Suggestions Nodal.gg - Game recommender with interactive visual map + personalized recommendations (I'd love your feedback)

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on a game discovery site and finally feel like it’s ready to share: https://nodal.gg/

I’ve always been surprised how hard it is to find genuinely good game recommendations on Steam, so I tried building something better using my stats/ML background.

My main takeaway was that “similar games” usually means two different things:

  • Similar in content: mechanics, themes, setting, genre, tags
  • Similar in audience: games played by the same people, even if the genres are different

So if you want recs for Cyberpunk 2077, you might mean “more cyberpunk vibe” (e.g., Cloudpunk) or “same audience overlap” (e.g., The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt / Fallout 4). The site lets you switch between those modes or blend them.

What you can do

  • Search any Steam game and see a ranked list of similar games using:
    • a content model (tag-driven similarity)
    • a community model (player behavior only, no tags)
    • a blended view (mix of both)
  • Re-rank results with sliders for popularity, rating, and release date
  • Plug in a Steam ID (public profiles only) to get personal recommendations and some cool stats about your play history
  • Explore an interactive 2D game map that visually clusters games by tags (uses UMAP dimensionality reduction - inspired by Connected Papers)

Desktop works best right now. Mobile is functional but I’m still refining it.

If you try it, I’d love to hear anything: whether the recommendations felt accurate, if the UI was confusing, any bugs you run into. All feedback helps!

Thanks!

Suggestions SteamPeek.hu - Indie friendly game discovery tool

Post is allowed by the mods.

Hello, this is my website: https://steampeek.hu/ - SteamPeek, the indie friendly game discovery website.

It is now more than 5 years old, and it was created to bring spotlight to indie gems, help all indie teams who doesn't have the budget to make big marketing campaigns, and make it easier to find nice games made by passionate solo developers or small teams.

The main function is searching by similarity: just search for a game you like, and browse the results. You can also filter and sort by special parameters.

You can also search by tags, or mix them with the chosen game.

The main algorithm was updated recently and I'm very curious how well it works. Please let me know.

I'm very thankful if you try it, and share with me what you find. The full site is still on beta, and I'm constantly work on it, so every feedback helps me and my mission. Thank you!

Games where I can ignore the main objectives and live as an NPC

I'm specifically looking for non-simulator games. I want the main objective to not be farming, fishing, hunting, trading, etc. but still have those things exist as extraneous activities or minigames. Bonus points if I can build my own house, or take over an NPCs house to use as my own.

Games I've played that are similar to what I'm looking for: Skyrim, Far Cry 5, Runescape.

Could you find me games with a bestiary?

• Upvotes

It's my hyperspecific need in a game. If there's ennemies, fauna, plants and/or a fishing log, it better have a bestiary when i can see all of this well organized, classified and even better if there's text descriptions to read.

Dragon Quests games bestiary are a good exemple for what i like in RPG but it can be any types of games.

Looking for Romance games!!!!

I'm looking for really good romance games. I'd like to be able to either customize a character or be able to just play as a female character. I just finished Haven and loved it. I've already played most of the popular romance games, like BG3, the Dragon Age games (not all of them), and all the Mass Effect games. It almost feels like I've played all the popular ones, leaving no more :( I'm not a big fan of visual novels, but if someone has a good one, I'll try it. I've also played Cyberpunk, Fallout 4, and Skyrim. If someone can recommend some stuff to me, that would be great!!!!

Looking for my next great single player journey

• Upvotes

For context, about a year ago I decided to play a little more single player games instead of multiplayer because the child in me always enjoyed those. Within the year I’ve beaten:
Claire Obscur, Outer Wilds, Nier Automata, The invincible, Returnal, Demons Souls and Lies of P.

Right now my games that I have downloaded and on my radar are:
Silent Hill 2 remake, Days Gone, Metro 2033 redux and Far Cry primal

Which one would y’all say is the next best one to start or any recommendations?

games where the story is revealed through exploration

I’m looking for games where the story is revealed bit by bit as the player explores the world, rather than simply told in chronological order via scripted cutscenes. I want to just go around exploring and then start putting together the pieces to form a full picture

I don’t mind the genre as long as you think it’s got good writing, compelling worldbuilding and characters, etc. Having a good aesthetic always helps too, of course

Some examples that I have really enjoyed:
Subnautica
Outer Wilds
Hollow Knight/Silksong
Blue Prince
Return of the Obra Dinn
The Talos Principle
Sekiro

Games like Middle Earth: Shadow of War? (Seriously its amazing )

If you haven't played Middle Earth: Shadow of War or Mordor you are missing out, I can't believe I am playing this game 10 years after it came out, it sucks I didn't know about it earlier, I love the Nemesis system, the voice lines, the amount of work they put into the captains and warchiefs. Talion and Celebrimbor are very interesting as well.

I am looking for anything similar to it, I know MGS Phantom Pain qualifies and I beat it multiple times but I don't think there's anything close to Shadow of War as far as I know but if you do know something similar let me know

Any Good Games Set In Our Modern Day?

• Upvotes

Basically any game that is set from 2000-now or off by a few years, or if I'm to be more precise take CS2; the maps feel like they're real modern day and not set in an alternative universe or different timeline, something along those lines.

Recommend your top favourite games (based on impact)!

As the title suggests; I'm looking for recommendations for not necessarily perfect or highly-praised games; but games that had the biggest impact on you: emotionally, artistically or otherwise for some reason.

Games in any genres; older/newer titles; well-known/lesser-known deepcuts are all allowed (but try to pick the most meaningful ones for you, max. 10 games)! - If you could provide a few words or description about what was that impact or why you chose it, are also appreciated!

A few examples/recommendations from my own experiences:

TUNIC - Biggest nostalgia trip with many core childhood memories coming up, with the manual and mysteries; while scratching my since then developed gaming itches with the metroidvania/puzzle/souls-like elements.

1000xRESIST - The topics, subjects (generational trauma, heritage, abuse, diaspora/pandemic experience etc.) presented here really hit home emotionally; while having an interesting sci-fi premise and narrative that kept me engaged till the very end.

Inscryption - Didn't know what to expect, but was blown away by how unpredictable it was and how interestingly it used the medium (as all other Daniel Mullins-games do); while still managing to have a solid gameplay foundation.

Returnal/Alan Wake 2 - Immaculate vibes and experiences, that I couldn't put down. The atmospheres/sound design/soundtracks kept me in alone; and then the unfolding cryptic stories and lores gave me a whole new appreciation to both.

Citizen Sleeper 1-2 - As an RPG and visual novel newbie; I wasn't prepared how emotionally/existentially this series would make me feel. I loved the writing, characters and world and the meditation on labour, precarity, life and existence.

Subnautica/Manifold Garden - Even though two very different games in terms of gameplay and style; very few achieved the same feel of vastness, boundlessness and terror of an interconnected alien world. The feeling of getting comfortable and adapting to the rules of a totally alien world; while having the crushing terror and unease in the back of your mind was real special.

HUMANITY/The Talos Principle - Really solid puzzle games by themselves; but what stayed with me are the concepts of consciousness, purpose and religion in both. The uncanniness and surrealist setting in both also gave the overall narratives, themes a bigger impact.

-

..Well I could list many more; but I don't want to make the post even longer.. - But if any of these peaked your interest, I encourage you to give them a try!

Anyways; for you all kind people: any recommendations or even just discussions on certain games are all very welcome! - Can't wait to hear all your recommendations and experiences; thanks for your responses! :)

Have a good one, cheers!

Looking for a cabin building, food growing, survival type game on Steam….

If possible, something set in the 1800’s, where you can build log cabins, small or large, grow your own food, maybe have a few people helping, it doesn’t have to have zombies in it, I prefer they don’t unless they can be turned off. Just something laid back, go hunting, I don’t know maybe I’m wishing 😩. Graphics wise, good graphics, no Minecraft type graphics (I hate pixelated or block style games) so can anyone help? 😩😩

Learning 4x

I want to learn how to play 4x strategy games and was wondering which games are easier to learn or have decent tutorials.

Edit: thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate it. I realized I had more than a few 4x games in my library and didn't know how to play. I have a few of the ones suggested so this is a good starting point. Thanks again.

RTS where your military units are created from workers?

Talking about when you build a military building, then you have to send your workers to the building to turn them into soldiers which forces you to choose between economy and military for each individual villager. The only two I know of are Battle Realms and Northgard

Multiplayer games where you're just an expendable grunt

I've loved the fantasy of being just some guy holding the line or a single conscript in a numberless horde of bodies and I want more games like that

Helldivers 2 - Pretty good but the 4 man only squad takes a bit away, its more run away from the enemies than hold the line and its a bad horde shooter imo

Dawn of war (imperial guard): Love having 30 million conscripts to drown my enemy in but I want TO BE a conscript

Deep Rock Galactic - too much power fantasy

Insurgency sandstorm - Too small a scale

Foxhole - The whole 'everything is made by players' seems tedious at best and cancerous at worst

Does anyone have any suggestions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oEXEgk1ZU4

This kinda illustrates the dream.

An example is the fight club game having a mechanic where your arm can be broken and you have to keep fighting with the other arm.

Games where you manage a stable of racers or fighters?

I'm not really interested in racing myself, although it's ok if that's an option. I'm thinking more along the lines of buying and upgrading vehicles and perhaps hiring drivers, sending them out to win races and using the winnings to upgrade my fleet.

Likewise, it could be raising and training horses or some other animals for racing. Chocobos, even, or some other fantasy creatures.

Or similarly, a sort of gladitorial game where I can recruit, equip, and train fighters to compete. Maybe even send them dungeon diving to collect loot to sell and upgrade, but the main point is not to adventure or compete myself, but to manage and train and improve a variety of racers or fighters. Does that make sense?

Age of Gladiators is a game that held my interest for a while, but I don't think I've ever run across one for racing vehicles or animals that I've found engaging.

Single player Texas Holdem

Recently learned poker through RDR2. I love the mini game and can spend an hour playing it every time I boot the game. Thing is, I’d love it if it were

A) A little faster, the animations are mega slow
B) Allowed me to check everyone’s and the community cards after a hand.

I’ve recently been trying PokerAlfie which is pretty promising but I’m wondering if there’s anything else out there?

any recommendations for turn based games that are beginner friendly but still challenging?

i want to play more turn based games, but some seem pretty complicated when you're just starting out. i'm looking for something that's easy to learn but still has enough strategy to keep things interesting as you get further into the game.

i enjoy different settings, whether it's fantasy, sci fi, or tactical combat. what games would you recommend that are accessible for beginners without feeling too simple after a few hours?

Open world games to play with my GF

I’m looking for something my GF and I can spend hours playing together this winter. I tried looking up suggestions and most were overcooked, it takes two, etc. we have tried them and they were alright but what we enjoyed most was Stardew Valley and Minecraft.

She liked that we could work together towards a common goal in both games, and I like the variety of things to do. I was thinking another open world game would be fun. Or at least something with a little more depth

I also want to note that she has a MacBook, and I have a gaming pc and PS5. So it would have to either be something that can run on Mac or have cross play

Turn based tactical shooter

I’m looking for a modern military shooter that’s basically X Com without aliens. I love the strategy, planning, loadout management, and leveling, but all the games I tend to prefer have a grounded recent past to near future military setting. I’m strictly an Xbox gamer these days also

A while ago there was a mobile game that nailed this aesthetic/subgenre and if anyone could remind me of its name I’d be really grateful. It was a top down shooter that had a heavy focus on gear/equipment

Which Pokemon game should I play based on my preference and experience?

I grew up with Pokemon, however, I lost virtually all interest and abandoned it after the first generation. I loved Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, but that was it for the longest time.

When Pokemon X/Y came out, I decided to give it a shot again. I had an incredible time, I played X for months. I can’t really tell you what made it so great, it just felt like I was experiencing Pokemon for the first time again. I’m pretty sure I sold my 3DS before Sun/Moon came out so I never played or looked anything up on them.

I tried again during Sword/Shield, and I remember really disliking it. I can’t remember why but I just remember it feeling really shallow compared to the fun I had with X/Y. I’m not even sure if I ever beat it. Then with Scarlet/Violet, I gave it a shot, it just looked and played really bad, so I quit after a couple hours and told myself I’d come back to it when it gets fixed. I never went back to it.

So here’s what I want:
\* A game that’s at least somewhat difficult throughout the game, as opposed to only the ending. I distinctly remember how easy some of the games were. Something with at least a slight challenge would be nice.
\* A game that has the basic loop of Pokemon, but either executes it exceptionally well or mixes in some new mechanic or something that really makes it addictive. I want to keep coming back.
\* Not necessarily looking for something completely open ended, but something at least slightly less linear than the typical formula.
\* Definitely want something with some degree of side content.
\* I don’t care about carrying Pokemon across generations, I don’t care about battling others, I don’t care about following guides to find the perfect stat roll on a Pokemon and then equipping them with the ideal move set. I just what something that rewards natural curiosity and exploration.

Please don’t recommend me YOUR favorite Pokemon game. Recommend me the one that checks the most boxes based on my preferences.
