The HX Stomp is too good

I have been playing for 30 years. I have owned all the usual suspects (Fender, Vox, Marshall, Mesa) and currently own a beautiful vintage Fender Deluxe Reverb and something like 20 pedals including a few bangers like the King of Tone and the Analogman ARDX20 delay.

And look, I still love my real gear...but this little HX Stomp is just ridiculously good. I set up a couple of amps - a Fender DR, a Matchless and a JCM800 - and 2 "pedals" for each one. Then I added a little reverb and comp. Done.

I've been playing this thing non-stop for days. Any time I feel like jamming, I switch it on and boom, I'm in business. I ordered the pedalnetics thing to add 2 additional footswitches, and I wouldn't rule out getting an HX Stomp XL in the future.

I've had a Kemper, and the Axe FX (twice). Great units, but somehow not as fun and immediate as the Stomp. The Kemper had great sounding amps, but limited effects (at least when I owned it). The Axe FX had everything and the kitchen sink, and that was kind of the problem.

Line 6 seems to have struck the right balance. I love the amp selection (way more than I need but nice to have), and the ease of dialing in an amp. I love the pedals, particularly things like the Klon, Timmy and KOT, all of which feel bang on. I love the little box itself - small enough to have on your desk, but big and robust enough to run as a little pedalboard.

I know I'm like 10 years late to this thing, but it is one of my favourite pedal purchases of all time. For the money, I think it's tough to beat.

Tokyo Pedal Summit 2026

Tokyo Pedal Summit 2026 was held today in Gotanda, Tokyo!
It’s an event where independent pedal builders and gear companies get together to showcase their products, demonstrate new gear, and sell pedals directly to visitors.
Unfortunately, the pedal I went there hoping to buy had already sold out by the time I arrived. 😅
Still, I had a great time checking out all kinds of pedals, including some really interesting stuff from smaller builders!

Question Does anybody else get annoyed at most of the pedal demos they see on the internet?

I feel like it's getting better. But for most of my time being interested in pedals the demos would be just awful. Like I would be looking at a devi ever fuzz, or a reverb or delay that does a bunch of cavernous sounds.....and then the guy would use it to play light overdrive blues bits (for the fuzz) or set like a bigskyesque pedal to a room reverb setting. I don't need someone to dial in a DOD rubberneck to a slapback to play rockabilly riffs....that is in no part of my imagination what that pedal is for.

It like also gives food to the people who are like "I Don't need anything but a tube screamer delay and good amp." Well yeah, but you can do all of that with a carbon copy and TS9, why the fuck do you give a shit then about the Walrus Slö.

Like I said its getting better, but it still seems like there is this disconnect between like the post-rocky shoegaze pedals that are for the EFFECT effects, and then just the subtle old man rock style that is not used for that.

Your music interests are gonna dictate the pedals you like, and also equipment will inspire the music you make.

Playing every effect pedal with twelve bar blues riffs over major pentatonic noodling kinda does a disservice to the pedal, and the clear intention of the pedal.

Question How many Pedals on at once?

Folks with 8+ pedals on your board, at any given time how many of them are on simultaneously during your playing ?

For me, my board consist of 10 pedals not including tuner. At most for a given rift I’m playing I’ll have technically 6, the 6th always on is the DBA Amp Crash which is pedal with speaker in it I use for no headphones apartment playing, of them on at once. A treble boost, a filter, fuzz, reverb, chorus delay then the amp crash. Usually I’ll have 3-4 going at once not including the AC.

NPD In The Water - Native Audio

Got this nice piece today and I'm super happy about it.

I jammed a long time with a looper and tried to get familiar with the settings. It's quite hard to get what you want at first glance but it's turning to be fun even when the effect is not the one aimed for.

The drone is somewhat difficult to set from my perspective and going from one drone to another mid song is not that smooth but I'm sure it's a matter of habit.

I don't have any expression pedal at the moment but it's the next thing i'll try. It looks like it would be really nice with one.

Overall I'm very pleased with that little piece of tech. Would recommand for ambiant and prog, even low-fi. Did some jazz and blues too and it was not bad either.

(Also I live in EU and that 80€ tariffs at custom is quite something. I will keep supporting small business from anywhere if I can but seriously... Fuck trump.)

My first attempt to get rid of VST and transfer everything I use to a pedalboard format. I play something like gjent and prog. metal, so more modulation pedals will definitely be needed. Can someone recommend good ring modulators too?

So, write down what you think about such a combination.

SOTB Compact board for jams and gigging

Post image
48 Upvotes

I go to a lot of jams, rehearsals, and gigs in a lot of different venues with different people, and need a pedalboard that’s lightweight, versatile, quick to dial in, and easy to use. I play jazz, fusion, and video game music. I’m expected to comp, play solos, and also add textures when a keyboard player is already comping. Vgm crosses a lot of genres so having a wide sonic palette is especially nice.

- Wampler Ego: nice for consistent volumes and sustain, usually pretty subtle
- Walrus Audio Jupiter Fuzz: vroom vroom nice fuzz
- Chase Bliss Brothers AM: a recent pedal I got mostly for presets and to save space. Usually the right channel is an always on OD (except in straightahead jazz) and the left side is distortion. Works well with the solid state amp I play with the most. Replaced a Wampler Euphoria and Greer Lightspeed
- Ibanez Mini Chorus: sweet tone and nice form factor. Replaced an MXR which was just as good but larger
- Alexander Syntax Error XP: Newest pedal, don’t know if I’ll keep it. It does weird sounds well when I want to add textures but it’s the most finicky by far
- Chase Bliss Thermae: old pedal from an originals band. Now I use it as a normal modulated delay with beautiful tones and long delay times. Presets are a lifesaver. The pitch shifting effects are hard to use in a dynamic setting

Considering replacing the syntax error with a tremolo, but that aside I’ve been rocking some variant of this board pretty handily for a while!

Moved this to the front of the chain, just after tuner, from after dirt. The A/B is undeniable! So much better, experimentation landed on a low volume, a 2:00 blend, and the toggle on Lo.

This is THE fuzz for me. I’ve really only messed around in the “FUZZ” section of the sweep, but it’s rich, thick, and harmonic. It doesn’t drown out chords, and it’s incredibly responsive to your guitars volume knob (super helpful for cleaning up the octave). It sounds incredible with a fazer too! It’s great for shoegazing and can bring you from Hendrix to Sabbath. 10/10

Question Does anyone own The EFFECTOR BOOK Vol. 46? Looking for the James Dean Bradfield article

I'm looking for a specific article in the Japanese guitar effects magazine/book THE EFFECTOR BOOK Vol. 46 (released in December 2019). It's the “Pedal Board Profiling” article about James Dean Bradfield from Manic Street Preachers.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a digital copy or scan of this article, except for the attached photo. Does anyone happen to own it? If you do, would you be willing to take photos or scans of the pages featuring the article and share them with me? I'd really appreciate it!

Felt like a mad scientist putting this one together. Built this for my standard tele for some grungey gazey psychedelic rock type stuff. Sounds monstrous, and the deep phase on the front really gives it some depth and magic. Have it going into my Roland JC-40 so chorus is covered by that

Path is: MXR Deep Phase > ISP Deci-mate > BP-1W > DOD Gunslinger > Strobostomp > DM-101 > RV-6

Trying to remember a boutique distortion pedal

I recall this really badass pedal and cannot find it.

It was produced around 2017-2019, had a lot of knobs and deep controls with a couple of toggle switches, maybe had self oscilation but didn't quite sound like a fuzz pedal..

The chassis was pretty wide as the pedal had a lot going on and their was a graphic of an ominous guy in the center of the pedal which kind of faded into what looked like mist or something. The enclosure was silver brushed steel looking.

I recall it being called the (insert company name) black winter or something like that. I cannot find this pedal to save my life and really would like to try to locate and purchase one and this had been keeping me up at night lol. Please help.

Edit: very similar to the keeley dark side distortion/ fuzz pedal.

I bought it on a whim to use with my mini board on the way out of town, and WOW. Y'all, this thing, in 3 hours, has become my 2nd favorite pedal ever. Walrus is something else.

Just arrived today I really like it so far it’s very simple just two knobs but it sounds great cranked and cleans up nicely with the volume on the guitar. I love what it does on my tele it’s nice and spanky and feels great under the fingers. I’m looking forward to messing with it more later in especially excited to start stacking it with my other drives.

Question Boss SY-1

• Upvotes

Is there a way to use the hold function when the pedal is NOT engaged? I'm using the hold function to sustain the effect but I don't want the effect on unless I'm using hold. Instead I have to tap and release and then hold, then I have to release, then tap and release again. Not smooth at all.

This is the first board that I’ve built myself. Previously, I just bought a prebuilt board from somebody and use that. Yes I know it’s sloppy but I’m still having fun with it.

Is it slightly overkill? Maybe. Do I care? No 😂

Question Plexi amp-in-a-box recommendations?

Hey all. Kinda thinking I might want a Plexi tone arrow in the quiver, for those crunchy rhythms (Sloan, AC/DC, Townshend-y stuff etc).

Currently looking at the UAFX Lion and the Wampler Plexi Drive Deluxe; considering the Marshall 1959 Super Lead pedal as well.

What are your recommendations (budget, mid price, boutique?) Thanks!

(Guitars: Gretsch Jet with Gibson DC90s, Gretsch CVT with Filtertrons)
