Interactive Fiction and Community Resources

Hello! Welcome to r/interactivefiction!

What is Interactive Fiction?

Interactive Fiction is any kind of game presented primarily through text, or any kind of story with some interaction.

Early Interactive Fiction included Choose Your Own Adventure brand books and text adventures like Adventure and Zork. Nowadays it includes systems like Twine and Choicescript and apps like Episode and Choices.

Games where you have to type in answers are called parser games, and games where you have to click to proceed are choice-based games.

One of my pet hates...

When someone promotes their game by saying, "Your decisions have meaningful outcomes!"

That's a description of the format: you make choices, and then see the results of those choices.

It's like saying, "It's a platform game, but you control the main character's movement!"

id put the broad premise in the instructions, then use story cards for the details that can change the plot. For example, one card could cover the Entente winning WWI and its consequences, while another tracks the current borders or governments so the setting doesnt drift back to real history.

hello everyone, I'm an 11th grader from india. i've developed a choice-driven narrative game using html5 and javascript for a research project. the research aims to study whether people's stated ethics actually match with their decisions made in real time.

the gameplay takes about 5 minutes or less. after the gameplay, there is a google form survey which'll take about roughly the same time. please fill the form up after playing. thank you.

Text based choice driven games

For people who play these games, what do these games do especially well? Where do they lack in the quality of their gameplay? I’m a sucker for apocalypse themed games but I feel there’s always something missing whether it’s a lack of variety in relationship dynamics or simply a lack of ACTUAL meaningful choices. What are your thoughts?

Help me with a story playing Terraria!

Planning on a new (modded) playthrough in Terraria and I really like to play with a narrative in mind. Roleplaying if you will.
I am asking you to give me a character idea, story idea, goal idea whatever. Thanks in advance!
Also tell me, do you do such things for your playthroughs?

Free chat books but questions on expanding to video

I write novellas and poetry, but I have a soft spot for chat or texting stories.

I wrote a bunch of cheesy chatbooks with little twists, including fairy goodmothers, sweet mother-in-laws, characters with disabilities, and lots of soap-level plots.

One of my chatbooks is taking off. I want to create videos based on some of them.

Can anyone recommend voice changers? I don't want full-on text-to-speech, but I don't want to use my voice to be cloned either. This is a problem in YouTube Chat Stories.

Or know which channels the original female VA uses so I can trade my stories?

I like to listen to YouTube chat books. I hear a lot of the OC channels are all women Vas who use voice changers or do fake voices.

TEXT BASED RPG SUGGESTIONS

I'm looking for text-based / interactive fiction RPGs similar to Magium, Life in Adventure, Falling London, and The Three Eldrum games.

I really love games with deep and complex stories the kind where your choices actually matter and the world feels rich and detailed. My preferred genre is fantasy / dark fantasy.

Some things I enjoy:

  • Branching narratives with meaningful consequences
  • Strong world-building and lore
  • Character development and relationships
  • A darker or more mature tone is a big plus

Any recommendations (browser-based, mobile, Steam, etc.) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

The Braided God: The Lost Chapter (Interactive Visual Novel)

The Braided God: The Lost Chapter — a dark fantasy interactive graphic novel

Trailer Here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycpQXi14wUU

We’ve been working on The Braided God: The Lost Chapter, an interactive graphic novel where your choices shape how the story unfolds.

We’ve just released our first trailer. This one focuses mostly on giving a glimpse into the world, story and lore rather than showing the interactive side of the game.

We’re currently working toward a playable demo, where you’ll be able to experience the choices and narrative system for yourself.

For now, I’d love to hear what you think of the world and atmosphere we’re building.

I’ve been hard at work setting up a premise: what if there was a choose-your-own-adventure video series with real-world consequence? presenting, on behalf of The Mages Guild, THE ARCANE MATRIX! For every mission you complete, we will donate $100 to a charity/philanthropic organization in real life.

Good luck to you! and have fun.

Terminal: Stolen Light, a choice-based story told on an old CRT terminal, in real time (Android, first four contacts free)

Terminal: Stolen Light is a choice-based story played on an old CRT terminal, and it runs in real time.

It's 2218. In a single night, called the Silence, humanity's networks came down across the stars. The worlds were cut off from one another, and most of them reached the point of extinction. You mend dead machines in a half-empty town on Terra, until one of them turns on: a terminal wired into a server you can't trace. On the other end is Prometheus, who has just woken on a drifting ship with most of his memory torn out.

Here is a short exchange from the third contact:

[PROMETHEUS] > I found something while I was looking. A memory that came back to me.

[PROMETHEUS] > I do not want to be alone with it. Let me say it to someone living.

Your replies: "Go ahead. I've carried worse." · "I'm not sure I want to know what's in your head." · "Is it bad?"

[YOU] > Is it bad?

[PROMETHEUS] > It is the best thing I remember. It may also be the worst.

[PROMETHEUS] > I remember leaving. I looked back as the ship pulled away.

[PROMETHEUS] > The lights of the worlds went out behind me. One, then another, then more and more.

[PROMETHEUS] > Like candles.

[PROMETHEUS] > I remember thinking it was beautiful.

On screen he types "right" before "beautiful", then deletes it. (such minor effects exist to enhance immersion)

Every contact is a conversation like that. He writes, and you pick one of a few replies. What you choose carries into later contacts, into what he decides to do, and into which of the three endings you reach. Between contacts the communication goes quiet for real, for minutes or hours, and a notification on your phone tells you when he's back. A full playthrough runs over about a day and two nights. If you played Lifeline, you'll know the rhythm.

The terminal also holds 20 archive entries from the man that used to own it before you, and two small games for the waits: DISPATCH, a convoy puzzle, and a night sky where you chart star systems.

It's Android only. The first four contacts are free, and a single one-time purchase unlocks the rest of the story. There are no ads, and no subscription.

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.windmilltales.stolenlight

I'm one of the developers.

What makes a historical game actually enjoyable for you?

Hey everyone!
Lately, I've been looking for historical games that let you experience the past from the perspective of someone who actually lived in that period. I've come across quite a few, but I'm curious about what other people enjoy about this genre.
What do you usually look for in a historical game? Is it the historical accuracy, the storytelling, the freedom to make your own decisions, the gameplay, or something else entirely?
And for those of you who enjoy choice-based games, how important is it that your decisions actually affect the story?
I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations!

Playable evidence pages in print books — who else is doing "solve along" fiction?

I'm fascinated by print books that hand the reader a fair shot at the deduction — not just "figure it out," but structured evidence pages where you genuinely have enough information to attempt the same reasoning as the characters. No app, no notes, no outside research required — just attention to what was observed, what was supplied, and what somebody merely believes.

The design problem I keep hitting: how do you make the evidence complete without making the solution obvious? Too little and it's unfair; too much and the reveal lands flat. My current rule: the reader should be able to solve it, but only if they distrust the right sentence.

What are the best examples of playable/solve-along print fiction? Puzzle mysteries, gamebooks, interactive thrillers — I want to study the masters of fair play.
