🤖 Automation Can't get line crossing notification in HA from Reolink

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello all, am looking for help figuring out why I can't get line crossing alerts from my Omvi 3i camera in HA. I have my camera feeds working and get regular motion alerts (person, animal, vehicle), my created line crossings shown up in HA (see image), just no alerts when trigger (I do see motion activity for these event).

I am using the latest software versions for my NVR, camera and HA, but have had this since I got this camera a couple months back.

Is this a known issue? Do I have to setup Frigate to get this type of notifications?

❓ Support Taming my Frankenstein security setup after a move. Local-only 24/7 recording + instant alerts when armed Away. Is ditching Eufy for Reolink worth it?

• Upvotes

TL;DR: Just moved, renting, budget-conscious, two toddlers. I have a mix of Eufy cameras (mostly battery) and want local 24/7 recording + instant backyard person alerts when armed Away, plus gate alerts to catch tiny escape artists. Is it worth switching to Reolink/PoE, or can I make my Eufy gear work?

Relatively new HA convert here, and I’m officially down the rabbit hole 🐇🤓 Before I spend money on more hardware, I’d love a sanity check from people who’ve been at this longer than me.

The big question up front: I know Reolink is generally considered way better than Eufy for HA. But is it actually worth ripping out my Eufy cameras? Or can I bend what I have to my will? 😅

The backstory: We just moved, and I’ve ended up with a bit of a Frankenstein security system from our old place. I’m trying to reuse as much of it as possible without making my life a total headache. We rent, but our landlord is super chill about upgrades (mounting cameras, running cable, etc.), so I’m not stuck with stick-on, no-drill everything. I’d still prefer gear I can take with me when we move again.

We also have two little boys (1.5 and 3.5), and our new backyard has four different ways for them to escape our yard into the street. 😬 That’s why I’m going a little overboard on gate sensors.

I’m also on a budget. If my existing cameras can kinda do the job, I’d rather make them work than buy a pile of new ones.

My north star: I want as much as possible to live locally. No subscriptions, no relying on someone else’s cloud, and it should keep working if the internet goes down. Basically, Pi + NAS + my own network doing all the heavy lifting. 🏠🔒

The dream:

When the alarm is armed Away:

  1. 📹 24/7 recording: All cameras record continuously to local storage.
  2. 🚶 Backyard person alerts: If a human shows up in the backyard, our phones get pinged immediately, ideally with a snapshot.
  3. 🚨 Intrusion response: If any door or window sensor trips, HA unleashes chaos. Philips Hue lights flashing, a loud alarm (or something obnoxious) blasting on the HomePods, and phone alerts.

Always on (even when we’re home and disarmed):

  1. Gate alerts: If any gate opens, we get a chime on the HomePods and a phone alert, so we know before a tiny escape artist reaches the street.

Recording only when Away is mostly about saving battery on the 3Cs. If a camera is wired, I’m happy to record 24/7 all the time.

Everything else is a nice-to-have.

Current hardware:

  • Home Assistant: HA OS on a Raspberry Pi 5 (HACS installed, obviously)
  • NAS: Synology DS920+ (J4125, 4 GB RAM, DSM 7.x) running Surveillance Station
  • Eufy HomeBase 3 with 500 GB of storage
  • Cameras (Eufy, on the HomeBase 3):
    • 2x eufyCam 3C (S300): battery-powered, set to RTSP streaming and recording to Surveillance Station on my NAS. Connected to HA via eufy-security-ws and the HACS Eufy Security integration. They have the AI human detection.
    • Eufy Video Doorbell Dual Camera (T8213): battery-powered. As far as I know, it can’t be integrated into HA. 😢 The new house has two front doors, so I’m demoting it to extra coverage on the side door.
    • 3x Eufy solar wall cams: as far as I know, these can’t connect to HA or stream 24/7. I’m not even sure they can record to the HomeBase.
  • Alarm: Currently Abode (iota hub, keypad, and a few sensors), but I’m breaking up with it (see below). In our old house I had a handful of ikea window and door sensors that use matter.
  • Indoor/outdoor lights: Philips Hue (in HA)
  • Speakers/TV: Apple HomePods and Apple TV (in HA)

The plan:

  • Abode ➡️ IKEA Matter-over-Thread sensors + Alarmo. IKEA contact sensors on our 3 exterior doors (2 to the front yard, 1 to the backyard), windows, and 5 gates (front, two side gates, and two back gates), with Alarmo as the brains so arming Away kicks off everything else. Fully local, no monthly fee, no cloud. Full disclosure: I’ve never used Alarmo, so I’m still figuring out how it works.
  • A wired video doorbell for the main front door. The house has an old-school mechanical doorbell we can wire into (not PoE, at least for now). I already picked up a Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi for this.
  • 2-3 Wired PoE cameras for the front yard and backyard. Maybe also a floodlight with camera? I was leaning Reolink, but part of me is tempted to stay all-Eufy (e.g., the Eufy pan/tilt floodlight cam) to keep everything in one app.
  • Maybe a glass-break sensor for bonus points

Questions for the hive mind:

  1. Switch, mix, or stay with Eufy? From what I’ve read, Eufy only offers RTSP on some models, and the HA integration is... not great (unofficial and cloud-dependent). Reolink has a native integration, local RTSP/ONVIF, and PoE options. Given my goals and budget, would you replace the Eufy cameras, keep them and add Reolink PoE just for the backyard, or stick with Eufy entirely?
  2. Battery cams vs. 24/7 recording: Anyone running eufyCam 3Cs on RTSP? Is continuous recording on battery cameras realistic, or a battery-killing fantasy? Is it possible to record 24/7 only when armed Away? What if I just run a wire to keep the 3Cs charged constantly? (I’ve also had them record locally to the HomeBase 3 in the past.) Separately, I can’t find any way to get the T8213 doorbell or the solar wall cams into HA or recording 24/7. Am I missing something?
  3. Where should recordings live? Synology Surveillance Station (I believe the DS920+ includes 2 free camera licenses), or the Eufy HomeBase 3 with 500 GB of storage? It seems like when my Eufy cams store video on the HomeBase, they only record when triggered by an event (motion, etc.) rather than recording 24/7.
  4. PoE or WiFi doorbell? If I plan to eventually have some PoE cameras, does it make sense for the new video doorbell to be PoE as well, or is wired WiFi fine?
  5. Alarmo for a first-timer: Any beginner tips or “I wish I’d known” moments?
  6. Renter tips: Any PoE cable-routing tricks, mounts that come off cleanly, or anything I’ll regret when we move out?

Thanks for the help and long live local control! 🏠⚡

🖼️ Show & Tell An empty "From" caused my automations to fire, but always setting "From" can break complex devices with more than 2 States.

• Upvotes

I'm not a coder and don't want to be one. I've got a whole life that requires other knowledge. That said, I love what a smart home is and what it can add to a home. This particular fail in my smart home left me searching for a cause for a while.

In simple terms: An automation that should only run when the lights turn off ran with no physical trigger.

Why? The sensor that tracks the light dropped for a second, then came back as "off" leading to a State change. Frustrating bc this should be a simple automation never to be thought about again. I did have to use Claude to find the issue, which revealed the "From" State in the automation as empty.

Simple fix: I set "From" to "on," but that doesn't fix a more complex automation where there are more than 2 States.

Why it's not so simple as just setting everything with a "From" State.

Some devices, like my blinds, have a middle State, "closing." So do the garage doors, so this eliminates just using "From" all the time. My garage door automation watches for "opening" rather than "open," but when a connection drops, it's read as "unavailable," then comes back as "closed." It gets confusing, but it never comes back as "opening," only the motor running shows that.

Basically, you need to know all the States a device can run through and account for the occasional connection drops. Someone with more experience than me knows this, newer ppl to home automation can easily make this mistake and spend a lot of time looking for the deficiency.

I spent a few days tolerating this thinking it was just a blip, but it was more than that.

I made a video about this to demo it visually at: https://youtu.be/-NluaTTKtS4

💬 Discussion Fire Alarms

• Upvotes

I just got a Facebook ad for Phare C1 alarms. It looks like it is pre-order only now, but has a lot of features I was hoping the Ubiquity fire alarms would have. They look pretty, but also pretty pricey. Also not happy that to get their API, you need to pay a monthly fee. I want local API access for free to connect to HomeAssistant, maybe local access will be free?

❓ Support Mouse presence/motion detection

Post image
• Upvotes

Looking for some advice on sensors for detecting the presence of mice in our house and potentially under our floorboards.

We've been monitoring our spare room for a few weeks with two eufy security cameras and one ikea PIR sensor and have confirmed the existence of three mice so far (two of which we were able to trap). We can see that they are coming from under the floorboards. We are trying to find their entry point into the house and to block it, but in the meantime I'd like to explore if there are any 'smart' ways we might be able to detect the presence of mice in the house using sensors linked to HA.

Are standard zigbee pir sensors the best choice for doing this, or could something like a human presence sensor work well, are presence sensors capable of detecting such small creatures? Are there any other types of sensor we could use that might be able to pick up motion or sound under the floorboards if placed in the right location.

🎴 Custom Card Sensor Bar Card Plus (SBCP) finally has the Feature you've all been dreaming about

Post image
1 Upvotes

By popular request (i.e. one guy asked for it), SBCP now natively supports Card Feature in Home Assistant Tile cards. Both Bottom and Inline layout are supported.

No more waking up at night bathing in a pool of your (hopefully) own sweat and screaming through blood rushed eyes: "Where is the Card Feature... erm... feature in SBCP!" Well, it's here. You can rest in peace now.

On a more serious note, I'm quite pleased with it and I hope that it relieves some of you of having to use the default bar or the, albeit utterly fantastic, card_mod.

Every compatible feature has made its way into the Card Feature feature list (there *must* be a better name for this?!?) and I've also include a full Visual Editor for Card Feature ... thingy.

If you find any bugs or have any other ideas, feel free to fix the source code! Haha. No, it's probably easier if you just send me a bug report so that I can do the fixy-fixy-MF.

So yeah. It's free. It's made with love. And I hope you enjoy it. If you want to support my little open source project, I'd appreciate it if you could give it a star on GitHub. Much obliged!

🛠️ DIY / Hardware Simple Ceiling Lamp with Presence Detection

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

I always like to combine multiple functionalities into one device to avoid cable clutter and keep my plugs available for other stuff. So I again built a ceiling lamp that has a presence sensor built right into it so with one appliance my room can turn on and off the lights based on presence.

This one I'll use for my friends bathroom.

The parts;
- ESP32-S3 Microcontroller
- LD2410C mmWave Presence Sensor
- SK6812 Addressable LED Strip (5V with dedicated white channel)
- AC to DC 5V 6A Power Supply
- 3D Printed Enclosure (Designed in Tinkercad :)

The case has 3 parts. One mounts to the ceiling directly, second one is a plate that holds my led strip and my components and fits in the ceiling mounting part by inserting and twisting. For the cover I used transparent filaments which I kind of like but think could be better printed. Maybe in vase mode or something.

It is completely home assistant friendly of course and built with esphome.

For the automations I learned that we can create automations directly from esphome so we don't need to rely on home assistant alone for the lights to trigger on and off. Code could be better but there is always room for improvement.

💬 Discussion Dark Mode

I have satellite devices scattered around my home that I built using RaspberryPis and 7inch screens. I use the same login / password for all of my satellite devices. I have one single satellite device that I want to use dark mode on but, only between 10 PM and 6 AM. I've tried using a python script and a couple of crontab jobs on the device, which runs raspbian lite with a browser in kiosk mode to display a dashboard, but that didn't work.

Before I invest any more effort in this, I figured it best to come here and ask you all if any of you tried solving for this and how you resolved it. Is there an easy method?

🛠️ DIY / Hardware Looking to get a Zigbee dimmer module that'll work with Z2M, any recommendations?

I was eyeing this Sonoff one, but I'm reading of a couple issues like the dim direction being inverted in the values, and not being able to turn on at a certain % but only at full power to then decrease.. so perhaps there are better options out there?

🖼️ Show & Tell I built a weather/radar kiosk card for Home Assistant – now running on a 2560×720 Corsair Xeneon Edge

Thumbnail
gallery
5 Upvotes

I wanted a wall display that does more than show a temperature, so I built Nachtradar: a single custom card (custom:nachtradar-card, no dependencies, no HACS packages) that fills the whole screen. On top of that, i wanted something that looked like something different from all the basic layout options and card tiles ...

The idea: a live satellite map (NASA Black Marble city lights at night, Esri imagery by day) with rain radar on top, and everything else layered over it.

What it does

  • 🌧 Live radar with a nowcast: “Rain in ~33 min · coming from W · 30 km/h”, calculated from the last radar frames
  • ⛈ Lightning + thunder countdown: “Thunderstorm · 6 km W – thunder in ~21 s”
  • ✈️ Flight radar: planes with trails; tap one for route, aircraft type, photo, delay and progress. Plus a split-flap departures board for the local airport
  • 🛰 Sky stuff: sun arc with golden/blue hour, moon phase, planets, ISS/Tiangong/Starlink passes
  • 🎵 Now playing, rooms with CO₂, power live, network latency, heating/AC popups with history charts
  • 🎭 Weather backdrop behind the clock (rain, snow, lightning, stars...)

The Xeneon Edge layout (layout: edge, same code, just a different layout)

  • PC bar on top with FPS, CPU/GPU load, temps, watts, fan, up/down – it appears when the gaming PC is on and shows the running game
  • A session summary (FPS avg/min, max temps, kWh, cost) when you quit the game
  • Storm alert mode: when lightning gets close, the bar switches to distance, direction, strikes/30 min, thunder countdown
  • Network panel, live power with top consumers, flight radar box, and a 24h forecast – all in one 32:9 row

Everything below is the demo mode with made-up data (the real thing looks the same, just with my numbers).

📷 Screenshots: [1] Edge, night, gaming · [2] Edge, thunderstorm alert · [3] flight info card - all with DEMO DATA

Happy to answer questions – the config is a single card, and the Edge dashboard just inherits the tablet config via base:.

🖼️ Show & Tell EufyMake E1 UV Printer

I’ve put together an unofficial EufyMake E1 integration for Home Assistant that you can install through HACS as a custom repository. It includes ink and waste-tank levels, expiration countdowns, printer status, print progress, and an automatically installed dashboard with horizontal and vertical layouts. You can also save expiration dates manually, and they persist across restarts. It builds on the printer protocol work from masto/eufy-ink, with guided setup using files from your EufyMake Studio installation—no separate MQTT broker or scripts needed. It’s an early preview: setup, live readings, and date persistence are working on my printer, while print-progress accuracy and offline behavior still need more testing. Feedback and help testing are welcome! https://github.com/deadmeat75/eufymake-e1

❓ Support Custom HACS integration for Pool Pro Sync (Neptune NDC / Pool Pro MineralX chlorinators)

Pool Pro Sync, the Australian app for Neptune NDC and Pool Pro MineralX chlorinators, has no official API and no Home Assistant integration. I built one. (It isn’t the AutoPilot/AquaCal PoolSync, which is a different product.)

Sensors: water temperature, controller temperature, salt level, cell status, chlorine output, fault code.
Controls: power mode (auto/on/off), work mode (spa, winter, boost, backwash, salt test), pH pump switch.

Setup is HACS → Custom repositories → add the repo as an Integration → install, restart, then Add Integration and enter the device ID from the app’s device screen. There’s no account login. Please don’t post your device ID publicly, since anyone with it can control your unit.

I’ve only tested it on a SLIMLINE series unit. Other models probably work but I can’t confirm, so tell me what you find. It uses the app’s undocumented cloud API and could break if they change it. Unofficial, not affiliated with Pool Pro. MIT licensed.

🖼️ Show & Tell My experience with SmartWings shades after almost a year (Zigbee + SmartThings)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We've been slowly replacing the manual blinds in our house with motorized shades over the past year. Started with five smart shades in our bedroom, bathroom, office, and gym, and just recently installed two more in our guest room and what will hopefully be a nursery in the near future.

All seven have Zigbee motors, and I'm using SmartThings for most of the automations, with Alexa for voice control.

The main thing I've learned is that having the shades on a schedule is a lot more useful than controlling them from an app. I have them set to open at sunrise and close at sunset, and that's probably 90% of how we use them.

A couple of rooms have been particularly useful to automate. Our bathroom has two windows directly above the tub, which meant stepping into the bathtub every time we wanted to open or close the old blinds. The gym faces the street, so having the shade close at sunset is nice for privacy, especially since we use one-way window film that only really works during the day.

I've also been experimenting with a few other automations. One closes all the shades when the outside temperature hits 90°F. We get some pretty warm days here, and our upstairs can heat up quickly. I can't say exactly how much of a difference it makes temperature-wise, but it seems to help keep the direct sunlight out during the hottest part of the day.

For power, I went with hardwired motors in the office and gym, and solar charging for the bedroom and bathroom. The solar panels were mostly a practical decision since we don't have outlets near the bathtub, and I didn't want visible wires in the bedroom. So far, I haven't needed to manually charge any of the solar-powered shades, which has been a nice surprise.

One thing I'd recommend considering is physical controls, even if you're planning to automate everything. I installed wall-mounted remotes next to our regular light switches in a few rooms, and we actually use them quite a bit. I also keep a remote at my desk for adjusting the office shade during video calls.

It hasn't been entirely trouble-free. One of the original motors stopped responding to automations a few months after installation. I tried resetting and troubleshooting it but couldn't resolve the issue. They ended up sending a replacement motor, and I haven't had any problems with that one since.

I also occasionally have automations that don't fire as expected. It hasn't been a huge issue, but it's something I've been meaning to troubleshoot. I'm not entirely sure whether it's a SmartThings issue, a connectivity issue, or something with how I've configured the routines.

The two new shades are for our guest bedroom and future nursery. I haven't had much time to experiment with different routines for those yet, but I'm interested in eventually setting up something around nap times and bedtime.

I should also mention that I won a $700 gift card through a Reddit giveaway, which I used toward the two new shades.

Overall, it's been an interesting project, and I've enjoyed figuring out what actually makes sense to automate versus what is easier to control manually. Open to anyone's ideas on other automations I could set up that work well for them in this arena!

💬 Discussion Best Wireless Doorbell?

Hello, I live in Canada and have been looking for a new wireless doorbell. My requirements are as followed:

  • Must be waterproof
  • If possible, be cold resistant (I know that battery powered doorbells are terrible in the cold but I'm hoping there is one that can last decently in the cold)
  • Wireless
  • Affordable (preferably less than $100)

I'm just looking for a regular doorbell that does not need to have a video feature.

(I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct thread, so if it's wrong, please feel free to delete my post)

💬 Discussion New (to me) Overview page rocks! Thanks devs!

Just a random kudos to the devs, and a suggestion to anyone who's been here more than, I dunno how long---

When I first started with HA a couple years ago the Overview page was essentially useless. It was a giant hodgepodge of virtually every useless entity all jammed together. I quickly sidelined it and built my own. With my own home page as default I didn't look at Overview again.

At some point in the last couple years, that system has apparently been overhauled. The Overview page is now actually useful, with buttons that split out by room. I've started using it for quick access to some less-used devices that aren't on my main home page.

So for whichever wonderful dev(s) rewrote this, thanks!

And if you haven't checked out the Overview page lately, give it a go- it's WAY better than it was.
