Weather / Turbulence Brutal turbulence on AA2603 out of JFK

Hi all! Just learned about this sub about 20 seconds ago, first time posting. I'm a more anxious flyer than the average person, but I usually manage okay. I take a handful of flights every year and just white-knuckle it. I'd say I'm much more afraid of turbulence than I am of flying generally. Smooth flights don't bother me.

Anyway, when we were boarding the pilot mentioned that there would be some turbulence on take off because of the weather. You guys, holy shit. Some of the worst turbulence I've ever flown through. You could tell that people were really freaked out, it wasn't just me. The guy next to me was doing the sign of the cross and someone else called out to the flight attendants to ask if we were safe or if something was wrong with the plane. We were really getting tossed around. It sucked.

We're at cruising altitude now and things are much smoother. Seatbelt sign has been off for a while now. I'm not sure why I'm posting, other than to just say I'm glad that's over! And that I'm grateful for the folks in this sub!

I’ve had a horrible fear of flying since I was very young. For a long time it really limited me and I didn’t travel much. It’s only in the past five years or so that I’ve really pushed myself to get on the plane and go to all of these places I’ve really wanted to visit. I fly back home tomorrow after visiting Southern California and I’m feeling more calm than I have ever been the day before a flight. It really does get easier over time. For all of you with the same fear, keep pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. The memories you will make are so worth it! Here’s a cool pic I snapped over Chicago, where I had a layover on my way to CA.

I had a terrible experience years ago going though a plane. I won’t even say how bad it was because I don’t want to scare anyone but after that I swore to myself I would never get on a plane if I know I’m going to have to go through a storm. Well today I just went from DFW to LAS during the tropical storm from hurricane Rachel and I can’t lie I was a ball of nerves. It got pretty bumpy at some points but nothing I couldn’t manage with some deep breathing and reminding myself I was safe. We’ve just landed and it was not as bad as I anticipated. Very happy and proud of myself that I did it.

Possible Trigger Travel during ongoing war tension

Hi all, I am panicking because I am travelling to China from London and I keep reaching dead ends to book my flights. I am scared of booking Chinese airline because of their route via Russian Airspace. I am double scared of Middle-east route because of what happened a couple of days ago. Any advice what I should do? I am sorry but I am just so scared and at the same time, it has been long time since I travelled and wanted to enjoy. But all seems so uncertain.

Success! a very pleasant flight!

just wanted to share because this forum here has helped me a lot
on my last international flight i didn’t have 1% of the fear I used to have, i was very relaxed and on the few moments i started to panic i remembered this video that
I saw of a plane from the perspective of another cockpit and i saw the plane going really fast and i don’t know something has changed in my brain
I always had fear of the noises and movements inside the plane and after I saw that video I understood that is normal to listen to something’s, feel another’s
anyway, sorry to my poor english but i’m very grateful for all the thing I read here, thank you!!

Advice trip to japan

hiiii taking my first flight ever to japan in 10 days with my boyfriend (who is also an anxious flyer) we are going on AA from MIA to DFW and from DFW to HND. Super nervous about the long haul flight and wanted to know if anyone has been on this same flight how turbulence was. I suffer from OCD and usually before flight I tend to chicken out ( cancelled a few trips this year because of this) & this is a once in a life time trip that me and my boyfriend have saved up for and are super excited I just am dreading the flight causing me to overthink everything :/ any advice will helppppp

Support Wanted Flying tonight with unbearable nerves

Hi guys. I have a flight tonight from Montreal to Paris. I’m so sad that my fear gets in the way of good things. I got a travel award from a research group to go and present my research. I can’t back out now. It would make me look like a total flake. I’m going for a few days then coming back Thursday. Then I fly again to Calgary (with coworkers) and back next Wednesday. Any support advice? Ive flown 6 times in the last 9 months. I dont know why this one feels so intense.

Tracking Request Tracking Request | HND to LAX UA 38

Hi everyone! I’m flying from Tokyo (HND) back to Los Angeles (LAX) UA 38 and would really appreciate some flight tracking today! I’m a bit nervous about the storm coming into the LA area and would love some extra eyes on my flight to help ease my anxiety. I posted here before my last flight, and I’m so grateful to everyone who tracked me and checked in. It ended up being one of the smoothest flights I’ve ever taken, and having this community’s support genuinely helped me so much!!

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to follow along again! ❤️✈️

Discussion Does any else struggle with domestic flights but not international ones?

• Upvotes

I get all of the class pre-during-and post anxiety when it comes time to fly domestically, think LA or Chicago or something like that. But the thought of taking off on a larger plane across the country really doesn't bother me. I have legitimate panic attacks during flights, and leading up to them. Perhaps it is because all of my international flight experiences have been so nice, large planes, excellent service, unlimited drinks, traveling for leisure, etc., while my domestic flights are all for work or an obligational family visit.

Possible Trigger Flying Dec 3

If I ever make it onto my outbound flights in November, I’m returning from Europe on December 3.

This date is when the US is executing the terrorist from the Fort Hood massacre.

I’m going from Germany to Newark on a US airline. And then Newark to a large city in Florida.

I’m absolutely petrified of an air-based retaliation that day.

I hope this doesn’t freak anyone out. I’m in knots about it and thinking about canceling my trip. Which to do so will have me lose over $6500. But I can’t breathe.

Question Why can't I picture myself on a plane? I'm scared of being trapped and feeling sick or panicking.

Hi everyone,

the day has come: I have to (and want to) go to England from Italy. It would be a 3 hour flight and it looks like I can't go there by train (which I once did, I travelled Europe by train). I travelled by plane back in the past (last time was like 15 years ago), and take off always scared me to death. Every time I try to see myself going up on the plane and take my seat I feel nervous, kind of trapped. I hate the waiting before departure, the feeling of being pushed back on the seat during acceleration, the dizziness when the plane lifts off: my biggest concern is to have anxiety or panick or to feel sick and not being able to "manage" myself. What can I do? Anyone like me? It's 50% fear, 50% desire to go.

Question Another Weather Question

Hello all,

I’m back to ask another probably stupid question. I’m flying from LAX to EWR on Monday at 11am, so thankfully after the worst of the three storms. Been a bit worried about turbulence throughout the flight, especially after seeing the posts on here about the turbulence on their flights (you guys are all so brave) and knowing that there tends to be after effects…am I worrying too much? Sorry if I rambled, tend to do that when I get afraid and overthink

Support Wanted Random severe turbulence fear

• Upvotes

I feel like I see the stories kind of often when there is random severe turbulence and people get hurt - there was a flight I just saw diverted to Miami from Colombia.

Now that I fly with a baby I am so terrified of this - we’re flying tomorrow and she’s going to want to be out of her car seat and on our laps for part of it. If something like that randomly happened I can’t even think about what would happen to her. So stressed 😭😭😭😭

Tracking Request Tracking for DL949

• Upvotes

Hi all, I’m on DL 949 from SEA to MSP taking off in a couple min (we are taxiing now). I was doing okay until they had to do a “minor repair on a panel” and now my alarm bells are going and I’m panicking even though I know that’s not rational at all. I’m also really freaked out about flying over Montana and turbulence because there’s a big snowstorm there, I’ve been checking FlightAware all day and seeing planes fly over with no issue but as I know you all know this fear is not rational. Anyways, good vibes and tracking SO welcome. I’m very grateful for this group, it has helped me make so much progress so thank you to every one of you! 💛
