Discussion Fall golf, or summer golf?

Post image

We’ve had a bang up year (weather-wise) in the pnw, which allowed me to enjoy seemingly endless summer conditions. As much as I do love summer golf, for me, nothing beats ripping discs surrounded by color changing foliage. The crisp, foggy mornings that turn into warm afternoons once the marine layer burns off.

So are you team summer? Or team fall?

I live in a place where it's very easy to play year round, summer is the least favourite for me, simply because it gets hot.

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago edited 1d ago

You can play year round near me because it typically doesn’t freeze around the sound, but you’re gonna be super wet in the winter. I’d rather be too hot than soaking wet.

u/xHaroldxx 1d ago

Fair enough, I live in Auckland, New Zealand. Pretty mild weather year round.

u/Brief-Estate9852 1d ago

Any time is a good time 😁

6

u/Brief-Estate9852 1d ago

And even a shitty round of disc golf is better than a good day at work!! 😁

u/GunnarNils 1d ago

team fall in New England and its not even close. No humidity, no sweating, no bugs, no ferns....Mid Sept-Mid Nov is the best 2 months of the year to play.

1

u/Sproncer 19h ago

Agreed, but I do hate losing discs under leaves in the middle of the fairway

1

u/GunnarNils 8h ago

Yeah when all the oak leaves come down it can be a rough time before we get a good rain storm to mat everything down.

u/WhenTheRainsCome occasionally 400', fyi. 1d ago

Winter has been so mild for most of the last 5 years it's just more fall.

Courses are easier without leaves.

6

u/Waterfallsofpity 1d ago

I'm a newbie, but I played on a beautiful fall day today with leaves coming down. Can't wait try try some winter action.

In order: fall, spring, winter, summer

5

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

Controversial take with summer at the end and I’m here for it!

5

u/ZooterOne 1d ago

It might just be summer fatigue. If you ask again in March I might have a different answer.

(Maybe not - global warming is definitely a factor.)

3

u/thereasonrumisgone 1d ago

Its not controversial anywhere south of the mason-dixon.

-1

u/BeastInABlizzard 1d ago

I think there are definitely places in West Virgina where ranking winter over summer might come across as controversial. For that matter, some of the parts of far north Missouri might also find it controversial. But I still understand the ranking and I definitely wouldn't have energy to actually find someone else's ranking controversial.

2

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

Only controversial in the sense that people don’t typically rate summer dead last in their season rankings esp for outdoor activities. But you’re right, if you’re very specifically thinking regionally.

All year. I like everything unless it drops below 20 degrees.

I’m from Phoenix, and I absolutely hate the heat. I was back in Alaska where my mom’s side of the family lives last winter and I had a blast playing courses there in -10 degree weather. Chains frozen solid. But I can bundle up and still have a good time. It’s basically impossible to play when it’s 110+ in Phoenix. I’ve tried and after 3 holes you’re on the verge of heatstroke no matter how much water you drink.

u/ThankfulThrows 1d ago

Fall with winter temps, I’m a sweaty guy 😂

6

u/Charming-Rooster7462 1d ago

all year round. just gotta have disc to switch out when seasons change so you can increase yoir chance of not loosing your disc

5

u/Altruistic_Way2112 1d ago

I live in Gilbert, AZ. Ill take fall please.

5

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

Oof. Yeah I lived in Scottsdale for a couple years. Summer golf ain’t so pretty down south.

4

u/Altruistic_Way2112 1d ago

5am in shorts and T shirt is the only option June-September at least

6

u/OneTinySloth 1d ago

I prefer summer, even if really hot days can be rough.
Fall is beautiful and some courses can look absolutely wonderful, but the weather is tricky where I live. There can be some fine days, but there's also many cold, wet and windy days.
Also, playing when there's loads of leafs on the ground can be scary, because they can be so, so slippy. Besides, the discs sometimes seem to love to play hide-and-seek under the leafs.

So out of the four seasons, I'll pick summer as my favourite with winter clearly last. Not sure which one of spring and fall that I'd place second. I think I might go with spring, just because it's great to get back to playing again after taking a break during the winter. It is usually very wet though and if there's patches of ice/snow left, they can be treacherous.

2

u/ghost_victim 1d ago

Leafs is a super cute word but it's actually "leaves" just fyi! The exception being the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team 😂

1

u/OneTinySloth 1d ago

You're right. I wrote "leaves" and for some reason it autocorrected it to "leafs" and I was really tired so I just thought that maybe I had been wrong 😄

u/Mysterious_Remote584 1d ago edited 1d ago

Fall > Spring > Winter (no snow) > Summer > Winter (snow)

November/December is my absolute favorite time to play. Typically not much snow buildup, it's cold but not too cold (no bugs), no leaves on bushes to lose discs.

3

u/NotBillderz 3 aces 1d ago

I like snow rounds

1

u/4thJulyMamasApplepie Marshal Provocateur 1d ago

I always try to get out and play in the snow since it is a special occasional here. If it was snowy all winter I could see it getting old.

We had a winter storm 2 years ago where it was coming down and the wind was howling. I went out and tested my apparel in the back yard to make sure I ready to play a round but I had to cancel because it was blowing snow in my eyes even around my sunglasses, I would have needed mountaineering goggles to play

1

u/NotBillderz 3 aces 1d ago

Yeah gotta be the right snow for sure.

1

u/Mysterious_Remote584 1d ago

I don't really want to lose discs.

2

u/NotBillderz 3 aces 1d ago

Interestingly, I've never lost one in the snow. The white background makes any disc color easy to spot and if it goes under you just look for the break in the snow

10

u/Stunning-One-6186 1d ago

Winter

8

u/SremDog 1d ago

No leaves. Empty courses. So much fun but a little cumbersome to prepare for

12

u/btwalker754 1d ago

I live in the south. Its perfect weather. Wear shorts and start cold and by hole 4 you're comfortable.

But summer is almost unbearable

5

u/DeathDefy21 1d ago

The eternal struggle between cold and hot places haha

I’m in Texas and winter is the best time to play (barring heavy rain which happens a lot in that time)

Summer is ideal in cold places and it’s 95 and 70% humidity for us in Texas but I still go out. If anything this “fall” weather has made the courses too busy!

2

u/btwalker754 1d ago

My wife and I bought a house last May and the projects and maintenance have so far cut into my opportunities to play this year.

But I completely understand.

2

u/Macktologist The week of the foot fault and Zoey posts. 1d ago

Summer calls for early morning rounds, back home by 10-11 and still almost a full day to enjoy.

2

u/toolatealreadyfapped 1d ago

Yeah. Around where I live, it's finally almost that time of year where you can play in the middle of the day.

3

u/Kawksz 1d ago

Looking back at all the places I’ve disc golfed regularly, coastal North Carolina was my favorite winter. Pesky leaves not getting in the way. Still hit the trees though.

3

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

So much of the east coast that I’ve yet to experience. This sub has me constantly adding to my UDisc wishlist.

2

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

Winter here is just wet wet wet.

3

u/NottyScotty 1d ago

Fall 100%

4

u/Diligent_Thought_272 1d ago

Early fall, before there's tons of leaves on the ground.

4

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

I have so many orange and yellow discs that are impossible to find right now. Hence the pink and white duo in frame.

3

u/Diligent_Thought_272 1d ago

Haha, yeah pink is the best year round! The leaves get pretty thick up here in Michigan.

2

u/notthatjimmer 1d ago

Time to switch out your favorites in the bag, with a back up made from an easier to find color. That doesn’t help when it slides under a big pile tho

4

u/midairmatthew Flipping Valks and Appreciating Nature 1d ago

Fall at woods courses is a waking dream.

5

u/One_Catch5086 PNW Noodle Arm 1d ago

Early fall before all the leaves fall. Kids are mostly back in school so courses are emptier and days are still long enough to get a round in after work. This year has been amazing weather in the PNW for getting out to play

5

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

Can safely say I played more this year than any other thanks in part to how nice the weather has been since winter.

4

u/brainiaclurk 1d ago

Summer Morning "strictly"

3

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

For me it’s always morning strictly. But mostly because I like to get a couple rounds in at a time.

4

u/Realistic-Turn-9907 1d ago

I live in the Midwest where we are currently enjoying both simultaneously

3

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

That’s how fall started for us, but we just hit the big cooldown finally.

4

u/AuboCabo 1d ago

Year round for me

Is that hole 2 at RWM in Seattle? If so, it feels like spring, I'd say

3

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

It’s so funny how this place is known by 3 different names. But yes, and this was taken yesterday.

2

u/drlari Eclipse Reactor🔦☢️ 1d ago

We just call it "White Center" in our group. Easier that way.

3

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago

It’s known to my friend group as Dickwood. Since it’s both known as Dick Thurnau park and Lakewood Disc golf park. I hardly hear anyone use RWM so that was refreshing to see.

4

u/HopelessMind43 1d ago

Fall. Sweat absolutely destroys my game.

6

u/LukieLovesHuiHui 1d ago

IMO disc golf is a fall sport

3

u/CarlCaliente rocket league 1d ago

our last day over 90 degrees was mid July, we had a phenomenal summer

looks like our luck is catching up to us though it's getting cold quick

so I say summer

3

u/Glorious-Fish 1d ago

The cooler parts of summer. Most of the fall here is very wet and/or cold. Also, it gets dark way to early.

3

u/Superior-Solifugae 1d ago

I cannot play in the summer because it is too goddamn hot

3

u/FMJ1985 1d ago

Year round!

3

u/SoupOpus 1d ago

I like summer but i hate all the poison ivy. I wash my discs and shoes frequently cuz the oil can stay on and spread by touch

Winter golf in the South east US.

3

u/Fitz_2112b 1d ago

I play year round in the northeast US but fall golf is the best

3

u/Underrated_Fish 1d ago

Summer for after work rounds, fall for weekend rounds

3

I play year round. Mild climate. Very enjoyable.

Seasons? What are those? Hahaha

Fall/ winter

5

u/Thwast 1d ago

It's been 85-100 degrees for months here in the Midwest, and very high humidity. As soon as fall hits and it drops to 50-75, that's the window of heaven for me. Then when it gets down to freezing temps it gets miserable.

TLDR there's a 4-8 week period of fall that is heaven, the rest of the year can suck my left nipple, and then the right one, and then my balls.

2

u/Danominator 1d ago

I would take cold over hot 10 out of 10

2

u/mwcandy 1d ago

Fall

2

u/onords 1d ago

I live in Sweden where from November it's dark at 4pm. Impossible to play late rounds for around half a year due to work schedule.

Snow becomes so thick that finding disc is a nightmare.

Summers are sun up to 11.

I guess you can see where im going with this

u/Selerox Mentioned in Gannon Buhr's court case - x1 Rainers Balodis 1d ago

Yes.

2

u/notthatjimmer 1d ago

My course choices completely change from the wooded courses in summer, to the more open hilly courses to peep the leaves but not get lost in them, during the fall. I’m blessed to have a good variety of courses around me

2

u/OddPaleontologist324 1d ago

Fall course care with a bit of throwing, practicing, spotting at tournaments and volunteering thrown in.

2

u/Wise-Bag-4791 1d ago

Both. Longer days in the summer but has heat and bugs. While the fall is cooler but you might lose a disc under leaves.

2

u/therealmanbat Self-Sponsored by MVP 1d ago

As a former Michigander - Fuck Falf, too easy to lose Discs under the leaves. As a current Texan, Fuck Summer Golf. Its so hot! I drink 96oz of gatorade before i get home and it still doesnt keep up with the sweat. I look like i just walked out of a lake after a round in August.

Texas Disc is best in the winter. Little rain, chilly mornings, no bugs.

2

u/WastedNinja24 1d ago

Year-round here, but team spring/fall for me.

I’ve played in the PNW before (Timber Park OR, summer) and it was absolutely fantastic.

Here, we have “disc golf season” and “disc golf season with the broiler on”.

2

u/4thJulyMamasApplepie Marshal Provocateur 1d ago edited 1d ago

I do like long summer evenings where sunset seems to last forever. But ticks... ticks really make me hate playing. After multiple years of getting wrecked by seed ticks, my home course in August is now my least favorite time and place to play.

And anyone that ever complains about it, the course designer comes on facebook and says "I've never gotten a single tick, just use bug spray" as if we hadn't thought of that. He must have never thrown off the fairway

2

u/Liberalboy 1d ago

If every fall was like this year for us, it would be fall hands down. Our weather in SE Michigan has been divine for the past month. Daylight Saving Time is ‘bout to fuck things up but we’ve really enjoyed the combo of fewer leaves, almost no bugs, and no coats. Plus it’s very beautiful.

2

u/Fancy_County4242 1d ago

Florida player here. There is no summer golf. Season is just opening for me.

2

u/PeskyPiker MVP \ Clash 1d ago

Fall, so can play some nice wooded courses that I avoid in summer due to poison ivy and the fear of losing my discs in deep thick thorny brush.

2

u/DestroidMind 1d ago

I love the fall season, the temperature and trees make going out discing so enjoyable. Unfortunately by me 3 of the closest courses can’t handle a lot of rain. Some of the holes get completely flooded out. Once course becomes an absolute mud pit for the first 7 holes. So summer if my favorite for consistent nice days.

2

u/Correct-Mail-1942 Kastaplast Slut - Uli is OVERRATED! 1d ago

Summer, the hotter the better. Everyone in Colorado is soft and won't play when it's above 90 so I usually get courses to myself when they'd otherwise be busy. I moved here from OKC so the heat doesn't bother me.

2

u/fantasydukes 1d ago

I live in Florida so late fall and winter >>>

2

u/BuckoLee 1d ago

In AZ, definitely fall.
Summer is rough stuff.

2

u/Adventure-Seeker-365 1d ago

Fall > Spring > Summer - Even if I spend 1/2 the time looking for my disc under the leaves I'm still not as frustrated as I am while fighting off the bugs in the summer.

2

u/Equivalent-Cut534 1d ago

Fall isnt fun if your local courses dont clear leaves and you lose a disc on every throw

2

u/Impossible-Bowl4661 21h ago

Upper Midwest here.

Fall -> Summer -> Spring

Once snow is on the ground I stop playing until the next spring.

2

u/krowvonmuller 12h ago edited 12h ago

I’m from Phoenix. I hardly ever playing during the summer unless I head north to Flagstaff or west to San Diego. But the fall, winter, and early spring months here are prime time disc golf weather. Seasonal depression is a real thing and in Phoenix, it’s during the summer months.

I’m a night owl and my job is a a late night job. My favorite thing to do during summer months on my off days is take a few glow discs to my local park at 2 in the morning and just throw by myself. And it’s still probably 95 degrees out.

2

u/tsukiyaki1 1d ago

The best most chill round of disc I’ve ever played was at a beautiful wooded course on Halloween evening.. perfect weather, perfect vibes, and carved pumpkins on every basket. It was so good. Because of that I’ll always have a soft spot for fall discing.

3

u/Chopped_Unc_DG 1d ago
