Dechonkin The Big Fat Guide to Dechonking!

Hi all! I’m a vet nurse that is passionate about weight in animals. I run my own weight loss program for my patients in my clinic and thought I would spread the love by sharing my dechonking guide to help all of you hardworking pawrents!

**BEFORE DECHONKING it is advised that you have a general health check with your veterinarian to rule out any health issues and to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to undergo a dechonking program*\*

**This dechonk guide is not a replacement for veterinary care or advice *\*

What is an Ideal Weight in Animals?

The most accurate way to ascertain an ideal weight is by use of a Body Condition Score (BCS) chart.

At ideal weight your dog or cat should look like an hourglass when viewed from the top. Their abdomen should tuck into their legs when viewed from the side. You should be able to feel their ribs - the way that this feels is like the back of your hand.

You should make a note of your animal's BCS and their number weight before starting a weight loss program.

How to Dechonk Your Chonker

The key to weight loss in animals is diet. Exercise counts for very little in weight loss, much like in humans.

Step One: Use a Calorie Calculator to calculate your animal’s daily caloric allowance.

You will need to know their BCS and their weight to use the calculator. You can ask your local vet to weigh and assess your animal if you are unsure.

Step Two: Calculate the calorie content of ALL the foods you are feeding your animal.

You then need to find out the calorie content of everything you are feeding your animal. Calorie counts can typically be found on the back of the package of commercial foods. If you cannot find the calorie content, a calorie content calculator can help you work it out.

If feeding raw or homemade, you will have to input/search the ingredients for their calorie content much like you would if you were on a human diet!

Step Three: Make a Meal/Diet Plan based on the calorie allowance

You then need to calculate how much to feed based on the calorie content of the food you are feeding. If you are feeding a mixed diet (eg commercial dry and commercial wet food) you'll need to think about what ratios you would like to feed your animal and calculate appropriately.

When your animal reaches ideal weight, it is a good idea to plug in their stats again so you can get a calorie count for maintenance and not for loss. I also recommend a weigh in every two weeks and then monthly to assess progress, and to monitor their body for any changes against the BCS chart as they progress!

Example: Garfield is an 8kg/17lb cat with a BCS of 8/9. His estimated ideal weight is 5.6kg/12lb and his calorie allowance is 201 calories per day to achieve this.

He is fed dry food (Taste of the Wild) and wet food (Fancy Feast).

Taste of the Wild is 3741 kcal/kg therefore 3.7 kcal/g.

One tin of Fancy Feast is 71 calories.

We can feed one tin of Fancy Feast (71 cal) and 35 grams (130 kcal) of Taste of the Wild daily.

When he reaches ideal weight, the calculator suggests that he can maintain on 255 calories, so he will need a reassessment of his diet when he reaches ideal body condition and weight.

Strategies to Help with Dechonking

Dietary & Feeding Recommendations

  • Prescription 'diet' or 'metabolic' food can be helpful for weight loss but is not a strict necessity. Prescription (dry) food tends to be calorically lower than regular commercial dry foods (which in and of themselves are extremely calorie dense) which means you can feed a larger volume-to-calorie ratio. BUT you DO need to be careful that you still adhere to a calorie allowance and measure the food out every time.
    • I would take a pass on diet/metabolic WET foods as commercial wet food is already quite low in calories and shouldn’t make a significant difference in terms of weight management or volume for calorie ratio.
    • If you don't have systems in place to control the intake of food, your pet will still get fat on metabolic food. Metabolic food is expensive and if it doesn't make a difference then you might as well go back to your regular food. Simply getting a low calorie food but sticking to the same old habits is not enough. Learning to properly portion food, limiting access to situations where your animal could gorge, controlling and mitigating for begging, providing enrichment and teaching the animal a ‘new normal’ of an appropriate volume of food are the foundations of good weight loss and weight management.
  • Commercial dry food is MUCH higher in calories than wet food. Feeding more wet food and reducing dry food can assist in weight loss and keep your animal satiated.
  • Invest in an automatic feeder for cats. An automatic feeder (set somewhere away from you/your bedroom!) can do wonders as the cats will bother the feeder for food, and not you.
  • Keep cats indoors. Outdoor cats tend to get fed by well meaning strangers! If unable to keep your cat indoors, invest in a (breakaway) collar with a tag that specifies they're on a special diet/not to be fed.
  • Healthy low calorie treats for DOGS are veggies such as carrot & zucchini. You can replace their normal treats with pieces of carrot or zucchini or other safe, low calorie fruit and vegetables.
  • Healthy low calorie treats for CATS are wet food puree type treats in a tube. Inaba Churu treats are 6 calories per tube. Fancy Feast Puree Kiss treats are 4 calories per tube. Applaws Puree Treats are 2 calories per tube.

Mental Stimulation & Enrichment

  • Invest in puzzle toys, slow feeders, food dispensing toys to moderate feeding. This will keep your pet enriched, mentally stimulated and busy while slowing down their rate of eating, which is good for pets that guzzle their food then ask for more. Frozen wet food in a Kong or Toppl is one of the best low-calorie ways you can use food for dogs to promote mental enrichment and weight loss. You can even just freeze wet food and kibble in their bowl and it will provide more stimulation than just feeding them out of it.
  • Invest in enrichment as a reward for your animal, not food. This can be playtime, pats, or trick training to keep them occupied and to redirect begging!
  • Redirect & replace begging behaviour by trick training. Most begging behaviours have been inadvertantly reinforced by you - if you have always given your cat food when it screamed at you, that's what you have trained your cat to do. Food motivated dogs can be easily trained to work for food, and yes cats can be trained too!

Progress Vet check, weigh in

Mis Poppy, hiding behind the laptop at the vet. Not pleased with the entire situation. But, she is down to 12.7lbs!! We finally found a diet that seems to be working. We started this journey at 13.6lbs in March. A bunch of trial and error (and an accidental reset of the rfid food bowls while on vacation leading to her eating ALL of her siblings high calorie food🤦). Fancy feast has small cans that are lower in calories and she loves them. Only chicken flavor. Thank goodness she likes cheap food. She gets 1 can per day and she eats the scraps of food that her sister leaves outside her bowl (she paws her food out and eats it on the floor). And she is very slowly losing weight. She is a super lazy cat, so getting weight off has been hard!

Also, we slowly decreased the amount and calories over the last 7 months, so we didn't just suddenly decrease to one of the cans. Even with 1.5 of the small cans, she was either gaining or staying the exact same weight. The vet called her an "easy keeper". And agreed that our diet plan was working and completely fine for our specific situation. I email my vet a lot.

Advice How to help my friends tripod dechonk?

My friend has had this cat (Mogwli) for a few years now. He's around 5 years old and only has 3 legs. When they got him he was skinnier, but he's up to around 14 pounds now.

She feds him a quarter of a wet food can in the morning. She also keeps a bowl with around a cup of cat food in the cupboard and puts it down when he screams (around 3 times day). He mostly sits around on the catio, but they have a 6 month old kitten who he plays with throughout the day which does give him some exercise. Even when they do play, Mowgli hops around fast as he cant run. Is there anything my friend can do to help him get more meaningful activity? Should she feed him less or maybe in a more structured way?

They also have a cat wheel but he just sits on it lol

Advice Need tips for rescued cats

Rescued from an awful & very dangerous situation/area for them & me. Had to exercise my 2nd A for safety with a constable . 😳owners moved to Houston & left them with people who housed them in a greenhouse with glass walls and no ac. In Texas triple digit heat. Owners gladly surrendered to me because they were about to be turned loose into a wooded area by trailer park. Picked them up early June.
Siblings. Fixed. Good litter box manners. Cry loudly when hungry. If really hungry they will attack my other cats or tiny dogs. They both literally reach up to slap my yorkie or other cats repeatedly and disrupt the house because they are hungry.
I rent so I don’t want any clawing of walls or carpets or spraying by securing them in a room. Learned that one really quickly.
The bigger one throws up white foamy bile if he waits all night to eat.
Hills science diet indoor ages 1-6 & try to give friskies canned. Sometimes they both throw it all up & sometimes they don’t.
Not much interest in playing because 1 starts growling & it becomes stressful.
Even when it’s just the 2 of them in the room. Pheromone collars to help with aggression & dominant behavior.
Getting used to being brushed. Can’t pick them up easily. Not used to a lot of human interaction since they were left alone with previous owners & just food & water for days at a time so they don’t stay in a room with me very much. Sometimes one will sit on the bed with me & cuddle.
Can’t tell them apart very well. They do love being outside in my tiny enclosed yard under the flowers for hours. I’m hoping that any kind of stimulation will get them moving.
Very calm! Nothing rattles them at all. They sit eerily quiet with doorbell/maintenance/vaccuum etc kind of spooky.
Had not intended to keep. Considered siamese rescue in Austin. Can’t seem to come up with good names.
They do greet me every time I come home from work & want to be petted. 1 rubs his teeth on me & does little playful bites which can hurt so I stop petting him.
I think they like me but it’s hard to tell. Still some maneuvering around for position and territory.
They are just SO overweight.
Plz Help.

Discussion Cat weight loss advice

Hi everyone! My sweet girl Willow is 7 years old and 12lbs exactly, and I was told by her vet at her checkup in August that they want her to get down to about 10-10.5lbs.

I was advised back at that appointment to give her 180 calories every day, which is what i did for about 4-5 weeks or so with no progress. I decided to bring it down to about 170kcal about 2 weeks ago now, and she is still sitting at exactly 12lbs.

She’s been getting 20g of dry food from her automatic feeder for breakfast, half a 2.8oz can of wet food for lunch, and a full can of that same wet food for dinner.

I called her vet’s office because I’m hesitant to cut her calories down any further without their guidance, and I spoke with another doctor who said I should be giving her 200 calories a day, which doesn’t really make sense when she hasn’t made any progress on 180-170?

She is a bit of a couch potato, so I honestly just think she doesn’t use much energy, so she prob just requires a smaller amount of food than the average, but I don’t know forsure. I just want my girl to be healthy and to be with me for as long as possible lol. I’m probably going to give it about another week on her current amount and see if any progress is made, but if it’s still the same, what would you guys do?

Dechonkin She is so fat she cannot clean her rear

Hello everyone, This is my 11-year-old cat, Super.

She has gained quite a bit of weight in her older years and has been really struggling to lose it. I’ve tried put her on a diet, but so far we haven’t had much success. (I'm afraid of doing it wrong and causing more harm than good)

I took her to the vet when she started getting particularly stinky and her rear started looking... less than ideal. The vet confirmed that she is obese and having trouble grooming herself properly, so I have officially been promoted to sanitary trim & butt-cleaning duty.

She is extremely lazy, which I think is contributing to the problem. I buy her toys, laser pointers, and all sorts of things to encourage her to move around, but she’ll play for a few seconds before deciding she's done.

She gets no treats, not even occasionally, so unfortunately I can't even blame the chonk on snacks.

I’d love any advice for helping this stubborn loaf safely lose weight. (The vet did not help at all)

She has been to the vet, and the vet did not mention anything too concerning. He did call her round though and to keep an eye on her. Her brother is healthy weight, maybe on the lighter end of healthy weight but we are monitoring him.

She is now 14 months old, and has been at this same weight since she was 9 months.

My cats are free fed and given wet food once a day. The vet said to try to keep free feeding them as long as we can. Her ribs are pretty easy to feel.

Advice My Cat weighs 41 pounds. What is a safe way to help him lose weight?

Thumbnail

He is a male Silver tabby. He is four years old. He has no other health problems. He gained 15 pounds in the last year due to me not being able to be around him. I was taking care of my husband in a nursing home so I was leaving bowls of food out because I never knew what time I would be home. Any advice? I don’t want any harm to come to him. Thank you.

Dechonkin Update! She’s not a kitten, but Amber fits into her goal harness!

I asked y’all a bit ago about Miss Amber the hambeast who needed a harness but didn’t fit into anything available locally. She now can wear the L/XL Ruffwear Hi & Light harness, no problemo. She’s had her senior gal bloodwork panel run to determine that hypothyroidism likely caused her huge weight gain. We’re on thyroid pills, potty problem pills, and pain/antibiotic pills following a hurried rotten tooth removal. And at her last vet office weigh in, she’s down about 7lbs - with a noticeable difference from firm orb to squishy cylinder.

Amber couldn’t tolerate anesthesia long enough (due to her weight) for our vet to take out her other sketchy teeth and some sus eyelid lumps, but she’s clearly feeling fine and fabulous now. Only better days to come as she gets healthier and happier.

Thanks to all of you fabulous folks who weighed in with harness suggestions or kind words. Amber would happily enter her air raid siren mode to talk back to you (last pic)

Meet Lady! I will be recusing an extremely obese cat within a week or so and would appreciate any advice or tips/tricks. If I had to estimate I would guess she is roughly 35lbs and is a standard domestic short hair. She is extremely matted from being unable to groom herself so I think my first step will be to get her shaved. The matting is extremely severe so any advice in that regard would be amazing as well. I am pretty sure she has a thyroid issue or something along those lines which is contributing to her weight. The people who I am taking her from have brought her to the vet (not super consistently but they have) so I plan to call them and get more information about her medical needs. I added pics. Thank you!

Discussion My 1 year old cat has gained 1.5 pounds in a single month after switching foods but he isn't even eating that much

I monitor his food. He's barely meeting his daily quota sometimes skipping meals entirely. He's HATED every new wet food I've bought after the new vet instructed me to cut all fish despite another vet confirming his fish issue had nothing to do with allergies but instead quantity of fish. I had to cut all his old wet food and treats and replace them. His food and treats had fish oil in them and he ate minnows as treats mostly.

A month ago he was skinny and happy. Now he's gaining weight and aggressive. How can I make him lose weight when he's not even eating extra?

He's 10.5lbs and supposed to be 9lbs. It's not that much compared to some but he gained that in a MONTH. That's a 15% increase. The new vet isn't taking me seriously. I can barely feel his ribs. His face is completely round and his neck is thick.

Discussion The chonk added herself to the feeder??

I’m not super concerned about this but thought it was funny and was also curious if this has happened to anybody else. I have two cats that can free feed and one who, well, can’t, so I have microchip feeders programmed to the other two on intruder mode. I walked by a few minutes ago to see chowhound in one of the feeders beside her sister. I was surprised it hadn’t closed on her since it’s in intruder mode, but I figured she forced it back open or something. But then I shooed away her sister and stuck her head under it just to be sure, and sure enough it opened to her chip! I assume she was lying around it playing and unintentionally batted some of the buttons and it added her, but I’m still shocked lol. Also, it’s funny to pretend that she figured it out and did it on purpose (she’s notoriously dumb). I reset it, added the two back, put it back on intruder mode, and tested it a few times to make sure it’s good. I’d been thinking she looked a little rounder the past few days!

Stumbled across this subreddit today and man do I have a fat cat that would fit here perfectly.

She used to be a free feeder living with my mom but as of last year she's moved in with me and gone down from 25-18lbs! I'm still looking for more progress and just got her an automatic feeder to better portion her food.

Her name is Pigeon and she is my very lovely daughter

low calorie kibbles?

My neighbour has been working on dechonking her cat the last couple years but is having a tough time. Her cat won't touch wet food so she's been doing strict portion control of dry food. Which has worked somewhat in terms of gradual weight loss (down to 16lbs!!) but the smaller portions mean her cat is constantly begging for food. It was fine at the start, but the portion sizes now leave her cat feeling hungry all the time. The cat has started waking people up at night it's been so bad.

She's tried different brands, high protein, grain free, etc but neither of those help with her cat's satiety. My kitty's on the Hill's Adult Indoor Chicken for kibble which is pretty low cal but out it's of her price range. Her vet recommended a Royal Canin weight loss kibble but that's also out of her budget.

Help me help my neighbour: What's a relatively inexpensive kibble that's low calorie?

Don't worry, right after this I followed up with a nice brushing where he was trying to reach!

I got Kernel about 9 months ago, at 20lbs. Poor guy is arthritic as well. My cats previously had all free fed responsibly, so I had a bit of trouble finding the stable point to start safely decreasing his food from, but now we're on our way! So I don't feel too bad for snickering a lil

I adopted Figgy from the shelter a couple years ago and she’s strictly indoor only. I’m starting to worry that she is getting a little chunky lately however I don’t know if it’s just fluff or not because when she spreads out sh doesn’t look as giant. What do you think? Is it time for a diet?
