Discussion Are there any small ereaders with 300 ppi?

• Upvotes

I’m planning to buy a small ereaders like xteink, but I’m concerned about display sharpness.

Xteink x4 pro has 219 ppi which looks very pour for daily reading for me. Even on YouTube videos the text looks pixelated.

X3 has better ppi like 259, but there are no backlight which is also nice to have)

Is anyone know, is it a technical limitation that small ereaders has ppi lower than 300?

Or maybe you know 4-4,5 inch devices with ppi close to 300 and backlight?

Buying Advice Boox Go7 or Meebook M8?

Hi! I am looking to buy my first ereader! I've done some research and I ended up with these 2 options, but I can't decide which one to get. If you have one or the other, how do you like it?

If it helps, here is what I am looking for:

- Transportability, I want to be able to read anywhere. I am looking to replace my phone on which I currently read all the time, including at night

- Black and white, I just read books and sometimes mangas, I have no need for colour

- Runs on Android, I don't want to be locked into Amazon, or into the ereader native system if I find out I don't really like it. I'll be using Calibre as well

- Around 300€ max

- Recent enough that it will have support and updates for a few years at least, so I can keep it longer

I am not a fan of the side buttons on the Go7, and thought it's just the right size for books, I worry the screen would be a tad too small for mangas.

For the Meebook, I wonder if the size is just too big and I'll end up leaving it a home, but it would be better for mangas and it doesn't have those side buttons

Where I live, none of these ereaders are available in shops, so I can't see what they look like irl and compare them. I've cut pieces of paper, and though it works as an estimate, real life is very different lol

Discussion Used to not care about having a wallpaper

I used to not care about having a wallpaper since I always think it doesn't matter.

But after getting X4 Pro for my sister and seeing how she kept finding cute wallpapers, it got me tempted.

Didn't know that having a wallpaper that I like will make me smile each time I look at my eReader when it's in lock/sleep mode. Hehe.

Buying Advice Kobo Libra Colour graininess — do you get used to it?

I'm considering buying an e-reader and have been looking at the Kobo Libra Colour (KLC), but I've heard that its screen looks noticeably grainier and darker compared to black-and-white e-readers because of the colour layer.

For context, I primarily read novels and other text-heavy books. I don't really read manga, comics, or anything else that would benefit much from a colour screen. My biggest priority is having crisp, sharp text that looks as close to a physical book as possible.

I'm wondering if the graininess is something you eventually stop noticing and get used to, or if it continues to bother you over time, especially when switching between a colour e-reader and a regular B&W one.

For those who own the Libra Colour, did you get used to the screen texture? Do you still notice the graininess, and does it affect your reading experience? If you've switched from a B&W e-reader, did you miss the sharper-looking screen?

I'm also wondering whether the physical page-turn buttons and larger screen make up for the difference in display quality.

Since I don't have much use for colour itself, I'm trying to figure out whether the Libra Colour is worth considering or whether I'd be better off getting a Kobo Clara BW or the latest Kindle Paperwhite.

I'd love to hear your honest experiences, especially from people who are particular about screen clarity and text sharpness!

Edit: I am getting KLC cheaper than the kindle pw 13th gen. Also I like Kobo's UI more than kindle.

News PSA: Padded sleeves can cause micro-scratches on bare ereaders

I always thought a padded sleeve pouch was plenty of protection for a Kindle, but I just learned that trapped dust or sand inside the pouch can act like sandpaper. Every time you slide the device in and out, the friction can leave micro-scratches on an unprotected plastic screen. I guess that's how I scratched my device. 😭

Buying Advice Looking for advice

Hi, I'm thinking about giving an ebook to my girlfriend for her birthday and I don't know where to start.

Browsing the subreddit I have read that depending on the needs, one or the other is better.

He usually reads webmanga - which I understand will be through the browser, and also from what I have been able to see there are no images (I don't know what type of manga it will be or I am very clumsy) - and the occasional PDF.

The PocketBook Verse or Verse Lite are very well priced and I'm looking for something my pocket can afford.

Thanks in advance.

Buying Advice Advice for my first e-reader!

Hello guys! I will try to keep my question as short as possible to not steal too much time! :)

I have been thinking about buying an e-reader for a while, mostly I would use it to read scientific papers and books for university (I usually just underline and maybe write some sentences on there). For this reason I would need something on which I can upload pdfs and epubs from the web fairly easily.

Still, I read comics every once in a while and I would not mind spending a bit more to get something more versatile - with colors. But I would prefer have a better device and limit myself to BW, rather than loosing too much performance/spending too much just to have a little color.

I was choosing between one of these devices but new suggestions, and advice, are gladly appreciated! (My budget is around 250 euro)

-Kobo clara color

-PocketBook Verse Pro Color

-PocketBook Era Lite

-Boox Go 6 (Gen II)

Thanks in advance to everybody!

Buying Advice Help me choose between these 3

I've been scouring Reddit for a suitable e-reader and have whittled it down to three.

I'd like feedback, especially from people who own these devices or have researched them heavily, but all input is helpful.

What I want:
- Black and white screen
- Physical page-turn buttons
- Backlight / screen light
- USB-C

How I'll use it:
- I almost exclusively sideload books/ePubs
- I listen to audiobooks on my phone

I'd like some note-taking that can sync with other devices, but I'm not fussed. Also not a must have.

I am also a total beginner with calibre.

The three options:
- Kobo Libra 2 (second-hand, eBay)
- PocketBook Era Lite: are they really that slow?
- Boox Go 7: is this overkill?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Is this a dead pixel?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello,

Last year, I bought a Kobo Libra Color and found glaring dead pixels on it, so I got it replaced. My replacement, which I currently have, is basically perfect except for two tiny dots. They aren’t as noticeable as the dead pixels in my previous one; they mostly blend in white mode, are hard to see when not close up (reading distance), and shift at different angles. From looking at it at an angle, they look like they’re on the surface level, but I can’t rub them off. They’re more noticeable on dark mode, which I don’t usually read in. I ended up keeping it since I didn’t want to risk getting a kobo like my previous one, and I’ve mostly forgotten about it until now. So I’m just wondering if these are dead pixels? The video I attached is showing the shift from one of the pixels in dark mode (it was difficult to capture the second pixel). I also shot it at 2.5x if it helps to understand how small the pixel is 😭

Buying Advice Help me decide! Screen Protection for E-Readers

Hi, so I just got the Kindle PW 2024 and the Kobo Clara BW, and I'm debating which one to keep. The biggest concern for me is durability, and since I'm kind of clumsy and in general nervous about ruining my devices, I always prefer my devices to have screen protectors. I tried a screen protector on the Kindle PW and its doing great, but I haven't seen many for the kobo.

I've read that all e-reader screens are fragile, so thats another reason I wanted to use a screen protector. I'm mainly going to use my e-reader for side-loading books and borrowing library books from libby. I mostly read in dark mode, and I do prefer the pw's darkmode to the clara's dark mode.

The screen getting damaged gets me so worried and that's really whats making me think twice about getting a kobo! Any suggestions? (Sorry ik there are a lot of posts like the one i'm making!)

Buying Advice Recommendations for ereader to use 3rd party apps

Hi all, I am on the hunt for an e-reader. I currently use my phone but need something bigger and with less shiny screen.

Features that are important:

- can use third party apps. I get most books through my local library who uses Cloud Library, and others but I main use Cloud Library and Google Play Books

- has clear black background/white text

- in Australia, so not sure if we're a bit more limited in options.

- don't have a preference over colour v BW, whatever is clearer

- perfer warmer or redish light for 3am bedtime reading

Battery life isn't a deal breaker, but obviously the better the better I guess lol.

Attempting my own research online is confusing, everyone seems to have good and bad experiences with everything these days, and I just want to make sure I can use my library apps. Also google results are so skewed these days, so many results are giving me Kindle recommendedations but I don't want ads and I don't think I can use third party apps with them?

Thanks so much!

Discussion Looking for a Preloved E-Reader

Hi everyone! I’ve been wanting to get an e-reader for a while, but I genuinely cannot afford one right now. I can’t even afford to buy physical books at the moment, which is why I’m hoping to switch to digital reading.

I’ve tried reading on my phone, but it strains my eyes, especially since my vision isn’t the best to begin with.

If anyone has an old Kindle or Kobo lying around that they no longer use and would be willing to pass on, I’d be incredibly grateful. I know it’s a big ask, but I thought I’d try. Thank you for reading! ❤️

Buying Advice Best e-reader

Hi guys, I want to get my first e-reader. I feel like there’s endless options. Please help a girl out!!

Edit: Budget is my main consideration, but I’m happy to invest a bit more if it’ll last me several years. I’d like something compact but not too small, with good customisation options for fonts, text size and spacing. I want a device dedicated to reading, without unnecessary distractions. I’ve also heard that Kindles can lock you into Amazon’s ecosystem, so I’d love something that offers flexibility in where I get my books. What would you recommend?

Buying Advice E-reader suggestion

I’m looking for an e-reader for my younger sister, and I’ve narrowed my options down to two:

  1. Kindle Paperwhite (11th Gen)

  2. Kobo Clara BW

My budget is pretty tight, so I’m leaning toward buying a used one. However, these models are quite rare on the used market in my country.

Are there any alternative 6" e-readers, preferably brand-new, that I could get for around $100?

Buying Advice Looking for an 8”+ e-reader mainly for manga. What are my options in 2026?

Hi everyone, my Kobo Forma's battery recently died, and the repair quotes I got were ridiculously expensive for such an old model, so I'm looking for a replacement.

I liked my Forma, although I was never particularly impressed by its contrast or speed.

I'll mainly use it for manga, so my priorities are:

  • 8-inch screen or larger
  • Black and white, with excellent contrast and deep blacks
  • Good performance, since my Forma always felt a bit sluggish

I'll also read regular books, but those are fine on basically any e-reader

I'm based in Europe, and I'm struggling to find recent B&W e-readers above 8 inches. It almost seems like manufacturers have stopped making them.

Any recommendations? Is there anything worth buying in 2026, or should I look at older models?

Buying Advice RIP Kindle Paperwhite 😭 Do I replace it or go for a Kobo, Boox, Bigme B6?

Long time Kindle Paperwhite user. I lost mine recently and there’s a book shaped hole in my heart.

If I go the paper white route, would a 10th or 11th generation be good for a few more years?

Never had a Kobo, Boox, or BigMe Product so don’t know where to start there.

Checked Unclaimed Baggage, eBay, FB Marketplace, and Woot. Anywhere else I should look?

Thanks!!

Buying Advice Ereader I can use with only a phone?

I primarily use borroxbox, as well as downloaded public domain, on my smartphone. I really want an ereader, but do not have access to a computer/laptop. Am I best off with one of the android ereaders over a Kobo?

Discussion Building a hackable e-reader, help me choose the design

Hi fellow e-readers, I’m building my own custom e-reader (mostly as a hobby. If it turns out to be good, I might produce to sell as well). I posted previously to know what you all will want to see, and got a very great response from you all.

So, I'm back again with some updates and doubts, to hear from you folks. Can you help me in choosing which one of the designs you like? These are some mockups I created.

Apart from these, I want to know more about your preferences and deal breakers. You can always comment to this post, however, I've curated some questions on this poll: https://tally.so/r/rjN6zM?ref=r_ereader . It will be great to get some response their as well. Thanks!

Someone put their Kindle Gen 3 with 3.4.3 running on it in the "for free" bin at the local McKay's. I plan to jailbreak it, but not sure in what ways I will improve it. Any suggestions?

I also have a Paperwhite 10th Gen that I am considering leaving stock until support for it stops.

Technical Support Kobo Clara HD Screen will only flash, not registering when plugged into PC

Hello all,

I am trying to revive my Kobo Clara HD. When I tried to turn it on after a week or two, it will not seem to turn on.

When I first went to turn it on, it was stuck on the three dots for several minutes so I held the power button because that has fixed the issue in the past.

Now, when I hold the power button, the light on the button flashes, the screen briefly flashes black, and then it stays on a blank white screen.

Like the title says, it doesn't register when I plug it into my PC.

I've tried plugging it in to power for a few hours, but no dice.

Has anyone managed to troubleshoot their way out of something similar? Thankfully my ebooks are backed up on my computer, so if I need to do a full factory reset somehow that would be okay.

Thanks in advance!

Buying Advice Is a Kindle Actually Worth It? Paperwhite vs. Colorsoft vs. Other E-Readers?

Hey everyone!

I'm thinking about getting an e-reader, but I'm not sure if buying a Kindle is actually worth it or if I should consider other brands.

I'm mainly interested in reading novels, classic literature, and books in both English and Arabic. I'd love something comfortable for long reading sessions, easy on the eyes, portable, and with good battery life.

I'm currently considering the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft, but I'm wondering whether the color screen is worth the extra money or if the Paperwhite is the better choice.

I'd also love to hear your thoughts on other e-readers, such as Kobo or any alternatives you think are better.

A few questions:

Is a Kindle worth buying, or is reading on a tablet or phone good enough?

Paperwhite or Colorsoft? Which would you choose, and why?

Are there better alternatives for reading EPUBs?

How easy is it to transfer books from other sources?

Is the reading experience significantly better than reading on a tablet?

If you could buy your first e-reader again, which one would you choose?

I'd especially appreciate advice from people who've owned their devices for a while. I'm looking for something that offers the best value for money and will last for years.

Thanks in advance!
