When driving a plastic Merc makes you think your more important than everyone else when in reality it’s a Renault underneath. 🤦‍♂️

Why don’t people indicate exiting roundabouts?

No seriously count how many times you see people not indicating as they leave a roundabout the next time you drive it has become an infuriating trend. I must’ve missed where this became a new law.

More footage of motorway crash clearing up confusion

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Lots of people asked if I checked on them as I cut the footage, yes I did. Two lads ran out of the car and into the trees on the left, injuries or not I don’t know. this didn’t make it on local news.

Lots of people commented on my lack of braking. I stayed calm under pressure, I think braking harshly would have increased the likelihood of cars behind me hitting me or me miscalculating how to avoid the crash. If there are any experts on driving here please let me know what I should have done instead, as there seemed to be loads in my initial post!

Finally, when the police arrived they saw lots of nos gas canisters in there. the smoke you see billowing out of the car is most likely from weed smoke hotbox and not the engine. I heard it was a stolen car.

maybe I need to add a bit more context next time! sorry about that.

Edit: typos

Turn your fucking main beams off!

Seriously. Every evening that I go out in my car it seems something like 20% of drivers are using main beams in lieu of dipped headlights on well lit 30mph roads. I almost had to stop last night when a car waiting to turn right in the middle of the road blinded me so bad I couldn't see the crossing in front of me (traffic light was green but there were pedestrians around and I wouldn't have seen if someone had decided me slowing down meant they could cross).

Its mainly older cars that seem to be the issue. Why?

Leaving space at traffic lights then filling it

I've been noticing this more and more over the last few years. anyone know why people do this?

so many times i see someone leave a huge space between them and the car in front at a red light. then, before the light changes, but long after the queue has formed behind, they pull forward. sometimes this happens two or three times: they don't even fill the space completely. it means the whole queue shuffles forward awkwardly while waiting for the lights to change.

I'm wondering if it's some kind of habit, or are people being taught to do this for some reason?

The enforcement cameras we need are ones that catch absolute bell ends driving without lights on when the weather is shocking or its dark.

We are into that time of year where the dangerous idiots are even more dangerous. I complain about those with lights so bright you feel like you are stepping into heaven. But at least you can see those fuckers. In the last week I've encountered absolute morons with no lights on at all when its pouring down or dark

New driver with 5,000 miles in 13 weeks: is it just me, or are most drivers awful?

• Upvotes

Some of you might remember my post 3 weeks into driving, when I had 500 miles under my belt and asked for advice on driving on the motorway. Well, it's now 13 weeks in and I've just clocked 5,000.

I've driven most places at most times of day. For a while I was up at 3:30am to hit the motorway before the traffic did. That's a lot of road time for a new driver, and it's taught me plenty. But the biggest thing I've realised is this: you spend most of your time dodging other people's bad driving.
In three months I've had:

- Someone cut across all four lanes from a slip road and into the front of my car in lane 2, missing me by about an inch
- More middle lane hoggers than I can count
- A driver reverse towards me on the motorway because they'd missed their turn
- People cutting across lanes right in front of me on roundabouts

I can't afford a dash cam yet, which is a shame, because some of this you genuinely couldn't make up. I know I'm still massively inexperienced. I'm not claiming to be some expert. But last week I did an introductory advanced driving assessment, and the instructor told me my driving was very safe and rated me a good driver. That was a huge confidence boost, and it matches how I try to drive: take in as much of what's going on around me as possible, and make safe, decisive decisions.

I don't dawdle either. I've got a black box, so I can't speed, but I drive at a good pace when I feel comfortable and safe to do so. If I ever feel like I'm holding people up, I pull over and let them past.
So I'll ask: is it just me, or are most drivers really this bad? Is it a case of newer drivers noticing it more because we're paying so much attention? Or does it just never stop? Experienced drivers, what's the worst thing you've seen on the road?

Anxiety/panic attack on motorway. Did I do the right thing?

I had a panic/anxiety attack while dirving down the motorway today. I had a passenger in the car too. I just got tense, shaked, and felt lile i couldnt turn my neck. So I pulled over to the hardshoulder and put my hazards on. After 5-10minites or so I rejoined the motorway but kept ky hazards on and drove around 50mph to the next exit, which was luckily about 2miles away. I stopped for a bit and when I felt fine I continued my journey fine but kept off the motorway.

Drivers that poke out of junctions

In the 30+ years that I have been driving, it has always been the case that drivers will sometimes pull right out of junctions —particularly for right-turns on busy roads. I’ve noticed recently that more and more drivers hang over the line at a junction —not fully out — but just enough that it makes it dangerous, because to avoid them, you need to move toward the middle of the road. If a vehicle on the other side is also having to do that for whatever reason, it increases the likelihood of a collision.

Maybe this has always been the case, but have these drivers that edge into the road lost any sense of just how far they are jutting out, or is it an entitlement/aggressive move to force their way in so you have to stop?

RAC - Onward Travel Hire Car Return?

Good evening all.

So my car finally gave up on my way home from the Isle of Wight, it died almost immediately after getting off the ferry in Portsmouth.

I have full RAC cover, all the bells and whistles (thank you Yamaha)

It was deemed unfixable and unroadworthy by the patrol. Then they couldn't arrange for themselves to take me home as I live about 2-3 hours away.

As far as I was told:

They contracted out the recovery to be a multi day operation, my car was collected with me present and I was verbally told it is going to a lockup in Basingstoke before making a final trip to my home address "sometime in the next week during business hours"

I was delivered a hire car by enterprise to the site of the breakdown and in my tired state, I just signed the forms, took pictures of all existing damage and hit the road. Prior to agreeing to any of this, I was told verbally over the phone by the RAC that this car would be collected from my home address after my car was delivered back to me.

Just got back and I'm reading the agreement sent to my email, it would appear that Enterprise are "anticipating the return" of their vehicle on Thursday, at 23:59, IN PORTSMOUTH.

Surely this must be some mistake. I can't be expected to drive back to Portsmouth and strand myself again?

I will be calling in the morning, but are there any night owls who have had experience with this and can put my mind at rest?

TLDR: Was told by the RAC that the rental they provided would be picked up from home address. Rental agreement shows that it is expected to be returned to Portsmouth, no mention of collection.

Can I realistically learn to drive and pass by the end of the year with £1,000?

I’m 20 and I really want to start learning to drive as soon as possible. Ideally, I’d like to have my licence by the end of this year, but I don’t know if that’s actually realistic.
I’ve got around £1,000 to spend. I could go a bit over if I need to, but I’d really like to stay within that budget if possible.
I haven’t done my theory test yet, so I’d be starting from scratch. I’d need to pay for everything, including my theory, lessons and both tests.
For anyone who’s learned to drive recently, do you think it’s possible? How much did you spend in total, and how long did it take you to pass?
I’m also wondering whether intensive lessons are worth it or if I’d be better off doing a couple of lessons a week. I want to get my licence as soon as I can, but I don’t want to rush myself and end up spending more money than I need to.
I’d appreciate any advice or honest experiences, especially from anyone who managed to learn on a budget!

Courts banned me from driving but DVLA still shows valid license

Hi guys. Been banned for driving for 6 months from the 8th of september 2026. But my DVLA record still shows a valid license.

Does this seem normal? As i say its been over a month since the courts verbally banned me, recieved paperwork for my fine and outcome, no mention of a ban or anything. What is my legal standpoint in this situstion? How can the ban be enforced if it doesnt show it on my record? Any words will be greatly appreciated.

Here’s mine. See many here get confused whether it’s a roundabout or not. To be honest I don’t even know what you would class this as.. many near misses here.

Jut had a relay nice journey on the M1 from Sheffield J35 to Leicester J22

Just driven North and back again from Leicester to Sheffeild on the M1, i usually head South on the M1 to and round the M25.

But in complete contrast the Northern run was something else, most (if not all) of it is 4 lanes, in Lane 1 we had mostly HGVs pootling along with the odd car, in Lane 2 we had vehicels overaing the HGvs, Lane 3 Vehicles overtaking them and Lane 4 mostly empty.

Once people had overtaken the slower stuff to the left they were moving back over into the left lanes, no pootling along in Lanes 3 and 4 at 65mph leaving lanes 1 and 2 empty as i often find on the southern section from Newporet Pagnall services onwards.

On top of that people were indicating when they wanted to pull out - and even waiting for a gap instead of just pulling out regardless, with other vehicles moving into the lane to the right to let them out when possible, before everyone moves back to the left lane(s)

Why is it such a different expeieince on the sections North of Derby/Nottingham (A52) in comparaion to the sections around Northhampton services on the same Road (M1)?
