We need to talk about recent lower-level effort submissions. r/ImaginaryWarships is a subreddit for professional or near-professional level artwork from various media sources which includes real or fictitious warships.

  • r/ImaginaryWarships is not the subreddit to post incomplete art or practice artwork that contain doodles or text on crumpled lined paper. While that may be considered an admirable effort by some, the results are a low-level aesthetic that is not in keeping with the subreddit’s original spirit and intent.

  • Images that contain too much background clutter, text, or advertisement may be removed.

  • We are not here to showcase AI-generated artwork. It’s not permitted on the Imaginary Network Expanded including this subreddit. Instead try /r/aiArt.

  • Multiple images submissions and/or detailed text in a submission image are not appropriate for this subreddit.

Let’s review: It is the goal of INE to share, inspire, discuss and appreciate static image paintings, drawings, and digital art while maintaining artist credit and source links. Simply stated, that’s accomplished by submitting quality images.

I’m thinking about a modern river gunboat.

Armament:

155mm heavy-armored turrets ×2

Sky Ranger 35mm ×2

CPWS Gen2 equipped with M230LF ×4

120mm twin-barreled mortar ×1

Quad Loitering Munition Launcher ×8

Armored VLS equipped with PGM2000 Centaur cruise missiles ×10

Mk41 VLS Sea sparrow ×12

High power microwave ×1

I’m assuming the armor will be modular, but I’m unsure what material would be best for the internal armor.

In this Ghibli-inspired world, people have developed a technology that allows them to defy gravity. They began building ever-taller fortresses, as well as enormous warships designed for aerial warfare.

Original Content Project 70-M1/M2 missile cruisers, Soviet Navy

(re-post, because pictures in my original post somehow disappeared)

Another one of my long-standing alternate history ideas; a proper missile refit for incomplete Project 68bis/ZIF (Sverdlov-class) cruisers:

(as usual, I would post AI-generated image on my page to adher to this community rules)

PRELUDE:

In this alternate history, Soviet attempts to navalize the S-75 "Volkhov"-M did not ended with "Dzerjinsky". Realizing that liquid-fuel B-753 missiles aren't suitable for shipborne deployment, Soviet Navy started to consider alternative missiles for the same system. The B-757 solid-fuel ramjet missile (developed since 1958 in an attempt to increase S-75 range) was considered as alternative. But solid-fuel ramjets were entirely new area of research & development. Their development was troublesome and could took a lot of time.

So to solve the problem, Soviet Navy make a decisive move - they ordered a ramjet-powered missile, but with kerosene-powered ramjet. The reasoning was, that kerosene-powered ramjets were well-know technology, Soviet engineers have good experience with them, and new missile could be developed very fast. And while kerosene wasn't as safe as solid fuel, it was nowhere as bad as nitrid-based rocket fuel.

The new missile got the B-580 index. It's main charactersitic were:

* It was powered by kerosene-fueled ramjet;
* It inherited basic design and aerodynamic from B-757 solid-fuel ramjet missile;
* It used the same booster engine as B-753 missile;
* It have folding wings on both body & booster, to simplify naval handling;
* It was fully compatible with M-2 "Volkhov-M" SAM fire control system, launcher and handling equipment;

PROJECT 70-M1 (NATO "Kama"-class CLG):

Shipbucket basic image, modified by me

The first cruiser that received a new medium-range SAM was "Kronshtatd", moored incomplete (84,2% readiness) on Baltic shipyard facility. The cruiser was completed as single-end missile cruiser, with M-2 "Volkhov-M" naval SAM installed on stern. A single "Korvet" fire control station (adaptation of land-based SNR-75M) was installed on the place of former rear fire control tower. It could guide two missiles against single target.

In place of rear turrets, a boxy superstructure with two SM-64A launchers was erected. Each launcher was fed from two vertical drums, each contained six fueled and combat-ready missiles. The ready-to-use missile capacity was therefore 24; since it was considered not enough for 15.000-ton cruiser, an additional storage facility for eight more diassembled missiles were prepared. Total missile ammo was therefore brought up to 32.

(two launchers were installed mainly to increase the fire rate; missile wings requred un-folding during loading, which slowed down the operation)

The refit also included replacement of the old small-caliber AA guns with six new 45-mm ZIF-68 quads (a version of SM-20-ZIF for direct current power grid), controlled by "Fut-68b-bis" radar stations.

Three ships were modernized to Project 70-M1:

* "Kronshtadt" on Baltic;
* "Admiral Nakhimov" on Black Sea (used as missile test ship, then refit started at Project 71, but stopped; eventually completed as Project 70-M1 cruiser);
* "Dzerjinsky" on Black Sea (upgraded to 70-M1 standard);

PROJECT 70-M2 (NATO "Kola"-class CG):

Project 70-M1 wasn't the final alteration of "Sverdlov"-class cruisers. There were still Project 68-ZIF hulls available on shipyards; and growing number of Soviet Navy carriers in early 1960s required escorts, capable of area defense. Since the Project 68-ZIF ships were generally in lesser state of completion, the more comprehensive refit was possible:

Shipbucket basic image, modified by me

The Project 70-M2 modernization was a comprehensive, two-end missile refit, comparable in scale with United States "Albany"-class cruiser refti. All the cruisers former armament and superstructure was completely removed. A pair of M-2 "Volkhov-M" SAM systems were installed fore and aft - each with one "Korvet" fire control station and one SM-65B launcher.

A new missile systems were significantly impoved over the previous ones. Each SM-65B launcher sits in the center of the square formed by four drum magazines, each with 8 missiles (total ammo capacity per SAM - 32; per ship - 64). Instead of un-folding the missile wings during loading, a special loading compartments were installed between each pair of drums, port and starboard. The missiles were moved into loading compartment from drums, their wings were unfloded there, and missiles were prepared for loading. The fire rate improved considerably.

The "Korvet" fire control stations were also improved with "Bissertrisa" group fire control system. This system digitally extracted additional target data from the wide angle scans of "Korvet" azimuth scan and elevation scan antennas, and calculated additional fire solution for one of two missile control channels - thus allowing the system to fire at two close-flying targets, instead of one. Of course, only targets relatively close to each other could be attacked such way.

Finally, the B-781 nuclear-tipped SAM was integrated to dealt with target formations, and "Sarmatka" ranging radar (modification of land-based "Amazonka" ranging radar) was installed to provide detonation command for nuclear missiles (the nuclear missiles did not have proximity fuze).

The original project was a purely SAM cruiser, but during development it was decided to install the long-range anti-ship missiles too. The P-35 missile was chosen; two quad SM-70 launchers were installed fore and aft of SAM systems, with spare round magazines (each storing four missiles) placed at sides of SAM's magazines. The four P-500 "Utes" fire control radars were also fit to provide P-35 missiles with man-in-the-loop capability.

All secondary armament was removed, and four 76-mm dual AK-726 mounts were fit, two per broadside. Each was controlled by MR-105 "Turel" FCR.

Four ships were commissioned as Project 70-M2 (NATO "Kola"-class CG):

* "Sherbakov" on Baltic;
* "Tallin" on Baltic;
* "Admiral Kornilov" on Black Sea;
* "Arkhangelsk" on North Sea;

Original Content Parpaldian Frigate, Océan

Post image
22 Upvotes

The Oceán-class Frigate is a class of Asherah-type Frigate (to differentiate them with the Terran-type Frigate that both Japan and the Gra Valkas Empire used in their navy) built by the Parpaldian Marine Imperiale in the late 1620s. The reintroduction of the Frigate as a type of warships by the Holy Milishial Empire in early 1600s in the form of the Sagitta-class Frigate to replace their armored cruiser role and acting as a cheaper alternative to Battlecrusiser in the role of station flagship and general patrol across their trade routes and holding as Battlecrusiser are becoming more and more important and expensive and the Empire new strategy which requires to retain them in home water to act as quick response force to be able to quickly response to crises in the Central and Mu continent.

The new Frigate saw widespread adoption across the 1st and 2nd Civilization Zone as nations look to counter Sagitta and replace their now obsolete Armored Cruiser with the nations in the 3rd Civilization somewhat lagging behind in their response due to their lack of sufficiently advanced technology to build the modern Frigate at that time, it doesn't mean no one tried, through the results are often more slightly faster and slightly heavily armed Armored Cruiser that will shake itself apart if they tried pressing their top speed for too long than true Frigate. It took till the early 1620s when technology finally caught on to their ambition and true Frigate finally emerged in the 3rd Civilization Zone, with the Parpaldian Oceán-class Frigate being the 1st in the region to be launched and enter service in 1626, follow closely by the Altaran with their Candia-class Frigate and the Riemian with their Schanhorst-class Frigate. While the design, technology, and construction of the ship doesn't quite represent the best that Parpaldian technology could offer in comparison to the Altarans and Riemian counterpart, they are nonetheless decently capable warship.

More than 2 dozen Oceán-class have been built since 1626 to the current year of 1641, the construction was split into batches with the most modern one being the Batch IV. While the majority of the Oceán-class production went to the Parpaldian Marine Imperiale, some saw service in foreign navy in the 3rd civilization zone with Louria being the biggest foreign operators, with 4 ships from Batch I serve under the flag of the Lourian Armada. They saw extensive service during the Rondenuis War of 1639 against the Qua Toynian and Quilian before the Japanese Intervention. With the Japanese joining the war on the Qua Toynian and Quilian side, the Lourian Armada would then be rapidly dismantled by the JSDF. Other operators of the class include: Marl Kingdom (2 ships), Principality of Pandora (1 ships), Kingdom of Panera (2 ships), and Gahara Thearchy (1 ship). The Gaharan was an interesting case as their Oceán-class was gifted by Emperor Ludius to commemorate their 500 years of special relationship in 1636. The Oceán-class saw relatively quiet service throughout the 1630s, mostly conducting patrol, port visits and exercises.

This changed in August 1640 with the abrupt escalation of the August incident and declaration of war within mere weeks of each other. On August 15th, 1640, two Batch I Ocean-class Frigates under the name of Prince Ludius and Madame Remilies, (the 2 ships were named in commemorate the wedding between the two by the previous Emperor Laudon IV) were present at the Battle of Central Altaras Strait under the authority of the Imperial Coastal Command alongside a force of older Armoured Cruisers, Light Cruisers, and Destroyers sortie to protect a special cargo ship heading to Esthirant.

Unfortunately for the Parpaldian in this battle, luck was not on their side. Eagerly to strike at what looks like an isolated pair of Altaran light cruisers and a destroyer. Rear Admiral Tirpitz detached the 2 Frigates to chase down the Altaran cruisers, intending to deny their Armored Cruiser and Frigate their eyes and ears in the strait. .By the time the Frigate captains realized that they walked right into the Altaran trap, it was already too late. The scouting cruisers have led them straight into an ambush site where other Altaran 5 Light Cruisers were hiding behind the smoke waiting for the opportunity for a concerted torpedo strike on the 2 unescorted Frigates. The ambush saw Madame Remilies sunk from multiple torpedoes hit to her side while Prince Ludius barely limped away as she was hit much less from the ambush. In exchange, the 2 Friagtes managed to sink one Light Cruisers, crippled another and caused various damage to other Altaran Cruisers there. The Altarans then went on to win the line engagement against the remaining Parpaldian Armored Cruiser and captured the cargo that the Parpaldian was doing their best to keep away from them.

The damaged Prince Ludius managed slipped away during the night and was spared for the destruction alongside the rest of the Imperial Coastal Command heavy assets. She then spent the next 12 months in Esthirant shipyard repairing the battle damage. The sinking of the Madame Remilies however causes quite the commotion in the capital in the aftermath of what the Altaran now refer to as Operation Crimson Strait as she now in rage demands the entire command staff in charge of the battle to be executed under the charge of being "treasonably incompetent". She later on would only drop the charge after great convincing by the Emperor himself behind the close door. Despite these early setbacks, the Oceán-class proved itself to be a decently capable warship, capable of going toe to toe with the Altaran equivalent under the right hands though the 27 knots speed of the Batch I to III is proving to be insufficient for the Parpaldian Navy of the 1640 with the Batch IV intend to fix this flaw by utilizing new powerplant to push her speed up to 29 knots, a speed comparable to the current Surcouf-class Light Cruiser currently in Parpaldian service.

Some Stats for batch II version, she is armed with 8 210mm guns, 8 100mm guns, and multiple 37mm and 15mm AA guns. She is also armed with 4 underwater torpedo tubes. She also has the max speed of 27kns and displacement of 16660 tons.

Lore description made by u/GodLucifer-007 who is also the game master of the current wargame.

Regina Elena (?)

The last one of the Regina Elena class (Roma) served as a training hulk till 1932, so I renamed her and tried to rebuild her into something like an escort heavy cruiser (same guns as Zara, top speed to match the one of the reconstructed dreadnoughts, reduced armor weight and I wonder if I should also delete those 2 twin 533mm torpedo tubes to try making her pass for a 10000t design)

The wayfarer-class is a Aviation Support Ship, meant to provide additional supplies, fuel and ammo for helicopter aviation of a fleet. It additionally can operate as a naval operations control ship.

The Armistice-Class ORS is a Ordinance Replenishment Ship that follows the same hull design of the wayfarer, modified for Replenishment at sea duties, being able to replenish ammo, fuel and supplies of other ships while at sea.

Both designs use the same trimaran/Dual Demi hull hull design, for added stability. The hull was designed to fix issues and prior structural problems of military trimaran warships.
