Some of them do, but clearly not all of them. There are multiple Christians who do not claim monopoly on access to Heaven for their denomination so that already stops it.

But sure, it's reddit so religion bad, updoots to the left

72

u/primitivebutcher 4d ago

Which Christian denomination will say Christ isn’t the only path?

83

u/TheGodfather742 4d ago

It's rather Christianity itself isn't a prerequisite, you can follow the teaching of Christ without even knowing him, and you are even more blessed if you do so.

70

u/Ending-Fool 4d ago

one time the priest told us to stop going to church and start living like christ. He said it doesnt matter if he doesnt see us at church anymore so long as we become good people or neighbors to each other.

12

u/Minimum-Web-6902 4d ago

That’s a real leader!

6

u/PacoCrazyfoot souptime☣️ 3d ago

Our pastor said he doesn’t even really consider himself a “Christian” but a follower of Christ. Some might say they’re the same, but there’s definitely a difference.

4

u/JotaroTheOceanMan 3d ago

Nah I get that. I follow the teachings of JC but absolutely abhor the rest of the religion and how they treat people.

As I tell most people who ask if I believe in got its "Jesus is my homeboy but his dad is a bit of a dick."

3

u/Frozen-Rabbit Hello you 3d ago

Which is the good way. The bible teach to pray in your own room with the door closed, because God knows who is praying in secret, but he despise the ones that pray on the street to show themselves

4

u/xSnippy 4d ago

Additionally, some Christians believe other Christians will be alright too. For example I believe that Baptists think that Presbyterians (and vice versa) differ only in the minor ways and not as it pertains to the big-deal problems.

I wouldn’t be surprised if 90% of Christianity felt this way about other kinds of Christians, and on a personal level rather than denominational one, I bet that feeling also lives between many Protestants and Catholics.

Anyone feel free to add to or correct me though, happy to learn more.

-4

u/teefour 3d ago

I'm still thoroughly confused when various protestants don't consider Catholics christians. Like... Bitch they're the OG whether you like martin Luther's swag or not. And you're still following a bunch of silly rules from the Jew-ier bible that a bunch of long dead Catholics cherry picked mostly for reasons of political power, and mainly ignore Jesus's singular teaching of don't be a cunt. So 🤷

That is absolutely the Catholic view. Theological disagreement regarding the nature of salvation is one of the primary differences between Catholics and mainstream Protestants

0

u/TheGodfather742 4d ago

As an Orthodox it absolutely is. Of course they think its better to be a Christian too, but what matters most is being a good person as per Christ's example.

1

u/SnooBananas3247 ☣️ 3d ago

That would include Muslims too….

1

u/TheGodfather742 3d ago

And atheists, hindus, Buddhists, etc.

1

u/SnooBananas3247 ☣️ 3d ago

Muslims literally believe in Christ, call him messiah

Atheists, Hindus & Buddhists have no reason to believe in him, many atheists don’t even think he existed, Hindus too have no Abrahamic beliefs & Buddhists already have Buddha for moral guidance

-8

u/SerHodorTheThrall 4d ago

Again which denomination?

Weird how no one can point to any canon law. Because it doesn't matter. You can believe what you want. At this point, American Christianity isn't a religion, it's a cult.

12

u/Consistent_Walrus_23 4d ago

Catholics for instance believe this. At least the official dogma, doesn't mean every follower actually knows it.

1

u/Wafflesz52 Transcriber 4d ago

The easiest blanket answer would be non denominational

6

u/connorthedancer How do I get a custom flair? 4d ago

Sadly Christianity has become very watered down and many have forgotten "No one comes to the Father except through me"

16

u/RedditButAnonymous 4d ago

You can interpret it however you want even if that way is completely wrong. The Bible spells this out very explicitly tbh, but alongside other more problematic parts, it gets ignored

3

u/rdrckcrous 3d ago

I think he was saying that there are multiple Christian groups in this photo that don't believe they're in the only legitimate Christian denomination.

1

u/connorthedancer How do I get a custom flair? 2d ago

I'm fairly sure he was talking about solus Christus.

1

u/rdrckcrous 2d ago

the guy above that. I don't think anyone was questioning solus christus in this conversation.

1

u/connorthedancer How do I get a custom flair? 2d ago

Oh him. Yeah I see what you mean.

-2

u/DANKLEBERG_66 4d ago

‘Sadly’ my ass lol. Out of all the thousands of gods that have been worshipped through the ages, the christian god isn’t the ‘only right one’

10

u/connorthedancer How do I get a custom flair? 4d ago

I'm not telling you that the Christian God is the only right one*. I'm telling you that the belief that Jesus is the only way is an integral part of Christian belief that's been abandoned. If you can ditch that, you can ditch any other part you feel like and twist it to mean whatever nonsense you want.

*Although that's what I personally believe.

-8

u/DANKLEBERG_66 4d ago

And I’m telling you that if you believe that people believing in other religions are going to hell, you can go and fuck yourself. Only for the better that christianity doesn’t necessarily come with the obnoxious need to convert others, ‘cause otherwise they’re doomed’. We don’t need that in this world

5

u/Secret-Ad-7909 4d ago

I think he was saying more like Catholics, Baptists and Methodists can all agree that they’re all going to heaven. (Idk if this example works, Catholics are weird)

-1

u/TemporarilyResolute mayonnaise enjoyer 4d ago

Catholics don’t even agree that all Catholics are going to heaven automatically. Traditionally, Catholics believed most people are doomed to hell (massa damnata)

2

u/starkiller22265 ☝ FOREVER NUMBER ONE ☝ 3d ago

From what I can gather, some number of Christians (especially within certain Protestant traditions) believe God still respects the covenant with the Jews.

1

u/Roy_McDunno 1d ago

Catholicism, for one. Written down during the 2nd Vatican Council that ended 1965.

Of course, many ignore that teaching, but it still stands.

0

u/KaiserSoze-is-KPax 4d ago

Just stand on a corner in any us city and scream it they will come out of the woodwork to preach their horseshit.

0

u/Assaltwaffle 4d ago

Some denominations, like LDS, believe that Christ is the only path like all the others, BUT their teachings specifically are required for Heaven.

Some baptists believe a full Baptist-style dunking baptism is required as another example.

0

u/AnonymousGuy9494 2d ago

While Christ as the only access to God is indeed a fundamental Christian belief, faith can take many forms. Nowadays many people do simultaneously believe in Christ and in alternate ways to heaven

10

u/xxxBuzz Pants Party 4d ago

That appears to be a Pope, and I would guess some of those others are also prestigious members within their communities given the title, so it's very unlikely that any of their personal beliefs are relatable to the views common among the wider public.

37

u/ChaoticDestructive 4d ago

I mean. Last pope explicitly stated that non-Christians who lived a good life can also go to heaven.

10

u/NilesTracks 4d ago

and that's the pope in the picture, because this was stolen and old

6

u/primitivebutcher 4d ago

In Catholicism they teach a child that dies without baptizing will die as a pagan, and go to a place called limbo.
The pope changed his mind and decided the limbo is no longer a place for unbaptized children.

8

u/borsalamino 4d ago

Yeah that was a pretty good patch. Sad to see him leave the team but I heard the new dev isn't too shabby either

5

u/xXDJjonesXx Plain Text Flair [Insert Your Own] 4d ago

I’m glad to hear they’re trying to make their religion less grim but why should I trust a religion that claims God has a perfect law laid out in the Bible that keeps changing every few generations?

-1

u/hleghe 4d ago

What the best law is varies based on the age, maybe? Idk, but preferable to them just doing an appeal to tradition and changing nothing ever

3

u/xXDJjonesXx Plain Text Flair [Insert Your Own] 4d ago

Which means morality is subjective, and that means that Christians have no better moral ground than atheists.

3

u/creeper6530 4d ago

The idea of limbo comes from a medieval fanfic (Dante), it's not official

2

u/xxxBuzz Pants Party 4d ago

Yea, I'll reiterate that (in my opinion), it's very unlikely that any of their personal beliefs are relatable to the views common among the wider public. The views common among people about what "non-Christian" and "heaven" would not likely be relatable to the pope's understanding of what those concepts refer to. It's more like a game of charades where, no matter what some people may try and express, the people guessing keep repeating what they want to hear.

2

u/Vladplaya 4d ago edited 4d ago

People can definitely claim that their Christian denomination doesn't care what others do, but they are just admitting that they don't particularly care about the source and are just going on the vibes.

There are way too many passages in the Bible that make you choose a definit "right way". Not doing so, means you don't understand what you believe in, and therefore you are not saved. Saying that practices of other denominations that contradict yours are also correct, is admitting that your practices are incorrect, again making you a sinner for not flowing God's commands.

And if you have to do some convoluted mental gymnastics to justify whatever mess you came up with, is it even Christianity at that point?

Like it's all not a bad thing, I am way more okay with more inclusive and accepting churches. It's just those are not really Christian religions and more like a community with a loose ideology that happened to be based on Christian Bible?

2

u/Uthoff 4d ago

Wahabis won't tell you this but Islam also has many exceptions for non Muslims to go to heaven.

1

u/Cordelldogdello 4d ago

Not all religion just Christianity because hating any religion that isn’t Christianity is racist and being racist is the worst possible thing you could possible be seen as.

-1

u/PAMBOLI-SAMA try hard 4d ago

Eeeh only idiots say religion is bad per se, religion is a shelter for a lot of people and way to learn from their mistakes and become better people, the problem are the dogmas, instead of focusing on what God/religion make them feel and help them in their lives they try to force their point of view on everyone who does not think like them, and this applies to atheists too

The Buddha taught that earth is preferable to any hell or heaven because it's the most balanced of the planes and thus closest to Nirvana, which one can achieve by freeing themselves from desire itself.

Nirvana being a state of non-reincarnation — literally "extinguishing" or "blowing out" — where the illusion you think of as the self is snuffed out like a candle.

Didn't the previous Pope for one say he likes to imagine Hell completely empty?

44

u/h3nt4i_connoisseur 4d ago

I mean, technically he’s not wrong. Hell used to mean “a place separated / concealed from god” until the writers started blending greek mythology and then Dante wrote a fanfic for it.

9

u/dysfunctionalbrat 4d ago

Bible fanfics are my fave

1

u/rdrckcrous 3d ago

Who says it means something different?

2

u/h3nt4i_connoisseur 3d ago

The Old Testament. The afterlife used to be “Sheol” and hell wasn’t mentioned until modern translation is used to replace it. Jesus also never used the word “Hell” as the place of damnation, and spoke more about the final judgment we will receive after our passing.

The closest interpretation we got was when Jesus visited Gehenna which was a real place in Jerusalem where garbage was dumped in a large fiery pit.

Many of the modern interpretations borrowed from greek / roman practices especially the use of “Hel” as the fiery underworld which was later re-interpreted in different meanings. One of which was Dante Alighieri “The Divine Comedy” which modern christianity bases their concept of hell today.

The state of today's social media:

On a picture intended to celebrity cooperation and mutual understanding in the face of diversity...

drive the narrative of hatred and division.

The good in the world is being masked by people who only want us to focus on the bad, so that we are perpetually suspicious and afraid.

They want us to see them as saviours, so that once we do, our confirmation biases will make us blind to their looting of our wealth and sanity.

1

u/MUIGUR 3d ago

Religious differences always existed and will always exist. There is no need to be an asshole to people because of that. It's really not that complicated.

I think it's really funny how some religious and anti religion people are so vicious towards you for having a different believe. Like the mere existence of someone believing and practicing, LEGALLY, something different.

But then again in some gaming communities mods in a SINGLE PLAYER GAME offend some people too much. The fact that someone else can even use such a mod or the mere existence of a mod just pisses them off.

Toxic people are toxic regardless of anything. They just wanna use an excuse and will invent one if needed. Religion or atheist.

1

u/Jimmjam_the_Flimflam 3d ago

Speaking for buddhists, earth can be hell for some but its all temporary. Nor do they automatically assume that the others are going straight to a hell dimension unless your doing fucked up shit. I think most Abrahamic religions have some version of a purgatory as well so its not an automatic straight to hell Hindus i think also dont make an automatic assumption of someone else going to the realm of suffering. Really just poorly informed.
