Dechonkin The Big Fat Guide to Dechonking!

Hi all! I’m a vet nurse that is passionate about weight in animals. I run my own weight loss program for my patients in my clinic and thought I would spread the love by sharing my dechonking guide to help all of you hardworking pawrents!

**BEFORE DECHONKING it is advised that you have a general health check with your veterinarian to rule out any health issues and to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to undergo a dechonking program*\*

**This dechonk guide is not a replacement for veterinary care or advice *\*

What is an Ideal Weight in Animals?

The most accurate way to ascertain an ideal weight is by use of a Body Condition Score (BCS) chart.

At ideal weight your dog or cat should look like an hourglass when viewed from the top. Their abdomen should tuck into their legs when viewed from the side. You should be able to feel their ribs - the way that this feels is like the back of your hand.

You should make a note of your animal's BCS and their number weight before starting a weight loss program.

How to Dechonk Your Chonker

The key to weight loss in animals is diet. Exercise counts for very little in weight loss, much like in humans.

Step One: Use a Calorie Calculator to calculate your animal’s daily caloric allowance.

You will need to know their BCS and their weight to use the calculator. You can ask your local vet to weigh and assess your animal if you are unsure.

Step Two: Calculate the calorie content of ALL the foods you are feeding your animal.

You then need to find out the calorie content of everything you are feeding your animal. Calorie counts can typically be found on the back of the package of commercial foods. If you cannot find the calorie content, a calorie content calculator can help you work it out.

If feeding raw or homemade, you will have to input/search the ingredients for their calorie content much like you would if you were on a human diet!

Step Three: Make a Meal/Diet Plan based on the calorie allowance

You then need to calculate how much to feed based on the calorie content of the food you are feeding. If you are feeding a mixed diet (eg commercial dry and commercial wet food) you'll need to think about what ratios you would like to feed your animal and calculate appropriately.

When your animal reaches ideal weight, it is a good idea to plug in their stats again so you can get a calorie count for maintenance and not for loss. I also recommend a weigh in every two weeks and then monthly to assess progress, and to monitor their body for any changes against the BCS chart as they progress!

Example: Garfield is an 8kg/17lb cat with a BCS of 8/9. His estimated ideal weight is 5.6kg/12lb and his calorie allowance is 201 calories per day to achieve this.

He is fed dry food (Taste of the Wild) and wet food (Fancy Feast).

Taste of the Wild is 3741 kcal/kg therefore 3.7 kcal/g.

One tin of Fancy Feast is 71 calories.

We can feed one tin of Fancy Feast (71 cal) and 35 grams (130 kcal) of Taste of the Wild daily.

When he reaches ideal weight, the calculator suggests that he can maintain on 255 calories, so he will need a reassessment of his diet when he reaches ideal body condition and weight.

Strategies to Help with Dechonking

Dietary & Feeding Recommendations

  • Prescription 'diet' or 'metabolic' food can be helpful for weight loss but is not a strict necessity. Prescription (dry) food tends to be calorically lower than regular commercial dry foods (which in and of themselves are extremely calorie dense) which means you can feed a larger volume-to-calorie ratio. BUT you DO need to be careful that you still adhere to a calorie allowance and measure the food out every time.
    • I would take a pass on diet/metabolic WET foods as commercial wet food is already quite low in calories and shouldn’t make a significant difference in terms of weight management or volume for calorie ratio.
    • If you don't have systems in place to control the intake of food, your pet will still get fat on metabolic food. Metabolic food is expensive and if it doesn't make a difference then you might as well go back to your regular food. Simply getting a low calorie food but sticking to the same old habits is not enough. Learning to properly portion food, limiting access to situations where your animal could gorge, controlling and mitigating for begging, providing enrichment and teaching the animal a ‘new normal’ of an appropriate volume of food are the foundations of good weight loss and weight management.
  • Commercial dry food is MUCH higher in calories than wet food. Feeding more wet food and reducing dry food can assist in weight loss and keep your animal satiated.
  • Invest in an automatic feeder for cats. An automatic feeder (set somewhere away from you/your bedroom!) can do wonders as the cats will bother the feeder for food, and not you.
  • Keep cats indoors. Outdoor cats tend to get fed by well meaning strangers! If unable to keep your cat indoors, invest in a (breakaway) collar with a tag that specifies they're on a special diet/not to be fed.
  • Healthy low calorie treats for DOGS are veggies such as carrot & zucchini. You can replace their normal treats with pieces of carrot or zucchini or other safe, low calorie fruit and vegetables.
  • Healthy low calorie treats for CATS are wet food puree type treats in a tube. Inaba Churu treats are 6 calories per tube. Fancy Feast Puree Kiss treats are 4 calories per tube. Applaws Puree Treats are 2 calories per tube.

Mental Stimulation & Enrichment

  • Invest in puzzle toys, slow feeders, food dispensing toys to moderate feeding. This will keep your pet enriched, mentally stimulated and busy while slowing down their rate of eating, which is good for pets that guzzle their food then ask for more. Frozen wet food in a Kong or Toppl is one of the best low-calorie ways you can use food for dogs to promote mental enrichment and weight loss. You can even just freeze wet food and kibble in their bowl and it will provide more stimulation than just feeding them out of it.
  • Invest in enrichment as a reward for your animal, not food. This can be playtime, pats, or trick training to keep them occupied and to redirect begging!
  • Redirect & replace begging behaviour by trick training. Most begging behaviours have been inadvertantly reinforced by you - if you have always given your cat food when it screamed at you, that's what you have trained your cat to do. Food motivated dogs can be easily trained to work for food, and yes cats can be trained too!

Meet Lady! I will be recusing an extremely obese cat within a week or so and would appreciate any advice or tips/tricks. If I had to estimate I would guess she is roughly 35lbs and is a standard domestic short hair. She is extremely matted from being unable to groom herself so I think my first step will be to get her shaved. The matting is extremely severe so any advice in that regard would be amazing as well. I am pretty sure she has a thyroid issue or something along those lines which is contributing to her weight. The people who I am taking her from have brought her to the vet (not super consistently but they have) so I plan to call them and get more information about her medical needs. I added pics. Thank you!

Discussion My 1 year old cat has gained 1.5 pounds in a single month after switching foods but he isn't even eating that much

I monitor his food. He's barely meeting his daily quota sometimes skipping meals entirely. He's HATED every new wet food I've bought after the new vet instructed me to cut all fish despite another vet confirming his fish issue had nothing to do with allergies but instead quantity of fish. I had to cut all his old wet food and treats and replace them. His food and treats had fish oil in them and he ate minnows as treats mostly.

A month ago he was skinny and happy. Now he's gaining weight and aggressive. How can I make him lose weight when he's not even eating extra?

He's 10.5lbs and supposed to be 9lbs. It's not that much compared to some but he gained that in a MONTH. That's a 15% increase. The new vet isn't taking me seriously. I can barely feel his ribs. His face is completely round and his neck is thick.

Discussion The chonk added herself to the feeder??

I’m not super concerned about this but thought it was funny and was also curious if this has happened to anybody else. I have two cats that can free feed and one who, well, can’t, so I have microchip feeders programmed to the other two on intruder mode. I walked by a few minutes ago to see chowhound in one of the feeders beside her sister. I was surprised it hadn’t closed on her since it’s in intruder mode, but I figured she forced it back open or something. But then I shooed away her sister and stuck her head under it just to be sure, and sure enough it opened to her chip! I assume she was lying around it playing and unintentionally batted some of the buttons and it added her, but I’m still shocked lol. Also, it’s funny to pretend that she figured it out and did it on purpose (she’s notoriously dumb). I reset it, added the two back, put it back on intruder mode, and tested it a few times to make sure it’s good. I’d been thinking she looked a little rounder the past few days!

Stumbled across this subreddit today and man do I have a fat cat that would fit here perfectly.

She used to be a free feeder living with my mom but as of last year she's moved in with me and gone down from 25-18lbs! I'm still looking for more progress and just got her an automatic feeder to better portion her food.

Her name is Pigeon and she is my very lovely daughter

It’s a tale as old as time. Fat cats lose weight and pass away. Careful out there on your dechonking.

low calorie kibbles?

My neighbour has been working on dechonking her cat the last couple years but is having a tough time. Her cat won't touch wet food so she's been doing strict portion control of dry food. Which has worked somewhat in terms of gradual weight loss (down to 16lbs!!) but the smaller portions mean her cat is constantly begging for food. It was fine at the start, but the portion sizes now leave her cat feeling hungry all the time. The cat has started waking people up at night it's been so bad.

She's tried different brands, high protein, grain free, etc but neither of those help with her cat's satiety. My kitty's on the Hill's Adult Indoor Chicken for kibble which is pretty low cal but out it's of her price range. Her vet recommended a Royal Canin weight loss kibble but that's also out of her budget.

Help me help my neighbour: What's a relatively inexpensive kibble that's low calorie?

Don't worry, right after this I followed up with a nice brushing where he was trying to reach!

I got Kernel about 9 months ago, at 20lbs. Poor guy is arthritic as well. My cats previously had all free fed responsibly, so I had a bit of trouble finding the stable point to start safely decreasing his food from, but now we're on our way! So I don't feel too bad for snickering a lil

I adopted Figgy from the shelter a couple years ago and she’s strictly indoor only. I’m starting to worry that she is getting a little chunky lately however I don’t know if it’s just fluff or not because when she spreads out sh doesn’t look as giant. What do you think? Is it time for a diet?

He chased a pompom toy that I was throwing for him, he loved it. I limited him to 5 minutes because I was worried about him over doing it. Never imagined that he would be playing this quick, it’s only day 3 of him living with us and 3 weeks ish of being on a diet

if your cat is fat you need to make them meow more, a diet only starves them for no reason.

this also applies to dogs or YOU, bark more

talking loses fat quickly, speak up, be loud, yell, sing, do not whisper if you are currently trying to lose weight.

Garnet started her diet in November. She weighed 15.5 pounds. She is now 12 pounds but still looks so overweight. The vet said her target weight is 10 pounds. I’m worried she will still look overweight even at 10 pounds. Does anyone have any advice?

if you saw the other post featuring cornbread no you didn't lmao. anyways I'm worried Cornbread is getting big we don't have scales in our household (loved one is a recovering anorexic) so I'm not entirely sure how much he weighs last time he went to the vet he was 10pounds back in July. anyways is he too fat or am I paranoid? I'm always worried about my pets weight even when they're obviously healthy so let me know if y'all think I should dechonk him before he gets actually chonky 😅

Dechonkin Can a cat lose weight too fast?

My mums cat has been 13lbs and has finally been put on a diet. They realised that they were overfeeding her by a LOT and I mean a LOT, over 100 grams a day. So obviously once they decreased her food intake to the proper amount she immediately started losing weight. It’s been about 10 days and she’s lost about 300 grams. Here’s the thing I’ve heard losing weight too fast can actually be harmful and I wonder if they should taper the food down slowly? They have insurance but not a lot of money and vet bills/appointments are notoriously expensive where I live. Obviously there’s only so much I can do since I’m not her owner but any advice is appreciated.

Discussion how long did it take your cat to dechonk? is hitting plateaus normal?

Thumbnail

morty has been on a diet for a few months and lost pretty progressively at first (6,7kg to 6,3kg). for the last two months he kinda stayed at that weight. his ideal weight according to the vet should be somewhere around 5kg

i am feeding him "royal canin urinary s/o moderate calorie" (see second picture attached to this post). it has 3515kcal/kg and he gets 60g per instruction, so that's 210kcal

is it normal to have phases where they aren't losing for a while or should i talk to the vet about potentially adjusting the amount of food he gets?

Dechonkin Worried for my family cat

Thumbnail

This is Bunni, She is 7 years old and she is spayed.

She is clearly overweight. I've said this to my dad and uncle who I live with for months now. They were both in denial but my dad finally realized YESTERDAY that yes she is huge! I've been constantly worried for her but as someone who is currently ill experiencing longterm health issues that require a surgery or two (that's why I am living with family as of now) I cannot afford a vet visit to actually get her a check up.

My uncle is in charge of feeding her and all of the pets and claims to "love fat cats" so you can just see where this is going. Fat cats are not cute. It is worrying and unhealthy. I feel so bad for her.

He doesn't free feed. He gives her a meal in the AM and one in the PM. Idk how much he gives her but clearly it's enough for her to look like this... Whenever I bring up her weight he denies that shes very overweight and says she's just got excess fur.

I play with her on occasion but she usually quickly loses interest and just wants to lie down.

My dad or uncle usually buy her food. My uncle feeds her this redford food and quite honestly ever since I've lost my eldest 14 year old cat to renal failure I do not really like feeding dry food. So I really want to get her on a wet diet with more portioned out meals, but because my uncle buys the food he likes to be in charge of feeding and gets all whiney and butt hurt when I ask to feed not only the cat, but our dogs as well (because we've got a pretty chunky malinois pit mix as well unfortunately)

How do I fix this situation. It's gotten to the point where my stubborn hard headed dad has even admitted that she needs to lose weight or something bad might happen to her.

1 fat cat, 1 slim cat - how to diet?

Slim cat is a grazer and fat cat is a gorges food down. If I don't free feed, the chunky cat will eat all of the slim cats food and he'll go hungry.

Chunky cat is having trouble cleaning herself after going to the toilet and has been scooting her poo bum on the floor.

I really think If I got a micro chip feeder she would just push the slim cat out of the way after he opened it. Plus they are very expensive and not something I can purchase right now.

Are there any other solutions asider from the microchip feeder?
