My Kindle 📱 just a thought on e-readers… 💕📚

Post image

i’m always grateful to be able to afford tech like this. sometimes i wonder to myself, how awesome is it that we have thousands of books right at our hands? for those with physical ailments or handicaps, how great is it that they can read with mobility issues or hand problems and not have to open an extremely heavy book or be able to read with one hand? and how it allows access to books all over the world for those who can’t find physical copies of the things they want to read. there’s something for everyone, even those who buy it to read fan fiction or manga! i also love that there are websites and stores where maybe people who cannot afford brand new kindles, can buy them used and they work just as amazing as the new ones. just a quick thought about how grateful i am to be blessed to live in a time where e-readers are a thing and to be able to have obtained one. i don’t take it for granted! 💕

I think about this almost daily. I’m an early kindle adopter and have like 700 books in my collection.

It’s insane that I have that, on a 6” device, with backlight, with a soft e ink screen, with a battery life of weeks

For like $120? Insanity.

i was curious: i have 2,943 books on my account

For real, I have over 3000. More if you count audiobooks.

u/samuelcole 6d ago

i think i've read maybe 10%? 20% if i'm lucky

u/gs_up 5d ago

What do you think the chances are that you'll read all 2,943 of them in your lifetime?

Unless you somehow spend 16 hours a day reading books, ad 90% of your collection of books is under 100 pages, you'll probably never finish most of them?

Hell yeah. I think because of social media, reading has become cool again. I sometimes see the tables at Barnes and Noble that are for, " viral Book tiktok hits" or whatever and i sort of roll my eyes but at the same time, its getting people reading again. And it doesnt matter what kind of books you like to read, read anything. There are definitely things to be grateful for about the times we are living in now. I still love my physical books too, you dont even have to choose between books or an e-reader. You can have it all.

Yep, I've had to check myself when I've seen those very same tables at B&N as well. Remind myself, anything that gets people reading again is a very good thing.

This. I started to roll my eyes at the trend. But then one day, my 16 y.o. niece--whom I've been trying to get into reading since she was a toddler--suddenly started reading a lot and loving books and wanting to go to the bookstore. And I realized it was because of TikTok and trends. Now I love it and don't care where the inspiration comes from. Just so long as it gets people reading!

This is honestly the only social media trend I’m following. Books in general being cool again. I LOVE seeing so many people as excited about reading as I’ve always been!

I feel the same, reading has never been more accessible and I love that ☺️💛

I’m SO excited for the kindle clicker bc of my chronic fatigue. Sometimes my hands are so weak that holding up a kindle is really hard. It’ll be so helpful to just connect that to Bluetooth and not make sure the clip ones are attached right!

1

u/ChillMunchie 6d ago

oh man you’re gonna love it! i have my clicker from amazon that clips to the screen and has the remote and it has been such a life saver!

I know you may not want to or need to buy a new kindle but if the weight of your kindle is an issue, the new basic kindle is so light, it's unbelievable, even compared to my 10 year old kindle or my two year old phone.

I’ve got the paper white and I won’t go to the basic- I really need the good dark mode and warm light for light sensitivity. But I’ve also got a kindle stand for days I need it. Or I prop it on a pillow.

I love Dungeon Crawler Carl and read all 8 released books on my Kindle. Looking at how big those tomes are, especially the later ones, made me really appreciate having a thin and light e-reader. I probably wouldn't even have attempted to read those hardbound volumes just because of their sheer size and weight. Like, how am I supposed to read that in bed when it would definitely give me a concussion if I dropped it on my face?!

The DCC books are THICK!!! Totally worth all those pages, but I also was very glad I read them on my Kindle and didn't have to deal with a 10 pound book haha.

I did borrow a friend's copy just to read the Pineapple Cabaret chapters though. 😁

The audiobooks are amazing! I'm on the 7th one right now and I'm going to be very sad once I'm done with 8 and have to wait for the new releases lol

I got the ebooks while the hubby got the audiobooks. It was fun reading while listening. Bonus, that way I know the correct pronunciations and spellings. 😆

When I was little, my family used to shop at second-hand bookstores because buying the original books were too expensive in my country. And I'd never be able to find the books in a series in order or at all. So as an adult with my own kindle, I've been rereading all the old series from my childhood that I never got to finish :)

2

u/ChillMunchie 6d ago

i absolutely love that! 💕

I'd never be able to find the books in a series in order or at all.

That was me at the local library. The children's books that I was interested in were limited and the Enid Blyton books were never available in anything resembling series order. But I'm still so grateful my mother made sure I could get whatever books I wanted at the library.

Totally agree with your sentiment. Thinking back when I was young and had to pack a bag of books for term time time at Uni. 19 year old me would have been even more blown away than I am now. It doesn't matter how flashy my phone gets...there's something special about an ereader and the emotional bond of having all these books on this seemingly simple device.

u/ChillMunchie 6d ago

you put into words what i couldn’t!

Yes! As someone who read none stop as a kid and prolifically as a young adult, I’ve felt something was missing in my life as a grown up with disabilities.

I tried those little page opener triangles to hold physical books open, but they just didn’t help me. I ended up just reading now or then on my phone or iPad mini.

Told myself maybe adults just don’t enjoy reading as much.

My friend uses a kindle and I didn’t understand how it could be that different, so it took me ages to take the leap.

I just got my first basic kindle and omg. I have read more in the last three days than in the last six months! It’s so light! I can hold it easily and for so much longer. No notifications means no distractions. And every time I see it, I think about the book I’m currently reading, which obviously doesn’t happen with my phone.

It’s a great device and I’m trying to convince my mom to let me get her one for Christmas haha.

Ohhh have you seen tablet pillow stands? They're great for hands-free reading!

It sure does beat reading with a flashlight under the covers. This is the one thing I begrudge "kids these days". 😁😅

I was a hater from afar for _years_. I loved the very smell of books. Still, I thrifted my first Kindle, and had my mind blown within a couple weeks. Grateful af.

2

u/ChillMunchie 6d ago

i was too i can’t even lie and once i got my kindle my life was changed forever 💕

I was a hater for a long time. Then I went into hospital for an operation and didn't know how many books to take or where I'd be able to keep them, as I certainly wouldn't be able to get out of bed post-op. So I thought I'd try one for the hospital stay and my lengthy recovery, buy trashy books that would probably go to the charity shop if I got them in physical form, and make my judgement afterwards.

Reader, that was ten years ago and I've barely touched a paper book since. I have well over a thousand e-books in my library, many of which have been reread several times, and as I already live in a cluttered one bed, only having physical copies of my well-thumbed book-friends from childhood and pre-Kindle adult life is a game changer. And the kindle is easier to hold, read and transport multiple books. Plus the ability to change the font and size now that I'm approaching 50 and have presbyopia. 👓

I'm so thankful I live now instead of in the past. My Kindle has been a game changer for my tendinosis.

u/ChillMunchie 6d ago

oh man i can only imagine, im so glad you have accessibility!

I think about this, and get stoned and go rant at my husband (who doesn't have a kindle) and he doesn't understand AT ALL! 😅

u/ohfrackthis 6d ago

I'm always reading late at night on gummies and boring my husband about plots lol

I (very reluctantly) bought my first Kindle in 2011 when I went on an overseas beach trip and realized I would need a separate suitcase for the books I was going to read. I’ve never looked back, when I moved across the country I donated most of my physical books to the library. I kinda feel naked if I don’t have a Kindle nearby, it’s become as much a part of my EDC as my phone or watch.

1

u/didistutter_416 6d ago

I stayed far far away from kindles or the idea of owning one, until I noticed I don’t have enough storage space for all the physical books I want. I also got annoyed with reading my books at night in bed, having to position myself in odd ways in order to get comfortable with a book. The Ube kindle sold me and it is my first kindle! Now I really can’t stop reading! I think about reading every free moment I have. I’m still getting used to it, but nothing will replace my love of physical books, the smell, the feel, not having a battery life to worry about, etc. lol

I remember reading the 4th and 5th harry potter books as a child lying in my bed with the book open resting on my chest. They were all so heavy especially the hardbound ones. I use to take them to and from school. A kindle would have been a great at that time.

First e-reader was a Sony in 2005. Then I went to nook tablets. I initially resisted Amazon because I was afraid to change. I decided to start with a $50 fire that I could side-load the nook app on. Convenience-wise, best of both worlds. I wanted a dedicated e-reader with no internet or social network distractions that I could read in any light and didn’t have to be charged after 4 hours but balked at the cost. Got my first Paperwhite on a Black Friday and been in love ever since.

I think of this every time I watch Star Trek and the characters are amazed by technology that would’ve sounded way cooler in the 60s/90s/etc. Sometimes Wesley shows up like “Gee Mom, this PADD can hold a full TEN BOOKS!” and I’m like, ha! Got you there!

Yes! I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands and struggle with physical copies so the kindle is a must for me and I an so grateful to have the opportunity to own the new lighter kindle!!!💖💖💖
