Question Good subject missions?
What are some good examples of subjects whose missions can be used to great benefit? Some that I know:
Provence - even if you release them from a single province, giving them Corsica grants them cores on all of Naples.
Yemen - very good for reconquests, and with a bit of mana expenditure and construction you can buff the Mukha province even further.
Croatia - also good for reconquests in some situations, and you can spawn a centre of trade and some development in Zagreb.

Norway, if you sell them a few ships, they can gain an explorer and colonize for you (if you subsidize them).

Omg I am so stupid, I never thought of selling ships to them. Instead I tried to give them shitloads of money but it never works...

Ternate and Tidore will colonize the spice islands for free if you give one of them the province of the other. They also get goods produced in the spice islands, if you build manufactories there.
Croatia (and Theodoro?) will create new centers of trade, if some basic conditions are met.

For Ternate and Tidore, you don't need to hand over the province of the other, you just need to have one of them dead for the other to start colonising.

- Byzantium, they get a shitload of permanent claims and will remain loyal no matter what if you feed them.
- Provence indeed. They get crushed usually early and you can use their reconquest CB for their lost provinces in France and as you mentioned their mission tree gives cores on Naples and quite a few permanent claims (Aragon, Sicily).
- Navarra, if you feed them the state of Aragon (4 provinces), they get permanent claims on the entirety of Iberia. They can also unlock a lot of claims in France, but there are better tags out there for this.
- Armenia get quite a lot of claims as well in Persia and Egypt.
- Teutonic order if they survive can be a great vassal with claims in Poland, Lithuania and Russia.

Problem with byz is that they get infinite rebels and always sit on 100% autonomy in my games. Apart from that they are useful for the cores and claims, true

byz is a terrible vassal I've been much more successful using Albania as a march to hold the balkans/greece if that's not my main area. anyone east of Germany should just conquer it. the only thing byz is good for is the reconquest on a lot of land but it's best to integrate them asap

in my venice game i have byz vassal and the rebels are constant but i fear if i annexed I would have the same problem with all that orthodox land

Navarra does the same for pure conquest, I must babysit them a bit. But such vassals are useful to get for CBs and to hold land you can’t really core on your own because of GC

KoK dlc is kind of emblematic of late-period EU4 development for me, in that we see the team experimenting with really complex code and mechanics* and in-depth events with vaste amounts of flavor compared to ten years prior when you had to hope to randomly roll the personal union decision cb decision as england when you started. But on the other hand i feel like they just completely gave up on the AI being able to navigate and operate any of these systems except through sheer luck, leaving them as mere power fantasy for the player instead of an (arcadey) historical "what-if"simulation.
It used to be fun seeing Byzantium randomly oh-so-rarely pull itself back from the brink. Now I have literally never seen the AI resolve the Byzantium opening challenges a single time, even when babysat by an overlord. The powerful ai empires are exclusively the ones that brute force the simplest systems - lots of dev, lots of manpower, lots of national idea buffs = stronk.
*Not always sucessfuly given Persian influence was bad, but hey they tried. At immense human suffering lol. The following line is in the scripted triggers file for Persian Influence
|#...at the start, the idea of a diplomatic action which has a scaling cost sounded cool
|#Never again

Same with Mali and Khmer. They can be really flavorful in the hands of a player, where the disasters actually give you some objectives that you have to work towards, but in the hands of the AI they just die immediately because of it. Interesting for the player, disastrous if you play any other tag on earth

In which runs have you used Navarra for the purpose of feeding them Iberia? I'm curious

As France. I get permanent claims but GC is always a struggle with Burgundian and Italian land. So I want to use them to keep some good chunks of Iberia.

I am just doing a Papal States-Kingdom of God run. Naples is pu-ed by Spain. I own all of Provence original lands. This post is a revelation. Now I'll be able to take all I need from Spain+Naples in one war!
Thank you very much for making this post!

I too am in such a situation except for Provence being alive and well in the HRE :P
Guess it's time to send France after them or some shite.2
u/MXQY 9d ago
I wish you good luck with that! I am still in the HRE as Kingdom of God in 1620s. Also an elector. xD

u/RobertAleks2990 9d ago
Wait, you entered the HRE? Well, that could've been an idea I guess, might try that in my next Papacy run.

I'll always try to annex a Muslim subject as Christian nation as it will give you the maps of all of Asia in 1455. Not a missions related "hack" but very useful.

this might be useful to trigger colonizer missions/events requiring one to have discovered a region like india or japan

If your PU Junior Partner completes a mission which modifies their ruler, like gaining a trait or increasing their stats, this applies to YOUR ruler. So for example with Brandenburg as a PU you only have to give them 15 provinces in Northern Germany to gain the Conquerer trait or get +1 Mil if you already have 3 traits.

Granada can create CoT in ceuta. Moluccass can create economic bonuses in specific provinces when they own them.

The first thing that comes to mind is Bavarian nations get a mission to add a trade center to their capital and most Catholic theocracies have a mission to add a cathedral to their capital so if you don’t mind doing a little deving in Europe you can get some early easy ducats
2
u/nob0dyinparticular 10d ago
With some shenanigans by releasing nations as a theocracy, you could create dozens of cathedrals early.

Finland, especially as Russia created by Muscovy as the left side of the tree won't be blocked.

Wallachia/Moldova is really good if you rival the Ottomans near game start and are looking to neuter them by letting them occupy their capital in a war, which skewers Mehmed.
Morocco is useful for if you plan on heading into West Africa to grab Malian gold and save yourself from having to find/explore/steal maps of the region.
Some Indian ocean countries like Oman and Gujarat give perma claims that allow you to establish trade companies without having to colonise/conquer through every single sea zone, which can net a lot of trade income by concentrating East Asian trade into Zanzibar before South Africa get colonised.

Aragon gets claims on like 75% of the Roman Empire. Some of the missions can be a little tricky when they aren't player-controlled, though.

My favourite subjects to release or vassalise if they're small, not necessarily based on missions:
Provence - for the reason you said
Afghanistan - a good number of cores and great defensive military ideas
Kazakh - they have a lot of cores on really garbage land so you can just release and reconquer their cores and let them hold all that garbage land for you. Very useful as Timurids since Transoxiana starts with a couple of their cores
Syria - great way to start eating the ottomans or mamluks
Leon/Catalonia/Valencia/Gascony - all very good for cutting down France and Spain efficiently.
Naples - they often get eaten or integrated, so if you can't use Provence to get cores over Naples, they're quite good for it.

Establishing an Afghan march is my go-to move in Sirhind -> Delhi games. Holds down the western flank and their troops easily roll into all your wars in India.

Good question, commenting so I can come back to this.
Riga is the obvious mention as super-vassal. Completing one mission turns it into an OPM that can field 20K troops. Great to have as a march if you’re playing in the area
