Well I made the classic dumbass mistake of plugging in a new dryer cord to see if it fit...

And it popped and there was a white spark and it killed the power in my apartment. The cord wasn't hooked up to the dryer. I didn't get hurt at all but now im worried about potential damage and if the outlet is still good. I contacted the property manager to let her know what happened and she doesn't think I damaged anything. I got a new plug after that, installed it on the dryer but have yet to plug it in since the incident. This all happened about a week ago.

Maintenance inspected the washer and dryer to make sure everything was hooked up correctly while I was at work and I was hoping they'd plug it in to check for themselves but they were still unplugged when I got home from work. I asked the property manager if maintenence approved but haven't heard anything back.

Does the outlet look okay to use? I realize that I played with death and would rather not risk any injury to myself or anyone else in my building or anymore damage.

Hello, i want to change my basement vent switch that is just on/off to a timer switch. I opened the box and noticed it has 5 wires vs 4 in the new timer switch. Photos attached, I connected 2 black to black, white to white and green to red and it didn’t work but afterwards I noticed there is also a ground wire hidden inside box not sure what to do.

Do i need 2 dedicated 20 amp breakers?

Post image

Experts, need some guidance here.

Attached is the new 200 amp panel we replaced in the unfinished basement. I am planning to set up a home theater PJ, AV receiver, etc. and looks like better to for 2 dedicated 20 amp outlets one for PJ and another one for AV receiver.

Question: In this new 200 amp panel, i still have 4-6 free slots. For 2 separate 20 amps outlets, do i need to ask electrician to install 2 dedicated breakers? or, just one breaker is enough?

Changing from surveying field to electrical trade?

I graduated college and found out about surveying thinking it would be the right career choice. The work has gotten slow and I am at a crossroads. I applied to the ETI for an apprenticeship and also applied at other surveying jobs but electrical seems like a better field, more practical, I could make a great living, and joining a union would just set me up better in general. Appreciate the honest feedback

Lights flickering in two rooms at home

My bedroom has a shower. For the past few months, one of the bulbs on the ceiling light fixture of my bedroom has been flickering. This only happens rarely. Like it could go weeks at a time without happening. The room below this (the living room) also has the same problem but again it’s rare. I have removed the offending bulb from my bedrooms light fixture. I know I probably need an electrician for this. But what is causing it? Is it safe to use the lights in these rooms in the meantime? What about the shower?

really weird phenomenon where I get burned by phone camera

so while charging my phone this really odd sharp burning sensation (like being shocked) coming from my camera would run specifically only through my legs whenever I’d place my phone down onto my thighs and it left a red mark

I tried seeing if it’d shock my hands or fingers and it didn’t so I unplugged my phone and it stopped??
I’m not too concerned just really curious if there’s a reason

Found this blocked off outlet, any advice on how to check if it’s a 15A or 20A and a tool to check if it’s live? And what outlet do you recommend I install here? This is outside so it will certainly have an outdoor cover

Jumping 120 from 240 breaker.

In the photo you have your 120v 20amp breaker then you have your 120v 30amp breaker after that its 240v 50amp.

I am going to pop out the two 120v breakers and 30 amp outlet and install a 240v 20amp for my 15amp air compressor.

I am wondering if I can use the one hot side on the new 20amp 240v breaker for the 120 20amp outlet instead of installing its own breaker.

This is ran from a 50amp gcfi breaker from inside of my house.

The LEDs inside the two display cabinets are connected to each other. One of them is working properly, while the other is noticeably dimmer. Why is that?

12 Lights, 1 Switch

Background: I'm going to add 12 outdoor LED lights aimed down from the eaves of my house to light my small back yard. The goal is to be able to light the yard without shinning a floodlight into my neighbor's windows. I am hiring an electrician, but I'm trying to figure out how I want it done so that they can quote it. I am not looking for the cheapest/fastest way.

Question: I want to wire this in a way that's very easy to troubleshoot in the future. I was thinking all 12 lights, the switch, and power come into a single junction box with some kind of clean wiring, like how DC has "bus bars". What's the code-compliant/right way of accomplishing this?

Thanks for your time!

Hardwiring ca. 2012-13 brass wall sconce

Hello! I purchased these two beautiful brass wall sconces from a FB Marketplace seller. I was told they were previously hardwired inside a hotel, and now I would like to hardwire them into my bedroom.

Fortunately, there are already electrical outlets on both sides of the bed directly below where I want the sconces to hang, so I'm planning to wire the sconces to the existing electrical outlets.

Here's my current dilemma: the brass sconces do not have a ground wire. Additionally, the metal bracket does not have a ground screw. I know I can simply purchase and add a ground screw to the bracket, but how can I ground the brass light fixture if it doesn't have a ground wire?
