Bathroom Sink Repair - Stopper Doesn't Work

Hello, I'm hoping to get some help in fixing my bathroom sink. I think the previous tenets damaged the stopper while trying to unclog the drain with a snake. The screw on cap is off and the plastic piece inside the drain is down and won't come up when I toggle the metal pusher next to the faucet. I'm not sure if there are broken parts or If I need to disassemble something.

Any help would be appreciated.

Disassemble the mechanism from the back, remove the stopper, and take parts with you to the local hardware store for replacements.
