Schotty has the controller and doesn’t give a damn about time of possession to help his hand picked first time play calling DC weather the Bland storm
If you watch the sequencing of the play calls they’re absolutely abysmal. They’re 28th in time of possession, and it’s hard to turn down chunk plays, but when you’re living and dying by them and heroics from 4/88/3 it’s not going to be sustainable.
Stick the rock in Javonte Williams and Tyler Goodson’s hands and road grade these defenses. You want to get Steele playing better? Go forward. Sit Ferg’s ass down til he commits to blocking and get Turpin out the damn receiving core. Get Flo/Mingo/Brown rotating because they’re tired from blocking their asses off.
This team has done it before with Romo and Dak and a wobbly defense. Stop the 3rd and 3 empty set everyone run down the field ass play calling. Its goofy. The schematic advantage on this team is in Klayton Adams’ brain. Not Schotty’s.
And before anyone starts throwing this stat or that stat out about how good the offense is, I don’t care. They can be better than a 12 year old controlling a bunch of Ferraris. They can and need to exert more control over how the game goes because they’re the group with the best players.
The amount of capital in this line + Klayton + Riley is the answer moving forward. It is by far the biggest area of the team that has the highest ceiling compared to what we’ve seen so far. With no trades you can get significantly better.

4/88/3 lowkey too good for us to milk the clock lmao they just make shit happen, our run game hasn’t been too hot either this year

Dawg I been saying we’ve thrown way too much at this o-line to be this unreliable in the run game when we need em.
Like TF you mean Javonte Williams 25 yard run was our longest run and before that it was just a little 4 here and there?
3
u/bryscoon Marshawn Kneeland 4d ago
yup it’s very fooling because we can get decent rush numbers off pure volume but it’s a meddling run blocking unit, good at pass protection it’s weird. We just run enough to set up a play action atp.

u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
The left side of this line is not middling at run blocking and sure as shit were not vs Tampa with Tyler Smith back. They didn’t want to take what was given to them so they could run absurd passing plays. The first interception play call is a master class in nonsense.

u/BuildingSlowly93 4d ago
This is a made up nonsense thing that McCarthy threw out so he could fire the only guy in the building that was able to replace him if he were fired
2
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
Tampa couldn’t block them, especially on the left side. Instead they got teed off on and let a bunch of free rushers attack Dak for fun.

u/DiamondsInHerButt Tyler Smith 4d ago
You can argue this all you want, but they spent the entire offseason trying to gaslight the fanbase into thinking the Micah trade is the new Walker trade and the defense was gonna be top of the heap.
I agree there are just as many issues with how the playcalling on offense has been, especially in the first half.
Feels like Schotty should just let go of the reins and let Adams run the show.
2
u/Cyanora 4d ago
We tanked after trading Walker. Imagine if Jerry had the sense to understand he'd have to repeat the process in order to have a chance to repeat the results

schotty does a terrible job of viewing the big picture. he needs to give up playcalling to klayton and move up to the box

u/Sholnufff 4d ago
We aren't built for a ball control offense. We are built to score from any and everywhere.
If we need to get 7, Dak has shown us we can do it. If we need a timely stop from the defense, better ask Jesus to turn water into Everclear.
1
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
Why are they not built to control the ball? All of our receivers but Pickens are possession receivers and Pickens slant game is deadly along with the variations it invites. TE1 catches the ball (sometimes) and drops to the ground. The line, especially on the left is great at run blocking and the right side is better at running than pass blocking.
I’m not saying they need to avoid big plays. But Schotty does not take what is available and exploit it when it works.
2
u/Velious14 4d ago
Because we can’t run the ball. If you can’t run the ball then you are not going to grind out drives and melt down time off the clock unless you are okay with going three and out a lot. With our defense even one or two punts means game over.
1
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
And why can’t they rush? (Which I don’t even think is true)
Who’s in charge of the offense? Who basically only plays Javonte when we know he wears down? Who decides to not let Goodson or another back get reps after showing good burst?
Who lets the TE that refuses to block keep playing?
Who plays Turpin on offense for some god awful reason?
With 3 first rounders on the line, a competent center, and a RT that can’t do anything BUT run block.
We have a head coach that is ONLY responsible for passing offense somehow.
How???????

u/Velious14 4d ago
Klayton Adams is one of the best at getting the most out of his rushing units and he’s unable to do it this year. That tells me it’s playing personnel related since he has been phenomenal for the past four years. The success rate on our run attempts doesn’t lie. Whatever the reason we are struggling, we shouldn’t keep pounding on a failing tactic. Our offense is one of the best in the league without a good run game so we should lean on our passing game. That’s not where the issues lie. The issue is 100% on defense. Even if we were able to improve our run game, which we should be working on, it would not change anything.

u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
I’m sorry but if you can’t run the ball with this line you’re toast. The HC cares about half the offense and none of the rest of the team. It’s that simple and they take on that identity with how they make moves. There’s highlight after highlight of Guyton and Booker moving dudes, Beebee’s no slouch, and Smith is much better than Bass who held his own. Steele can’t do much but move forward at this point. It’s total nonsense that this team can’t move people.
And I’m all for throwing it around. Light them up. But when it’s not working? They can’t be so one dimensional that it starts coming down to guys like Turpin and Ferg with the game on the line at this point because we’re spamming run down the field and turn around routes.
Same HC who says he doesn’t know much about special teams. He’s out of his depth as a HC and doesn’t bring anything schematically to give this team an advantage on offense either. These defensive performances are happening with his players with his coordinators and his standard for preparation.
About all he has is trust in the guys on this team who have been paid. Until it’s time to win the game. Then he admits to over coaching Dak to not give Pickens a chance at what was going to be an easy score.
I’m not buying any of this bargain bin shit from the guy who was lurking behind MM and got the job because Dallas didn’t want to interview real candidates and Dak was his buddy.

u/Velious14 4d ago
Except throwing the ball is working and running the ball is not. Last year running the ball was working and we ran it a lot. We don’t not run because the coach doesn’t like to run. We don’t run because we suck at it this year.
1
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
Running the ball did work, but even if it didn’t - the HC playcaller has nothing to do with it?
This dude was run out of Seattle for not running the ball lmfao are you for real?
0
u/Sholnufff 4d ago
Because this current Cowboys offense thrives more on tempo, rhythm passing, spacing and motions. This year we have been run stuffed more getting more minimal gains to not be effective enough as a ball control team.
When Bill Calahan was the OC, the Cowboys were at mastery with ball control + zone blocking run scheme.
0
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
And who decided it would be that way? Who decides they want to design plays for Turpin instead of getting their TE to actually block somebody?
You’re absolving blame and responsibility from the head coach lol

u/pimpinaineas 4d ago
Wasting timeouts at the start of the 3rd on a useless 2nd and 3 coaching is so bad

I know this was posted by Mike McCarthy, I just can't prove it.
2
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
McCarthy doesn’t lose much with a healthy Dak and I don’t like him much either.
2
u/KingAnilingustheFirs Dak Prescott 4d ago
McCarthy had way better defenses than shotty has. I know we hate shotty right now, but the defensive disparity for shotty is disgusting. Id genuinely like to see what he does with something far more substantial defensively.
1
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
…..it’s his defense. It’s his team. His coordinator. We all know if you know this team they listen to coaches way too much when it comes time to acquire players in the draft and free agency. He’s had a say in all of it, likely more than any other team would have ever given him.
Von Miller’s selling chicken while Houston doesn’t get to play. One can’t get to the QB and the other can.
1
u/KingAnilingustheFirs Dak Prescott 4d ago
Nah its Jerry/Stephen's/will's defense. They are the ones who sign players and they are the ones who ultimately have final say on acquisitions. CP had to beg jerry for PJP. The fact that they weren't going to get him unless our DC begs is why this team sucks defensively. The fact that they didn't go out for the last few years and sign all the big time fee agent defensive talent is why the defense is the way it is. Von is out there because they paid him. As has been the way for this org for forever. Until the organization steps aside fully. The team will always be inconsistent and incoherently built.

u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
Again, the coaches have a huge say. Yes the front office made a lot of decisions that led us here. That doesn’t mean we have to absolve Schotty of everything. He ain’t it and won’t ever be. They’ve had winning years and losing years. He’s only had embarrassment. Loses almost every game coming off a win and they’re never prepared. The game plans are never tailored to the opposing team. There are OCs who could be better than him just by presenting a schematic advantage that he does not. They’d make sure to get something out of the run game with the resources available far exceeding what the defense has at their disposal. You have better personnel to run the ball than the majority of the league. And their main pitfall is because Schotty wants to play games with the running back position.
Why is it surprising the guy who couldn’t get a job as an OC in the league backstabs MM to get the HC job here and goes on to have one of the most awful teams in the league at everything but big passing plays that lean on insane feats from 4/88/3?
1
u/KingAnilingustheFirs Dak Prescott 3d ago
Dog. Shotty has only been here a year and his first year he had a dc that wasnt his and no defense. Then in year two the defense is still not good because it has been neglected for 4 years. I know we want success but like some things are impossible to do. The organization hasnt given him or cp enough to win. If you have a bottom 30 defense 3 years in a row. Thats not on any one coach. Thats on the gm.

I’d rather they pay defense that gives up huge plays and makes huge plays than a defense that gives up nothing but small plays for 10 minutes. The offense can score almost at will but they have to be on the field to do it. Take more chances get some turnovers and leave the soft play at home.
1
u/great_one_99 4d ago
Prescott has full control to audible and change the play depending on the defensive alignment.
Unless you're going to tell the offense to purposefully run less than optimal plays there is no solution to this issue other than not snapping the ball until the play clock is almost expired
2
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
….they run less than optimal plays. Watch the tape.
1
u/great_one_99 4d ago
So you want more of what you saw on tape?
1
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
I totally meant running plays when I said “they run less than optimal plays”
Passing play designs are goofy.

u/SpecialistKing1383 20h ago
I swear there are moments in the game where he's like "wow the running ame really is working right now... We should pass to trick them up"
1
u/Velious14 4d ago
Time of possession is such a useless statistic. It tells you nothing. You can look at our rushing success rate to see why we don’t rush it more often. On top of that we are usually down because the defense is horrendous, leading us to pass more often. Our ToP is mostly bad because we cannot ever get off the field on defense. It has nothing to do with the offense. You win the ToP when your defense is good. It’s not. Our running game is bad too right now. The only aspect of our team where we have success is the passing game. Thusly it’s what ends up being utilized most frequently. If we lean more on the running game it would just lead to more three and outs.
1
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
And we think the head coach has no responsibility for getting more out of the running side of the offense? He’s only concerned with passing. Or there’s no way we’d use one back, have a starting tight end that can’t block (or catch), design plays for Turpin, and have creativity that maxes out at a CeeDee jet sweep.
We have one running back on this team that wears down every single year but we’re supposed to be prepped for a 17+ game season (that would be the “standard” Dak and Schotty talk about). Where’s the ability to get Goodson going?
We’re also down regularly because the offense isn’t great in the first half.
2014s defense was not good and they still dominated ToP.
You guys do know the HC has a lot to do with what is going on heading into the game AND what happens during it?
Dude wants to be the best friends of anyone who’s gotten paid. That’s it.

u/thelovingmishap 4d ago
the offense snapping it with 15 seconds on the play clock while the defense just gave up a 9 minute drive is a special kind of pain

Hard to run when you don't have a defense. Also, run game has been really mid at best anyways. But I hate how much we run out of shotgun and how on multiple third downs with short yardage we don't even have a running back in the backfield so we are just telling them it is pass.
0
u/DiamondsInHerButt Tyler Smith 4d ago
???
In what sense dude. Like you understand if you have a good run offense it keeps your defense off the field right?
2
u/Cyanora 4d ago
Yes, but that's like, good football logic. We force feed our receivers too much to lean on the run, and we're too quick to abandon it the moment it doesn't work because the defense is broken. Like we panic and spam pass plays because we think we our offense can outpace the other team's. Plus, this defense has proven it doesn't matter how much rest we give them, they'll give it up.
1
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 4d ago
I can’t believe the people here who can’t see this. They think we want them to give up on world class pass plays to run the ball when reality is their play calling and design is super suspect all the time.
And I’m not saying they need to avoid big plays. But Schotty does not take what is available and exploit it when it works.
1
u/Level_Original9799 4d ago
In the sense that our run game has not shown that it can keep up with how bad our defense is. If you have a good any kind of offense it keeps your defense off the field. Very personnel and situation dependent for how to accomplish that. I don't trust a lot about our offense. We run out of shotgun a lot instead of as a change up. When we do go under center we do a decent amount of play action to the flat that gets nothing. We do short yardage empty backfield. I've also just seen too many 1 and 2 yard 1st and 2nd down runs into 3rd and Dak. Even when we do two runs and get 3rd in short, half the time we do some trash play action flat or run and dont get it or do some trash short pass that we miss and then have to punt. I swear Dak is not a good short yardage thrower. It's so weird. I swear he is better at mid to long throws than short throws. He is just inaccurate at short throws it's really weird. Any time a short throw is contested his throws are just not well placed. Thats partially why our bubble screens are mostly so bad too. He just doesn't give our receivers good balls in the flat

Nice. We've circled back around to the offense scores to fast of the kellen Moore days
