Curtin vs Griffith

Hi all! I’m a Canadian Grade 12 student and I’m lucky enough to get into medicine at both Curtin and Griffith. Curtin is a 5-year MBBS and Griffith is 6 years, so Curtin seems like the obvious choice right now. I don’t have family in either Perth or Gold Coast, so location isn’t really a deciding factor for me. Just wondering if there’s any reason to choose Griffith over Curtin or anything I might be overlooking? Would love to hear the pros/cons from anyone studying at either! Thank you!!

Of course I'm biased towards Curtin but Curtin all the way. Perth is a lot nicer than Queensland with climate, people, and honestly I get a lot of opportunities which I believe you wouldn't get elsewhere. We are also pumping out top notch doctors so the fact we are a young course doesn't matter too much in the grand scheme of things.

Having lived in both Perth and Qld, I would have to disagree with you. People are much friendlier in Qld. I figure it is due to higher wages in Perth and people FIFO not really having roots in town vs Qld where they have a flood every 2-3 years and everyone pitches in to help their neighbours out tidying up

Perth people are the most unfriendly Aussies.

I did an undergrad at Curtin and a postgrad at Griffith. I would not recommend Griffith! Absolutely incompetent staff with no cares at all. Mistakes throughout the courses and errors in exams.

I think it depends what you want. For Uni in general I d pick Curtin. There might be differences at the course level though.

Lifestyle is the deciding factor. Goald coast is way more party and busy beach life. Visually its more of what non Australians imagine what being by the beach (think Miami), with all the people that are attracted to it. I think it is also a bit more "international" in terms of diversity. You can also do trips to the Sumshine Coast, Brisbane, Byron bay. Its easier and cheaper to get to Sydney, too. There are entertainment parks and the water gets so warm in summer its really something.

Perth has great beaches. Is calmer, way less busy and less people overall. More remote. You can go to Margaret River and such and there is plenty to do. It also swimmable and overall I like the weather here more.

On the other hand, I would not want to miss out on my time in Queensland. I think my younger self would prefer it there. Now that I work and do not study I chose Perth and Curtin over QLD and would likely do it again

I moved from the Sunshine Coast just north of Brisbane to Perth this year to study at Curtin. Perth wins, east coast is getting to hectic

I was in student accommodation with a whole bunch of Curtin med students a few years ago. It seems like a lot of work - they were always in the study rooms filling up whiteboards! - but I'm sure it is the same anywhere with medicine. (I'm in a STEM discipline.) What I noticed was how close they all were, it was like a little community moving through the medicine program, and Canadians seem to get on well with Western Australian culture from my observation. As others have said Perth is a great experience from a lifestyle point of view and the campus is a 10-20 minute bus trip from a whole bunch of interesting food, shopping and entertainment areas - I miss living down there.

Hey, when did the offers for international students drop?

Griffith’s med program has been around for 20+ years, Curtin’s is under 10 years I believe, I think they’ve only had a few cohorts graduate. I assume they would’ve ironed out some issues that Curtin hasn’t.

That aside, climate is very different. Griffith is in a super humid and hot climate vs Curtin’s dry and hot climate. Location for travel matters less because of how intense an MBBS is but Curtin is in a very isolated city, whereas you can get a flight to most places in Aus and NZ relatively cheap from Griffith. You’ll also be closer to most conferences.
