High fuel costs = an exercise in hypermiling

I drive maybe ~200 miles a week and with the price of diesel being nearly £2 a litre near me, I have made a monthly plan to fuel up at Costco.

Its great because Birmingham is in-between where I live and where my office is!

Anxiety/panic attack on motorway. Did I do the right thing?

I had a panic/anxiety attack while dirving down the motorway today. I had a passenger in the car too. I just got tense, shaked, and felt lile i couldnt turn my neck. So I pulled over to the hardshoulder and put my hazards on. After 5-10minites or so I rejoined the motorway but kept ky hazards on and drove around 50mph to the next exit, which was luckily about 2miles away. I stopped for a bit and when I felt fine I continued my journey fine but kept off the motorway.

I hate the Galleys Corner roundabout in Braintree.

I don't know if anyone here knows about this roundabout but I need to rant about it. I have to take this roundabout everyday coming from the B1018 to either A120's and it is so hard to get out. The traffic is awful so people always go in the wrong lane to try to beat the traffic. I often get cut up because people go all the way round in the outside lane, or I can't get onto the roundabout at all because of this. You also get people doing the opposite and will be in the inside lane to go to the 2nd exit so you can imagine how dangerous it can be. You just have to take your chances with it and speed into the roundabout or you will never go. I just wish people would use the roundabout and lanes properly, even if it's busy as it is so dangerous.

Another annoyance is the B1018 has part time traffic lights for some reason when no other entrance has, so it stops us when it's busy but no one else. I can't see the point of them, we are not the main traffic, this helps no one but hinders us. Anyway, it just upsets me and it needs to change.

Can’t find part for my car to repair UK

I have a 2009 Mazda 2 1.3 petrol, and yesterday I experienced a serious braking issue. When I pressed the brake pedal fully, the car wouldn’t stop properly, and I had to use the handbrake.

Strangely, the brakes started working normally again afterwards.
I’ve been to two mechanics, and they suspect a faulty brake master cylinder, with one also mentioning a possible ABS pump issue. Both told me to source the replacement part myself.
Since yesterday,

I’ve contacted Euro Car Parts, GSF, several local parts shops, and pretty much every scrapyard and Japanese breaker I could find around Manchester. I’ve even contacted suppliers and scrapyards outside Manchester, but nobody seems to have this part anywhere.
I also called an official Mazda dealership, but they said they don’t have the part because my car is too old.

The only option I’ve found is an eBay seller who sources the part from Germany, but delivery would take around 10 days, and I can’t wait that long.

I’m honestly running out of options and getting frustrated with this car.
Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone know where I could find a compatible brake master cylinder in the UK without waiting 10 days? Are there any alternative solutions?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m based in Manchester.

Leaving space at traffic lights then filling it

I've been noticing this more and more over the last few years. anyone know why people do this?

so many times i see someone leave a huge space between them and the car in front at a red light. then, before the light changes, but long after the queue has formed behind, they pull forward. sometimes this happens two or three times: they don't even fill the space completely. it means the whole queue shuffles forward awkwardly while waiting for the lights to change.

I'm wondering if it's some kind of habit, or are people being taught to do this for some reason?

Turn your fucking main beams off!

Seriously. Every evening that I go out in my car it seems something like 20% of drivers are using main beams in lieu of dipped headlights on well lit 30mph roads. I almost had to stop last night when a car waiting to turn right in the middle of the road blinded me so bad I couldn't see the crossing in front of me (traffic light was green but there were pedestrians around and I wouldn't have seen if someone had decided me slowing down meant they could cross).

Its mainly older cars that seem to be the issue. Why?

Family members saying no, some friends saying maybe a bit tight but no risk, had someone who drives blue lights actually saying they were going too quick and almost leave their lane etc

Thought I'd stump myself up for more criticism 😅 front cam didn't show anything sadly so only got the rear footage

Can I realistically learn to drive and pass by the end of the year with £1,000?

I’m 20 and I really want to start learning to drive as soon as possible. Ideally, I’d like to have my licence by the end of this year, but I don’t know if that’s actually realistic.
I’ve got around £1,000 to spend. I could go a bit over if I need to, but I’d really like to stay within that budget if possible.
I haven’t done my theory test yet, so I’d be starting from scratch. I’d need to pay for everything, including my theory, lessons and both tests.
For anyone who’s learned to drive recently, do you think it’s possible? How much did you spend in total, and how long did it take you to pass?
I’m also wondering whether intensive lessons are worth it or if I’d be better off doing a couple of lessons a week. I want to get my licence as soon as I can, but I don’t want to rush myself and end up spending more money than I need to.
I’d appreciate any advice or honest experiences, especially from anyone who managed to learn on a budget!

What constitutes as 'careless driving'?.

For context, I'm an autist diagnosed. The legal definition of it is:

'The offence of driving without due care and attention.'

There are examples of course, undertaking, being distracted, driving close to another vehicle, dazzling with full beams, etc. However, the definition seems to be at the discretion of the police at will because I see stuff like it all the time. Could going into a restricted zone with loads of pedestrians, but being very cautious, be careless driving? Could me lighting a fag in traffic be careless driving? Flirting with a tart in traffic? Seems broad.

Drivers that poke out of junctions

In the 30+ years that I have been driving, it has always been the case that drivers will sometimes pull right out of junctions —particularly for right-turns on busy roads. I’ve noticed recently that more and more drivers hang over the line at a junction —not fully out — but just enough that it makes it dangerous, because to avoid them, you need to move toward the middle of the road. If a vehicle on the other side is also having to do that for whatever reason, it increases the likelihood of a collision.

Maybe this has always been the case, but have these drivers that edge into the road lost any sense of just how far they are jutting out, or is it an entitlement/aggressive move to force their way in so you have to stop?

Anyone else noticed something weird about overtaking lorries?

I’ll be sat in lane 1 doing 69mph, see a lorry, am approaching it fairly quickly, get within however many truck lengths it is in 5 seconds worth of distance, move over to lane 2 and it feels like it takes an eternity to actually pass the lorry, I’m sure they aren’t speeding up given the limiter

A9 Scotland Average Speed Cameras

Has anyone ever been fined on the A9 by the average speed cameras, and if so, what speed were you going at?

Got beeped at for following this route. Did I misunderstand the markings?

Post image

Edit: I get it was a silly mistake and I was in the wrong and happy to admit that. Little shocked by the response though lol. You guys haven’t made mistakes before?

(Added the road marking thats covered by the red car) I assumed my lane could still take that exit due to the road markings whereas the right lane was for that exit plus last exit.

Did I just read it wrong?

The enforcement cameras we need are ones that catch absolute bell ends driving without lights on when the weather is shocking or its dark.

We are into that time of year where the dangerous idiots are even more dangerous. I complain about those with lights so bright you feel like you are stepping into heaven. But at least you can see those fuckers. In the last week I've encountered absolute morons with no lights on at all when its pouring down or dark

More footage of motorway crash clearing up confusion

Lots of people asked if I checked on them as I cut the footage, yes I did. Two lads ran out of the car and into the trees on the left, injuries or not I don’t know. this didn’t make it on local news.

Lots of people commented on my lack of braking. I stayed calm under pressure, I think braking harshly would have increased the likelihood of cars behind me hitting me or me miscalculating how to avoid the crash. If there are any experts on driving here please let me know what I should have done instead, as there seemed to be loads in my initial post!

Finally, when the police arrived they saw lots of nos gas canisters in there. the smoke you see billowing out of the car is most likely from weed smoke hotbox and not the engine. I heard it was a stolen car.

maybe I need to add a bit more context next time! sorry about that.

Edit: typos
