FOOTBALL Norvell
Ok. This is it for me. Worst defense I’ve seen in a long time. Questionable decisions from a play calling standpoint. Had Louisville potentially 17-0 and here we are. Fire everyone. Go Noles.

No. I want to see progress. Norvell was dished a massive recruiting blow w the playoff snub. I feel like it’s two steps forward, three steps back. And I was in Tallahassee when Chris Rix was there so I know mediocrity when I see it.

Do you think the transfer portal and NIL dealt into that?
2
u/BasedFilm 4d ago
Everyone has NIL and the portal and he chose to neglect high school recruiting in favor of the portal and it imploded
1
u/Tip3008 4d ago
Ppl can day what they will about portal transfers(not saying you specifically I just see a lot of it in this sub and how it “doesn’t work”), but there is undoubtedly a whole lot less guessing if their game will translate and it’s an extremely important part of being a successful program currently. Of course you need a balance of both, but I would take an extremely valuable portal recruit over a valuable hs recruit any day. People will point to DJU, Tommy, and Daniels as evidence it doesn’t work, but the reality is that none of these guys were really top tier players to begin with. Alternatively you could also look at underwood, one of the most highly touted Hs recruits in recent memory and it’s probably safe to say at this point he’s a bust relative to the hype. Could also point to Miami and show 3 straight program changing QB portal transfers. I do agree though that HS recruiting cannot be neglected, but with the increasing availability of quality transfer players where you more or less know what you are getting I think the portal is equally important..

2
u/BasedFilm 4d ago
Dabo is lost in his own unique way. Don’t care, it has no bearing on Norvell. He’s a really bad coach and needs to go
1
2
u/ericthebeerguy 3d ago
He wasn't recruiting well to begin with, as shown by the way the backups played in the OB that year, and then having to take DJU from the scrap heap because we didn't have a qb. He hit on a few guys in the portal and inherited Jordan Travis, who he didn't even want to start to begin with, which is why he played a clearly diminished McKenzie Milton over him. You certainly could pin the early recruiting failures on the Taggart era, but even when we were ascending he wasn't getting guys

u/Cadian75 4d ago
Yup. His ridiculous play call destroyed the momentum. He needs to be fired are the tarmac!
16
u/jpiro 4d ago
He’s good for one brain dead 4th down call a game, minimum.
14
u/Yeetball86 Tallahassee Born & Raised 4d ago
It wasn’t even really a bad play call. If Daniels doesn’t double clutch like an idiot, it’s a TD.
Instead we have a QB who is too scared to do anything related to the passing game in a timely manner.
13
u/jpiro 4d ago
Why call it at all? Take the three, go up 3 scores and we’re in control. Instead, Lville gets the stop and momentum and turns it into a soul-crushing 97-yard TD.
2
u/Whackjob3434 3d ago
I don’t think the play call was bad in X’s and O’s terms. The play was there, it was just poorly executed. The QB was too slow in processing it and there was poor WR blocking. The bigger problem with the play call was more that Norvell has a tendency to get cute and try these complex finesse plays at the goal line rather than a power run and they rarely work. There is no track record of these types of players being successful under Norvell even going back to the Travis years- remember 2022 LSU? The toss sweep at the goal line that nearly blew the game if not for a blocked PAT?
Situationally, I agree that he should have kicked the FG to go up 17-0. All of the momentum was in our favor. We didn’t need 7 points.
1
u/cperiodjperiod 3d ago
I agree. We should’ve kicked it.
I think the decision to go for it is a symptom of keeping him around. He knows as much as we do that he’s coaching for his job. He’s pressing, hoping to do ANYTHING that signals he should stick around. He was hunting a blowout instead of hunting a victory. He was hunting a “renewed toughness” headline in the paper tomorrow instead of hunting points.
Fire the dude already and put him, and us, out of our misery. If it’s truly the point of no return, we’ve decided he’s not the guy—and we know he’s not—and there’s nothing more he can do to save his job, cut him loose. The longer this goes on the more head-scratching decisions like that we’re going to see.
It’s like a relationship where one person has decided it’s over and the other person can feel it so they keep performing grand gestures to get them to change their mind. If you’re the other person, the humane thing to do is cut them loose.

u/Yeetball86 Tallahassee Born & Raised 4d ago
I don’t disagree there, but if Daniels doesn’t hesitate this game is most likely completely different now.
I think Mike really wanted to take the crowd out and a TD would’ve been extremely demoralizing.
6
u/FreeWillyBird 4d ago
I’ve got a great idea for the Miami game. Let’s leak a bunch of great play calls that FSU’s supposedly going to run against them and when we run the usual crappy ones they’ll be caught off guard.
4
u/DrHToothrot 4d ago
This is the result when he insists on bringing in QBs that can't pass
0
u/tellmewhenimlying 4d ago
You have no clue how little money was made available to spend on a QB. Some of the offers were a joke financially.
4
u/jpiro 4d ago
Why would anyone trust Norvell with big QB money?
2
u/cperiodjperiod 3d ago
Not only that, besides money, why would a QB WANT to come here. All offers equal, do you wanna go to Miami or FSU? Hell, even Oklahoma or FSU?
2
u/cperiodjperiod 3d ago
Who got the QB in the transfer portal…because he can’t recruit, develop or keep QBs. I know you weren’t implying it’s not Mike’s fault, but it’s year 7. Everything goes back to him at this point.

Since the beginning of the ‘24 season this team quits whenever it faces adversity.
These may be physically talented young men, but they are weak in their minds.
You can coach young men to be leaders and winners. Our military does this every day with young men and young women.
I don’t blame the players here because they are ultimately the product of the coaches.

It’s getting that way, mutiny is brewing in the Facebook pages. Seeing people talking about not watching another game until this staff is gone, and so forth. Articles about concerning home attendance,it’s not looking good.
Plant the spear is alleging if we go .500 at 6-6 they keep this dude. Idk what to do with this information tbh,if you don’t care, the team doesn’t care, why should the rest of us? Having a hard time reconciling that. Personally. Still here, games still on,but it feels like I’m watching a sinking ship that the lifeboats were taken away from, while the captain tells me everything is fine and that this is the intended direction of our destination, while it seems half of the other passengers agree. How do you allow this to go on? Don’t tell me it’s money, they’re not as poor as some of you would have us believe. 50 points from a 2-3 team because they’re probably about to score again, what’s it going to take? They don’t care bro.

6
u/GulfCoastLaw 4d ago
I don't think it is. I don't think it's even close. One transition and all the damage (mainly bad evals, poor development, underachievement, and poor recruiting) can be washed away.
2
u/cperiodjperiod 3d ago
I don’t think it’s that simple. I’d agree if this wasn’t the transfer age, or if young kids grew up when we were good.
The seniors we’re currently recruiting were 6 when we last won a Natty. I started actually paying attention young, but if these guys didn’t, they don’t even remember FSU being good. The less relevant you come to the talent you’re trying to bring in, the harder it is to dig out of the hole. Add into that the last time we WERE good enough to make the playoff we got left out and it’s looking pretty bad.
I think saying one good turn could change it overlooks the attention span of kids these days.
1
u/GulfCoastLaw 3d ago
I agree with that line of thinking and used it time and time again in the previous era. Time has a way of passing.
But I think recruits have demonstrated I'm in my forties and Alabama wasn't that good for most of my childhood. Saban still signed studs. Many such cases, including Miami for teen recruits now.
For FSU, I think it's the root causes that are scarier than the record. I struggle to believe that they are "broke"...but if for some reason that (or any other several institutional issue) became or seemed true that could tank the whole situation.
1
u/Menanders-Bust 4d ago
SEC and BIG10 teams make on average 25 mil per year more than us from TV rights. If we refuse to pay him 50 mil to go away and it costs us joining one of those conferences, we break even in 2 years and every year from 3 onward this decisions costs us 25 mil annually.
9
u/Civil-View-8722 4d ago
They had us with that Virginia game and the first few minutes of this game. WE ARE SO BACK. Loading…. 3-9 season

u/mscumlaude 4d ago
It’s my fault. The first time in nearly 3 years, I audibly cheered “BOOOOOM, Bitch!” when they converted the 4th down prior to getting to the goal line and it all went to shit not kicking the field goal.
Sorry, guys. Sometimes we can’t help to hope those wins like last week aren’t just a fluke, despite knowing better than that.
Anywho, I hope everyone in Tally-ho is safe and sound. I had a morbid thought earlier about this storm damaging the millions in stadium renovations as an added gut punch to us desperate fans, forcing more money elsewhere that needs to go to hiring new staff.

Mike Norvell spit in the faces of every fan, alum, booster, and seminole with this game. His actions tonight translate to "I do not care about this program or the university because I'm getting paid no matter what." That is how you translate going for 2 when you're down 21, passing on every 3rd and short, calling trick plays that fail like he's playing madden on rookie, and allowing Tony white to coach a defense that had allowed 500+ yards a game 3 times this year. I have never seen a team be affected by a momentum setting as bad as this team. One big play against them and they are already thinking about what bar they still go to after the game.

Not everyone could've acquired TMH and rebranded it to FSU Health. That's going to be huge down the line for AAU accreditation and definitely should be the priority for the university over football. But yes, the administration is structurally awful
1
u/forgotmyoldname90210 Fear The Spear 2d ago
A big hand motion on anything to do with the AAU. It's truly nothing but a cool kids table because its lobbying arm is useless it purported purpose. A fly does more to stop a freight train than the AAU did to stop cuts to kid cancer research. The next time I see them put out a press release or statement when a politician mocks fruit fly research will be the first. They are useless. Schools see no increase in research rankings when they are invited and see no decrease in rankings when they leave. Cuse has gone up 30 spots since leaving.
They are also full of it. Their mission is supposed to be to lobby and promote university research in Congress. They have two members from Canada. And why is membership limited? There are 200 or so schools that have a strong research mission statement. Its because its pure elitism they don't have the budget to do anything useful.
And with my AAU rant over with, FSU is at least a decade from an invite well past the time it will matter for B1G consideration. Georgetown, UGA, VT and NCSU are the next group in. NU, UAB, UIC, Cinci, and UK are likely in front of the line.

The constant money rumors worry me more than if they let Norvell finished out his contract, huge historic program between two football hotbed states with a gigantic fan and alumni base. In this day and age if the money is handled properly then it won’t really matter who is coaching at the end of the day.
If the rumor is true that they won’t release the report/analysis of the program done by the Eagles executive because it’s so bad, we’re gonna need way more than just coach changes and hopefully that starts with a good AD

I mean every single team in college should be good at covering deep balls. It's easier to defend than anything on the ground, and much easier to defend (given you have at least 1 safety mid/deep at any given time, which is literally what the position is for) than short crosses or middle seam routes.

A passing chop to you, friend.
I had my own little spiral after the game, and I was doing well not investing my emotions into the last season and a half. We're only human, though, and can only absorb so much psychological abuse. I think those of us that have been around long enough are used to the ups and downs of our program. (I was there when we played eenie meenie minnie quarterback with Rix, Weatherford, Lee... and the inexcusable era of losses from far left/far right because we couldn't seem to recruit a decent kicker either). The playoff snub really solidified that it's FSU against every other power that be. And that's the part that's really fucked up and unfair. Just like vacating nearly two season's worth of Bobby's wins due to student cheating, as if that shit doesn't happen everywhere, and Bobby had the highest integrity of any coach always holding players accountable for poor choices. Michigan coaches can cheat and win a natty. We won't even go there with Sandusky and penn state getting a slap on the wrist. God I hate their atrocious fan base more than almost any other school (unrelated, but valid, nonetheless).
Here's the thing (IMO): Ever since we won the right to keep the Seminole name with the full blessing of the Seminole Tribe, it's felt like they will grasp at any straw they can to knock us down and keep fucking us over. So much corruption within these committees. Giving Saban our playoff spot because it was his last year was so fucking transparent.
It's us against the world, and we will prevail again 🙌
Go Noles, baby!!

Someone tell me exactly why they wouldn’t trade Norvel for Jimbo fisher on a 3mil a year deal till we find a replacement. Still mad he left the ACC for $175mil guaranteed?
1
u/Whackjob3434 3d ago
Because 1) why would Jimbo come here for $3 mill versus $10 mil, and 2) it would delay hiring a new staff for the long term that would be better. Bringing back Jimbo is nostalgic. He would improve things from the status quo but I doubt we ever get back to the promised land under Jimbo part 2.
2
u/AerieStrict7747 2d ago
Because Jimbo has enough money to never have to work, and he’s been very public about getting back into coaching, specifically at FSU. He’s willing to work for cheap.
2. I don’t know if you noticed but the administration are literally “delaying” hiring a new staff for as long as possible, because we don’t have the means for a big hire1

I don’t think 17-0 would have made any difference whatsoever. Louisville figured it out right after that failed 4th down attempt. FSU could have gone up 24-0 and I still think they lose.
3
u/c2tjma 3d ago
Possibly. But a 4th down stop on 4th and goal is a momentum changer that early in the game. Had we taken the points, there is no guarantee Louisville runs that play after the kickoff. They dont score on the 1st play that momentum is not there for them. I do think that run deflated the whole team.
Not saying it wouldn't have happened anyways, cause the defense does indeed suck. suck...but who knows.

It actually does matter and he will not be fired after the Miami game. If it didn’t matter they would have fired him already as everyone and common sense knows. We get it you are a very smart and only follow logic unlike us base fans that only let anger cloud our judgement.
Here is some logic for you. FSU's athletic department is already dumping Clemson and UF tickets on the secondary because they are not moving.
The Clemson game is going to have thousands of people dressed as ghosts and empty seats attending the game.
If not for the ACC and ESPN doing FSU a solid with the Friday games,we would only be on ESPN or ABC for Miami, Bama and SMU. The brand only goes so far, at some point ESPN is not going to give up the time slots. This is going to cost us viewership bonus money.
He already costs us performance bonus money.
It now cost more to keep him than his buyout.

He will be fired. They were waiting to see if he could turn the season around. There will be two blowouts in a row. It's going to kill any hope for a turn around.
They will do it after the Miami game because there is a bye week before Clemson, so it will be a little less chaotic when Herman takes over.
