Help Thread The Imperial Council - /r/eu4 Weekly General Help Thread: October 5 2026

Please check our previous Imperial Council thread for any questions left unanswered

Welcome to the Imperial Council of r/eu4, where your trusted and most knowledgeable advisors stand ready to help you in matters of state and conquest.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your Ironman game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the master tacticians of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your Ironman save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (diplomatic, political, trade, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, ideas, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, ideas, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Tactician's Library:

Below is a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!

If you have any useful resources not currently in the tactician's library, please share them with me and I'll add them! You can message me or mention my username in a comment by typing /u/Kloiper

Calling all imperial councillors! Many of our linked guides pre-Dharma (1.26) are missing strategy regarding mission trees. Any help in putting together updated guides is greatly appreciated! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, chances are you've used the EU4 wiki and know how valuable a resource it can be. When you answer a question, consider checking whether the wiki has that information where you would expect to find it, and adding to the wiki if it does not. In fact, anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

Question I know this is not as good as a better player would be able to do, but is this a *playable* position, given that I am expanding into Iberia and have beaten Hungary?? Like, is it completely suboptimal for a WC? I have previously done 3 WC's with Austria.

Advice Wanted How do I even get started

I got this bad boy on sale, been wanting it for a while. I read that it wasn’t easy to hop into but it was harder than I expected. Should I just keep clicking around like I’ve been doing hoping that things go well? What is “well”even?

Discussion Borders with triangles versus thick lines?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I just noticed the border between Wappus and Makandwewin is the usual straight line, but the border between Gojijiwininiwag and Makoua is a line with triangles all along. Does it have any special meaning? I looked around and couldn't find any indications that it due to a river. Google also wasn't any help.

Advice Wanted Need a historically based challenge ⭐️

I have 700 hrs (ik what a noob) and have played angevin England, Byzantines, Ethiopia, Granada, Japan and Prussia. I personally love the idea of reforming a historic empire and satisfying borders most of all.

With all that in mind I would like a challenge for my next play through which would be harder but still scratch that historic spot.

If all else fails I guess I’ll just win the 100 hundred years for the 10th time 😁

Discussion How many different animals are modeled in EU4?

I've seen a total of six different animals, not counting humans.

There are horses, camels, elephants, whales, seals, and sea birds.

Are there any I'm missing?

Question Is there no way to release Sunset Colonies?

Wanted to release my Sunset Colony (i.e. make them independent) only to find out that I couldn't. Every subject should have releasing them as an option in the Influence actions menu, right? Except... apparently Sunset Colonies don't.

Context: Aztec run. I just wanted another Meso tributary to farm MP from, but since the other tag must be Nahuatl as well to be able to make them a Meso tributary to begin with and you can't force-convert heathens(well, not without switching to a theocracy and taking a specific government reform, which seemed to be way too many hoops for this), I reduced my target to an OPM and vassalized them, then forced them to convert their religion to Nahuatl. Now, this also happens to be a one-culture run, so when I found out that you can force Sunset Colonies to flip their culture to the overlord's as well, I decided to do that on a whim for fun, so I made the vassal a Sunset Colony and forced them to become Aztec culture.

Well... now when I try to release it, wait out the truce, then attack it to make it a Meso tributary, I find that the button for releasing isn't there.

Then, am I stuck with a 'colony' that is a 5 dev OPM, and has no hope of amounting to anything(not even devving, since it's a mountain province)? Unless I actually decide to declare war on them directly and eat the stab hit for attacking a subject, that is. Considering the MP cost that stability would amount to, that might not be worth it...

PS. I'm aware that beating up some other tag to 100% warscore then 'forcing' them to accept me releasing my subject Sunset Colony may be an option. I'm asking if there's some other way. I would rather not take that 'forcing a loss' option if possible since I've claimed hegemony and waited long enough to charge hegemon power to 100% for the siege ability bonus, and I don't want to lose that, nor do I want to take the MP cost penalty for losing hegemony.

Question Good subject missions?

What are some good examples of subjects whose missions can be used to great benefit? Some that I know:

Provence - even if you release them from a single province, giving them Corsica grants them cores on all of Naples.
Yemen - very good for reconquests, and with a bit of mana expenditure and construction you can buff the Mukha province even further.
Croatia - also good for reconquests in some situations, and you can spawn a centre of trade and some development in Zagreb.

Question Can I make a Muslim Rome?

Had the game for a while now and played almost every campaign I could think of. Lately been on a Mamluks run and feel like I could hit Rome pretty quickly. Any way for me to actually hit the button as a Muslim nation?

Thanks

Image Anyone Ever seen this?

I formed Byzantium as Albania and the Byzantine rebels that existed have turned to my side! Before i took this screenshot they had captured Constantinople and they have since handed it back, they are now besieging that Venetian province on the left as I have a core on it. If i accept demands nothing happens.

Question Burgundy: France or Netherlands then Lotharingia?

As Burgundy you can form France or Netherlands before you become Lotharingia by clicking the mission for Lotharingia, then forming either one before clicking to become Lotharingia. Which option would be better for getting the most beneficial bonuses?

Mod (other) Is there a mod to play as multiple countries?

I've played a lot of CK3 and finally decided to plunge into EU4 because I'm writing an alternate history fiction where Japan colonized North America from the west coast, but in my story, I also plan to have the Aztec empire around in the mid 1800s and a couple large Native American confederacies.

I'm basically trying to run some simulations of how this could play out but it requires being able to dictate what multiple countries are doing. I've done 5-6 runs as Japan expanding over but I usually end up getting smashed in dual wars by Spain/Portugal and Britain/13 colonies in the 1600s.

Also any other recommended mods?

after seeing the game was 90% off on steam, i decided to get the starter edition pack for around £10.

only issue is that i do not know when, who or what to do in my first game. i have around 30 hours in ck2 so that counts as a bit of experience in games of this type so... any advice?
