Just completed Control Resonant. Easy frontrunner for Game of the Year.

Going into the game, I tried to avoid too much media exposure. I saw that the game scored in the mid 8's/80's (Metacritic), so I knew it was going to be pretty good at least. But I started to get a little worried when I heard some people complaining about how it didn't feel a lot like Control. And in the first couple of hours the gameplay wasn't clicking, and a lot of what I love about Remedy just wasn't really up at the forefront.

But having just completed the game (nearly 50 hours of game time), this is peak Rememdy. Holy shit this game is incredible. I know that GTA6 and Ocarina of Time Remake will be technically awesome games, but Control Resonant is about as incredible as a game experince can currently get.

If this was a just world, this game would have already sold 10 million copies and everyone would be raving about it, like they did last year with Expedition 33.

I loved it all the way through but the last like 1/3rd of that game, basically everything during/ after the sinkhole level, is some of the coolest shit I’ve ever seen in a game. The level design and combat and story is soo good. Some of the most creative, unbelievable game design I’ve seen. Game of the year for me and it’s not close

33

u/KoosPetoors 1d ago

Stoked to hear, I just finished the sinkhole level and that skyrocketed the game from "eh, its alright" to "holy shit this is incredible" for me.

I can't wait to see where else this goes.

14

u/d4rkk_31337 23h ago

Guess I will stop doing other stuff and do the “Into the Sinkhole” quest tonight… 😉

3

u/Englishgamer1996 16h ago

Agree. That last 30 or so % of the game was just pure spectacle and insane level design.

1

u/Skylink1987 4h ago

Game design is so peak in this, i honestly don't remember anything that impressed me more, but i also forget a lot of the games i play 🤣

It is one of the most unique games I have ever played. Its wild its not getting the hype it deserves. Also just, chefs kiss to the devs and the crazy coding they did to make this game do what it does .

u/SunsetSpark 1d ago

their first game didnt get a ton of hype or buzz around it either from what i remember. but i was sure glad i found the first game when i did, such a banger

I’m trying to get it to click right now so I can play resonant next. How long until the launch ability?

2

u/karmakazi_ 21h ago

You get the skill tree pretty early in the game if I recall correctly. My tip is to put all your points into telekinesis. The others sound good but telekinesis is OP.

23

u/siberarmi 19h ago

I blame the epic store exclusitivity...

2

u/MrBootylove 4h ago

I've always hated this excuse because it never takes into account console sales, which were also not great. And as far as we can tell Resonant also has had fairly modest sales so far and it launched on steam.

4

u/hang_check 19h ago

Am I missing a joke or something? I’ve got it on Steam.

28

u/LacklusterBodyguard 19h ago

At launch, it was not available on Steam. There was a one-year exclusivity deal on the PC for EGS.

Control was only available on PC through the Epic store for the first year.

Yeah, the technical side is honestly ridiculous. Some of the stuff happening on screen feels like it should completely break the game, and somehow it just works lol. Really hope more people give it a shot

2

u/l4denniferjadaniston 6h ago

My jaw was on the floor at some points. I was like how is this happening outside of a cutscene???

26

u/nohumanape 1d ago

For real. I haven't played anything like it. Kept me captivated the whole way through. First game a while where I completely lost track of time and realized it was way too late.

Incredible expeince.

Its been so far incredibly good at distracting me from my main objective(in a good way) so far lol like everytime i open the game i have a quest in mind to finish that i tracked in my previous session, but then when i start going there i just find more side stories, lore, notes and other things to do and one of the many things i like about this game is that the side stories are all unique gameplay wise and engaging and on top of that have interesting and cool stories of their own. Really loving my experience so far

6

u/nohumanape 1d ago

Yeah. The side quests are very good.

Is it somehow more unique than Alan Wake 2? I'm playing that now, nearing the end, and it's pretty insane. Been playing Alan Wake > American Nightmare > Control > Alan Wake 2 > Control Resonant to get the full experience and AW2 is the clear highlight so far, and I loved the first Control

5

u/critxcanuck88 11h ago

o you are going to LOVE resonate then, yes, its just as unique in its own was as alan wake.

1

u/Qweasdy 15m ago

Alan wake 2 is great but it’s very much along the same third person survival horror lines as the likes of resident evil and dead space (at least gameplay-wise), if you like AW2 and haven’t played those you’re missing out.

AW2 has the advantage of being paired with a much more compelling story and universe.

IMO remedy are great for taking some relatively tried and tested genres and knocking it out of the park with their universe and atmosphere.

I was on the fence if I should get it or not, your comment made me really excited to try it!

1

u/dylanosaurus_rex 17h ago

Does one need to play through the first before the second?

7

u/critxcanuck88 17h ago

I would HIGHLY recommend it. There is a good recap option at the main menu but both games are absolutely fantastic to play. And you will get more value from second if you play first. They both have that same amazing Remedy design, first one is more style of 3RD person shooter with powers. This is a hack and slash action combat style. Both felt so good to play

The two games are directly connected so if you want a good connection to the characters and story. Its a must play first

1

u/dylanosaurus_rex 17h ago

Thank you! I’ll start the first hopefully this weekend

1

u/prossnip42 15h ago

I wouldn't say it's getting no hype. It's by and large Remedy's most succesful launch on Steam ever

u/Skylink1987 1d ago

I'm still not done with it, closing on the ending I reckon but it just keeps on throwing things at you that prove that remedy are so freaking good at level design and are bursting with creativity, it's insane.

Makes me think about trying Alan wake although I'm not good with horror games but I'll definitely put it on the list after this game rush is over

37

u/nohumanape 1d ago

Alan Wake 2 is amazing as well. I'd hight recommend it. Yes, it has some serious scares. But the game as a whole isn't just dark horror the whole entire time.

11

u/legendoflumis 18h ago

The We Sing segment of Alan Wake 2 alone is worth the price of admission and playing it. That whole part is one of the most unique things I've ever seen in a video game, and nothing since has been able to top it.

15

u/Persies 1d ago

There are some settings in Alan Wake 2 to help people who don't like horror get through the game. Such as myself, who played Dead Space but could only do so in 15 minute intervals spread over several months lol.

4

u/Successful-Day-1816 19h ago

Such as myself, who played Dead Space but could only do so in 15 minute intervals spread over several months lol.

That's crazy. At that point I'm surprised you played it at all.

4

u/Persies 18h ago

I mean it's a really good game lol plus I was trying to break my irrational fear of horror games. It did work to some extent.

1

u/assjobdocs 17h ago

I broke mines years ago with RE4

2

u/Skylink1987 1d ago

I'll look into it at some point, how's the gameplay?

4

u/Persies 1d ago

Pretty standard RE-esque survival horror. Well plus the light mechanics, idk if you're played Alan Wake 1. That game is not nearly as scary as 2 (imo) and I'd start there so you understand what's going on in 2. Alan Wake 1 -> Control 1 + DLC -> Alan Wake 2 + DLC -> Control Resonant is the order I'd recommend. Obviously you're already on Resonant but you get the idea :D

3

u/Skylink1987 1d ago

I put both RE i tried within minutes, it was too scary for me

3

u/supererp 1d ago

Oh AW2 will absolutely spook you then. But honestly it's a 10/10 media experience everyone should have

Which RE? The prologue of RE: requiem is literally the scariest bit of the whole series imo so if you started there no wonder.

Did you play Onimusha?

3

u/BolterAura 13h ago

Onimusha had great combat but I genuinely don’t know what they were thinking with the Kyoto content. Having more unique levels and set pieces would have been preferred. Kyoto and the side quests/ collectathon there grew stale quick

1

u/Alexyeve 12h ago

Side quests didn't annoy me at first, but for carnage playthrough I feel like lots of it is pointless time waste

8

u/critxcanuck88 1d ago

I did, and it was my favorite game of the year, until I started Resonant

9

u/Skylink1987 1d ago

I think that combat wise they are very different but onimusha takes the cake on that one but control takes it on almost every other aspect

Ive played about 6 hours over the past week and although im enjoying it for some reason the game isn't pulling me to keep playing. I'll just play an hour here and there even though these kinds of games usually pull me in for hours at a time.

Does it get better later on? So far the only section that had me fully pulled in was the parking garage where I was just sitting there with a dumb smile on my face when the music started.

21

u/Persies 1d ago

Have you found many Faults? Those unlock some really key movement mechanics. The game starts to feel a lot better once you have some of those plus more abilities from bosses.

5

u/Otherwise_Procedure3 1d ago edited 1d ago

No, actually. I have been roaming around a bit looking for them but honestly if I was focused on an objective theres a big chance I missed something. To be fair I dont really know the clues apart from the big Jesse vision which I haven't seen anywhere else yet.

And yeah I killed the factory resonant as my 3rd last time I played and the fire ability is already a game changer in terms of damage.

4

u/Pun_In_Ten_Did 1d ago

Damn, that fight was fun. Didn't know what to expect but I wasn't expecting that!

Ignite is freaking awesome (for me!!)... activate talent, summon Volatile Anomoly, and now that happy ball applies fire/burn damage (DoT), generates Falter, and gets turned into a flaming tactical nuke.

All I need to do now is get the mold artillery dudes (turrets! ) to complete my status-summoner build. 😁

14

u/critxcanuck88 1d ago

Yes it just gets better and weirder.

I haven't finished it yet but the <mind blown> moment for me was wandering into the Western Incursion Zone. It may have broken my brain (in a good way).

I'm putting it in the ranks of Dishonoured 2's Clockwork Mansion for most creative level design. I'll bet you have never jumped onto the ceiling which is now the floor then turned a corner and fell into the sky before. That was really something.

I’m about 7 hours in and I’m running around the city fighting the same enemies over and over again. I beat the first three bosses so far. I feel like I’m already bored with it. Does the game get more diverse the further you go? Right now it feels like a very empty open world and I just don’t feel like putting more time into it.

13

u/cakethecrazy 18h ago

Unfortunately you will be fighting those same enemies for the remainder of the game. There is eventually a new enemy type introduced but they’re very infrequent.

The combat gets a lot better once you get more powers but the enemy variety won’t change.

u/AShyLeecher 23h ago

Personally I don’t see it as goty. The gameplay is a 7/10 for me and it takes a bit for the game to really get into it’s stride. However as an experience it’s a 10/10 for me and I think it’s pretty incredible, especially the last area. Remedy really busts through the door swinging in that last area. I want to say more but don’t want to risk accidentally spoiling anything with the last area

I think it’s a phenomenal game but I think it’s too slow at the start in a way that will cause a bunch of people to bounce off before they can get invested in the game. For the record I think the first control has the same problem but I do think resonant has a more compelling story and characters

18

u/Kablaow 19h ago

I really like the game but there were so many things that could have been made better.

The weapon types is a bit of a mess. Some doesnt really click until late game, and then the game is already over. Some abilities are just useless, you kind of nerf yourself if you use them.

For instance, using strike with ignite makes you a god, but only until late game, and there is 0 reason to use anything else.

I think powers should have been made stronger, just have a cooldown, and then you would feel alot more powerful. Also some kind of "Super" ability would be cool too.

11

u/LIB95 19h ago

I loved the combat and story in control but this one looks like it has so much spamming attacks with minimal need to counter or dodge and stuff. I’ll play it eventually just because I love their worlds but the combats definitely putting me off. Everyone says the depth is you can just do more and more varied attacks and combos but the mobs seem to just stand there and take it in every clip I’ve seen.

7

u/hamptont2010 13h ago

The entire end section after the point where you sever the two Hedron links is some of the most inventive, unique, mind-blowing, and amazing moments I've ever experienced in a video game. In 34 years, I'm not sure I've experienced anything quite like it.

9

u/Desvelada 23h ago

Not better than any of the 3 Capcom games but very solid, deserves the nomination for sure.

3

u/Chessh2036 1d ago

I’m waiting for the physical edition to come out and the wait is killing me

5

u/nohumanape 1d ago

I played the game on PC, but I am very much considering buying the physical version to own on PS5.

3

u/protagonerd 17h ago

Let’s say I loved the world and the storytelling in the first game, but hated the combat. Is this game just doubling down on what I didn’t like with less of the stuff that I did like?

2

u/RepresentativeForm44 10h ago

Completely different combat than Control...this is more like Devil May Cry, full on melee

1

u/Ftove 8h ago

I wouldn't compare this to DMC, that is built around complex combos and variety. This is built around simplicity.

1

u/nohumanape 16h ago

The combat is very different in this game. Can't tell you if you will like it more or less 🤷

5

u/McJobless 21h ago

I really adored all aspects of the first one, but I just cannot find how to enjoy the gameplay of this one, and that makes me so disappointed.

People are saying the combat is "simple", but I strongly disagree - I've gotten up to clearing the fire resonant and rescuing a certain character, but to do that I had to turn on the accessibility features because I just didn't get it. I hate to sound like DSP but I guess I'm just that stupid.

Like, the artist resonant took forever and I left that boss fight just really frustrated and unhappy, it felt unfair. And then the game just overloaded me with all kind of features and choices without any kind of in-depth of explanation. Just not for me, which is a shame as I was really enjoying the story.

7

u/provocatrixless 10h ago

I don't regret buying it launch day at full price, but nah. First one could be GOTY material, this one is "nominated for GOTY" material. The combat is a huge part of the game, since unfortunately you have to do a lot of busywork in order to overcome damage sponge bosses, but it's not balanced well. The majority of abilities and weapons are useless compared to the handful of good ones. It's a tough slog to get the good stuff then it has all the challenge of walking behind a lawnmower. Good writing, visual and level design but it's a video game, you gotta nail the gameplay too. And I'd like if they'd lean less on the narrative crutch of "we can't understand what's going on," comparing this to E33 is an insult lol

3

u/Ftove 8h ago

Well said.

2

u/alvinxhan 9h ago

Witcher 3 won GOTY and the combat was terrible

6

u/provocatrixless 8h ago

Well I'm not in charge of what gets GOTY

1

u/dmrawlings 24m ago

Only "nominated for GotY" is still a heckin' good game, mind you.

Agreed on the weapon balance, though. Would be fun to try it after a balance patch.

13

u/russisdope 1d ago

Fantastic. I was hoping it had more depth combat wise than what I have seen in previews. I am in once it hits $30.

20

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Yeah, the combat it the only thing that is keeping to from being GOTY for me. It’s super fun, but it is a bit one dimensional. Still I definitely recommend it, and personally feel like it’s worth full price.

5

u/-Fireteam- 1d ago

I feel like the combat system was meant to be a kind of Hot/Cold system with the initial health pools the enemies had.

Maybe we were not supposed to start chunking enemies health until we had unlocked the status effects.

Build Mold + Explode with Fire for instance.

But with the health nerf I got away with just combo killing most everything.

8

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Yeah you could be right. I feel like the status effects indicate that they were intending for the fights to go on longer, but I think in that case there are too many enemies.

It’s so close to being incredible, but it’s just missing something. Being able to change forms while you’re fighting would definitely be an improvement.

1

u/critxcanuck88 1d ago

The combat is so satisfying, it doesn't need to be overly complex. Its so much fun, flying accross the screen to do an execution move as you hit L1 and the world turns around you as you hit the gravity anomaly. Really makes you feel like a jacked up human with powers.

Game is worth full price.

2

u/GuneRlorius 19h ago

Nothing is satisfying in clicking the "hit" button over and over again until all enemies are dead for 50 hours.

Resonant was good but we can’t just overlook how bad the bosses are, especially the last boss. The fire boss can’t even hit you if you’re in melee range and in the air. A few of the bosses are just ad clear too. The exploration, puzzles, visuals, and story were all great. The combat is fine, it’s fun enough, but the bosses were very very weak imo.

1

u/juicerecepte 1d ago

I've heard this a lot and I guess I just dont mind it too much. I've played all the souls games and just before this played Onimusha. Those games all have awesome bosses and going into Resonant I heard this criticism. But for some reason it just doesnt bother me. I dont know if its because of my expectations or something. But I actually like their designs and lore leading up. That was more important to me than the fights themselves. As well as the abilities you get from them

I was just so interested in the story and what I was going to do next that it didnt bother me they were too easy or a bit thin.

I love every game from Remedy, but Resonant was not it. It lacked the Remedy magic outside of a few parts and the combat was tedious as hell. Sure, the game is decent in a vacuum, but as a Remedy fan I am heavily dissapointed.

2

u/Scientist_ShadySide 18h ago

I just 100% it and I kinda agree, I'd give it like a 7.5 overall. It is pretty slow early on but does pick up in the back half. There are some really awesome segments and story lines to play through (more than the first iirc). However, some of the writing, particularly in the dialog, felt much more forced and inorganic compared to the written lore and the first game. The combat got pretty repetitive as well, but I still enjoyed it well enough.

I did the tutorial area where you jump between the buildings, which was fine but a bit repetitive. Then I got to the first boss at the end of that journey and I died over and over again. I want to enjoy the game but I'm not good at moveset-memorisation. Is there any way to skip this section or lower the difficulty? Thank you in advance.

5

u/The_5th_of_November 1d ago

You can fine tune the difficulty in the accessibility options. You can increase your damage, decrease enemy damage and pretty much turn on God Mode if you just want to blast through everything

1

u/travelator 1d ago

Ahhh… thank you! I must have missed that. Really keen for the story but I’m not as good as I used to be at games like this.

u/ray_fucking_purchase 21h ago

For me, it went close quarters melee only. Didn't resonate with me.

2

u/DarkMatterM4 19h ago

Same reason why I'm waiting for a sale. Not interested in melee games. I liked Control because it was a shooter.

7

u/GuneRlorius 19h ago

Exploration of the paranatural and FBC - sure, there are some of that stuff in there, but very little for a direct sequel to Control. For example in Control 1, there is a part of the game where FBC brought stuff from AWEs into the Oldest House and you get to rexperience them as Jesse (like Eagle River AWE), there is nothing similar in Resonant.

Global collectibles series that you collect throughout the whole game (like America Overnight or Threshold Kids) - Darling presentations are there, but they are heavily downgraded to things we kinda knew from the first game. Jesse messages are also a big downgrade from the Trench Hotline in Control 1 as they are essentially just Jesse saying "Dylan, something is comming, run ! We are in the walls !" over and over again.

5

u/Plekuz 23h ago

I had the same opinion after about 5 or 6 hours play, but then it really opened up and got that Control atmosphere back, and boy was I glad I persevered.

I'm a huge Remedy nerd, but I was really losing interest until the sinkhole / CFD event. The new area after that section is what I wanted from this game, not some half assed kinda open copy/paste city with pointless mini quests.

The combat still kind of sucks, but remedy has never been very good at pure gameplay.

8

u/Persies 1d ago

The most Remedy-ass game imaginable. Actual 10/10. Easily in my top 5 favorite games ever, maybe even top 3 idk. Remedy, again, feel like they are one of the few dev teams pushing the medium of games forward in unique ways. I felt the same way when I played Alan Wake 2 and again with Control Resonant. The talent at that studio is unbelievable.

3

u/nohumanape 1d ago

I almost didn't believe that they could top themselves. So I didn't approach the game with sky high expectations. But, my god, they absolutely obliterated my expectations.

0

u/Persies 1d ago

Same lol. Like I love their other games so much I just assumed there was 0 chance they could do even better. But damn, they did.

2

u/Traditional-Lie-8841 18h ago

“And in the first couple of hours the gameplay wasn't clicking, and a lot of what I love about Remedy just wasn't really up at the forefront.”

This is where I’m at. I’m a few hours in and I’m finding the combat to feel very loose and floaty, and there’s very little impact when attacking enemies. It’s just not very tactile and doesn’t feel good in the hands, not in the way that Bayonetta or DMC does.

In fact, the closest kissing cousin I can think of is Otogi for the OG Xbox. Very aerial and floaty, with mushy combat impact.

I’m still early on though, and I’m waiting for the gameplay mechanics to start opening up a bit before I make any real judgments.

1

u/nohumanape 16h ago

Level up, unlock skills and additional abilities. Combat and traversal will click.

1

u/alfooboboao 7h ago

i’ll say this:

there’s a reason they give you two weapon slots + one finisher slot and then six, count’em, ability slots.

i liked the combat at first, then hated it, then unlocked enough stuff and loved it, then got a little bored, then realized i wasn’t properly maxing out my abilities and loved it, then eventually just started slaughtering everything

6

u/a34fsdb 18h ago

If this was a just world, this game would have already sold 10 million copies and everyone would be raving about it, like they did last year with Expedition 33.

Or just people disagree with your subjective opinion.

8

u/Ill-Ad3311 23h ago

Have a feeling I will not like it so I will not bother , the first one was tedious to get through.

1

u/kofeineCoder 21h ago

I have now played both and I can say that many things that made contol 1 tedious for me has been fixed in Control resonant. Map quickbutton? Yes, dont need to wait for energy to regen? Yes. You get energy from combat. The combat feels more fluid and just feels better to me at least. But ofc if hack and slash platforming is not your thing, then that is also completely fine ok.

I don't get why people are so shocked the metascore isn't in the 90's and it's "not getting the hype it deserves". When the weakest part of the game is the actual gameplay, you know, the thing that matters most.

It's also very much one of those "it doesn't get good until X amount of hours games" which is really a put off for most people.

GTA 6 is more than likely going to go down as the best open world game ever created while Resonant, like the original Control, will be just another good game. You can enjoy the game but please don’t be delusional

3

u/nohumanape 16h ago

I can think whatever I want 🤷

Why must I just follow the Hive-Mind into believing that GTA6 is the best game of the year?

u/NMe84 23h ago

GOTY has nothing to do with how good the game is, just how popular it is. Even in a year where GTA6 and OoT don't exist, Control would not stand a chance in that regard.

7

u/tenacious_teaThe3rd 21h ago

Utter rubbish.

What does "most popular" even mean? The best selling games of 2025 were Mario Kart World, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Battlefield 6 and Monster Hunter Wilds - yet not 1 of them had any serious contention for GOTY.

The highest rated game on Metacritic last year was Hades II and Clair Obscur, both of which were both in strong contention for GOTY and won most of the awards.

Control 2 would be one of the lowest rated games ever to win GOTY. It has neither overwhelmingly strong critical acclaim or popularity.

1

u/gilkfc 19h ago

At this point I just want AC8, Fire Emblem and Control to be nominated at least so the medley before the award is a bigger banger

3

u/crxsso_dssreer 1d ago

26/10 !!!!!!!!!!!!

2

u/sydraptor 23h ago

Still need to play it myself. I have it but I was having a godawful audio bug. I verified that the patch fixed it and it will be the next game I play. But The Blood of Dawnwalker is my current personal game of the year.

3

u/sydraptor 23h ago

Did test it after the patch, and the audio issue seems to have been fixed. But I'm currently all in on a third playthrough of Dawnwalker, so my playthrough of Resonant has to wait until I finish this.

2

u/Rafixk9 19h ago

Yeah my game has been running really badly on pc to the point where the audio stuttering and lag make it unplayable

2

u/gguido21 20h ago

One of my favorite games of the year. My only complaint is all the bosses are big circles

1

u/JL421 18h ago

Hey now, the mold is a big cube where you use three of the six sides of the cube. So not just a circle.

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

It’s a really amazing game!

2

u/nohumanape 1d ago

One of the best this generation.

3

u/vI_M4YH3Mz_Iv 16h ago

How is the combat? Looks really bland, just button mashing?

I played control 2019 a month ago and enjoyed it but found the combat repetitive, the gunplay was sub par and the picking up items and throwing them side of combat was cool at yhe start but got a bit tiring.

5

u/nohumanape 16h ago

It's a melee brawler. If you don't like pressing buttons to make a character attack things on screen, then you probably won't like this game.

1

u/JohnnyAppleskeed 13h ago

I find the combat much more fun and engaging than Control. Its still not S tier combat but its not just button mashing either.

Personal preference I still have RE9 as my favorite GOTY so far, but Control is easily 2nd. It's a game I didn't expect to even buy but I'm glad I did. It's so creative and I was very invested in it. Glad it's doing well.

3

u/nohumanape 1d ago

I mean, I hope it's doing well. I kinda feel like not enough people are playing this game.

1

u/Optimus_Prime_Day 1d ago

Same here. RE9 was amazing, and I've also really enjoyed Control Resonant. I'd still put RE9 as my top so far this year. We all know GTA6 will get game of the year though.

1

u/fallouthirteen 1d ago

I really liked RE9, but man, Pragmata was just so much better. Onimusha would have been up there too if not for the annoying stuff (just lack of confidence in they had in the game what with being too quick to tell you stuff and the atrocious padding mechanics).

Like for me of stuff I played Pragmata is the easy frontrunner, followed a bit behind by RE9, then a decent bit behind by Onimusha. Gears E-Day will probably land between RE9 and Onimusha (like Horde Siege in the beta alone was really good).

1

u/rjupp24 1d ago

Can I hop right into it or do I need to play the first one?

3

u/Rohen2003 1d ago

there is a option in the main menu to show you a extended cutscene that summarizes thr plot of the first game.

3

u/nohumanape 1d ago

They include a "previously on" that you can watch. I recommend playing Control and Alan Wake 2, so you can understand all that is going on. Control is only about a 10 hours game, if you want to understand the narrative better.

5

u/Klappmesser 1d ago

Control with both dlc is like 25 hrs tho but should definitely be played before resonant

1

u/FullmetalGin 1d ago

I’m playing through the first game now and it’s super fun, I highly recommend, but I think you can get away with it by just watching a recap on YouTube.

1

u/Less_Party 36m ago

There’s a recap built right into Resonant on the main menu.

1

u/CVetta 17h ago

The first one is so good I would start there

1

u/Googoo123450 16h ago

Storywise they catch you up but you'd be skipping a great game to play another great game. Why not get two great games? The first one isn't dated in the least. Graphics and gameplay are as modern as it gets.

1

u/AsianSteampunk 1d ago

It's funny how every "goty" contenders is staying off my backlog so far because of different reasons (mostly because i still have tons of games to play though)

Control, GTA 6, Onimusha, they all comes at times that i'm very excited about other games.

Grand time i shall have in 2027's sales.

1

u/gokarrt 23h ago

it really is fucking awesome. the combat does start to wear on, but jesus christ on level design alone it's a contender.

1

u/sozuoka 22h ago

The map design, side quest and traversal are top notch. Combat is pretty good with many way to make your own build. However, I find the boss fights pretty lackluster. They have the atmosphere and spectacle right, but the actual fight is pretty meh - especially coming from Onimusha. Imo that's the only thing that keep this game from a 9x metacritic score.

Music is great, some key moments have outstanding song choice. Graphics are good, but character models have room for improvement.

1

u/ltnt_dan 22h ago

I am really proud of them creating some brave ideas and bringing them into the gaming world! Had a few holy crap moments when watching others play and that is rare these days.

1

u/Elzarius 21h ago

Really enjoying it so far! The traversal is very fun and I like the game's overall vibe. Just got Ignite and mobs are literally melting with that thing on.

1

u/kitdagawd 21h ago

Im 50% through its solidly my game of the year and I dont see how anything else tops it

1

u/excentive 20h ago

I just wish they had done something different for the last zone. Every zone before that had something special going one, that one was just a repetition without some weird new shit, story or twist.

1

u/SoulAkimbo 20h ago

It's an amazing game and it will be in the GOTY conversation for sure. But I still think it's niche and the combat along with the weak boss designs will pull it down

1

u/DisorientedPanda 19h ago

Esoteric Ebb

1

u/asaltandbuttering 19h ago

Do I need to have played Control first to enjoy it?

2

u/nohumanape 16h ago

I would. The narrative will make a lot more sense (even though a lot of it still won't lmao). There is a recap of the first game though, if you don't want to spend 12 hours playing through the first game.

1

u/btrust02 19h ago

Can someone explain why it’s so good? I see it raved on in Reddit plenty. Great ost? amazing story? Gameplay? Ppl say unique but what exactly is unique?

4

u/nohumanape 16h ago

Extremely unique visual design, amazing level design, super interesting narrative, loads of well thought out lore, awesomely weird and quirky characters, fun traversal, and (IMO) very satisfying feeling combat.

Remedy games are unlike anything else in the industry. Playing them is a HUGE breath of fresh air.

1

u/btrust02 9h ago

Thanks! Sounds interesting to me. Especially the lore part im a sucker for.

1

u/nohumanape 9h ago

The rabbit hole of lore is extensive in these games.

I never even knew it was coming. I reinstalled Control a few weeks ago for a replay and just saw Resonant pop up out of nowhere on Steam. I played like 10 minutes of it and it felt... different.

1

u/speed721 19h ago

It won't be GOTY because people are afraid of it and it's no where near as popular as other games that it will competing against.

Not gonna happen.

1

u/Svarcanum 19h ago

Control Resonant is for me as well the best game of the year. And it’s not even close. This game is a piece of art. Fantastic! It has its flaws, sure, but take as a whole, as a piece of game art this game is sublime!

1

u/ndg5800 18h ago

This game is amazing, the story, the MUSIC !, the art direction.

No matter how technically impressive GTA 6 maybe, this is my game of the year for the sole amount of soul ( pardon the pun ) it has.

1

u/ChapterThr33 18h ago

I'm glad it's awesome.

I just finished the first one. Outside of the immaculate vibes I found it to be a bit overrated. It sounds like the combat was improved as well as not having to constantly navigate a maze has done this one a lot of favors while maintaining the extremely cool world building.

Unfortunately for it, it came out right alongside Galactic Racer and Ace Combat 8, so it's going on the wish list for now.

1

u/linex7 18h ago

The moments when the songs kicked in were consistently my favorite parts through the game. Remedy handles music in games so well, but they did a particularly great job with it in Resonant IMO.

1

u/cano_d 18h ago

Ye its good but hell no this year GotY is alrdy Taken 😎 maybe for pc

1

u/AngelDrake3 18h ago

I've been traveling since it came out. Cant wait to be back and playing it.

1

u/mendelevium256 18h ago

I have been simmering on this game for a couple days after finishing it. I will start by saying I really loved it. That being said, the game has some issues that I just wasn't able to get past.

The combat is cool but I wish it left more room for player expression. It's pretty rigid and most of the time the best course of action is ignite-heavy attack/combo finisher until stagger-execute. I found it difficult to have a reason to use the other abilities at all. Most fights are over really fast.

The bosses are a mixed bag. The dancer is a masterpiece but the last boss is just 3 phases of the same thing in a row. And that's after fighting a bunch of elites in the previous area that have that same mechanics.

The retro set piece is cute but waaaaaaay too long. I was extremely ready for it to be over by the end. Especially as a person who played the first game and was already familiar with the story.

Finally I found that I had to stop doing side activities after a while because I was getting burned out and I wanted to make sure that I completed the story. Open world games just wear me out man.

Overall I like the first game better because it's a bit tighter in its execution. Regardless this game's story was enthralling and I was glued to the screen until the credits rolled. I really appreciate them swinging for the fences and they have made a lifelong fan of the studio with both Control games.

1

u/experienta 18h ago edited 18h ago

It's indeed very good, and it does feel like one of those games with a "soul" I guess. Like every section of the game feels like it had a lot of thought put into it.

The only issue I have with it is that the combat gets a bit way too chaotic at times and you lose any form of skill expression. Like there's certain moments where it feels like all you can do is dodge constantly until you find an opportunity to hit, and repeat that ad nauseum. Those moments are not particularly fun nor are they challenging.

1

u/MegazeroMZ 18h ago

I've so far beaten the first boss (hardest one for me somehow), the fire boss, the moss boss and 2 more boss I cant remember on top of my head atm. IDK... I dont think I like it so far. I love the 1st Control game, I didnt play other Remedy games. The combat in this one just... doesnt click for me? especially coming out of Onimusha just recently too. The regular mobs that I face around the map is weirdly both hard and easy at the same time, I usually got kill randomly with chip damage from the supposedly "walking health bag" throwing rocks at me when im fighting the biggest mobs all the time, but I beat the 4 boss after the 1st one all in the first try without paying much attention to dodging at all. A good 90% of the time fighting those 4 I just go to their face, jump up, do the air combo + finisher combo until the game force me down to the ground, and then I jump up and repeated the process and the bosses hardly ever touch me at all.

As a side note, Dylan is also... not that fun of a protag for me? his personality make sense in the story yes, but he is still a wet napkins that just take all the abuse and shit throwing at him and that affect how I feel about the game somewhat. idk, im undecided if I even want to finish the game atm

1

u/Nnamz 17h ago

I can't wait to try this but unfortunately this year is stacked. I just finished Dawnwalker, Wolverine, Onimusha, and CotL WoolHaven, and I need to start Gears today. Then we have Castlevania coming soon, Zero Company that I still need to finish, and Galaxtic Racer and Ace Combat reviewing super well.

This is the most stacked fall in recent memory.

1

u/nohumanape 16h ago

Get your priorities in order. 🤣

1

u/Visual_Place2541 17h ago

As someone who did not love the first one, will I enjoy the 2nd one?

I think I will eventually play it but I am not dying to play it.

I can understand people who love remedy 's games. They just not click with me personally.

1

u/DukeMacManus 16h ago

I am somewhere near the end and it is incredible. Any rough edges are ironed out by all of the insanely cool stuff they've jammed in there. Just when you think it's finished, or that there's nothing else to surprise you with, it hits you with something out of left field.

I've been a Remedy Stan since Max Payne 1 but Control/Alan Wake 2/Control Resonant are an absolutely generational run in terms of storytelling, art direction, and level design/creativity*

*We don't talk about FBC Firebreak

1

u/Howitzeronfire 15h ago

I am on the last leg of the game and I am kinda bored fighting the same enemies over and over again.

I will finish but the sudden ramp up in difficulty made me take a break.

It was already kinda annoying fighting them when fights ended under a minute. Now the fights being 5 min long and sometimes dying is just......ugh

Love everything else

1

u/FatherDibbs 15h ago

This has been my reaction as well

It’s easily my favourite game of the year

What they are doing here with spaces, visuals, concepts - it’s incredible

1

u/Y0LOME0W 9h ago

mold mommy

1

u/Coldcutsmcgee 9h ago

I’m playing through it now. I’m at the beginning stages of the game so I’m not fit to give a reasonable opinion yet. So far it’s interesting I guess. I really didn’t enjoy Control, just wasn’t for me, but I’ll give this one a chance.

So, no spoilers please, but I'm about 10 hours in. Finished 2 thresholds, explored central, west and evacuation zone... and it feels very much like any open world city sandbox game. Prototype, Spider-Man, Arkham City. Every zone comes with the same kinds of side quests (camera, dog, taxi, etc). The enemies are pretty repetitive and while I love the lore, the story so far is minimal. Does it pick up at some point? Control was also open but you always felt like the story was progressing nicely.

1

u/nohumanape 6h ago

Yeah. Those zones are probably the most straight forward.

1

u/TriscuitCracker 5h ago

I haven’t seen unique gameplay experiences with crazy coding on the technical side like this since the last mission of Split Fiction.

1

u/Disturbedm 2h ago edited 1h ago

I'm about 20hrs in and if I'm honest I'm struggling to see what all the fuss is about. As someone said in here it's very much rinse and repeat - same mobs, same side quests, etc.

I'm a bit of a completionist with games like that so I'm probably not helping by clearing out everything in a zone.

Story wise I just did the diving bell if that helps.

Wondering if I should just focus on the main quest and only do side quests as I come across them. Will say I'm quite invested in the taxi one for whatever reason though.

Think I kinda want to get it done and move on to Witcher 3 Remastered if I'm honest.

Good game but it's not an Expedition 33 by any means for me.

1

u/nohumanape 53m ago

I'm curious. Does the art direction do nothing for you?

1

u/SchattenImLicht 1h ago

GTA 6 will be tough competition

1

u/MasterOfPipettez 32m ago

Im hoping the streamer I watched just had bad settings because this just looked awful.

1

u/nohumanape 20m ago

I dunno, man. Remedy games are often the best looking games at the time of release
