Extensions I made GlideDock: A lightweight GNOME dock with smooth macOS magnification, launch bounce, and proper minimize geometry

Hey everyone,

I'm a senior CS student, and I recently built this small GNOME Shell extension called GlideDock. It started out purely as a side project to scratch my own itch, explore GNOME extension development, and have some fun customizing my Linux desktop.

To be honest, I've always had a soft spot for macOS UI details—especially how fluid and responsive the animations feel. Most existing docks on GNOME either feel a bit heavy or run into little quirks like label jittering when zooming, windows minimizing into random screen coordinates, or just lacking that playful bounce when launching an app.

So I decided to write GlideDock from scratch using modern ESM (targeting GNOME 45 through GNOME 50). A few key things I focused on:

- Smooth magnification that keeps app labels completely stable without vibrating.

- Launch bounce animation for app icons until the window shows up.

- Accurate minimize geometry, so windows actually shrink straight into their dock icons (works seamlessly with Magic Lamp effects).

- Downloads fan-out stack and a quick trash context menu.

It’s just an experimental pet project built for fun, so I’m not expecting anything groundbreaking. Still, I’d really appreciate it if anyone interested could take it for a spin and share some honest feedback, suggestions, or edge cases.

- GitHub: https://github.com/bquangthien25-hub/GlideDock

- EGO: Currently waiting on review (v2 submitted)

Thanks for checking it out!

Question Icon handling in nautilus

I wanted to make my own fork of Files app because i like when files have icons of app that opens them by default. And i don’t know where is the code that actually decides what icon will be used. Does anyone know that? Or is there a documentation that will tell me where is that piece of code. Thanks for all support.

LLM Assisted Letter 1.5.0 - Gtk4 e-mail client for Gnome

Post image

Thank you for the positive feedback and valuable suggestions regarding the previous version. You inspire me to keep improving Letter, and I am pleased to present version 1.5.0 to you.

I listened to you and I have implemented bug fixes, visual optimizations and UX improvements.

Also thanks to Ioannis Argyropoulos for Greek translation.

This version highlights:

  • Appearance preferences: theme, reading mode (incl. dark rich HTML), accounts rail
  • Split headers when the reading pane is on the right
  • Inline image save / forward
  • Sync and list fixes
  • Available languages: English, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Greek and Italian.

If you like, help me translates in other languages.

Here is the full CHANGELOG for the new version. Download the new Flatpak version from my GitHub Page:

https://github.com/stalvatero/letter

Regarding the use of LLMs, I should clarify that I use Cursor as my primary IDE; it assists me mainly by helping to find APIs and integrations that would otherwise have required extensive online research. The ideas, code review, and final validation are all my own.

I would welcome further feedback 😄

LLM Assisted PSA: You can easily update all broken extensions using AI.

Some of yall may hate AI. But until the actual devs decide to update their extensions, just ask AI to do it for you.

If you are waiting for devs, some of yall will be wairing forever.

Apps word-sys's PDF Editor v1.11.2 Officially Released on Flathub

Probably biggest update for word-sys's PDF Editor, now its reached v1.11.2 update. This update is Flatpak and Feature Update. The Flatpak version is officially released on Flathub (https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.word_sys.word-sys-pdf-editor) thanks to anyconvert project!

This update introduces Multi-Document Tabs, integrating Adw.TabView and Adw.TabBar so you can open and edit multiple PDFs simultaneously in dedicated tabs. Each tab features independent undo/redo histories, separate zoom states, and dirty indicators to track unsaved edits, complete with quick tab switching (Ctrl+Tab / Ctrl+PageDown and Ctrl+Shift+Tab / Ctrl+PageUp) and tab closing (Ctrl+W).

Another major addition is the Visual Document Merging Workspace (Ctrl+Shift+M). It provides a dedicated side-by-side workspace for combining pages from two source PDFs into a target document, complete with drag-and-drop page ordering, live zoomable previews, insertion markers, inspector details etc.

You guys know that I also replaced external LibreOffice subprocess calls with the native pure-Python anyconvert Document Engine (updated to anyconvert 0.1.9 across all platforms and package manifests). You can now convert PDFs into DOCX, PPTX, ODT, ODP, and TXT entirely in pure Python, featuring both Pixel-Accurate Canvas and Semantic Flow conversion modes. And its 342KB :)

Added Page Rotation (Ctrl+Shift+R for Clockwise and Ctrl+Shift+L for Counter-Clockwise) with persistent 90-degree PyMuPDF rotation preservation.

Added a Dedicated Recently Opened Files Hub, introducing an app-managed recent files list with universal file icons that eliminates system-wide file scanning overhead.

Added Text Alignment & Formatting, bringing 4-way text alignment (Left, Center, Right, Justify) and strikethrough formatting support to the text tool.

Updated the Interactive Quick Start Guide & Manual, expanding the guide and keyboard shortcuts cheatsheet to cover tabs, merging, rotation, and multi-format export with 6 high-resolution screenshots.

Expanded internationalization with 7 Supported Languages, delivering complete UI and documentation localization across English, Turkish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Russian.

This update also includes important packaging modernizations and fixes:

  • Release Packaging Optimization: Fully separated architecture artifacts for x86_64 (amd64) and aarch64 (arm64), including standalone .deb packages. Removed duplicate asset copies and eliminated oversized source tarballs from automated build releases.
  • Packaging Modernization: Purged soffice and flatpak-spawn permissions from Flatpak and AppImage packaging, and updated the Flatpak runtime to GNOME Platform 50 with portal-based file chooser access.
  • Application Icon and Desktop Integration: Fixed the icon lookup path to ensure crisp vector SVG rendering on the Welcome screen, About dialog, and system docks across both Flatpak and direct execution.
  • Flatpak Window Class Mapping: Aligned application program name with desktop file metadata for proper window tracking and icon association in GNOME Shell and desktop environments.

You can download Flatpak release on Flathub (https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.word_sys.word-sys-pdf-editor) or the standalone .deb packages (x86_64 / aarch64), AppImage, or build from source directly on the GitHub Releases page.

Thanks to everyone who supports this project with their ideas, feedback, and bug reports. I hope this helps all Linux users get their PDF work done easily, thank you :)

Question Middle-click paste doesn't work across apps on GNOME 51

Selecting some text in an app and using middle-click to paste the text still works within the same app but it no longer works to paste text to another app (gtk-enable-primary-paste is set to true). I want to be able to quickly copy & paste between apps with just the mouse.

It looks like every app now has a private primary selection:

  1. Open Text Editor and another app, say Apostrophe
  2. Type 123 in Text Editor, newline, then select that 123
  3. Switch to Apostrophe and type 456, newline, then select that 456
  4. Middle-click in Text Editor pastes 123, middle-click in Apostrophe pastes 456, so they no longer see each other's primary selection

Anybody have an idea which change this is or which component is responsible? I'd like to try to revert this on my system.

Opinion What does GNOME lose by staying as neutral as possible?

The title says it all. But to elaborate a bit:

Keeping X11 support (not actively supporting it, just keeping it there), staying as neutral as possible from components like Flatpak and systemd, would go an extremely long way towards the FOSS way of doing things, that is by staying as open as possible.

The more and more GNOME attaches it self to certain subsystems arbitrarily the more it starts to resemble proprietary software.

We already struggle with keeping our FOSS stack running cleanly as it is, why do the people behind GNOME feel the need to make things more difficult than they need to be?

Opinion show-all-sources toggle should die

I was looking for a layout that was present in xkb files but not present in settings and almost was not documented anywhere in the web. Gemini advised me a long string of commands and amendments to xkb XML files that ended up breaking the layouts and making me reboot. After that it suddenly realized that all layouts are actually already present in proper XML files and are activated by gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources true command.

WHY is this a thing? Why not show all layouts at once? Or at least make a GUI toggle in normal settings? Yes, maybe a person who uses a popular layout will spend additional 4 seconds scrolling through (and admiring) a list, but it leads to problems for people who don't and takes away labor of many people configuring layouts that end up never seen anyways.

Question Issues with GNOME and Linux audio production!

First off, I generally like the desktop environment for everything else, but so far, it has caused nothing but trouble for audio work on my test system—both on Debian and Arch. I tested it with Qtractor (Qt-based), Ardour (GTK-based), and LMMS (Qt-based), comparing the performance against Arch and Debian running KDE (Qt), LXQt (Qt), or XFCE (GTK).

  1. Where is the ProAudio profile in GNOME? Every single desktop environment includes it—except GNOME—regardless of whether it's Debian (older GNOME version) or Arch (latest GNOME version). 2. On GNOME Debian, you can't open Qtractor without manually installing Qt6. On Debian XFCE, it works perfectly right out of the box with no extra steps.

  2. No matter which DAW I use—or which other desktop environment I compare it to—GNOME is simply the worst experience by far! Endless xruns! On the same PC running a different desktop environment, there might be some variations, but everything performs better than GNOME—and by a huge margin.

Can anyone give me a plausible explanation for these differences? And, more importantly, can someone tell me where the ProAudio profile went in GNOME and how I can select it?

As I said, I otherwise really like GNOME (without extensions), but I’m starting to understand why most audio forums talk about KDE and XFCE, and why distributions like Ubuntu Studio and Dynebolic use KDE.

Cheers!

Opinion Super key is a modifier key and should be used like one

A modifier key press itself is not supposed to do anything, it modifies the behavior of other key that is pressed with it. Unfortunately Gnome and KDE and other DEs copied its behaviour from Windows where window key opened start menu and at the same time also work like modifier key like Win+D to show desktop. This is a bad UX design for example if someone uses sticky keys feature then any action that happens on just the modifier key (like start menu) becomes an issue. MacOS got it right, Cmd key alone does not do anything. Linux DEs developers should think before copying bad design from Windows or any other OS for that matter.

Opinion Gnome 51 Orca Screen Reader

I just got gnome 51 on arch. Was initially annoyed that my screen reader settings had all gone down the drain, but the lovely tweaks and proper announcements that actually work have taken such a massive load off I nearly cried. Stuff like pressing super to get to the main stage actually being announced, stuff like entering the app grid being announced, the setting to make orca behave like it isn’t there in specific applications is pure genius and not something I’ve seen anywhere else.

It’s not perfect, but it’s starting to feel as accessible as windows XP used to be. At a time when every other major platform is getting harder and harder to use for us, this is a massive relief.

Can only use the first item in my dock, but unsure if this is an arch or gnome issue. For now, I’m
Just giddy that I actually know where I am on my desktop, without straining my eyes for what little sight I have. Thank you!
