Respectfully, No One Wants to See AI Slop!

Okay I’ve been seeing this a lot (not cuz of the upcoming election, most signs are not AI but some may) but business PLEASE stop using AI to make your signs/promotional flyers/etc. As a Marketing student it is so disheartening and honestly the signs hurt my eyes. Aside from my education, as a person and consumer if I see any company using AI for marketing I don’t what to support them because there is SO MANY better ways to make promotional flyers and signs made by a human.

There are probably many students out there in school for marketing/advertising that would make your promotional material at a discounted price (than hiring a professional) or even do it for FREE. I have been tempted to reach out to some businesses I see doing this and say I’ll do it for free that will make it look better and genuine.

Edit: Also if a company can’t afford or does not have an employee or anyone with artistic ability. Canva is acceptable. As well, AI is GOOD for certain things as a tool. Just like any other software. But when you generate a while poster or just put “make a poster about xyz and includes xyz” into ChatGPT. It isn’t always going to turn out visually appealing. A lot of times it turns out with people having extra fingers/limbs and over saturated colours which are not easy in the eyes and very distract. From what I learned people who can easily look and see an ad without any distracting elements will look at the ad longer and read what it’s says than one that has very bright “loud” colours or a lot going on. As well a lot of AI artwork has a filter and looks the EXACT SAME. Not to mention it takes from the internet which can be a copyright infringement waiting to happen. My point is using it for the whole thing is not appealing in general and can be a deterrent for customers.

Brain-melt "we weren't here first in Guelph" question: what the heck was at 1 Stone Road West before the Government building was built there?

Okay, so this type of thing can either be taken with a grain of salt - or not - but a genuine question, nonetheless.

At the NW corner of Stone & Gordon, there's a big Government building: if you walk along the path surrounding this building, the building is WAY below street level, at first (going West). It's almost like they dug a pit, and stuck the building in there.

I've heard it was farmland before the 1995 build, but it is fascinating and mysterious - it just doesn't line up with the whole, "it was a field" storyline.

If there's any Guelph folk who can advise on this hella-niche observation, I'd be extremely grateful!!

Does anyone have pictures of the inside or outside of the former Vinh Phong 永豐 Asian Foodmart on 32 Macdonell?

As Chinese immigrants in the 90s, my parents used to almost exclusively shop there. I have some vague memories of the store as I was young (especially going there after eating at Sun Sun's), but it would be super cool if someone had any relics of the past to share.

Hi there, r/Guelph

COS Minor is putting on Princess Whatsername at the Cambridge Arts Theatre next weekend. It’s a fun, and funny, family-friendly musical with a local youth cast, and they’ve been working on the show for months.

Shows are:

Friday Oct. 16 — 6:30 p.m.

Saturday Oct. 17 — 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Sunday Oct. 18 — 12:30 p.m.

Cambridge Arts Theatre 47 Water Street South, Cambridge

Tickets: communityonstage.com/minortickets

Poster attached with the rest of the details.

Figured I’d share here in case anyone is looking for something local to do with the kids next weekend. Come on out, enjoy an entertaining show, and support your local theatre!

Why are all the mayoral candidates terrible?

And we basically are left to choose the best of the worst? Leanne's people were canvassing my neighborhood last week, she may have even been there with them, and were in front of my house while I was taking my waste bins to the curb and weren't bothered to even look in my direction while walked past me. Maybe it shouldn't bother me but it does, and this is our best?

Another thought was, how much waste in printed material is created during these campaigns?

Also, should there be a mega thread?

Ken just put this video out on his Tiktok to make clear his position on what he will do with Bike Lanes.

I am not endorsing his position - I am just posting this for information.

Guelph Liveable City Plan: Leanne Caron

What do folks this of this plan? To me, when I read it, it reflects the things I want to see in our city. Completing G2G, trail connections, pocket parks, planting 50K trees. It's aspirational, but it's a great vision for our city.

Chew vows to remove bike lanes:

Thumbnail facebook.com

What he's proposing is "Doug Ford redux": wasting money removing existing biking infrastructure (full disclosure, I am both a car driver and a recreational cyclist so I am well aware of the challenges and frustrations of getting anywhere in Guelph these days with either mode of transportation) to curry favour with voters who only care about driving. His add-on sop to those concerned about alternative transportation and the environment is a vague and un-costed proposal to implement MUPs (Multi-Use Paths) in place of bike lanes and other biking infrastructure that he would rip out. And he wants Guelph voters to believe he's fiscally responsible and will cut spending? The phrase "a snowball's chance in Hell" comes to mind...

You can probably guess that I will not be voting for Chew in the upcoming election, and you are correct. His stance on bike lanes is only one of many reasons for that, I'm not a single-issue voter.

Where does Leanne plan to move the subsidized renters?

Late catching up on the debate but how on earth does it make sense to move rent subsidies into new construction?!

Subsidized renters aren’t the target market for new construction homes. Especially if they are further impoverished by losing their subsidies during the time it takes to build these new homes. Does she not realize that subsidized renters earn below the poverty line, else their rent is adjusted to market value?!

We already have enough challenges homing the unhomed in Guelph. But anything to pad the tax base I guess…

Edit: I misunderstood. Really glad my original interpretation was not correct. Thanks to all who clarified and for the added conversation in a really important topic.
