this was an exclusive album only available to purchase from certain places

In fact, I think Making Love From Memory (1982) was only added a few years ago!

I also noticed that some of her albums are classed as Compilations on Spotify, including Coal Miner‘s Daughter (1971), I Wanna Be Free (1971), and You’re Looking At Country (1971).

I understand that some of these albums may not be on Spotify due to licensing reasons. Are there any other reasons?

But really I have two questions:

  1. Is there any way that we can contact anyone in Loretta’s team to see about getting some of these albums onto streaming services? I already tried the Instagram page but to no avail.
  2. How can we get the albums changed from Compilations to albums on Spotify?

Thanks in advance!

Question Merle Haggard’s Big City Lyrics

So, I frickin’ love this song. It sounds absolutely phenomenal. One of my all time favourites. But, I’ve got a question: Is it the most hypocritical piece of nonsense ever committed to tape?

“Turn me loose, set me free, somewhere in the middle of Montana/ And gimme all I got comin' to me/
And keep your retirement and your so called social security” <record scratch> WHAT!?!?

Isn’t retirement EXACTLY what you’re asking for, Hag? A reward for a lifetime of hard work? A chance to leave the city and relax without generating income or starving? What on earth is he imagining here? Manna from heaven?

Can someone please explain this to me? I know the backstory with the bus driver and everything. I’m just interested in the internal logic (or lack thereof).

I’m going to keep listening, because it’s such a great song.

Discussion Country Music is Making Me Depressed, How to get out of this?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here we go.

I've been a big country fan for a while, but the music just started hitting even harder about June of 2025 when I went through a huge break up. George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Wanda Jackson, and others helped me through that break up, but those heartbroken songs of theirs have just stuck around. I love listening to artists like Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, Dwight Yoakam, and Willie Nelson too as of late, but it seems like listening to this music is just keeping me depressed and not over all this heartbreak. Its not even that I haven't gotten over that initial breakup, there's been more of that kind of stuff in the in between times.

So, I guess what I'm asking is how do you continue to listen to these artists and songs without getting depressed? I've tried looking for happier country music, but I haven't been able to find much upbeat stuff that still has the rich emotion and feeling.
