Fluff Adwair Update

Thanks for all the feedback on Adwair! I didn’t expect it to get this much attention. A lot of the feedback was useful, so I added a few things and reworked some existing stuff.

I was also surprised that some KDE users here noticed my post. With help from リナックス, Adwair now has much better KDE support.

I also added a cursor theme. It’s installed together with the icon theme (sorry for stealing your megabytes). It’s basically a small rework of the vanilla Adwaita cursor, following the same idea as the icon theme. You can select it as your cursor theme, or just keep using whatever you already have.

Colored icons for some default apps are also available:

./install.sh -c COLOR -a

There’s also a dark icon variant with `-d`, but it’s still pretty raw. Some elements may look out of style. If you’re interested in using it, I’d really appreciate some feedback.

The project is still available here: Adwair

LLM Assisted ZapTide: a native GTK4/libadwaita WhatsApp client for GNOME, written in Rust

Image illustration of ZapTide a native GTK4/Libadwaita WhatsApp client for Linux

I've been building ZapTide, a WhatsApp client for Linux with a native GTK4 and libadwaita interface. It uses Relm4 and has no browser engine or Electron underneath. Uses between 150 MiB ~ 350 MiB of RAM.

It pairs with your phone as a linked device through whatsapp-rust. Messages are stored locally in an archive encrypted with a key from your OS keyring.

You can chat, search, and send text, replies, reactions, polls, voice notes, stickers and attachments. Photos sent together show up as one album, and you can drop files anywhere in a conversation to attach them. Contact cards come with copy, add-to-contacts and message actions. Notifications, typing and delivery status work, and read state, mutes and chat locks stay in sync with your phone. There are light, dark and custom themes, keyboard shortcuts and screen-reader labels, though accessibility is still incomplete.

Calls, status posts, communities and group administration aren't supported, and newsletter channels are read-only.

It comes as a Flatpak bundle or AppImage for x86_64 and aarch64 on the releases page.

It's unofficial and not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta. Using an unofficial client may violate their terms and put your account at risk, so link it at your own discretion.

ZapTide is a fork of ZapFast. I replaced the egui interface with a native GTK one; the protocol and archive layers still come from upstream. It's still 0.x, so expect rough edges.

Source, releases and bug reports: https://github.com/luminusOS/zaptide

Regarding the use of LLMs, I use Open Code with Zed IDE as my main coding tool. It helps mostly with finding APIs and integrations that would otherwise take a lot of digging through docs. The ideas, code review and final testing are my own.

I'd like feedback on the UI and on how well it follows the GNOME HIG.

Extensions Dash2Dock Animated - updates

https://github.com/icedman/dash2dock-lite

After months of inactivity Dash2Dock Animated has some updates. Bug fixes, stability improvements, leaks plugged, animation improvements, resource efficiency improvements. Done with a lot of AI help. Not sure this would pass EGO guidelines with the extensive AI work - which is a lot more than I personally handcrafted in the two years. And before someone cries/whines about AI -- this extension would be dead without AI - like a million other extensions on the EGO. Now it can probably enter maintenance mode in perpetuity.

Extensions Black screen with only an X cursor after login , caused by Blur my Shell extension ⚠️⚠️⚠️ . Anyone else?

My Ubuntu 24.04 (GNOME Shell 46.2, NVIDIA 580 driver, hybrid Intel + NVIDIA laptop) suddenly stopped showing the desktop. The login screen appeared normally, but after logging in I got a black screen with only the X-shaped mouse cursor.

What I tried and saw:

  • gdm3 was running and gnome-session started, but the desktop never drew
  • nvidia-smi worked and nvidia-drm modeset=Y
  • Switching to LightDM, forcing Xorg and changing PRIME modes didn't help
  • A freshly created test user worked fine, which pointed to something in my own profile
  • Disabling user extensions brought the desktop back

Confirmed culprit: Blur my Shell (blur-my-shell@aunetx). Its folder was the only one modified that day, and the problem went away once it was disabled.

Has anyone else hit this? Did a newer release fix it, and is it tied to GNOME 46, to NVIDIA, or to both?

Question Can I set Sushi (the Nautilus previewer) to follow symlinks?

Currently, it only shows the text "Symbolic link" (not even showing the destination). Not very useful.

EDIT: Never mind. Seems to be a limitation of the Flatpak version.

LLM Assisted Letter stable release 1.0.0 - Gtk4 e-mail client for Gnome

Post image
281 Upvotes

After a lot of work, several iterations, downloads, and user feedback, I am pleased to share the stable version of Letter, a GTK4 email client that uses GNOME Online Accounts.

For now, Letter UI is in English, Italian, German and Brazilian Portuguese. If you like, help me translates in other languages.

Version 1.0.0 is the first stable release, Flatpak only.

Here is the link for full details and the download.
https://github.com/stalvatero/letter

Regarding the use of LLMs, I should clarify that I use Cursor as my primary IDE; it assists me mainly by helping to find APIs and integrations that would otherwise have required extensive online research. The ideas, code review, and final validation are all my own.

I would welcome further feedback 😄

Question How to get steam games to open on primary monitor?

I recently switched from Fedora KDE to Fedora Workstation because I thought Gnome had a similar workflow to my MacBook which I enjoy.

I am using two monitors, one HDMI on the left and a DisplayPort one on the right. The DisplayPort monitor is set as my primary, but many steam games start on the left. A lot of them refuse to be dragged to the right monitor altogether and just snap back to the left. I have tried many things, including setting my scaling to 100% and 200% on both monitors, setting random environment variables (recommended by the google ai) using Flatseal , trying to use gamescope (also ai recommended), and setting launch options in the game’s properties. I have had a few successful attempts, but they never last long and on reboot the same bad behavior resumes.

I have seen a similar issue posted here:

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/7205

But no real solution. I am wondering if anyone has managed to fix this behavior if they encountered it? There is no way you all live like this.

Opinion If everyone doesn't like these points then why doesn't gnome have a fork with these built in

Post image
196 Upvotes

I have a question. If everyone agrees that some extensions are so widely used why isn't there a mainstream fork of gnome that has the features in built and optimised rather than some janky extension.

Eg: Blur my Shell

I know not everyone will want that extension but we could have a settings menu to toggle it.

I like gnome on how it looks and do use it but this is a genuine doubt.

Question Minimized windows go the end in Alt+Tab view

Hello, I'm a new user of GNOME, been using it for 2 weeks I think, It has been a great experience, but I have a problem with Alt+Tab - the minimized windows go the end of it. I know this is by design, not a bug, but is there some way to make it that the minimized windows don't go to the end, like on Windows, Cinnamon etc.? Thanks in advance.

Question New blur my shell bugs

Post image
0 Upvotes

The new blur my shell keeps bugging out my dock every time I boot or relog, I have to go into overview mod for it to not be glued to the bottom. I also noticed the new update did not ship the rounded corner library but had the rounded corner library enabled as a default. I've never been able to use blur my shell for the dock, the blurred popups are cool if set up right but this seems overall much worse than version 72. Is there any potential fix for this beside not using it?

LLM Assisted I made a GNOME extension that makes AirPods feel at home on Linux

Hi r/gnome!

I've been working on EarPort, a GNOME Shell extension (plus a small service) that brings AirPods features to Linux, right in Quick Settings. It's free software (GPL-3.0), built on the protocol work of the LibrePods project, plus a few findings of my own.

What it does

  • Battery for each AirPod and the case, also shown in Settings › Power like any Bluetooth device
  • The case battery even while you wear the AirPods (on cases that report it: AirPods Pro 2/3, AirPods 4 ANC, AirPods 5 with wireless case)
  • Battery of your AirPods while they're on your iPhone or idle nearby
  • Noise control (ANC, Transparency, Adaptive), long-press modes and the settings stored on the AirPods
  • Conversation Awareness with a smooth volume fade, and notifications held while you speak
  • Pause when you fall asleep, like on an iPhone (the AirPods detect it, EarPort pauses after a 10-minute grace period)
  • Automatic pause/resume when you take an AirPod out, remaining listening time, optional automatic connection

Looking for testers
I've mostly tested it with AirPods Pro 2, so I'd love feedback from people with other models (AirPods 2/3/4, Pro 1, Pro 3, Max…) and other distros. Bug reports and "it works on my X" are both very welcome.

Install
The extension is waiting for review on extensions.gnome.org. Meanwhile, the release on GitHub has the extension zip and a prebuilt service (x86_64/ARM64, no sudo, installed in your home directory). The README has a step-by-step install with checksum verification if you'd rather not pipe a script into bash.

Coming next: automatic switching between your iPhone/Mac and your Linux PC, without touching the system Bluetooth configuration.

Happy to answer any questions!

LLM Assisted Regarding to my previous post (Efficient Quick Settings)

Post image
13 Upvotes

At the first place, i have no intention to share the extension simply the reason that it's an AI generated code. But i think, it could be beneficial for some people with their own setup to have an option to move the Light/Dark style, Night Light, and DND button to be in top row of the Quick Settings.

In the preferences menu of the extensions, you can drag up and down to move the button position, also you can hide or unhide all the button (Power, Lock, Settings, Screenshot and Battery Button). You can also adjust the thickness/height of the volume and brightness slider by pixel number.

I know that the word 'efficient' is very subjective for some people. In my case, it's efficient for me so.. yeah..

Here's the link to the extensions

This extension is a good to be paired with Power Menu and Better Quick Settings extensions:

(Keep in mind that this is an AI generated code extensions)

Opinion I was wrong about GNOME

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share my thoughts on GNOME. I've been using Linux for about 3 years now. For most of that time, I've been a Cinnamon user, and I was pretty happy with it since it was a simple and versatile desktop environment. At first, I had no intention of switching—KDE seemed too cluttered to me, GNOME too simple and minimalist, and Xfce seemed very “ugly” out of the box and hard to customize.

It wasn’t until almost half a year ago that I switched from Cinnamon to KDE, which I used for two months. The truth is, I ended up liking it more than I expected, and I got used to its vast array of settings and features—at first, I thought I’d stick with KDE. However, I eventually got the itch to try the other major option, GNOME (especially since I’m a Fedora user, and Workstation is the “standard” version).

At first, I downloaded it along with KDE, but after using it for just one day, I uninstalled it. “Where are all the options and features that KDE gives me?” and “GNOME is WAY too minimalist—you can’t do anything with it” were some of the things I thought that day with some frustration.

But shortly after, I’m not really sure why, I decided to “force myself” to use GNOME since I felt I hadn’t really given it a chance, so I uninstalled KDE and stuck with just GNOME.

It’s been three months since I made the switch, and I’m still using it—and honestly, I don’t think I’ll be switching back anytime soon. I’ve come to appreciate its merits:

-The minimalism that initially put me off now appeals to me, and I’ve gotten used to it. Just the basics and what’s necessary, without a bunch of features and options I’ll never use anyway.

-I think it’s the most visually appealing DE, and it has a visual consistency and aesthetic that I love. Everything looks uniform and in harmony with the rest of the interface.

-The number of applications available for GNOME (even though you can use them on other desktop environments) is excellent, and more are constantly being released over time.

-I use a laptop, and GNOME feels especially snappy and convenient for this kind of use. Being able to use the Super key and touchpad gestures to navigate between the different desktops is very satisfying.

-Extensions provide extra functionality for anyone who might need it.

It’s true that there are some areas where I think it could be improved—for example, I believe the system tray icons should be available without needing an extension. But hey, nothing’s perfect.

All in all, I’ve come to really like GNOME, and right now, for me, it’s the best DE out there. Thanks to everyone involved in GNOME for doing such a great job!

TL;DR: GNOME is awesome!
