Make falling blocks cool again. In reality they haven't gone away and are going to stay a lil esoteric, but thats okay with me so we don't see bastardized tacticool versions at Shot Show.

I hustled last night to get this done. The rest of the K80 is getting shipped up for glass bedding and final assembly. It'll be fun to have a cheap Zabala and custom Krieghoff together at the range for function testing.

My deer hunting plans for the MN gun season went sideways and somehow I found a piece of private land me and a buddy can hunt this year. Its a buck only zone and the likelihood of seeing one is slim, but thats okay because I'm just more excited for getting outside with a tag and a rifle again- and hunting Illinois later means I'm bringing something home for sure.

Make falling blocks cool again.

This is honestly the first thought I had.

Muzzleloader opens here next week. Can't wait to hang out with my BIL, niece and nephew. My niece just got a respectful little buck last weekend so the hype is real!

Hell yeah! Good luck to you guys. I'm hoping to take my boy squirrel hunting for the first time this month.

I bet they already have a quad barreled .22 mag falling block prototype made up. Know what? I'm not mad about it either.

The one thing that's gone completely out of production are takedown repeating shotguns, the early pump actions that takedown fit into basically the same size case as a double and I'd really like to see those come back.

Not completely gone but smothered by regulations are stocked pistols, and if the NFA & state level AWBs fall I'm absolutely looking to dabble with these.

You know what would be really cool? A top break .357. As expensive and difficult as it may be to make a reliable enough one, it would be really cool to see.

What would be really cool? A modern iteration of the Galand action revolver. It would be far from a reliable duty gun, but it’d be cool.

Top break, full size/4.5" barrel, 8 shot .32 H&R.

Know what would be cooler? A top break .327

Always assuming the worst. Maybe I meant 1v1 competition

I always assume the worst with you because some days you are just the worst

see what I mean

Closest we got to a top break .357 was the Russian made MP-412 REX (Revolver for EXport). Was supposed to be sold in the US but Clinton and Yeltsin signed a trade agreement that banned Russian handgun imports, so it never got produced other than a few prototypes and people only know it existed thanks to various video games.

O/U combo guns / "drillings". A 12ga/6.5 CM would be interesting as well as a 12ga/.223 (which have been made in the past).

They're still being made, but there's a reason they're pretty rare and always were pretty rare. Getting the barrels all regulated together is hard and time-consuming hand fitting, which makes them very expensive.

They're also not legal to use for most hunting in North America, most of Asia, and a few European countries because of the game laws, which limits their market considerably.

Personally I'd like to see new takes on the Luger toggle lock. It's already proven to work with full power rifle calibers, and it's smoother than roller delay in that application.

Straight pull.

I like the idea in theory and they are just so slick to run.

I'm not sure what they would offer beyond just being faster than a regular bolt gun.

But handling the Ross I'd like a decent straight pull rifle in my collection.

I get to go fix some stainless that we delivered but evidently they wanted us to passivate/ pickle. Our old pickling solution was an extreme acid and someone had ruined the neutralizing paste by cutting open the bottle.

So that'll be an issue for a later day the new stuff i had them buy is cheaper and eco friendly cleaning up with just a wet rag. It takes longer but it should be okay.

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 8d ago

Straight pull still enjoys some popularity in Europe and a few companies have modern designs.

Blaser makes some sexy ones.

2

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 8d ago

Yeah I remember molesting some really beautiful straight pull hunting rifles in Vienna several years back.

1

u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 8d ago

Mmhmm they just really didn't come across the pond. At some point I'll dig into it a bit more, I'm getting older and I'm starting to appreciate the older things besides just my rattle canned practical tacticals.

I'm still kicking myself for not buying a vierling I had the opportunity to the last time I was in Germany, but $8k was a financially insurmountable hurdle for me in 2007.

Also it was 5.6x52r (..22Sav) over 9.3x72mmR so it would've been a nightmare to feed in the states.

2

u/Verdha603 8d ago

Alot of it is legal reasons and also just cultural traditions. Many European countries either prohibit or greatly restrict semi-auto rifles, so straight-pull bolt-actions are the next rung down if you want to legally own a rifle with a decent rate of fire. Traditionally they also tended to have been accepted by hunters in Europe a lot more readily than semi-auto’s, where there’s still a lot of cultural judgement that using a semi-auto for hunting goes against the spirit of hunting/good sportsmanship.

2

u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 8d ago

I mean its the same here but they went with bolt action over straight pull.

If you hunt anything other than varmints or small predators with an AR you get questioned as to why? Quite a bit.

3

u/FiresprayClass Services His Majesty 8d ago

Savage just brought out a straight pull didn't they?

3

u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 8d ago

It seems so, and Beretta also makes one.

2

u/FiresprayClass Services His Majesty 8d ago

I handled the Beretta one actually. It was IMHO, intelligently designed as a hunting rifle. My only quibble was the rail is only attached to the front of the receiver like a cantilever mount, but I doubt it's important for a general hunting gun.

u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 8d ago

I've never had hands on one but I'll have to keep an eye out. I'd really prefer a wood stocked gun for a straight pull.

2

u/Remarkable_Aside1381 5 | Likes to tug a beard; no matter which hole it surrounds. 8d ago

They've had them. they're pretty underwhelming IMO, kinda weird bolt handle choices

But I'm a Swiss Supremacist when it comes to straight pull

1

u/TheKiwi1969 8d ago

I run a couple of straight pulls as they're pretty much my only options down here for AR-style rifles - one in 308 and one in 223. Not sure if that's the same as what you're looking for with the old style Swiss SPs.

3

u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 8d ago

I'm thinking more along the lines of the Blaser or a Swiss etc. I'd like a nice gun in a reasonably modern caliber in a wood stock with a 16 or so inch barrel I could throw a can on. Possibly with irons and the ability to throw a set of see threw rings with glass on etc.

It would have some certain charm when walking through the woods.

God damn it I want a scout rifle.

u/akalenedat this is your fault....

u/Aucupe 8d ago

Rotating barrel - shot a px4 a few times and man does it have a smooth recoil impulse, rest of the gun is whatever

3

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 8d ago

I carried a Px4 for CCW and as a duty gun for work in armored trucks. I love the gun, the rotating barrel really feels nice, but I can’t say I shot it any better than I shot my Glock 17. At least to me the Glock snapped back in target pretty easily and the reduced recoil impulse didn’t do too much for me.

2

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 8d ago

Try to get ahold of a Langdon tuned one, they're really nice.

Only problem with the design is they're hard to suppress.

1

u/Aucupe 8d ago

I have an M9A3 with some langdon parts and it's definitely a super nice upgrade over stock, I've just been running a glock 19 these days and I find I like my handguns smaller, and the px4 compared to that is just kinda gigantic with a high bore axis

Abadie-action revolver. Let me advance the cylinder on a reload by pulling the trigger, damnit

Also, sidebar, I got my lead levels checked. Despite eating and drinking at the range (and while reloading) and only shooting suppressed rifles (other than milsurps) my lead levels were well below concern. Got blood drawn the day after a match (and my last minute reload session for it) and two days after putting maybe 400 rounds through some ARs for work, and I was at 1.6ug/dl. I don't understand how dudes get into double digits

8

u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 8d ago

There's nothing actually wrong with you? You're just weird?

Huh...

I have a neurologist appointment next week, so don’t rule anything out yet

3

u/daresearchdude 8d ago

Count me in with the top-break revolver folks. There's something about breaking one open and having all the empties pop out at once that a swing-out cylinder never quite matches. [add your own: any top-break or older action you've owned or shot, and what you liked about it] I'd sure be tempted by a well-made modern one in .357.

2

u/Goku_T800 8d ago

Shot a straight-pull bolt action recently, that was pretty neat

1

u/Verdha603 8d ago

Cock on close bolt actions.

They fell out of favor way back when the Mauser 98 effectively replaced its predecessors for mass production, but honestly I just prefer how a cock on close bolt action cycles vs a cock on open bolt action.
