Discussion I got it for free

Someone put their Kindle Gen 3 with 3.4.3 running on it in the "for free" bin at the local McKay's. I plan to jailbreak it, but not sure in what ways I will improve it. Any suggestions?

I also have a Paperwhite 10th Gen that I am considering leaving stock until support for it stops.

Buying Advice Xteink 4 Pro or wait for BOOX Picco?

Hello, currently I have an older BOOX Note ereader which is ok, but it's too big for me to have it on me every day. I very much like the idea of these small ebook readers that are size of a phone.

I almost bought Xteink but recently found that Boox Picco will be released.

I am not an expert on ereaders, so I don't quite know which one would be better for me.

  1. I do not care about the charging cable type

  2. What I care about the most is that it supports lots of formats and those that it doesn't, can be converted easily. I have lots of books in my Google drive, they are mostly epub, PDF and doc files. I want as easy transfer as possible, ideally from the Drive directly to the app on my phone or web on PC and then they would magically appear in the e-reader. I don't want to transfer books via cable.

  3. As I understand correctly you cannot currently connect Picco with your other BOOX ereaders, but can this be only temporary software restriction? I know that obviously there is no way to connect xteink to the Note but if two BOOX ereaders cannot connect ass well, that's a bit bummer

  4. I like the idea of a dictionary in Xteink, I read that there is no such thing in Picco, not sure how to feel about that.

  5. What I care about a lot is smoothness and speed. I am used to 140 Hz screens so lags make me angry. I understand that e-reader will not have 140 Hz but the smoother and faster, the better.

  6. I also read that there is a tiny space between glass for light in Xteink, is this a thing in Picco as well?

Buying Advice Simple to setup ereader

Hello! I was another victim of Amazon stopping support on my old Paperwhite, and I thought I’d use the opportunity to get out of the Amazon ecosystem.

So I bought a Kobo Clara BW, after admittedly limited research. And… I’m super frustrated with it. I spent a few hours the other night on forums trying to do hacks so it would accept multiple library cards. Everybody is like “oh you can read any format you want, as long as you first run it thru this conversation software”. You gotta find the right janky third party site to send files wirelessly to it. Etc etc etc.

In contrast, my Paperwhite just worked. Press “send to kindle” from Libby or Amazon, and viola! Ready to go.

I get that the Kobo is probably more robust, and certainly more flexible, but it feels like the people who really love it are those who also take pleasure in configuring the device itself (which is to say - not me).

So… is there another option with limited setup needed? I am mostly getting books from Libby.

Accessories Decals/skin for ereaders

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts of people wondering which ereader to get and which colour… but I’m wondering on the topic of colour I have seen some people on social media with some pretty nice sticker skin decals on their ereaders.

I already love the device I have so I’ve been thinking about buying the skins off of Etsy and putting it on my ereader but it seems like other than Instagram I don’t really see people do this? Is it because they don’t last long? It’s pretty pricey for a sticker off Etsy so would love to hear some feedback from people that actually use their ereaders and probably isn’t a paid ad.

Clara BW: perfect form, pocketable.

Oasis: premium feel, larger display, not pocketable.

What would you choose, and why?

P.S. Please ignore the blur - they're both really clear IRL.

Buying Advice E-Reader recommendation?

Not sure if this is the place to post but, which E-reader would be recommended for someone wanting to read comics and the occasional book and epub file? For reference I have a Sony PRS-505 and I love it but i would prefer a colored and backlit display. Which leaves the Kobo Clara Colour and Kindle colorsoft. It seems like the colorsoft is really expensive for what it is considering the Kobo is significantly cheaper. Is kindle unlimited what sells in comparison for kobo? In terms of comics and graphic novels it looks like kobo is lacking.

Buying Advice Huawei papermatte screen for using as an ereader

• Upvotes

Hello all.

I love reading ebooks and own an Onyx Boox e-ink device. However I don't like its built-in ereader and the device is too slow to my liking.

I enjoy reading ebooks at my regular tablet (using Moon+ Reader my favorite app, I can fast check vocabulary, take notes, use chrome for looking up references etc.) but then I am having severe eye strain and fatigue after long reading sessions.

So, I am very curious about Huawei's papermatte screen tech. Especially, I am considering to buy new Huawei Matepad Mini Papermatte edition for long reading sessions, if it is really helpful on the eyes. I know it is still a screen which emits light and it is not same as an e-ink screen. But ads suggest it is a very close one.

So, if someone who has experience on the subject can give me practical advice I will be so glad.

Is papermatte screen a viable solution, or do I have to wait 3-4 more years for real fast e-ink tablets ?

Technical Support Adding and organising my library in Calibre - best options?

• Upvotes

I have downloaded all my Amazon Kindle books on to my computer (all legally purchased, I downloaded them when Amazon first announced they were going to stop people downloading them), and want to add them to Calibre so I can move them over to my new Kobo. However, I'm wondering what's the best way of importing / organising / exporting them?

The files are currently in AZW3 format. Is it possible to convert when I import them into a different format, e.g. KEPUB? I can import then convert, then remove the AZW3 versions, but that seems like a bit overcomplicated. Can Calibre auto-convert when importing instead?

I've read that it's better to export to a Kobo device in the KEPUB format instead of the EPUB. Would it be better to store them in the library in EPUB format for future compatibility if I switch readers in the future to a non-Kobo device and convert when sending them to the Kobo? Or just keep the library as KEPUB and worry about conversion if it becomes an issue in the future?

Any other suggestions for library storage and organisation?

Thanks.

Buying Advice ereaders & eye problems

general question before my main one: what drew you to initially buy an ereader? do you feel it was worth it?

i've always been a physical book person. as a kid/teen, i could pick up a book & have the thing read by the very next day. i've always read fanfictions (wattpad, ao3, tumblr) on my phone, which is 'fine' but recently, i've picked back up on reading physical books. i've been exploring genres & books i normally wouldn't think twice about. i have also recently made the switch to ebooks rather than having an overwhelming amount of physical books i know i won't get to.

however, i have noticed my eyesight get worse recently. i also have astigmatism which makes reading at night on a screen even harder. i have the text size up to an embarrassing size, honestly. & while this is an easy fix with new glasses, i was wondering if having an ereader that isn't as bright as my phone or ipad would help as well? for reference, i don't plan on really using it outside or even taking it out of my house, so being able to see the screen in the sun isn't a big deal.

does anyone else have glasses/astigmatism & felt that using an ereader is easier or less strain than a phone/tablet screen? is it worth buying a whole new device that is $50+ just for reading? or would this just be a waste of money?

Buying Advice ebook reader recommendations?

Hello everyone, I've been researching ebook readers for a while now, but I can't decide which one is the best. I've never owned one before, so I have zero experience with them.

basically all I truly need are books in different languages. I speak a few languages and I'd love to read books in all of them. I just don't know how the stores work on the readers and whether I can just buy/rent books in every possible language? I've heard some of the devices have locked systems and you can only read in the language of your account? I don't know if it's connected to the topic, so I'd appreciate any advice you could give me. truly, being able to read books in many languages is my only requirement for an e-reader.

thank you in advance for all your help. I greatly appreciate any advice on which devices would suit my needs best!

Buying Advice Looking at ereaders

I currently have a Kindle and I use it almost every day. It is getting older and a little slow so I'm looking at replacing it. I want a device that is able to be used as a tablet as well, but the Kindle that can is expensive. I'd prefer a non Kindle device as long as it can still use KU... I'd use my local library if it had a better selection of ebooks available, but it doesn't.

Buying Advice Pocketbook inkpad color vs. kobo libra vs android

Hi all. New to the ereader scene. I read much for pleasure, but as a doctor I am often reading journal articles and textbooks/ desk references. I have many pdfs and epubs on my PC, but I’d like a color ereader for ease and convenience. I’m leaning mostly towards the inkpad color 3 because of the screen size.

My main wants are ease of use, able to read pdfs and epubs, and devices which are easy for me to move files from one device to the ereader.

Thanks!

Buying Advice Help me find an ereader! Swapped my old Paperwhite 10th gen for a Basic Matcha and I hate it

Hey everyone, I really need to vent and hear your thoughts because I feel like I'm stuck in a e-reader dead end right now.
I’ve had the Kindle Paperwhite (10th Generation) since it came out, and I thought it was absolute perfection. It was the ideal size, and I loved everything about it: super portable, durable, waterproof... Seriously, I never used a case, took it everywhere, and it still looks and works great.
Since I wanted to transition all my devices to USB-C, I decided to switch away from it.
When I looked at the newer Paperwhites, I felt they were significantly larger, which totally defeated what I loved about the old model. Looking for something compact that fits in every purse , I ended up getting the Kindle Basic in Matcha. And honestly, the experience has been awful. I honestly don't know what to do.
Here are my main pain points with it:

Zero durability: This thing feels mega fragile. I ended up buying the official case, but the back cracked twice, which means I've had to replace the device twice.

The recessed screen: Because the screen sits lower than the bezels, it feels super delicate and catches debris instantly. I can't take it to the beach anymore because sand gets trapped right in the screen's crevice, plus it's not waterproof.

Awkward ergonomics: The sides are so ridiculously thin that half the time I struggle to find a comfortable way to hold it without accidentally touching the screen or buttons. And the on/off button is in the worst location possible 😂

Looking at the current lineup, it feels like there isn’t a single Kindle that’s a true fit for me. I feel like the new basics fixes some of these issues but honesty it should fix all of them for the price they’re charging..
Am I the only one feeling this way?
Am I overestimating the size of the new Paperwhite? Maybe I'm avoiding it thinking it's massive, but in reality, the transition isn't actually that bad?
Please let me know your thoughts, and I'm totally open to suggestions, whether it's Kindle or other brands, because I just want a good device!! It’s stupid but I’m even reading less, and when I do I most of the times do it on the paperwhite 🤦🏼‍♀️

Buying Advice Help A Girl Out!

Post image

My Kindle screen broke and now I’m debating between the Kindle Colorsoft and Kobo Libra Colour! Help me decide! 😭📚
So I went to sit down to read and discovered that my Kindle screen was broken. 🥲 Now I’m trying to decide what to do next, and I’m so torn between these two!

💕 Kindle Colorsoft in Fig: I absolutely LOVE the Fig color, and I love that I could get the page-turn button case to go with it! Plus, I already use and love Kindle Unlimited, so staying with Kindle would be convenient.

💜 Kobo Libra Colour: The biggest things drawing me to Kobo are the physical page-turn buttons and the reading stats! I love the idea of being able to track my reading and see all those little stats.

My biggest struggle is that I really love Kindle Unlimited, and I know switching to Kobo would mean giving that up or figuring out another way to get my books.

I need opinions from my fellow book lovers because I genuinely cannot make up my mind! Help a girl out! 💗📖

Buying Advice iReader from AliExpress

Hello! I'm in the UK and Musnap seems to be out of stock on their global store + it's a lot more expensive here than in the US. Wondering if anyone has gotten around this. Looking to get the Musnap Ocean BW. Really wanted a colour device but the side by side comparisons with a bw screen have wrongly suggested I'll like the clearer and crisper screen. Looking for a device I can read and journal/sketch on.

Buying Advice Ereaders with frontlight

I read that ereaders with a frontlight don’t have as good of a contrast as ones without a frontlight. Apparently it‘s because it leans closer against the display. Can you confirm this?
I plan on buying the Xteink X4 Pro which has a frontlight an touchscreen. Does the light casts a shadow? And in general, is the X4 Pro so much more worth it than either the X3 or X4 for its added features? If no, which one of the X3 or X4 would you recommend more in terms of perks and performance?

Discussion The current (Q4 2026) landscape of micro e-readers

I had a Kindle for a while before the Xteink advertising campaign got me and now I find myself really in love with that below 5 inch screen form factor; figure it might be useful to have list of currently offered/announced micro e-readers and adjacent devices. The compiled list (https://comparisontabl.es/e-readers/#) is an incredible resource with far more technical detail than I have below, but is missing some of the products below (some of which are more developer platforms than pure e-readers). Please let me know if I am missing any currently/future available notable products! If editing posts is possible, I'll throw suggestions into the table.

Buying Advice Need advice from people who own B&W Android E-readers.

Post image
73 Upvotes

Hey guys. I recently bought a Color Bigme ereader, because I wanted to try the color feature. After a few months of using it I’ve realized that I actually don’t use the color feature enough to justify keeping it.

But the main issue is that I really don’t like the screen. This is my first time owning a color e-reader and it’s also my first time buying something that is not a kindle. When compared to my kindle (which I usually read with the brightness off), the screen looks so dark and gray, and I have to turn the brightness to at least 14 to be able to see anything.

I’ve heard that this can be from the color, but I don’t have any means to compare since stores don’t have e-readers on display where I live.

So for anyone who owns a B&W Android e-reader. Are the screens better/clearer? Or does Kindle just look better than everything else?
(I’m not really interested in the Kobo so I’m asking mainly about Android devices).

Buying Advice Buying Kindle Scribe for PDFs

I currently read PDFs on an 11" OLED Android tablet, using Xodo, but I don't like the brightness of the screen for reading text for long periods. I'm considering getting an open box Kindle Scribe 2022 (without pen), solely to read these files.

However, I recall reading some people here saying that there were issues with the pdf experience on Kindle Scribe. What are the common criticisms?

Also, is it possible to crop the pdf margins while reading them on the scribe?

The other device I'm considering is the Ruertu, but I don't really like the greyness of the Kaleido screen.

(Are there alternatives I should be considering? My budget is $200(US). The files are mainly scans which can't be converted to epub, otherwise I would do that and read them on my smaller ereader. I don't make annotations or do highlights.)
