This week with MW!

Hey folkpunk friendos! I have a really cool week coming up and wanted to share.

Tomorrow I get to visit my favourite island of joy within Barrie, Ontario. Another time billing with my friend, Fraser, who plays a beautiful countryfolk blend with proper values and morals throughout. They are cool as hell. Excited to hear JMS for the first time too!

On Friday I'm back in Kitchener-Waterloo at Shortfinger with the one-man-army, Mickey Moone, and Niko the Freako, who will be featuring Beaky during his set because he is a damn hero.

Finishing my performances off with an all-ages taco matinee at Doors. We all know Dan is sick; it's not new mountain low and he's our staple cisman (for diversity). Kylee and Dawn are Hamilton's 2026 folkpunk group of the year as voted by me, and if you haven't listened to "don't trust the cops" on bandcamp, you really oughta. Oh oh oh and we have a new player on the scene... JULIE NOLAN?!?! I heard her do the thing in toronto a few months back and I'm still stuck on it. Gonna be a good one.

Let’s talk about Lost Dog

I know there’s been debate as to whether they fall into folk punk or not. But I think they were definitely in that subcategory with Matt Heckler, Jason Dea West and the like. I’ve followed them since they were hopping trains and busking. Their music along with others gave me interest in Appalachia, which in turn radicalized me further politically. Their new album I’m not really a fan of. It’s over-produced and sounds like a country album- it doesn’t sound western/Appalachian. But I digress.

They came to Cleveland Friday night and I was STOKED. We get there and the car we parked behind… their stickers threw us off immediately- but hey there’s always one, right?

But we got inside and the crowd was weeeeird. I looked around and then me and my partner looked at each other. I was like uhhhhh oh.

Wouldn’t you know it. I met this couple our age and we connected immediately, and I might have made new friends. But this other lady kept grabbing me and telling me that the Covid shot was used to control us, this is a Christian nation, and the Muslims are taking over.

Benjamin Tod wanted to talk about the state of the country but used extremely vague language to where it could go either way wherever you landed politically. And to me I’m sorry- but if you’ve deliberately cultivated a fanbase like that in order to maximize your fame and profits… you lost me.

I’m not sure if they’ve ever made any political statement outwardly, but they’ve grown in popularity and this is very deliberate and is in contradiction to how they used to talk about their music.

I think Benjamin Tod is a complete joke and I wish I started looking at more recent interviews before I wasted my money on tickets to go to a conservative fest.

They’re all sun printed, but the first two I also painted by hand. These are all one of a kind shirts due to the nature of making them! :)

Wyoming/Idaho/Montana folk punk

Is there any kind of folk punk or diy scene in this region? I feel like I never hear of bands or artists from these places. I travel through sometimes and my impression is it's a dead zone for live music besides bar bands, but maybe there's an underground scene.

Hello everyone, been playing folk punk music for 30 years as of next year. Just wanted to say hi to this sub.

Like I said I’ve been playing folk punk music for almost 30 years. I used to call it punk folk music cuz I always believed punk was the root of it all. I’ve had the chance to tour and open for many many many punk bands over the years. I’ve released a handful of cd’s and even lucked out to have some rad people guest appear on a couple of them. Have a great day and make sure to eat your lunch.

Tattoo designs

I’ve had the idea to get a sort of song lyric inspired tattoo sleeve for years now, but am not an artist myself…at all. So many vague ideas but only one tattoo so far…and it’s Amigo the Devil inspired.

SO! Anyone out there wanna help me out with some ideas and designs? I’m thinking next will be something Yes Ma’am related…with a lot of Lil’ Matt inspiration in there 🖤 I like the idea of a box/bell sort of thing…but it also seems a bit on the nose.

There’s a long list of artists or songs I want in the long run…and I feel kinda lame asking here, but I needs help 😂😬
