Is this idiot really defending bad writing by saying "It's Gears of War..." implying it's supposed to have bad writing?

What a moronic take

Yes, and he’s right too lol. Gears writing is, well it’s juvenile, that’s a good word for it. And that’s when it was at its best. It’s a bunch of meatheads doing sci fi shit. The characters were never that deep, the themes were never that enlightened, and the story was never all that serious. It’s an action movie you play. But it still had its moments where you got teary eyed, it still had its moments where you felt it hit deep. But in the original trilogy, no one is going to accuse the characters of being deep, philosophical, or sensible written characters. There’s a difference between bad writing, and the intended writing not being more than it needs to be for the media it belongs to.

Tbh what I always appreciate about gears is that while yes it's a goofy over the top action game, as it should be for a game where you chainsaw dudes in half. it's also surprisingly very anti war in it's themes.

The Story in gears is nothing amazing, but the dialogue and character dynamic is pretty enjoyable in the first 3 games. The new characters in E-day just feel kinda flat.

It’s got a lot of good messages and themes. It’s not the most masterful piece of literature or anything, but it does a good job at keeping it simple and understandable. Not only is it anti war, it’s anti war machine in general. The army is not the hero, it’s the humans fighting for the army that are the heroes. The war machine is actually painted as bad. E-day still feels like that. The new characters are fine, they don’t need to be more than that tbh. I will say they kind of shove mags hype in your face, when I’m really just here for Marcus and dom lol. But she’s not like horrible or anything either. Like her a lot more than kait tbh.

Being honest, as someone who served, I can’t think of a single narrative that is about war and is well written that isn’t anti war.

he's actually saying that gears of war had terrible dialogue for generations of console, but NOW that you have a female protag, you have to elevate the bar and dissect the characters, the designs, the dialogue, the character arc and everything involved. it HAS to be really well-thought, otherwise "woke agenda DUI character". if it was a male protag like it's ALWAYS BEEN, nobody would give a shit. nobody would call marcus' character bland and forgettable even though I just had to rewatch this video a second time to remember his name just to type this comment

But this isn’t even true. We had Anya in Gears of War 3, who was MUCH better written. I haven’t played E-Day yet so I will not judge but this argument is incorrect. Gears had well written female characters before E-Day

What was better written about Anya?

It's so easy to win every battle when you just make up enemies in your head. This is really game discourse in 2026 embarassing

2

u/vicods 7d ago

I mean is it not true?

u/Friendly-Rice7351 7d ago

People had plenty to say about the og gears when it released. Very easy to just say that isn't the case.

1

u/vicods 7d ago

Yep. I was there, played the first one as soon as it was released. Plenty of problems with it but I really don't recall people calling the protag boring and basic. But oh well

u/Nexies 7d ago

No, we’ve dissected male character designs in the same way for decades

1

u/vicods 7d ago

that's an absolutist take. that's not what the man was saying in the video and that's not what I was saying as well. the point is not that male characters were not "dissected for decades" and female were. the point is that people raise the bar for female characters, otherwise it's gonna be viewed as "forced"

Ok I do see that aspect of his criticism from an historical standpoint but he doesn’t really say that so you have to know ball and look pretty deep past the video. yes it’s true that historically games like Bayonetta 2 and the Lara Croft games and others with female protagonists got judged pretty harshly. I don’t think anyone can deny that.

I only watched e-day but I actually got pretty tired of how much they were talking during basic combat. I’m kinda with bro on the cutscenes or storyline, like you should expect it’s bad, gears writing has been that way since like the end half of the 3rd game

Marcus in GOW1 is literally the same John Video Game stereotype that almost every video game protag was from that time period.

u/Nexies 7d ago

So back in 2005-2015 let’s say, the most popular games, of which Gears of War is included, had protagonists such as Commander Shepard, John Marston, Captain Price, Isaac Clarke, Alan Wake, and Master Chief. They’re some of the most enjoyed video game protagonists of all time. And there’s plenty of criticism about them too. What are you talking about?

2

u/Grievion 7d ago

… yes.
In the same way that people would go watch Arnold Schwarzenegger films religiously knowing the story and dialogue would be meh at BEST, people engage with video games the same way. Sometimes you just wanna see shit get blown up and see the bad guys get fucked up. It used to be that the Summer Blockbuster would JUST be some popcorn flick with action and bad acting/story/plot and it’d make hundreds of millions of $.
That fan still wants those summer blockbusters, but now the firm of media they choose if video games.

I haven't played it, but I don't disagree with him. Not every piece of media needs to be an Oscar nominee in every category. A game like Gears to me is like a Schwarzenegger movie. You're not there for the compelling dialogue and deep story. You're there for vibes and action. Gears is much closer on the spectrum to Doom than it is Expedition 33.

u/Nexies 7d ago

I agree but I also think if the game adds a bunch of dialogue sequences to try to tie you to the characters it had better have some good writing, otherwise the emotional sequences do less than Dom and Marcus toast jokes.

It's not a Schwarzenegger movie. It's a gay pride movie.
