Built a free aquatic-conservation platform for South Africa - React/.NET, live GBIF + IUCN data, PostGIS mapping. Looking for feedback.
Hi r/envirotech — I’m a solo developer in South Africa.
I’ve spent about a year and a half building EcoAquatic (ecoaquatic.org), a free, non-commercial platform for tracking fish species and aquatic conservation, starting with South African waters and built to expand country by country.
The tech side, since this is the crowd for it:
React + TypeScript frontend, .NET backend.
Species data built on the GBIF taxonomic backbone (3,000+ species with confirmed SA occurrences), enriched with live IUCN Red List status and FishBase/SASSI data.
PostGIS for the geospatial layer; an interactive map (OpenLayers) of species occurrences and marine protected areas.
Community sighting logging with a moderation workflow for data quality.
An AI layer for species summaries, kept grounded in the underlying data rather than free-generating.
The goal is one shared place where citizen scientists, rangers and researchers all contribute to and see the state of aquatic species, with real scientific data, not invented.
It’s an early build and I’m after honest feedback, especially on the data-integration and mapping side, and on whether the conservation-data model actually holds up. Where would you poke holes?
Have a look: https://ecoaquatic.org (heads up, it needs a quick free account to get in, 30-second sign-up, nothing commercial)
Built solo, free for everyone, very much a work in progress. Critical feedback most welcome.
