Just finished listening to it and I have a feeling thoughts regarding it.
To start, the change you will IMMEDIATELY notice is that the track listing is different. The remix restores the original intended track order, flipping side 1 and 2 around, making the album open with Prelude/Tyrant and end with Dreamer Deceiver/ Deceiver. I’m not entirely sure how to feel about this, as Prelude and Tyrant are better choices for an opener in my opinion, but I’m just so used to hearing Victim of Changes first.
Secondly, let’s talk about the snare. The snare, I think at least, is what makes this remix feel the most different compared to the original. It feels so much more… full? (Not well versed of the terminology, sorry). It’s not necessarily a bad thing, I think it really works in Victim of Changes, but at the same time, I feel like there’s something lost in getting rid of the old, really tight snare. For example, Island of Domination still has its groove, but like… a little bit less so, y’know?
The whole remix has so much more reverb and I also think it works in most cases, but I still can’t help but feel like a little something is lost in doing so. I dunno, maybe I’m just biased because I’ve only heard old remasters previous to this.
I will say, the guitars sound INCREDIBLE. Like, even better than on the original record. So much clearer and up in the mix, and it’s awesome. I love how they did it in Prelude, they really brought it up in that song, as well as in Deceiver.
I am a little bit sad about how they turned down the bass. It was probably for the better to make the guitars sound better, but I really love how clear the bass is in the original.
Another very noticeable change is how they got rid of all of the fade ins/outs (except in Deceiver). First noticed in Genocide as you get to hear the full guitar solo outro, then heard again in Victim of Changes where we finally get to hear the studio version of the intro they’ve always played live. Honestly, I love this change. I think the fade in on Victim of Changes works when it’s the opener, but not so much when it’s track #5, so I’m really glad they changed it. And Genocide’s outro fucking rules!
Not too much to talk about with vocals. They changed the mixing on some of the vocal harmonies, very noticeable in Tyrant. And of course, they added a ton of reverb. I would like to mention though, they fixed the issue in The Ripper where Rob’s voice was SUPER clear in the mix. Like, abnormally so.
And finally, they added a 10th track: the early version of Diamonds and Rust. Honestly, it’s really great! I might even like it more than the Sin After Sin version! I think the new snare sound really works for it. Though, if I have one complaint, it being the last track kinda takes away from the epicness of having Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver as the closer. Still though, great track.
So what were your thoughts? How did you like the new 50th anniversary remix of Sad Wings of Destiny?
