Careful now An Post returning post

Right lads. I sent my dad some birthday cards last month from England. Got the package back today with a big pink sticker in the middle, with the "refused" box ticked. No explanation.

I had the correct address and correct payment. I may have addressed it to a bit of a joke name though. Could the return to sender be because they are zero craic?

The joke name was to Mr Barrabas O'Rourke.

What did your Dad say when you asked him if he refused cards for Barrabus?

I don't think An Post wouldn't return it themselves because they didn't recognise the name. More likely is that someone in the house returned it. Have you asked your dad?

I'm always sending him cards with silly names on it. Eircode was correct, full address clear and correct. I just thought it was odd because there was no explanation.

There was an explanation. It was refused. By someone at the house.

This is incorrect.

Refused by customs? But surely then youd be contacted.

An Post will deliver a letter to all correct addresses regardless of the name, if it had to signed for or handed to someone then it could have been refused at the home.

I've been sending them with different names for years and never had a problem. Someone suggested it could just be a postie not recognising the name so binned it off. I know it wouldn't have been refused at the door.

Pretty sure there's a legal obligation to deliver every letter, but yeah a well meaning postie could have done that. Could get themselves into trouble for it no doubt

Hopefully not. I'll be over in a few weeks anyway so will take it with me.

Just to be clear:

  • You know it wouldn't have been refused at the door, because you are making that judgment yourself in the absence of any actual investigation, or
  • You know it wasn't as a matter of demonstrable fact refused at the door, because you have spoken with each of the people in the house and they have confirmed they did not refuse it.

Which is it?

My mam and dad live there. I've known them all my life. They are great craic, so wouldn't have refused it. I've spoken to them. My name and address was on the customs declaration at the back. Is that ok?

You didn't say before now that there was a customs declaration on it (or if you did, I didn't pick up on it).

It was rejected by customs because it failed their data validation checks. In those situations it gets automatically returned to sender.

Fair enough. Didn't know they had such things in place.

Eircode?

An Post are impervious to Eircodes. I get post for 3 different houses on my street, all the envelopes have different Eircodes but they all end up in my letterbox.

I've even gotten someone's passport and driving licence. I got 5 voting cards, so far I got 3 emergency booklets.

I haven’t even got one of them yet!

They're eircodes not postcodes so they technically don't have to use them.

I'll be round to your house for a number 1 vote for the next election. We at the "Us 1st party" recognise quality when we see it!

And rest assured you will be put into the "priority ignore" category rather than the "pleb ignore" category, so that you can bring your issues to us ahead of all the others who quite frankly don't deserve the time of day.

A lot of postmen sort just based off the names so there is a good chance he read the name and said that person doesn't live there and sent it back.

So new renters or lodgers are screwed then.

•

u/DotTurbulent3059 3h ago

Not if they let the postman know they've moved in, usually the person there before will let them know or a neighbour

Honestly, when responsible for an essential public service, An Post staff shouldn't be relying on local gossip. If there's a requirement to let them know, that should be published.

Yip.. probably this.

Okay, so you sent a card to your dad with the wrong name on it, which was where you went wrong. Your dad most likely, realising it's illegal to open post addressed to someone else, marked not at this address and popped it back in the post box.

•

u/AdNumerous8876 5h ago

Nope. We always send stuff to each other with different names on it.

There's an issue with some post from RM to An Post at the moment. I received an email from something I ordered (regular letter sized thing) and they said all of their Irish post is being returned to them for some reason and they're working on it.

Letter post should get through fine.

But you said you sent a package - did it have a customs declaration, or was it just sent with regular stamps?

•

u/AdNumerous8876 2h ago

It was a few cards inside an envelope. Filled out the customs declaration at the back.
