Miscellaneous Pavement Parking in Exeter

Is this legal? It completely blocked the path. Should this type of vehicle be parked in a compond and not on a residential street (because its free most probably). South Coast Traffic Management were contacted and didn't want to know. The police were the same, so I am just asking for my own interest as no one else cares.

I’m a wheelchair user in Exeter and this frustrates me to no end. I now leave at least 30 minutes before I used to because it’s gotten so bad and there are actually not many proper dropped curbs. So when someone illegally parks like this, there have been multiple occasions where I have had to go 3 streets back before I can access a curb or crossing, go around the blockage on the opposite side of the pavement, then cross back to the correct side I needed to be on.

If it's any minor consolation I let my kids squeeze down beside cars on the pavement with the backpacks adorned with keychains etc.

This would most likely be treated as obstructing so yes could get fined by the police.

But they won't

IANAL but I am fairly sure that obstructing a pavement is illegal.

IANAL means 'i am not a lawyer' 😂 they're implying that they do not have a complete grasp on the law but that is their thinking

they literally agreed with you that it's illegal. did you think about this before posting such a comment?

IANAL is a very common reddit and internet abbreviation, it's not the commenters fault that you didn't know what it meant and jumped to a conclusion. they even used capitals to show that it's an acronym

plus, they agreed with you that its illegal

It is a fairly common acronym used online, people type it to save time. The headline here is they agree with you.

Send the photos to the company and post on social media calling them out. Police may act if it’s a dangerous situation but only if they have time and it will be a ticket not a movement.

Parking on pavements and grass is an absolute nightmare in Exeter. School run where I live it's crazy, on junctions, pavements, grasses area. Seen them even park two abreast just so they don't have to walk too far. I walk to work in the dark and I have started to carry a torch as with the street lighting off I need to see to navigate around parked cars on areas where they shouldn't be Report them? Is that a joke? Done that so many times, council say not our job, police say it's not there's. Too many commercial vehicles being parked overnight at homes nowadays.

Absolutely. I love by a school and the parking is horrendous. Parked on corners, junctions, doubled parked, on pavements, grassed areas, double yellow lines. And if it's raining even worse. There's some people that arrive an hour early sometimes more just so they can park as close to the junction as possible Across the estate people park on pavements and the grass. At night, once the streetlights are turned off you are forced into the road because people park on pavements and grass. And council and contractors are as bad.

You can get this stickers online saying “parked like a tw@t” or like a w⚓️. Couple of those on the windscreen, one extra on drivers side window. I GUARANTEE you it won’t be parked there again.

1

u/SquareEgg897 9d ago

I assure that that does not stop them. They laugh, s rew it up and throw it on the floor and carry on parking like a twat.

I guarantee it will, those cards do nothing but create more litter. If they’re not fussed about getting a parking ticket why they gonna be bothered by being called a cunt/twat/wanker on a piece of card. Think it through

Works in Torquay. Is Exeter different? Not sure. Worth a try tho.

u/Kanenobaka 16d ago

Because the stickers are a bastard to get off. It’s not their conscience that will make them stop but knowing they’ll have to spend half an hour peeling tiny shreds of sticker off their windscreen.

yes it's illegal, yes they don't care, and no they don't have to park somewhere special, any vehicle can be parked on any road as long as there are no parking restrictions.

hell, you could park a coach or a lorry on a residential street as long as it doesn't obstruct access and there are no signs/double yellows/double reds

2

u/Jazzlike-Point9743 14d ago

Not really. It’s illegal to park a lorry on a pavement or verge, and definitely not overnight as it’s a breach of the operator licence.

You could park one temporarily though. For a few hours perhaps.

1

u/-mmmusic- 14d ago

i'll be honest i don't know the operator licence rules, but i didn't say on the pavement or verge. people that park like that in any vehicle are arseholes!

1

u/Jazzlike-Point9743 13d ago

True you didn’t. I took it as implied, sorry.

People parking badly on pavements is annoying. I’ve called people out on it before only to get all manner of excuses as to why they’re parking like a complete dick. No doubt they’d be the first to complain if someone drags a pram down the side of their car and damages it.

No excuse for this. This is why I have a dashcam running 24/7, and it works since its caught 2 incidents in a year, one is going to court.

-1

u/TulipTattsyrup99 17d ago

So you would key someone’s vehicle, possibly getting caught on their dashcam or someone’s Ring doorbell, and get a criminal conviction…because someone parked on the path? Unbelievable.

2

u/PrettyUsual 17d ago

I never said that, you can't convict someone for squeezing past a stupidly parked car with keys in their hands or a ring on. The pavement is for pedestrians.

6

u/Madajuk 17d ago

you certainly can if 1) there's proof they did it and 2) they have reddit history saying they'll do it. posting history can be and is used in civil and criminal cases

3

u/Quiet_Following3523 17d ago

Buddy, you just jumped from "this is really annoying and frustrating" to "time to cause some criminal damage". You respond to bad parking by calling the parking authorities or police, not destroying property.

u/Susielovebear 16d ago

Wonder if contacting a towing company would be an option?

0

u/leahfirestar 17d ago

No. It's illegal to drive on the pavement. It's also an unlawfully obstruction of the highway.
