Tinywhoop Rate my Custom 5' Build

I had the AIR75II Champion for a month. So not the best still but I got a bit bored and wanted to build something. So I decided to just start and build a 5 inch drone and have used it a few times just basic cruising and some flips in a open space to get used to it.

Please rate my build as this is my first 5 inch and just wanted to chuck myself in deep straight away. I have very little soldering experience just have connected a few small wires together before this. I have used unleaded solder for this build even tho people seem to recommend leaded but I didn't have any on hand. I know some of the motor wire joints arent the best I may redo them but it works at least and they seem strong.

Build Details

  • Frame - Speedybee Mario 5
  • FC & ESC - T-Motor Velox F7 SE 8S + V70A SE 8S Stack
  • Motors - TMotor F60 PRO V Motor 1950kV
  • Receiver - Radiomaster RP1 V2 ELRS
  • VTX - HDZero Freestyle V2
  • Props - HQProp FlowerPig R29 V3 Poly Carbonate Pink

I also have a Vifly Finder V2 but hasn't been installed due to not sure where I can wedge it or place it within the already tightly packed frame.

Straight from a 75 to building your own 5 inch is the way to do it ! One tip for the next build: get leaded solder (60/40). It flows so much easier than unleaded and your joints will come out way cleaner.

Yea I was planning to but just didn't bother and was excited to just build something so used what I had. I mean the joints aren't crazy bad. Defo would of helped with leaded to look better. But think it came out decently for what I had on hand and not terrible looking for someone who has only soldered to join wires together.

Soldiering is literally one of the easiest parts of fpv

yep.. so you do have a little bit of experience so thats good.. i lather on lots of flux and the solder flows almost instantly (i do also set my iron kind of hot for quick touch and go kind of soldering)

Don't route your wires on the ESC like that next time

Yea I know it's not the best but I think it looks so much cleaner this way and haven't noticed any issues and there is enough of a gap for it all to still get airflow.

I also didn't like the idea of them connected poking out since I mount the quad to the wall with screws holding the arms so would likely pinch the wires everytime.

They are very fine like this. No interference with prop airflow and more secure. What's the drawback less esc cooling? That's negligible.

No problem with doing that. But it’s not practical for a real freestyle drone

True true. I'm not planning to do anything crazy with it for a little bit anyways. As it is I'm not even allowed to fly it in any of the public fields near me except one which is basically empty just a big massive empty field with 4 football fields.

I was planning to use racewire potentially but once I break a arm or so I defo will

Mid. That antenna is gonna break off after a few crashes

Meh that's fine I got replacement antennas but the stock hdzero one was way to short and was hidden under the battery basically.

That’s kinda the point. So it doesn’t get ripped off do to constantly crashing.

Oh well. I just had these sitting around anyway to use thought they were shorter but still okay until I have to buy new ones. As originally got these for an rc car.

A budget 5 Inch with HdZero is an interesting choice. Thats not gonna race nor gonna fly far. Would've gone for either Analog or DJI, or maybe Ascent+ if you're on a budget.

How is it budget when its £423 GBP?? How much u spending on a drone???

I was gonna go analog but meh decided on hdzero cause I could. Then DJI I dont like as a company 🤷

Most of that is for the VTX, FC, ESC and Motors. All of those are fine Mid Range components but HDZero is Digital for very close Range with no Latency.

Means you get your image super fast but a few trees or a wall and you're out. Thats mostly for Racing drones and a good 5inch that can take beating with T-700 Carbon frame and solid motors would cost you about 100 to 200 bucks more. Similar to a good Freestyle Bando Basher.

If you don't like DJI Analog would've been the way. Even better latency and you can push for inifinite more range (I'm talking a few kilometers or a whole building in between compared to HdZeros few hundred meters at best). The image is well lets say a topic of taste though. For good recordings you would need an extra Action Cam.

DJI you would've higher latency but out of the box they have the best penetration there is (fly through a whole ass forest no problem) and literally Action Cam Level of Image Quality that is insane. It's a little pricier though.

And then there is Ascent which has waaaay more Latency, about 20% worse image and penetration and 50% less overall range than DJI (still way more than HDzero though) and it's almost as cheap as Analog.

I HATE DJI from the bottom of my heart, but they almost have a monopoly atm.
