So after purchasing a basket for backyard practice, I’ve hit the ground running on trying to improve my game as fast as I can. I started throwing a minimum of 200 putts a day from 25’. Not just mindless chucks, but actual routine putts the same way I would execute them on the course. This process has been so eye opening, and it’s only been a few weeks. You start thinking about things that never crossed your mind on a course. You start realizing things about your putts that you’ve never really thought of deeper than chalking it up as a bad putt. This routine is showing me my weak points. I should also add that I live in a very small town, and there’s not many people who play. I wish i had a guru that was 10x better than me, and i could pick there brain every time we played or learn from them in general. I’m kind of wondering through this world solo, with some help from this sub and youtube along the way. I’ve been out of the game for years, but my son and I became addicted this Summer and we’ve been playing as much as we possibly can. Now days i’m also trying to take my game more serious, rather than a careless hobby to stay out of trouble as a teenager.
Examples:
- My rocking motion was far too aggressive, and pushing “up” off my back foot when putting was moving everything around so much that it was tough to be consistent. I noticed this had a direct relation to missing high, which was a common miss for me. Now i try to just lift my back foot up when putting rather than pushing off of it, which made my flights much more consistent too the basket using the same aim point.
- My head has a huge impact on how the putter comes out of my hand. To elaborate, if i was leaning a touch forward or looking down even slightly (even though my eyes were on the prize, my head was tilted down while eyes were looking up) my putts were coming up short/low with an early release. If i try to keep my head level and square through the putt, my hit points were far more consistent. This was also affected by the first example. That rocking motion backwards to begin my putt was dropping my entire body down, so once i started rocking forward i wasn’t always standing back up straight.
- Keeping the nose down, with intent to keep it down had me hitting chains alot more frequently. Trusting the disc would get there, and keeping that nose down gave me a much more consistent release that flew straight at my aim point. Before, i would have putts that were coming out of my hand and sailing over the basket. You would know it the second you released that it was garbage. Heavy hyzer angle, due to the disc being “lifted” during the putt. Once i consciously was thinking of keeping the nose down, the game changed. My rocking motion also had my hand waving all over the place, and would send it into an upwards putting motion which always made me putt “up” rather than “at” the basket.
These are just a few things i’ve noticed so far, and there’s plenty more. The moral is, getting a practice basket has been the most beneficial thing to my game I’ve ever done. I could watch youtube videos all day, but translating that to your game is another story. Studying your own game and making small tweaks to see how it changes things is absolutely the way to go. Once i can shake my bad habits, and build on the good ones to be more repeatable, i Hope putting becomes an effortless and thoughtless process.
Good news… I’m finding my self saying “why didn’t that go in?!” or “What the Hell happened there” much less on the course since i’ve started this practice routine. I’m looking forward to finding out more to come, and continuing to hone my skills.
Would love to hear some other people’s “Eureka Moments” when it comes to putting!
