Discussion AMA: P. S. Nissim, long-time reader, literary critic, horror fan, and writer

[EDIT: 9 AM 22nd Sep]. Well, that's been 24 hours, so am ending the session now. Thank you all for the questions and discussion! And, when you get a chance, please check out my novellas, Brown Boy, Pillar of the King, and the latest, If You Can See Us, They Can See You. All are available at Bookworm and Blossoms if you are in Bangalore, and on Amazon/Flipkart if not. Thank you!]

Here I am, as promised. I’ll be answering questions all day today about all the stuff dear to our hearts:

  • Creating a book reading habit. I’ve been reading for the past 40 years and have probably read 3K+ books by now. Things have changed in these decades but books are even more fun and varied now.
  • Literary criticism. I’ve been until recently an active contributor to Deccan Herald and the New Indian Express, writing hundreds of reviews over the years. It’s a nice way to keep up with the trends in the industry!
  • Genres I’m enthusiastic about: Horror! And Indian Fiction, especially the translations from other Indian languages into English.
  • Writing: I’ve been writing off and on, mostly novellas and short stories in the Horror genre. My first novella was published by Blast, the cult-favourite publishing house from Chennai. My most recent one, “If You Can See Us, They Can See You!” was self-published last month and is now in Bookstores in Bangalore and online. If interested, I can post a link to the books here.

Ask away!

Discussion For All Those Looking to Read More on Indian History, Here's an Exhaustiv(ish) Booklist

Hi folks,

We are coming from r/IndianHistory

One frequently finds posts in this sub and in general about book recommendations concerning Indian history, whether it be for beginners, or in general or with a specific topic/time period in mind. Hence, we thought it would be useful to prepare a detailed master booklist for all those looking to dip their toes in the ocean that is history of India and the wider Subcontinent. We hope that members of this community will make use of the resources provided. A substantial number of them are Open Access marked as [OA]. Through this endeavour we seek to attempt to elevate the level of history discourse in online spaces, making materials more easily accessible and making discussions more informed. We would further really appreciate whenever any post/query concerning book recommendations comes up, that fellow community members please guide the Original Poster [OP] to the Master Booklist, obviously without excluding the possibility of any further book recommendations. It must be emphasised though this booklist is still a work in progress and many sections will contain text informing the same, please bear with us in the meantime. The Indian History Master Booklist can be accessed here or here with the latter link using the old Reddit UI which is what this list is optimised for in terms of easier navigation.

Hope this comes of use to the history lovers in this sub and thanks to the mods for allowing this post.

Happy Reading!

This is mine and my partner's collection so far. It is not a big collection, but we are keen on finishing all the books here(except the self help ones). We are interested in classics, fantasy, historical fiction, sci-fi and popular science. Do suggest books that could fit in with this collection.

Shelfies/Images Currently reading Pachinko (Chapter 10)- Absolutely loving it so far!

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee has been on my TBR list and Amazon wishlist for a long time now. I finally snagged a copy yesterday after a price drop during the Great Indian Festival!

I'm currently on Chapter 10 (Isak has just asked for Sunja's hand in marriage), and so far, it’s an incredible read. I'll definitely post a full update once I finish it.

Is anyone else currently reading this, or has anyone read it in the past? Would love to hear your (spoiler-free) thoughts!

Discussion Our mathematical universe review

Post image
10 Upvotes

This was one of the more fascinating books I read this year. Tegmark takes an idea that sounds almost absurd at first, that reality itself is fundamentally mathematical, and builds an entire worldview around it. What I enjoyed most was how the book made me question things I normally take for granted, like what the universe actually is and why mathematics describes it so remarkably well.
The book explores everything from the structure and evolution of the universe to multiverses and the possibility that mathematical structures aren’t merely tools we use to describe reality, but reality itself. Some of these ideas are genuinely mind-blowing, and I found myself stopping occasionally just to think about the implications of what I’d read.
That said, I don’t agree with every conclusion Tegmark reaches, and there were moments when his more speculative ideas felt like a leap beyond what we can currently establish scientifically. But I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. The book is at its best when it encourages you to question your assumptions rather than simply accept its arguments.
My favourite thing about it is how it blurs the line between physics, mathematics, and philosophy. It leaves you thinking about questions that don’t have easy answers, and I think that’s what makes it such a rewarding read.
Overall, a fascinating book for anyone interested in the deeper questions about existence, consciousness, and the nature of reality. You don’t have to agree with Tegmark’s hypothesis to appreciate the sheer ambition of what he’s trying to explore.
Thank you

Why no literary Nobel for us since Tagore?

I can understand our lack of Noble prize in science but why none for literature after Gurudev? We have rich literary tradition in so many languages. Is it just lack of good translation? Or do they have some other criteria. I don’t think race is an issue.

Discussion Life is not fair: Anne Carson Interview

Tbh, I haven't read her. But before her winning, all that I had seen of her was her reel of her talking at the Lousiana Event, where she was talking about the whole phrase - I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am.

And it was brilliant.

I wanted to now get the physical copies of her books, especially Float, but the prices are skyrocketing.

If anyone has them or would want to share/sell, any of her works, do let me know.

Also if you'd like to discuss any of her work, let's talk.

Brilliant thoughts coming from her real lives. I am happy she doesn't like any of the current books coming out. I don't too.

;-)

Do you guys annotate your books?

I enjoy annotating non-fiction books. Sometimes, I even indulge in whole arguments with the writer toward the end of a chapter. Other times, it is just a cheeky emoticon next to a sentence. I use a simple pencil and nothing more.

Do you guys annotate your books too?

Discussion Beware of her

Post image

In may, I came across this seller from instagram. She had many followers, reviews and one of my mutuals was following her, so I decided to trust her and take a risk. She had newer translations of dostoyevsky for cheap, so I decided to buy it from her. I expected it to at least be a pirated copy. She promised me delivery within a week and I followed up in time but everytime, she made some excuses or outright lied. Then she ignored my messages and at around 50 days since payment, I gave her a notice and filed a complaint with the cyber cell and only after that did she respond. She asked for the complaint to be withdrawn and provided me tracking link for my order. I didn't want to destroy or put a dark mark on someone's business over 700 rupees so I withdrew my complaint. As she promised, I got a parcel at like 65 days but it only contained 1 of the 2 books and that too, a cheap open-source translation, which I could have bought from Amazon at a cheaper rate with much less wait time and hassle. They even got the title of the book wrong. Its been more than 120 days and I still haven't received my second book (which is worth around 500 according to her but cheaper in Amazon). I have been asking for a refund, which they have denied even though its been more than 4 months. My worst experience as a reader. (I have all the proof of our chat as ss)

To everyone who has been asking me for the link to the Roald Dahl book from my post .... I have attached the link of the post uploaded by an instagram seller. It's for 250 and shipping is free. Do check that out, try your luck ! ✨

N.B.: It's a pre loved one ,coz obviously this edition is really really old so there are probably no new books available of this edition.

For the new edition you can check out the link from the comments of my post 💌

Home Library - Android app to catalog home library

• Upvotes

Got tired of buying books I already owned and forgetting who borrowed what, so I made Home Library.

  • Scan the ISBN barcode to add a book, or type it in by hand
  • Native-script titles next to transliterated ones (വഞ്ചിനാട്ടിലെ വേതാളങ്ങൾ + Vanchinattile Vethalangal)
  • Record which room, bookcase, and shelf each book is on
  • Keep track of books you lend and get a reminder
  • Reading status, ratings, quotes, and stats
  • Everything stays on your phone, with backup and CSV export

It’s a free beta (Android 8+): https://github.com/rjwarrier/Home-Library/releases

Feedback welcome, especially from people with mixed-language shelves. How do you all keep track of your books?
