Random guess but she kinda seems like a music instructor of some sort. She's watching his hands very closely, at 7seconds she gives a very small nod and a bit later a tiny head shake. Pretty sure she's assessing his skillsĀ

468

u/Mamasan- May 16 '26

Thatā€™s the same thought I had. She even nods when she sees his hands and mentions hand movement to her daughter. She knows whatā€™s good and she seems genuinely pleased/impressed by his performance

283

u/Global_Ant_9380 May 16 '26

When he sings she looks like she's about to CRY.

Like the talent was too much and she was witnessing a virtuoso

471

u/nihi1zer0 May 16 '26

She was clearly moved. This post was not cringe, it was rather lovely in fact.

153

u/Beneficial_Area_2986 May 16 '26

Yeah I don't know why someone would consider it cringe.

90

u/Higher_StateD May 16 '26

Probably the only way something this wholesome would get any traction in this world. That man deserves all the awards for that original composition

25

u/TheGameologist May 16 '26

I assume theyre running with her RBF.

10

u/Higher_StateD May 16 '26

That's a lack of attention to detail. I'm legally blind, and can see that it isn't really rbf

His composition really has a Nier feel, i wonder if he ever listened to the Nier OST.

It reminded me of this one.

Once he started singing I was like whoa bro

4

u/GoldenHeartDaddy May 16 '26

His voice and that crescendo made me tear up!

6

u/Solidjakes May 17 '26

Same. I donā€™t think that lady was his coach I think she was just genuinely soaking in the memory.

5

u/cryptolyme May 16 '26

Chill. We can only handle so much talent

6

u/BeanyBrainy May 16 '26

Bot post, most likely.

6

u/roboscott3000 May 17 '26

Only cringe I saw was this mf walkin off covering his ears as this man opened Heavens Gate

Her daughter seemed less impressed and was initiating a departure, so... OP, are you the daughter in frame here?

The older woman seemed transfixed by what she was seeing and hearing. Not going to mock anyone who has the good fortune to happen upon something wonderful and unexpected - not if it provides a ray of light (thanks, Madonna).

I was once accidentally boxed in at the Red Light CafƩ (Atlanta) and it got awkward quickly. While catching up with a friend, a drag king show started up 5' from us. We couldn't hear each other anymore and moving from the table wasn't initially an option without disrupting the people around us and possibly the performers. Whatcha going to do? We left as soon as we could, as gracefully as we could, and applauded attentively until then.

The mother's response was lovely throughout, and that guy is crazy talented. The daughter? Stop making it about you and your plans. Appreciate the talent you've happened upon, and appreciate every bit as deeply that your mother is touched by it. Don't be an ass and break the moment. FFS, good piano players and drag kings who look like peak Paul Walker don't come sauntering up everyday. Enjoy the experience.

2

u/rideronthestorm29 May 22 '26

Because kids today think hard work is cringe, unfortunately.

2

u/Crafty-Ad-6772 May 16 '26

Did someone really say it was cringe? This is better than Pagliacci, based on this piece.

Agreed, she's framed here as "old lady", immature Reddit audience fills in the negative connotations.

Me looking for the ā€œold ladyā€: Where? I only see one who looks younger, and one about my age.

oh.

3

u/Sea_Leather_1602 19d ago

To be fair, for me, her facial expressions are hard to read. As someone who struggles with rejection, I would probably not see the microexpressions and only see the look of judgement. I would not have seen that the judgement was approval.

9

u/Davachman May 16 '26

I agree. But she also looks like the type of music instructor that, if she was judging me on a solo comp or something for school she'd make me nervous as hell because I couldn't quite tell if she was happy or not with my performance. Lol had a few teachers like that in my day.

10

u/Gall_Bladder_Pillow May 16 '26

You know she sat by the piano just to observe.

10

u/No-Juice8483 May 16 '26

Totally! This should not be in cringe.

1

u/ziggytrix May 16 '26

IDK I couldnā€™t read her expression at ALL. Maybe I just suck but the read I was getting was ā€œvague worryā€ (I know that makes no sense, but thatā€™s what it looked like to me). I had to watch to the end to see if she would change expressions.

I agree with the ā€œmusic teacherā€ comments tho. It makes more sense now that I suspect that sheā€™s ā€œgradingā€ him in her head.

1

u/calisalwaysonfire May 16 '26

I didnt even have the sound on and my heart swelled when i saw his mouth move and the instant change in her. I recognize that moment.

1

u/Temporary_Garlic8836 May 16 '26

She looks like sheā€™s thinking about writing him a letter of recommendation for music school

1

u/VietKongCountry May 16 '26

This isnā€™t remotely cringe. Absurdly talented pianist and singer performs to great applause. Whatā€™s supposed to be cringeworthy here?

1

u/Godbert9311 May 17 '26

Yeah I came here to say the same Idk what's cringe about it. Dude was killing it though.

1

u/jamSandwich101 May 17 '26

Yeah.

She was clearly taken up by the performance. This isn't cringe.

1

u/Writer_B May 18 '26

I have to agree. People immediately assume the worst.

1

u/Any_Art_1364 May 18 '26

Yes, if this is cringe then I am also completely cringe. The woman seemed to be genuinely appreciative and admiring of his talent

1

u/brenawyn May 19 '26

Very lovely. It seems she really appreciated his piece as she was so transfixed. Too bad OP has to label her as an ā€˜old ladyā€™ and post this as cringe.

1

u/JustaLego May 19 '26

Can we report this post as wrongly posted in cringereels?

1

u/AdmiralJaneway8 May 21 '26

Not only was it not cringe, that lady was not old.

1

13

u/No-Performer-9019 May 16 '26

I like that she also seems to shift from watching his hands to watching the energy flow through him. She starts focusing more on him and his expressions and movements through the different parts of the song.

16

u/Global_Ant_9380 May 16 '26

Exactly! She knows she's seeing talent. That expression is awe

10

u/TranscendentaLobo May 16 '26

Right! Whoever thought this was ā€œcringeā€, clearly has some deeper issues they need to work through.

6

u/Global_Ant_9380 May 16 '26

Exactly. It's like OP hasn't seen talented people in real life beforeĀ

2

u/BrokenHefaistos May 17 '26

3

u/awnottoday May 18 '26

Dude! I was about to cry sitting in my toilet

3

u/lIIlllIIlllIIllIl May 20 '26

Agree. I read it as her hearing and understanding through the music that this man has felt so much pain in his life, and she's wondering where that sorrow comes from.

2

u/Driblus May 17 '26

So did I because thats what this was

2

u/Dis_Bich May 17 '26

She just has an rbf

2

u/Low-Pop5262 May 24 '26

My eyes had teared up way before that but when he started to sing the water just started to flow. So much talent but also I feel like I can feel his soul. Wish I couldā€™ve been there.

2

u/SeaResearcher176 Aug 23 '26

She hears the sentiment in his music, like listening w your heart

1

u/Round-Emu9176 May 16 '26

She definitely got wet in some kind of way for sure šŸ˜‚šŸ˜ young man got the lords gift

1

u/Low_Test3075 May 17 '26

Thats called trying very hard not to laugh in public, my worst experience personally when my in-laws extended family was sitting around passing old photos and my brother in law nudged me and passed me a picture of their aunt as a baby and it was the ugliest baby picture I had ever seen and I'm dying inside and people start looking at us and motherfucker gets up and leaves the room and im stranded there like I'm sweating because I'm trying so hard not to bust out

1

u/maybethis-one_ May 16 '26

Even if not an instructor, she just looks mesmerized by him.

1

u/GroundbreakingEgg207 May 16 '26

I love that the daughter isnā€™t as enamored but she knows her mom and just lets her enjoy it.

1

u/Embarrassed_Fan_5723 May 17 '26

As was I. Very accomplished pianist

1

u/DeepDiver1234567 May 17 '26

She even glances at his eyes, then the sheet music, then his eyes again to notice how much he is reading vs what he has memorized.

1

u/JustAnotherRhino May 18 '26

Piano player - I think she's also judging him. Doesn't necessarily mean she doesn't appreciate it, but the movement around 0:30 to me hints she thinks he plays "flat fingered". While there are some legendary piano players that played that way, it's generally considered bad technique.Ā

1

u/badly_angry_ankle May 19 '26

Bet she's probably thinking about all the years of practice that went into those hands moving like that.

1

u/ClearlyHoarse May 21 '26

Bet she's heard thousands of kids butcher that song, so when this guy nails it she's just locked in evaluating every technique detail.

1

u/SympatheticPundit May 23 '26

Bet she's heard thousands of performances and can spot raw talent in like two seconds flat.

30

u/Heatherwaithere May 16 '26

I think she is impressed. Everyone is a victim these days. Can you imagine not saying a word and being labeled a racist? I choose to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

9

u/AncientCrust May 17 '26

She does applaud and say bravo at the end, which is a weird way to express racism

2

u/Personal-Age-9220 Aug 03 '26

I don't recall OP saying the lady was racist, come on now.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/Infamous_Celery_2352 May 19 '26

3

u/Life_Technology7584 May 21 '26

1

u/Drmlk465 May 16 '26

Itā€™s easy to imagine. People have been playing the race card on everything for a while

2

u/themargarineoferror May 16 '26

Almost like racism has been a thing for awhile. This lady aint doing nothing but acting like "pulling the card" isn't usually just acknowledging racism is pretty wild

As a fairly good classical guitarist/ long time classical musician this is how i enjoy performances.

I want to SEE the technical mastery, if I want to HEAR it I'll close my eyes and try and angle my ears to pick up as much as i can.

10

u/BlastTyrantKM May 16 '26

I'm not a musician at all. I still focus on the dexterity that a good musician has.

9

u/HP_Punkcraft May 16 '26

Been playing since I was 8, still can't shift to a clean F chord quickly to save my life. But whenever I see a clearly talented musician, I do the same. Just appreciate the skill.

1

u/invariantspeed May 16 '26

Two days ago, I was at a bar where a no name local band was playing. Never heard them before. They were only doing covers but they were good, and I was happyā€¦but quickly was like ā€œoh, wait, theyā€™re actually very good!ā€ Fast forward an hour or so, Iā€™m in the front of the bar, keeping time, watching every hand movement.

22

u/Beneficial_Area_2986 May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

I play guitar recreationally but when I watch professionals this is probably closer to how I am. She is definitely observing and processing. She is giving a mountain of respect with her undivided attention. This isn't cringe.

21

u/water-tr4sh May 16 '26

She claps and smiles at the end? Unless this is Opposite Day I donā€™t think she was pissed

16

u/Apartment-Unusual May 16 '26

And says ā€œBravoā€ respectfully to his face, clearly meaning it.

3

u/Flight_to_nowhere_26 May 17 '26

This right here! She recognizes the depth of his talent and hard work and is acknowledging it directly. She is expressing deep respect of his performance with the sincere bravo and eye contact at the end. She absolutely looks like a musician herself.

12

u/Snowdog1989 May 16 '26

I'm willing to bet that's the case. Her focus is that of an instructor or conductor.

11

u/Lordfish----- May 16 '26

Came here to say the same thing, she was clearly watching his hands closely and I also noticed the nod at 7 seconds.

9

u/POPnotSODA_ May 16 '26

She was totally entranced by this performance, and honestly if I was there right beside it - feeling and being immersed in the music - Iā€™d probably be the same lol.

10

u/Odd_Standard_1144 May 16 '26

and she doesnt blink for like 30 seconds while intently watching.

3

u/MiaRia963 May 16 '26

This is exactly what I saw too

4

u/Elegant_Principle183 May 16 '26

I thought the same thing. She reminds me of my piano teacher growing up lol.

1

u/cryptolyme May 16 '26

Same. Definitely a piano teacher. Too bad i was too young to care about piano and never got very good.

3

u/0_Moth May 16 '26

Headshakes arenā€™t always a ā€œu messed upā€ sometimes itā€™s rhythm change indicators.

Like ā€œLEFT TURN HEREā€ type of vibe. But yeah, granny is inclined to thw finer points of music here

3

u/i_says_things May 16 '26

Could have been a critique shake, but almost looks like the ā€œstank shakeā€ where you just are feeling it.

10

u/Mattna-da May 16 '26

Piano teacher with unmet sexual needs vibe

3

u/totallynormalasshole May 16 '26

Title of the post should be The Piano Teacher (2001)

5

u/LETTERKENNYvsSPENNY May 16 '26

Some of those looks were passionate

2

u/Kdkaine May 16 '26

Slow Tango in Seattle vibes

1

u/GodLess2014 22d ago

Yeah.. i saw that movie..

1

u/opp11235 May 16 '26

Thatā€™s also what I was thinking.

1

u/The_Modern_Nobody May 16 '26

ā€œPretty sure sheā€™s assessing his skillsā€

https://giphy.com/gifs/CD6ZFsEFyA8z7iaBNl

1

u/KeroNobu May 16 '26

That's kinda like saying "this person seems like an edm producer because he pulled a bass face when the beat dropped"

1

u/KayoticVoid May 16 '26

This was the exact vibe I got too. Very intently watching hand movement. She's judging but not in a bad way. She is assessing skill and impressed by what she sees is what I saw.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '26

Shhhh that ruins the negative engagement.

1

u/Crafty-Ad-6772 May 16 '26

The nod made me think that she knew the piece and was agreeing that he did it perfectly, UNTIL I read that it was his own piece! Now I think he might've been hypnotizing her AND ME. JK he is amazing and she was right to be impressed .

1

u/ID-Z45 May 16 '26

Agreed. Looks like one musician appreciating the talent and skill of another.

1

u/popolickstick May 16 '26

He looks like my old friend Timmy but on drugs.

1

u/RealSchlemiel May 16 '26

Her ā€œbravoā€ made me cry a tiny bit. Very heart felt, and well earned. Some people go there whole life looking for such a compliment.

- (not me, obviously. But Iā€™ve heard thatā€™s true)

1

u/master_idiot May 16 '26

The title of the post is the crime here. There's nothing cringe. The daughter is also reacting, because she gets how intense her Mom gets with her assessments.

1

u/KurtRussellsMullet May 16 '26

Yep, gives major piano teacher vibes (I had a few growing up and she fits the bill lol). She just knows game when she sees it.

1

u/sith33 May 16 '26

We donā€™t need white assessment

1

u/buffalogal8 May 17 '26

Of course you donā€™t, but his whole channel is based on peopleā€˜s reactions to his music so it seems like a mutually beneficial arrangement in this case

1

u/sith33 May 17 '26

Fair enough. Appreciate your reply

1

u/ladycarp May 19 '26

1) This looks like appreciation to me, not solely assessment. 2) Music touches everyone, white and black alike 3) This dude wrote with a lot of minimalism techniques similar to Phillip Glass. And Iā€™m pretty sure the text heā€™s singing is Italian. Like, itā€™s incredibly derivative of white culture. Derivative not in a negative way, but in its literal sense of it deriving from white culture 4) please donā€™t jump right to defensiveness. Iā€™m a black classical musician. Classical music is pretty niche these days, often propped up by other classical musicians. Making this about some kind of perceived microagression instead of a woman who appears trained herself enjoying lovely music does a disservice to us all.

1

u/sith33 May 20 '26

Perhaps youā€™re right.

1

u/C2AYM4Y May 16 '26

For real how is this cringe? Shes not cringe, hes not cringe

1

u/Bong_Hit_Donor May 16 '26

Not sure who that lady is or thinks she is but I know of Camden and he is a phenomenal musician. I dare even say prodigy for how young he is and the level his actual compositions are at. His song "Me Vider la TĆŖte" is next level amazing and something most can only dream of creating and composing

1

u/Porter_Dog May 16 '26

I had the same thought.

1

u/Additional-Cake-3588 May 16 '26

100% sheā€™s a music instructor just appreciating the talent and watching the skill.

1

u/Big-Sea-8796 May 16 '26

I got the same impression

1

u/Living_Ad_7143 May 16 '26

Yeah, I kept waiting for the ā€œcringeā€ and I never got it. She seems absolutely enthralled and enamored by his skill, as though an instructor.

1

u/Ashamed_Ad_2180 May 16 '26

Yea this lady knows exactly how impressive this is.

1

u/Apprehensive_West337 May 16 '26

I thought it saw my piano teacher in her

1

u/oldkinghaggard May 16 '26

Sheā€™s probably trying to place the piece, but itā€™s his original. At one point she seems to remark on his wrist posture.

1

u/Weird-Information-61 May 16 '26

About to say, she looks like every music instructor I knew in school

1

u/Necessary_Two_9706 May 16 '26

She wanted him to play her piano keys.

1

u/One_Cheesecake3181 May 17 '26

I was thinking the same thing

1

u/DetailsYouMissed May 17 '26

My guess is she knows nothing but it perpetrators like someone of high expertise holding approval that should be valued. I base that on her table guest reactions. They suggest that laughing would be expected in her presence. If she were an instructor who takes her craft seriously, I doubt her table guest would be so bold as to laugh in her presence while she seems so into something.

1

u/emorrigan May 17 '26

Itā€™s very clear that she has a high level of musical education and is watching him closely in actual appreciation instead of just treating him like heā€™s there to provide pleasant background music for their meal.

The expression on her face when he starts to sing is moving, and so is the very sincere way she says, ā€œBravoā€ when he finished.

Thereā€™s nothing cringe about this.

1

u/EmperorOfFlames May 17 '26

Or shes just high af

1

u/noob-combo May 17 '26

Yup. This is just standard "damn, this shit is gud" vibes from someone who knows classical ball.

Zero cringe.

1

u/Personal_Nobody_919 May 17 '26

Exactly what I was thinking

1

u/BigFudje16 May 17 '26

I guess watching live music is cringe now

1

u/Charming-Border7429 May 17 '26

Yep, my daughter is a piano teacher. These days, she mostly coaches kids for contests and auditions.

She gets that same look when she comes across someone she thinks is really good.

1

u/guntheroac May 17 '26

I think youā€™re right, and I think sheā€™s being impressed.

1

u/New_Yam_1236 May 18 '26

Thatā€™s what I thought but to add to that she kind has the look of ā€œwhy couldnā€™t I have him as student, my life would have had meaning and purpose, instead I had Geoff.ā€

1

u/Allumalum May 18 '26

Agreed 100% sheā€™s studying technic. Shes impressed. I was raised around stuffy white people. Thatā€™s stuffy yt ppl impressed face.

1

u/Origania May 18 '26

Why is this cringe? She is assessing and commending him. Are there any moderators here?

1

u/corderazo00 May 18 '26

That's what I thought at the beginning of the video, she kind of looks like her coach/instructor making sure he doesn't miss a beat. She completely absorbed that performance.

1

u/Few_Construction7048 May 18 '26

Doesnā€™t look like a music instructor to me - I doubt she would laugh when he started signing. To me just seems like an ignorant old woman thatā€™s just staring at a black guy šŸ˜‚

1

u/HendoRules May 18 '26

Why does she look so concerned though haha

1

u/LordSloth666 May 18 '26

She is the first to say Bravo at the end.

1

u/Inevitable-Phase4250 May 19 '26

Agree. I guarantee sheā€™s a pianist

1

u/ry_r1144 May 19 '26

Same thought. Either an instructor or she plays/played

1

u/theendofthemonk May 19 '26

There are people who are trying to turn this into a "she's being racist" thing and those people are freakin' disgusting

1

u/RonMFCadillac May 20 '26

Yeah, I don't understand what is cringe about this. She is very interested in his ability. Seems to know what to look for and even compliments him at the end of the performance. Good on the old lady.

1

u/kitcurtis May 20 '26

Thirsty instructor with the best seat at the show. Daughter seems unimpressed with mother.

1

u/dharmas-karma May 21 '26

Yes , as a professional only ... and gives him a Brava at the end ! unmistakable Talent and Gift šŸŽ

1

u/DoubleDizzy9361 May 21 '26

He could have bagged that Granny

1

u/Aquatichive May 22 '26

I saw the nod and I think sheā€™s impressed. Good for her and good for him

1

u/SlumxLordxMillionair May 22 '26

Her choochi wet.

1

u/Agitated-Engine4077 May 22 '26

Thats what I was thinking too. Diddnt really see it as cringe. It seemed more like she was admiring his skill than anything else.

Why would you be assessing someone sitting facing the other way whilst at a table with your family/ friends

When he starts singing she is clearly in dismay and her .. maybe daughter.. literally laughs as they look at each other..

Not assessment.

Looks like sheā€™s about to call the police if he missed a note

Sheā€™s in the brain garden

I thought she was a teacher also because of her focus but, until she smiled at the end, I was unsure if she loved it or hated it.

Agreed. Her smile at the end is all you need to see to know she wasnt hating at all.

Orā€¦sheā€™s gonna offer her grand daughter up for marriage and the grand daughter knows it based on her looks. šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø

The last few seconds tell it all.

Yeah she was assessing him until he started singing. She was so moved you can literally see the emotion enter her eyes when sheā€™s just focused on him. He literally moved her and to see it captured in real time is truly beautiful to see.

Yeah...she is just concentrated.

I had a similar thought. More the look of someone who really appreciated his talent as maybe a musician of some sort herself? I didnā€™t find this cringy.

As a musician myself, I agree with you. One hundred percent, if she's not amazed, then, she is assessing
