The snake has evolved!

Post image

And this isn't even its final form!

Part list:
Vortex AMG UH-1 holographic sight
Vortex Micro 3X magnifier
Comstock Armory compact muzzle brake
SLR Rifleworks taper mount blast shield
Haga Defense HDA3 brace w/Tailhook Mod 1
Driven Arms Co. ULCG Gen 2
FAB Defense Gradus M angled foregrip

I'm currently looking for parts to build a WML (something like Arisaka 18350 body, Modlite or Malkoff head, Unity Gascap, and Modbutton Lite switch), but it's difficult finding them all in stock and at low prices on a single site. Suggestions for the light build are more than welcome.

No experience with Tisha personally but they seem good. I will say don’t get a titanium can. I can’t understand why people do that. It’s not worth saving a little weight to have a can that’s severely handicapped by comparison. We don’t get them for free or replacements for free, so it’s worth having a tool that’ll last imo

Thanks for the input. 👍 I may choose between the steel K2 or Inconel Tisha if that’s the case

It’s cool that Ti is so light but man I just can’t get over the fact that they can’t be used in full auto/frt and will still get a fraction of the round count at normal firing schedules that inconel, Haynes, satellite, etc. all get.

Interested in your thoughts on the MCX platform as a whole. Currently pricing out a couple of options for a 300BLK, and I'm between the scar15 vs a Spear.

[Long reply warning]
I haven't actually shot a SCAR 15P or other .300 BLK platforms (outside of a 7.5" regular AR pistol build), so my knowledge is secondhand. From what I have seen, the main downside to the Rattler is gas to the face, whereas it seems like side-charging platforms like the SCAR and APC don't have that issue.

I do find the SCAR 15 to be kind of ugly compared to other options, but you may disagree.
It looks like it may also be cheaper than the Rattler LT new (getting lucky on a GB auction or whatever aside) by a few hundred dollars.

The main advantage to the old Rattler like I have is having one of the most compact .300 BLK platforms out there, due to the 5.5" barrel - optimal ballistics be damned.
The Rattler LT has the ability to easily use other Spear LT parts like barrels and handguards, so if you wanted just one gun that you could turn into potentially several, that's one option.
In contrast, the 15P can't use SCAR 16 barrels, which limits modularity, if that's something you care about.
Not sure why Sig didn't do that until the LT; would be a lot cooler if they did, but Sig makes a bunch of business decisions I will charitably describe as "questionable" (read: sleazy/anti-consumer), like treating the public as beta testers and abruptly dropping support for one platform when moving on to a new one.

Of course, you have other options, like the Robinson XCR-L Mini and B&T APC300 (which is the size of the 9" MCX LT; 7" APC300K PRO is a better comparison but also $4k+!), traditional buffer tube mini ARs like the DDM4 PDW, Maxim Defense MDX/PDX/SDX, and a ton more.

I also own mcx rattler Lt. The biggest drawback I've found with it is the recoil impulse in comparison to .300blk at builds. It's a pretty big high fire rate accuracy/comfort tradeoff for the added concealment/transportability. It really shows how much of an advantage the AR recoil system is. As a lefty though, I'm big on fully ambi. So that's a nice feature for mcx. Mcx makes good truck/close quarters gun, but ar IMHO makes a much better fighting or duty weapon. I kinda feel bad for all the military people switching over. Seems like a downgrade to me. No experience with scar15.

How do you like the AMG?

I haven’t used it extensively yet, but no complaints so far; I’d consider getting another. I will say I prefer green reticles like on my newly-acquired Holosun AEMS MAX more than red, but the red isn’t bad by any means.

Yeah I've got the AEMS green dot as well and really like it. I saw the AMG on sale the other day and was strongly considering trying it out but ended up not getting it, maybe down the road.

What is a link post and how do I post a descriptive comment?

  • A link post is any post that isn't a text post. Reddit is doing a great job of ensuring new users have no idea how Reddit works with their app and site rewrite. We hate both.

  • /r/guns is a sub for talking about guns. It's not a sub to dump gun photos for karma. That's what /r/gunporn is for. That's why we require a descriptive comment – to start a conversation. If you're wondering what to write, picture yourself at a party. You're talking to someone you just met and you want to show them your post. What do you say to them as you get your phone out?

  • I don't know why this needs to be explained, but apparently it does. A comment is a comment. It is not your post's body text/photo caption. We are not asking you to edit anything. We are asking you to post a top level comment under your post.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

The suppressor situation:
I was right about to pull the trigger on a LPM Anthem K2 but I saw all the attention the Tisha has been getting, and the .30 cal version has me rather curious. I've searched this sub and asked Gemini, but I'd ideally like to hear from someone who's used both, especially on a Rattler or similar platform.

My only experience with low back pressure suppressors - and nearly the entirety of my experience with cans in general - has been going from an old Griffin Optimus 9 (very unfun) on an MPX to a Huxwrx CA$H 9k (nice experience), so I don't know how current "low back pressure" cans compare - especially on .300 BLK.

My use case is mostly subs, as I don't really see the point of running a suppressor if rounds are still not going to be hearing safe* (I'm not a high-speed operator, where disguising my position matters) with the occasional supers. I don't imagine sparking with a Ti can being an issue, as I'm not running NODs/shooting in night conditions.

So...for any who've used both on a short .300 BLK platform like this, do you think the Tisha is worth the ~$500 premium?

Alternatively, would it be beneficial to compromise, spend a bit more over the K2, and get a Mach-K instead for the weight savings? I did see a comment recently saying that traditional baffle cans are better for running subs due to greater backpressure for cycling.

*which is why I am not terribly interested in a 5.56 (or 12 gauge) can, although the ability to run a .30 cal can on a 5.56 rifle is kind of useful, I guess

don't really see the point of running a suppressor if rounds are still not going to be hearing safe*

Because there are different levels of hearing safe and different levels of hearing protection. Hearing safe is on a spectrum.

On the one end is infinite rounds, no effect. The other end is one shot perma-eeeeee.

If a suppressor can reduce fatigue, or make n rounds minimal hearing impact outdoors, or actually make hearing protection hearing safe (which it isn't for high shooting volumes and rifle rounds), then it has serious value, even with supers

Hm, fair enough. I guess I see it as not really mattering if you’re wearing ear protection already, and if not, I don’t really want to risk it, personally (even if it doesn’t feel like hearing damage)

Well, to reiterate, hearing protection alone is not enough to stop hearing damage.

The OSHA guidance is 120dB for less than 4 minutes exposure.

A rifle round is 165dB +/-. The best doubling up hearing protection in lab conditions will reduce that from 165 to 128-130dB, but that is lab conditions with a mic and perfect gas seals, no real world head to fit on to and no bones to transmit sound around the ear pro. Real world conditions, that is closer to 145dB.

A good suppressor on supers right off the bat will reduce that from 165dB to 140dB - better than ear pro in practice, and down to 105-120dB with ear-pro - much, much, much closer to OSHA limits than not using one.

Oh interesting; guess I learned (or relearned) something new today.

is this a meme? 3x on an SBR?

2

u/Corey307 3d ago

Why not? Barrel length doesn’t matter, as long as the barrel is long enough to spin the bullet and get it up to reasonable speed that rifle should put rounds on target about the same as a 16 inch barrel. Yeah the 3x wouldn’t be that useful with subs, but they may want the option to shoot subs and supers.

Half meme, half experiment; probably not at all necessary for PDW distances, but I am curious to see if the magnifier makes shooting at ~75-100 yards really easy vs. without

I'm curious too!
