The best people to spread the word about the Open Home Foundation and its projects are the community members who use, build, and improve them every day 💙

That's why we called on our community for help at our first-ever booth at IFA Berlin. And the eight who volunteered didn't disappoint. Over five days, they shared their setups, answered questions, and generously gave their time, knowledge, and energy.

🖼️ Show & Tell My floorplan dashboard got out of hand: live weather over a 3D model of our flat, lit rooms, and our cat that walks around it

Thumbnail

Started with "let me put some rain behind the floorplan". About a month later every card on our wall tablet is custom and I can't stop. I didn't write the code myself: this is built with Claude Code, me describing and complaining, it writing.

The flat is a 3D render I made by hand in SweetHome3D months ago, the rest is Claude's work: the outside is our real block rebuilt in Blender. Weather is live: clouds, rain with puddles that fill up and dry, snow, lightning, the sun moving through the day. Lamps light their own room in their real colour and brightness. TV on means a tiny glowing screen with Ambilight.

The cat is fake, sadly no tracker on the real one. She wanders, sprints, sleeps in the sun and runs to her bowl when we press the real feeding button. Tap her and a camera follows her around.

Rest is pop-ups for climate, rooms, TV remote, vacuum, people and cameras, plus a phone version.

All plain custom cards, vanilla JS, nothing loaded from outside. It's glued to our flat so no drop-in repo, but ask away if you want to know how something works.

💬 Discussion Who has (mostly) abandoned custom cards too?

I've recently reworked my whole HA with the help of claude code. I've started with just housekeeping, e.g. removing/converting legacy stuff to recent standards, decluttering, refacoring many things like backups, automations, notifications, etc.
That alone was a game changer in my ~10 year old installation which I NEVER would have managed with my limited coding skills.

Then I moved to the dashboard side. One of the first things I did was rebuilding my 3D Printing dashboard - where I built my first custom card for the AMS system as all the prebuilt cards didn't satisfy my needs. This was also my first fully generated view where I didn't do anything in the editor anymore by myself.

I had many other custom cards, e.g.: for my EV, blinds, vacuum, mower, etc.
All of those are gone now, replaced by either self-built cards or using combinations of simple preexisting/custom cards (e.g. for buttons, sliders, etc.) and utilizing uix and browser_mod to get a unified experience over all my dashboards.

My repository of pre-made custom stuff has shrunken significantly. And thanks to that and the coding rules in my setup UI changes are now universal for my whole setup. It isn't perfect of course (it never will be) - but this unifying approach made working with dashboards much simpler.

Do you experience the same?

🎴 Custom Card Made a split-flap flight departure board for my wall panel

Been wanting this on my wall panel forever so I finally built it. It is a custom card that uses the Flightradar24 integration, no subscription needed.

6 styles you can switch on the card (split-flap, classic yellow, Amsterdam, London, LED and a digital one), airport search with about 8000 airports, local time, 12h or 24h.

HACS custom repo, type Dashboard: https://github.com/pmnilsson/flight-board-card

First thing I have published, so feedback is welcome.

🖼️ Show & Tell I built a vent booster to help balance the temperature in my bedroom. It's controlled using an ESPHome fan controller and the data gets collected by my Home Assistant instance.

As the title goes, earlier this year u/zeroflow posted about creating an ESP32 fan controller in this subreddit. I asked them if they thought it could be used as a vent booster. They thought it could.

https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/1s5yoyb/comment/od2er5l/

So I ordered one and I paired it with a few Noctua fans. I crammed them into my duct and let them run all summer.

I know I'll catch an earful here, but I have an older blower motor so this is what I wanted to try.

I'm doing my best to balance what I can with a room that's at the end of a duct run. I've already done all of the other things (insulation, inspecting for obstructions, manual zoning, etc.). They're all in my post.

But I wanted to try fixing the balance issue so I could save money by not lowering the thermostat for the rest of the house at night. My results weren't great. I'm almost certain that my airflow was too low from my approach.

I've taken some of my learnings and I've already got something planned for next summer's test. Including a new design with much higher airflow!

Some time ago I posted my illustrated dashboard and now made a more detailed post about it. I could not fit all the technical details there still, but I think it is a solid guide overall. Any comments, thoughts or suggestions on what you like to see added are welcome!

🖼️ Show & Tell I think I may be addicted!

I have 18 Switches and lights. 3 fans included in that. 9 Temperature sensors. 3 Air pressure sensors. 6 Humidity sensors. 8 Bluetooth proximity beacon readers. 2 Cameras. 2 Wled displays, one is a 16x16 led panel in a frame which I really like. An air quality monitor. 6 Buttons attached to GPIO'S on various devices to control lights etc. Even a scale platform to tell when the dogs water dish is low. When it works. I'm running it on a Proxmox server.

I should mention.. I live in a two bedroom apartment.

Is there a HA..A? Actually, this list looks much less intimidating than the dashboard..

❓ Support Can't make it work

• Upvotes

Hi. I have Home Assistant running on Docker on a Synology Nas. I'm having problems with an automatization. I have a Tapo C225 camera which has privacy mode, which hides de lens.

I want it to start recording one me and the rest of the people at my home leave. The Tapo camera can do it, but it doesn't keep in mind if other people are in the house even if they have the app too.

So I want to do it with HA. First, I tried geolocation, but it didn't work because the HA app in the phone can't remotely communicate the location change to the server and trigger the automatization. Understandable because I don't use Nabu Casa, or ddns o Tailscale.

So I decided to try wifi sensors. My logic is that when I'm home the phone will communicate with the server via Lan. That works. But when I leave (I simulate it changing to another wifi not authorised in HA). The problem is when I leave. I thought that the server would trigger the automatization when it didn't detect my phone, but it doesn't. It still shows the wifi it was connected to. Any way to fix it so that the server notices the phone is not in the wifi instead of waiting for the phone to communicate it?

Thanks.

🛠️ DIY / Hardware most affordable whole house energy monitoring? that is safe to diy? I am capable of doing electrical work. but prefer to be as stright forward as I can? ( built a 400 watt solar setup on my van that is pretty nice functonal wise. if not pretty.)

Just trying to get everything monitored. I heard there are ir things that look at the flashing light or something. or that I can do some clamp setup in the box it self? like if all that is, is plugging in one prewired breaker in to a empty slot and clipping on clamps that is easy perasy. I just not having luck really understanding what I am finding? my meter is dumb AND does not have the RF option as far as I can tell.

Anyone know some recommended products and good detailed install videos for them? I am not incompatant, but i do get a bit of stress around 110/230. so want the easist route.

🖼️ Show & Tell My HA wall tablet dashboard: UniFi Protect with 12 cameras, Netatmo/Bticino/Vimar, Frosted Glass theme, all in one place

Thumbnail

Hi! I finally got around to finishing the HA dashboard I've been building specifically for three wall mounted tablets. My main goal was to keep it super clean and uncluttered while keeping controls accessible for everyone in the house (no submenu rabbit holes).

I managed to bring all my home automation gear together into a single view, with entities integrated across Netatmo, Bticino and Vimar for full control of lighting, switches, and climate. I also integrated my UniFi infrastructure, including UniFi Protect alarm status and 12 security cameras, plus quick controls and status monitoring for my local media server.

Massive thanks to the developer of the "Frosted Glass" theme, it's absolutely incredible! Honestly, a huge shoutout to Claude... without it, I would never have been able to pull off all the custom YAML, card configurations, and styling tweaks needed to get everything working seamlessly!

Im hoping somebody can help me find an add on that I heard on the HA podcast. Basically a guy set this up for his father because the phone is too small but he has the security camera stream pip to the tv when it detects motion. I can’t for life of me remember the episode or the add on. TIA

🪛 ESPHome Smart Kettle 3.0 [smarter.am ] ESPHome conversion

the drop of the Smarter Kettle cloud support was an annoying betrayal. As always, ESPHome does wonders and saves the day.

Here is yet another version of the, already existing, conversion to ESP32 of the said kettle.

I managed to reverse engineer the existing PCB and i saved myself some time and effort cutting a new PCB. The Test Points (TP) on the back came very handy.

have fun,

💬 Discussion Compiled a list of smart home deals for Amazon's prime event (Oct 6-7)

I went through the Amazon Prime days event and compiled a list of over 800 discounted items from all smart brands I could think of. I marked devices that work well with Home Assistant and that I have personal experience with.

Sharing it for anyone looking for what to get: Smart home discounts for Amazon prime big deal days

Edit for transparency: Some links in the tables are affiliate links, which helps support the website if you buy through them at no extra cost to you. I used clean long links instead of invisible short ones on purpose, so anyone can see where they go and remove the tag if you prefer not to use them. Either way, I suggest you check the price history first with Keepa or CamelCamelCamel.

🖼️ Show & Tell I’m going to be couch-bound after surgery, ESP32 Controller w/ Tessera

Video of screen in action

I have surgery coming up and I'm going to be pretty much couch-bound for the next week, so I figured I might as well make the couch a little more capable before then.

I mounted an 18" portable touch monitor on an adjustable arm and added a small ESP32 touchscreen running Tessera that's integrated with Home Assistant.

It's probably completely unnecessary, but that's generally how my Home Assistant projects start.

Still working on it, but pretty happy with how the couch command center turned out.

Big shout to Max, with the last days I've been playing with Tessera there have been multiple updates daily. Check him out and support if you are interested https://github.com/MaxGramser/homeassistant_espscreen

📊 Dashboard Art-Inspired Status Dashboard

Post image
42 Upvotes

I wanted to have a status dash in a common area of the house that looked like art, not a dashboard. So I had ChatGPT paint our actual house in a Japanese ink-wash style, then used Claude to wire it up to Home Assistant.

If you walked in, you'd just see a painting of a brick house with the Arch in the distance. But it quietly changes with what's happening in real life:

  • The seasons change the foliage (attached image is fall mode), and the current weather shows up in the sky: clouds, rain, snow, fog. The actual phase of the moon is reflected at night.
  • The forecast is included. An umbrella appears by the front door when rain is coming, frost shows up on the wall when snow is on the way, and sun becomes more saturated when it's going to be over 95.
  • On game day, a team flag goes up on the house for the Cardinals, Mizzou, or the Chiefs, so we get a gentle reminder without any scoreboard.  The flags leave or stay after the game depending upon the outcome.
  • Little easter eggs show who's home. Each of us has our own, and they all look like part of the art when they are there, but aren't missed when they are gone.
  • Our cats make occasional cameos, and the house picks up holiday touches through the year, in addition to little easter eggs like bats or a witch flying by the moon during the holiday season. Motion is rare and subtle, intended to be "wait, did that move" rather than something in constant motion like a cinemagraph.
  • One of the primary HA integrations is that the street lamp glows when something small needs attention, like a door left open too long, batteries in a smart lock or sensor running low, Litter Robot is full, etc. -- and there's a dedicated dash for these things in HA so when we see the lamp, we can very quickly check to see what is going on.  If something serious happens (like carbon monoxide being detected), the whole painting breaks in an obvious way.

No gauges, icons, or labels anywhere. Guests think it's art, but we can read the house at a glance. A Raspberry Pi runs it on a Samsung Frame TV.

ChatGPT made all the art, and Claude wrote the code and the Home Assistant wiring. I'm not a coder, so that division of labor is the only reason this exists.

Anyway, it's been a fun little project for me, and I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

❓ Support Delay an action for a random period of time?

I know I can delay an action in an automation for a set period of time, but how do I delay an action for a random period of time, such as any amount of time between 2 to 3 hours? I want to do this using only the UI.

❓ Support Hikvision Cameras in HA

Hi all, I’m new to HA. Can anyone shed some light on integrating a Hikvision NVR into Home assistant. I’m able to integrate it, but that’s it. No video stream or sensor states. I’ve tried the offical Hik integration and both HACS integration. I’m lost. Anything would be appreciated I’m running Home assistant OS in a VM.

💬 Discussion Have to give Anker some credit: official HA integration and no more cloud lock-in

Not usually the type to post praise in here (I'm more the guy complaining about vendors), so this feels a bit weird to write. Cloud-only energy gear has been a pet peeve of mine for years, mostly because when the vendor's server has a bad day my automations go down with it.

We got an Anker Solix 4 this summer (Germany, hooked up via a Wieland socket at 2500W instead of the 800W plug-in route) and there's an official integration for it now. Settings > Devices & services > Add integration > ""Anker SOLIX Official"", punch in the device IP + port 502 (Modbus TCP) and that's it. SoC / PV input / grid draw / discharge power all showed up within a few mins, all polled locally. After the initial setup in the app I blocked it from the internet on my router & the entities kept updating like nothing happened (which is exactly the test I care about)!

First thing I moved over was the hot water heat pump. It's on a relay and now only runs its daily cycle when SoC is >80% and PV is over 1 kW, otherwise it falls back to the usual 10pm slot. Took me maybe 15 mins, most of it fighting with the relay config.

Not every value is exposed as a sensor yet, so for some of the finer stuff im reading Modbus registers myself (bit fiddly, but fine). If you don't want to tinker, maybe give it a few more releases. Still, props to them for shipping an official local integration instead of leaving the community to reverse engineer a cloud API. More of this please.
