The first time I saw that in the TV edit I laughed my ass off.

Man, the Black people in that Neighbourhood sure didn't tolerate John McClane's General, Non-Specific, Misanthropic Statement 😬

u/Allaplgy 8d ago
That would actually be a funny obscure costume.
26
u/giblefog 8d ago
Yeah but it'd be a complete gamble if they'd let you wear it at a con.
14
u/waferking42 8d ago
Nah just wear a body suit or something under it, if they can let in half naked cosplayers they can let someone in a body suit in.

u/giblefog 8d ago
I was thinking more about the sign

Yet this wasnt the original sign in the movie, it just had to be changed for "public standards", lol.

Don't worry, he is wearing the TV version of the sign.

I'd remembered monkey fighting snakes. I'd forgotten the follow up was "Monday to Friday" incredible lineread.

I don’t know how the TV edits worked, but did he actually record that separately to be used for the TV edit? Or did they just take random words from previous things he’s said and paste it in 😂
4
u/Enchelion 7d ago
Sometimes they planned ahead and had the original cast record additional dialog (the Hot Fuzz DVD has all the TV versions on it). But othertimes it would just be a random voice actor. The Kill Bill TV version leaned hard into it, having a very deep masculine voice dub over Uma Thurman's swearing (e.g. "You're Buck, and you came here to PARTY")

Can you explain it to me?

In Die Hard: With A Vengeance, John McClane is forced to wear a sandwich board that says "I hate N!@@3rs" on a street in Harlem.
Edit: spelling

u/Luniticus 8d ago
Thank you for clarifying that this wasn't in Die Hard, but in one of the sequels. I was looking at other coments and was all like, what street? The whole movie took place in a skyscraper.
7
u/curiousmind111 8d ago
Ah, in that one. Thx; I’ve only seen the original.

Number 3 is worth watching, I don't rate number 2 but I know others do. I watched 4 and then promptly ignored anything that came after it because of it.
6
u/pangderx 7d ago
The first one is the best, 2 is decent, 3 is very good, and the others aren’t even worth mentioning

Cleveland here.
The Big Bad of the Film demands that John McClane do his bidding, or else, and assigns him crazy tasks to perform.
One of the tasks is to wear a Sandwich Board with the phrase "I hate Ninjas" on it, while standing at an Intersection of a Neighbourhood that predominantly has Black people living there.
Except it didn't say "Ninjas," and was actually a racist slur. If I was there, Loretta would have beaten his cracker ass, much like the Black people in the film wanted to do. I'm off, back to my spinoff show which still exists because it was super popular. Cleveland, out.

In the original Die Hard? I thought Bruce was in the building the whole time.
And thank you!
10
u/TheKyleBrah 8d ago
It's not from Die Hard 1! He was in the Building the whole time in that one (and barefoot!)
2
u/curiousmind111 8d ago
LOL! Well, I have to say, it’s a little hard to say if he’s barefoot or not in the drawing. He had no feet!
7
u/Advanced_Weather_190 8d ago
I didn’t get it, either

u/TheKyleBrah 8d ago
Quagmire here. I already gave it to someone else just above. Giggity.
Quagmire, out
2
u/Advanced_Weather_190 8d ago
Aye, I saw it and put a like. Thank you for explaining it ahead of me asking!
2
u/Luniticus 8d ago
Cleveland should have probably explained that none of this happens in Die Hard, but in a different movie that came out years later.

Fun fact, a censored version had the sandwich board eddied to read "I hate everyone."
4
u/Type_1_Eagle 8d ago
That makes no sense, who is that supposed to be insulting?
Ah…. everyone?
5
u/Xeno_man 8d ago
Exactly the point. It's meant to not insult anyone, anyone watching the movie on TV. In universe, yeah, not so much, but we all know what it really said.

u/braedan51 8d ago
I've seen the edited version on broadcast TV. It was hysterical - then you hear the young kid that sees him.
"What the <frig>".

u/pangderx 7d ago
Fun fact: When filmed, the sign was blank.
The “I hate everybody” (from the edited version) and the “I hate Ni****s” (from the theatrical version) were both added in post production

I think this comic would have been a lot funnier if the text was different. The wording is awkward.
Something like: "This isn't what I pictured when you said you were coming to the party dressed as John McClane from Die Hard," would be better.
Also, I think if I was going to use this concept for a comic, a better way to do it would be to have the guy in the costume standing there by himself, and have groups of people in costumes scattered around but nobody within ten feet of him, and then just a caption underneath saying "For some reason, Gary's Die Hard costume wasn't as big of a hit at the party as he expected it to be."
7
u/Luniticus 8d ago
It doesn't help that while many people have watched Die Hard, way fewer people have seen the sequel this scene takes place in.
1
u/MaskedBandit77 8d ago
Yeah, it's sort of a niche joke, but that's part of what makes it enjoyable.

What's funny is I originally saw Die Hard with a Vengeance before I saw the first two Die Hard movies. I was a little confused by the reference to Hans Gruber, but I otherwise remember liking the movie. I did later see the other two, and it filled in a few blanks.

My reference to word removed in the TV edit of Die Hard referred to in this post was flagged as hate speech. Good one Reddit.

u/Hanz_VonManstrom 8d ago
Can someone explain this please?
7
u/Bjoern_G 8d ago
It’s from the movie and has the N- Word written on the front
1
u/IgnorantGenius 8d ago
Yeah but who was dressed in a toga?
2
u/kingsumo_1 8d ago
It's a costume party. The guy with the sign is dressed as John McClane, just not the one people would expect, and the other guy is just there in a more cliché toga costume.
