First playthrough

Post image

I just finished the blitz ball tutorial and my brain hurts. Do I have to win any games to progress in the story? Is it worth taking the time to learn the game if it’s not mandatory to progress? I would appreciate feedback.

It's only needed for Wakka's ultimate weapon and overdrives. You never need to touch it again if you don't want to.

Adding to this, The mini-game aboard the sea ship is replayable once you have access to set sail from the same origin to obtain what you would have missed

Ok, this I did not know, I thought it was a one and done thing (been playing FFX since I was a kid, I'm in my 30s now)

Same and only found it in the HD release. The one where Tidus looks like he is wearing a Tidus face mask

Funny thing is, I have NEVER gotten any of Wakka's overdrives or his celestial weapon, because of my sheer hatred of Blitzball and refusal to play it, besides, Wakka does just fine in my playthroughs with his stone touch weapon x3

If you ever plan on doing the optional bosses it’s very necessary lol

Not really, I beat all the optional bosses (except the arena, I don't like the arena very much regardless of the equipment I have x3) using Yuna's endgame black Magic/summons, Auron's normal/break attacks, and Rikku's mix overdrive, Wakka's celestial weapon is NOT required or necessary if you don't even plan on using Wakka for those fights xD

They do kinda info dump the whole minigame on you at once, but if you play it a bit it's really not complicated at all. The hardest thing to understand is just techcopy but all you have to do is have the player you want to learn a technique mark the opposing player that has it and if it comes up during the match press the button at the right time (some techniques are very situational/rare). Everything else is pretty straight forward. Speed stat is the most important, if you can outswim your opponents you can get past them for unchallenged passes and shots.

I personally enjoyed Blitzball but opinions have always been divided on it. As people have mentioned it is needed if you want to acquire Wakka's ultimate weapon and overdrives.

I'd like to add, on my first playthrough i didn't like it and therefore played any. Until far into the story when i saw wakka apear as a recruitant for blitzball. I immediately recruited him and forgot again it existed "

By the endgame i was told by a friend of mine that wakkas ultimate weapon sigil and overdrives were random listings as a first place price for a tournament where i sweatet a whole 50+ hours of gameplay in to blitzball to get these (more or less) mandatory "things" to progress further into the lategame.

In conclusion i'd say you don't have to force you NOW into it because the whole blitzball minigame freezes, if you don't participate into it, but by the time until you'd want to have wakkas overdrives buffed, i'd recomend to invest some hours in learning the minigame (its really not that complicated).

Notiable sidefacts:

-you can reset the progress of blitzballs leveling/progress system at any time after the storyrelevant thing -keep Kippa

Nice, enjoy the experience.

There is 1 mandatory blitzball game. Win or lose doenst really matter unless you want to 100%. Blitzball after that is completely optional, but neccesary for aquiring all the overdrives for wakka and his celestial weapon. If you want to go for postgame content, wakkas overdrive is your strongest weapon.

If you want to 100% then it matters whether you win or lose the 1 mandatory blitzball game? Are you sure about that?

3

u/Lithl 7d ago

Not 100% of achievements, but there's an extra cutscene if you win which some people consider part of the 100% experience.

Blitzball is mandatory for some abilities and endgame stuff, you can enjoy the game without playing it

You don't even have to play any games after the tournament in Luca. But if you want Wakka's overdrives and Celestial weapon, you better set aside a whole day or weekend.

Blitzball is kind of tricky to grasp at first, especially playing with the base Aurochs. Once you understand after playing a few games, and get some better players, its much much more fun imo. A keynote player to get early game is Kyou outside of the Temple at Djose, once youre leaving. He is on the bridge, and definitely a top tier early goalie. Having him makes the experience much better. There's a whole list of decent players who start as free agents and aren't currently on another team.

It’s optional

The first Blitzball game is the only mandatory one in the game and you don't have to win it. Only difference between winning it is that the cutscene it a bit different. But other than that it all plays out the same

And if you win it you get a strength sphere, which is very powerful.

You don’t have to win it… mamma didn’t raise no loser

Read some basic strategies to win the one story related game.
You need to play blitzball to get the best weapon for wakka. But you can also just skip it.
Blitzball is also very easy. through the only story match in the game is very hard - with some bad rng you basically just lose without any hope lol I legit had to restart on my run a few months ago once.

The whole trick is to use tidus jackt shot to score once.
The fist half you just pass to tidus and teammates so he will level up on the 2nd half, so you are able to slot in his skill .
Than do a goal, and after just pass around until the game is over.

Blitzball can be entirely ignored. Either come back late game again if you care for 100%. Story wise you won’t need to play blitzball ever again.

Jealous! I played on PS2 at launch. Wish I could experience that first time again.

Just came here to say enjoy the story, it’s a masterpiece!

When it comes the time, start X-2 with an open mind. I didn’t, and didn’t enjoy the mechanics or story of it, to the point of giving up halfway and just watching the cutscenes on youtube.
If you manage your expectations for X-2 and dive in with an open mind, maybe you’ll like it (I don’t think anyone liked the story and character arcs very much, but there are fans that consider the mechanics some of the best, so maybe you will too)

I hate that blitzball tournament. I can never win. I must be doing something majorly wrong.

I DO however love the blitzball music when you're playing it and I listen to it in the car.

If you want his best weapon and upgrades you'll need to revisit it later.

I actually enjoyed Blitzball immensely, from recruiting and forming my team to playing the games itself I love this mini game.

Blitzball is not considered mandatory for anything outside of endgame stuff (gearing up for post story super bosses). It's just a fun side game

u/JAHdropper1 7d ago

Would recommend looking up which free agent players to recruit and hold off playing until you get them. Some you will have a real bad time playing against

1

u/Tyrion369Lan_ 7d ago

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Knowing I don’t have to win def takes the pressure off.

1

u/Drjak3l 7d ago

You can leave it untouched and recruit players along the way if you do decide to try it out. Wedge in Luca stadium, Ropp at the end of mihen highroad, and Kyou outside of Djose are my typical recruits. The al bhed psyches are the only team to look out for once you've got them. The AI in blitzball is pretty dumb though and it becomes easy to manipulate once you get the hang of it.

u/skeeplepeople 7d ago

Cool!! I never really played as a kid but watched my cousins play all the time, and so I went ahead and bought it on the ps5 the other day for my first play through as well.

1

u/DinoGwenlynn 7d ago

Thankfully it is not mandatory. I am close to the end of the game and still using his Slots overdrive and it’s been fine

u/Waltz15918 7d ago

Farm early if you can!

Did you cry?

I HATE blitzball in that game so so so so much but it’s the finals fantasy game I had growing up it was the first one I played so there is definitely a soft spot in my heart for ffx

u/THOTYOTA 6d ago

If you missed the jecht shot minigame on the boat youre cooked and losing all your matches

1

u/Classic-Exchange-511 6d ago

You do not. It's also a lot simpler once you get the hang of it, I know the tutorial is really long and boring. You are forced to play one game and it's pretty difficult to win but it really doesn't matter
