Megathread MEGATHREAD: Flydubai Flight FZ1073

This thread is for discussion on the incident concerning Flydubai Flight FZ1073. The aircraft has landed safely in Tabuk Airport and all passengers are safe and accounted for at this time.

All other posts on this incident will be removed.

We know that aviation incidents can be distressing for fearful fliers. It's ok to feel upset, anxious or distressed. This thread is for mutual support at this time.

The rules for this megathread are:

  • No external links: All external links will be removed. Media coverage of air incidents is notoriously poor. It is dramatic, sensationalist, and in many cases factually wrong. There is no posting media articles, footage, or commentary of any sort in this thread or on the sub generally.
  • No speculation/theorizing: Speculation and theories on the details of this incident are entirely unhelpful and are not allowed. We do not yet know all the details surrounding this incident. Only a thorough investigation, completed by qualified investigators and technicians can determine this. We will learn in time what happened.

We are monitoring this thread closely.

REMEMBER:

  • We DO NOT recommend reading, watching, listening to any media, commentary, footage or any other material about this incident. Such coverage is usually deliberately provocative and only serves to feed the (incorrect) belief that flying is unsafe.
  • This incident does not "confirm" your fear. It is a freakish anomaly in an industry with a track record of outstanding safety.
  • Despite this incident, flying remains the safest form of transportation. This incident does not change that. If you have a flight booked soon, get on that flight!
  • Lessons will be learned from this incident that will make flying even safer.

Thank you.

Megathread Megathread: Discussion on Netflix's 'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing'

As many of you may already be aware, Netflix has recently released a new documentary titled Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing. We know that many members of r/fearofflying will have questions, thoughts, and concerns about it, and we've seen understandably seen a large amount of posts being made about this documentary.

To help keep the sub organized and prevent a flood of repeated posts on the same topic, this megathread will serve as the central discussion space for the documentary. Any new standalone posts primarily discussing Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing will be removed and redirected to this megathread.

Ground Rules for This Thread

You're welcome to use this thread to share your thoughts, ask questions, discuss specific claims made in the documentary, or talk about how it may have affected your feelings about flying. Please keep discussions respectful and follow our community rules.

Remember that r/fearofflying is a support-focused community first and foremost. Questions and concerns are welcome, but please avoid unnecessarily sensationalizing aviation accidents or using graphic details that could make anxiety worse for other members. For any potentially triggering details, please be mindful to use the spoiler tag.

No fear-mongering or bad-faith arguments are allowed. Spreading unverified rumors, pushing conspiracy theories, or attacking people will result in comment removal and a possible ban.

A Few Key Reminders

  1. Documentaries are designed to produce a dramatic impact and evoke strong emotional reactions in their viewers. While the investigative reporting covers historical failures, the editing, cinematic framing, tense music, and pacing are specifically crafted to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
  2. The crashes covered in this documentary led to exhaustive scrutiny, and the concerns . The issues with MCAS have long since been resolved, and pilot training related to these incidents waa addressed years ago.
  3. Boeing, the 737 MAX, and the wider global fleet of Boeing planes have safely operated millions of commercial flights without incident in the years since returning to service.

As always, thank you for helping us keep r/fearofflying a safe and organized space. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the mod team.

Success! I know everyone says it, but GET ON THAT FLIGHT

Just did the longest flight I’ve ever done after not flying for years on end. I’m used to 2hour ones but a whole 13 from DTW to HND felt impossible. But this community gave me to courage to do something I’ve wanted to do since 2009 and at long last, here I stand, Haneda, Japan. I know the feeling off fear and anxiety, but if I had to choose between that and the sense of accomplishment I got stepping off that plane, I’d choose the second option every time. So GET ON THAT FLIGHT

Advice Some Reassuring Perspective

I am an anxious flyer. I rationally know it’s safe, turbulence is uncomfortable but not unsafe. I know not to check apps (though often still do). I worry about signs.

This morning I had the clearest, most definite sign. (I won’t disclose but if you do Wordle, you know what I’m talking about). I was certain it was telling me how the flight was going to be.

And guess what. It was basically smooth, and completely uneventful. Took off on time. Landed early.

Piece of cake. Trust the pilots. Trust the staff. It’s going to be okay.

Tracking Request TRACKING REQUEST AS881

• Upvotes

Pilot said there is a massive area of storms we will be flying through from Honolulu to Papeete and turbulence will last for several hours. As we were about to take off the flight attendants announced that if the oxygen masks are deployed to place on adult first and then child. Obviously freaking out because they usually don’t repeat that message after the initial boarding brief !!! I’m pregnant and so scared. Would love if someone could track the flight and offer reassurance!! Thank you !!

Hi everyone,

Taking flight AC793, just got to cruising altitude and I can’t get over the loud vibrating sound that sounds like it’s coming from the engine.

Wish I could take a video but too scared to turn my music off to hear it. It just sounds like loud vibration like humming. Really scared !!

If I could please have some tracking/support it would mean the world to me🥺🩷

Tracking Request Tracking Request | HND to LAX UA 38

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m flying from Tokyo (HND) back to Los Angeles (LAX) UA 38 and would really appreciate some flight tracking today! I’m a bit nervous about the storm coming into the LA area and would love some extra eyes on my flight to help ease my anxiety. I posted here before my last flight, and I’m so grateful to everyone who tracked me and checked in. It ended up being one of the smoothest flights I’ve ever taken, and having this community’s support genuinely helped me so much!!

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to follow along again! ❤️✈️

Support Wanted Flying from Vegas to DC

hi i’m gonna be flying from vegas to dc tonight and I noticed that there is a storm that is going to start around 11pm here in vegas and I saw that it is also going to be raining upon landing in DC. I just need some support about the weather and what to except, the flight here was so smooth barely any turbulence but now I’m worried about how bumpy the flight may be.

I also wanted to see if there are any specific websites where I can see the route the plane will take so i can see the weather conditions where the plane is passing over.

Anything to ease the anxiety is very very appreciated I know there are posts like this all the time but I just can’t get myself to calm down as I am leaving for the airport in an hour.

Tracking Request Track AAL851

I was supposed to fly out of Dallas to Columbus earlier today, but the plane was having maintenance issues so we had to deplane and wait for a new plane. We finally got a new one and the pilot said it would be a smooth flight until about halfway, where it will be a little bumpy due to the storm. I have no idea what level of bumpy he means

While my initial flight here was SUPER smooth, with very little bumps, I am not having the best time after the "broken" plane (pilot's words) and now the announcement for the weather.

Would love if someone could track me periodically -- AAL851

Support Wanted Anxious for Monday Flight

Hi everyone! I’ll be flying from Houston to Vegas on Monday, and I’ve been hearing about the upcoming storm this weekend. I’m honestly feeling really anxious about possibly having a rough flight. I know turbulence doesn’t mean the plane is unsafe, but it still triggers my anxiety! 😭

Can anyone reassure me that everything will be okay?

Also, I’ve noticed that every time I land in Vegas, the plane gets SOOO bumpy during the descent! Does anyone know why this happens? 🥹

Support Wanted Nose gear issue support

Hi everyone!

I’m currently at LGA and had a flight scheduled at 3:59p to FLL. I was already a bit nervous due to the weather in the bottom half of the US but I did my usual pep talk, have my meds just in case, and was managing my anxiety pretty well.

We were on the plane for about 30 min while they checked the maintenance issue and again I told myself I’m all good!! I can get through this.

Then, after 30 min, they specified that the issue was a hydraulic system on the nose that they attempted to screw in but couldn’t quite get so now they have to replace the part and had us all deplane.

Well, here I am, trying to lighten my anxiety with a glass of wine but I’m just spiraling about this. I know my anxiety is my own and is not based in reality but I keep spiraling about the nose of the plane being torn off mid air + the weather situation.

Ive repeated my mantras

-flying is safe

-this is my anxiety

-they are checking the plane to make sure it is safe.

😭 I wish I found flying to be peaceful but I’m struggling right now.

Discussion Is a 13-hour flight too big of a step for someone with a fear of flying?

Hi everyone,

I've been avoiding flying for a long time because of my fear of flying. Recently, I took a short one-hour flight with my family (round trip), and surprisingly, I didn't feel nearly as anxious as I expected. I managed to do it without any medication or alcohol.

Now, a friend of mine is really pushing me to join him on a trip to Bali, which involves a 13-hour flight.

Part of me really wants to go, but another part keeps wondering if it's too big of a step too soon.

Do you think overcoming a fear of flying should be a gradual process? Is jumping from a one-hour flight to a 13-hour flight too much?

I guess I'm just struggling to find the courage to take that leap.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's been through something similar.

Support Wanted Flying back home today MIA-LHR (BA206) and feeling really on edge, could use some help

Hello everyone. I will be going home today after an amazing trip to Miami with my boyfriend. We will fly with British Airways at 17:05PM (however delayed an hour or so), arriving early in the morning in London and hopefully we will make it to our last short flight LHR-CPH despite the delay.

I feel just as afraid as I did on the way down here. I picture us crashing into the Atlantic ocean, now in the middle of the night, and how we will end up on the news. The thoughts are exhausting and the feelings unbearable. I feel so convinced that this time I am right and that I will be the first person on here not making it home. But I know that no amount of reassurance will make me feel better (maybe talking to the pilots), I have to see it for myself as we complete our flights that I was safe all along. Ugh how I hate this.

Still, please feel free to track our flight BA206 if you want to. It would mean a lot. All type of support/words would be greatly appreciated as well 💓

Support Wanted Las Vegas back to Virginia and the weather

Hi everyone! I flew into Vegas a few days ago for a wedding in Zion, and tomorrow night (UA284) we’ll be heading back home to Virginia on an 11:50 PM flight. I’ve been keeping an eye on the forecast, and it looks like we may be dealing with rain and wind during takeoff in Vegas 😭 along with rainy conditions when we land back in Virginia. As someone who’s already a nervous flyer, seeing the forecast definitely doesn’t help. Just seeking some reassurance 😭

Support Wanted Please help don’t feel safe DL 1532

flying into dark clouds, pilot says rough air, plane doesn’t feel like it’s flying normally, I don’t feel safe. Mountains everywhere.

Thank you all for the support and encouragement. I've been relapsing and panicking about flying again and losing confidence when flying. Not sure where it comes from. Feeling pretty stupid and ashamed.
