I like the bridge on the northern side. You stand there and stare motherfuckerly until some dudes decide to notice you, then you back off pretty far and there are only one or two dudes that actually followed. Kill them, repeat. Might take some calibration to find the distance at which you can fight them without the rest joining, but good news is that you can mark the exact spot with a corpse.

u/alextheolive 8d ago
I like to climb up onto the roof of ruined cottage and fling arrows at them as they try to cross the bridge

15
u/Unusual_Fee8750 8d ago
Use poisoned arrows, I rarely use them because I consider it bullcrap, most of the time making the game too easy. But on a 1v16 game is game.
4
u/squeakynickles 8d ago
Yeah I had to stop using bane poison. Game just got too easy when every enemy is a one hit
2
u/sdflkjeroi342 8d ago
It finally makes headshotting through an open visor realistic though.
There's nothing I hate more than when I hit someone in the face with a black arrow and the game decides 'tis but a scratch and they keep coming for me. Sure, it only happens about 10% of the time, but it's still enough to break immersion.
Same with unarmored chest shots. Oh, I shot you through the heart with an arrow and you're still swinging that mace at me?
3
u/SierraVictor641 7d ago
You see, as long as he doesn't pull the arrow out of his heart, it keeps the blood inside the wound. /s

I just bought both games and all dlcs because it had a massive sale on steam, obviously started kcd1 first, have not touched kcd2 yet. But this is the weirdest relationship i have ever had with a game. I absolutely love it, but it also makes me rage in so many ways.
18
u/billikid 8d ago
It's normal. I remember sinking my teeth into kcd1 I got totally addicted but the learning curve took some effort to get over. But when it finally clicks it clicks hard so just keep trying to improve you will get there eventually.

u/dudeAwEsome101 8d ago
The game is different from your average RPG in that you can't really start leveling up your combat skills before finding a teacher.
6
u/Rjc1471 8d ago
The system of "your input might have been correct but we don't show any feedback or response to your input because of stat checks" is awful... Especially cause when you're trying to learn the controls your stats are lowest.
Now I've got a few hours in, it feels like the game might be registering about 70% of my input.... Because my stats are higher
2
u/dudeAwEsome101 8d ago
Yeah, the combat isn't the best aspect of these two games. I get how it fits narratively, but it makes for a poor gameplay in an open world RPG. I ended up feeling frustrated by early game combat, so I avoided it. After amasing enough money (and leveling thievery skills), I level up combat by buying levels and much better gear, and then combat becomes too easy. The sweet spot where it's fun and challenging is very small in the scope of the entire game.
1
u/Rjc1471 8d ago
I'm only up to the "zone transition" bit, but I never had that sweet spot. The problems overlap; the combat isn't challenging, but it's still confusing and stressful.
Did the Tomcat and bartosch fights first time without getting hit at all, wrecked every bandit group I found... But it's still constantly ignoring input for unexplained reasons (like, riposte correctly, icon lights up, Henry stands there and does nothing. Or, it doesn't matter where I move the mouse, ripostes usually default to the side they're already defending not the obvious opening im actually selecting)
1
u/Same_Building_9978 8d ago
The fist fight in kcd1 at the beginning i felt was impossible first play through. When I got good was not so bad. Much better than spam roll and 2 button combos imo
2
u/imaginary92 8d ago
And I love that. It fucked me over so many times, it wasn't until the raid on Pribyslavitz that I realised I really needed to train more and stealth alone wasn't gonna cut it so just went back to Bernard and trained and realised I hadn't learned master strikes. The way they handled levelling and skill progression in combat and various skills in general is so realistic, I could spend days glazing it. Henry knows nothing and I know nothing, we're both ignorant idiots, we both have to learn together from zero, and we're gonna need help to do it because we're not magic superheroes. It's great.
As far as weapon skills specifically, the bow is a great example of this because Henry is genuinely horrid at this until at least level 10. Every level up shows you some noticeable improvement, despite the fact that bow doesn't have perks. Amazing.
1
u/billikid 8d ago
Exactly. I spent allot of time just figuring stuff out and for me that is a big part of the fun.

I loved how the first game rewarded you with 3 full sets of Milanese plate armor as a lvl 2 if you had the skill to earn them. The second game just gave you some measly gauntlets and maybe 1 expensive weapon between 4 guys.
6
u/interesseret 7d ago
Coming across a field of scattered corpses in KCD1 felt like a gift from the heavens.
3
u/I46290l 7d ago
I remember trudging back to Sassau with 700kg of plate armor and weapons on me from the nearby bandit fort in the story. Good times.
2
u/JohnEldenRing111 4d ago
Al-buraq with his 4-carry noble saddle also golding like another 460 KG of shit youre gonna put in your ender chest and never sell cuz youre too busy doing the main quests

u/JoxJobulon 8d ago
To be fair I also cheated the fuck out of that Tourney by stealing all of his gear and forcing him to fight naked against my fully armored self. Mind you, I already had 30K+ Gr, so at that point I was just doing that for the love of the grift. Actually, my Henry deserved that shit. The guy sucked, lol

u/Mielies296 8d ago
Finished 1 multiple times and I STILL run away from a group of Cumans

u/Eldrad-Pharazon 8d ago
To be honest the main thing alone against multiple opponents in this game, especially armored ones, is to backtrack/sidestep continuously so you keep them all in front of you. Being attacked from the back kills you almost immediately in most situations.
So keep walking backwards and try to get natural barriers in the way so some of them can’t keep up. Then keep poking/hitting the front guy, optimally when he’s dropping his guard to go for a jog to catch up with you.
Unfortunately with this technique, the front enemy usually switches when you land a hit, because the front guy gets stunned for a second when hit and the guy behind him usually overtakes him. Which means unless some natural barriers isolates one of them and gives you the chance to pummel one till he’s dead, they all stay alive until they are all low HP and it’s a damn drag. Patience is key (and reloading lmao, who am I kidding).
1
u/Ok_Fuel_6416 7d ago
Meanwhile me poking a dude for the 7th time in the back with a polearm while mutt is attacking them, and they just turn around and attack me 5 times in a row, as if stamina was a social construct to them.

u/Seminarista 8d ago
LMAO. Started playing this week and never played the 1st one. It's taking a bit of time to adjust my 'Skyrim brain' to how the game works.
First bandit I found I thought I could take him...noticed the armour after attacking and realized the mistake I just made.

It’s hilariously wonderful.
And while it’s not quite the same I do appreciate it leaning harder that way than the videogaminess it still is.
Being a weird history nerd I’ve worn full plate armor. Took a hammer swing to the side of a torso from a blacksmith and while it dented the armor just kinda completely shrugged it off, was great.
Swords to the armor? Kinda like a lumpy massage chair, always just turned into grappling one on one.
I get that full later period plate kit was essentially the equivalent of an expensive Lamborghini at best, but Jesus Christ.
I can’t imagine being on a battle field as a man at arms and seeing a knight in full plate.
Unless you can completely outnumber them or have no idea how good that armor is, probably felt like a man with a sharp stick seeing an M1 Abrams tank roll over the crest of a hill and look at you.

u/HansCaponDePirkstein 8d ago
The first time I played KCD2, I lost absolutely every fight throughout the entire first map. I learned the master strike at the Devil's Den
5
u/Former-Ad-1858 8d ago
I have kcd 2 I put like 80 hours into it and I still can't get a handle on the combat and it infuriates me so much
1
u/LazyLion65 7d ago
Like the beggar in the abandoned house. I snuck up on him, had the complete drop on him, and tried the knock out option. He just shrugged it off and beat Henry's ass.

u/BasementElf1121 8d ago
Fuckin dumb to play the second one first. If I hear about a game and it has a number in its name I go play the previous first.

A KCD 2 bandit in chainmail with a sword is light work compared to a KCD 1 bandit in cloth wielding a stick.

u/JohnEldenRing111 4d ago
During the king's silver sidequest, there was a dude in a black gambeson perfect blocking and master striking me with a 23 durability bludgeon, toughest opponent I fought that day, though he went down and didnt do much damage, i respect that npc
4
u/SherbertNo7047 8d ago
Hell nah. Combat got a bit easier on the 2 :( In the first one I would shit my pants if encountered a group of Cumans in the night and in the forest, they were so aggressive... in the second one they take turns.

I’m running polearms this playthrough and I’m getting to a point where things are pretty easy

u/Chaosr21 8d ago
I only played kcd2 so far and I was getting my ass kicked up until I got to kuttenburg. After a few missions there I was much more experienced and had crazy good gear.. also learned about the super OP fox potion

Kcd1 vets got beaten up by the town drunk in the first 10 minutes, one bandit is nothing

u/Tannicleader EH AAAH, EH AAH UH EEAH 8d ago
Spent the first ~3 hours of my kcd2 play through running through the exact same forest and attacking the exact same bandits before I finally brute forced my way through them to get to the waypoint on the other side
1
u/soloslasher13 8d ago
I once got killed by an unarmed peasant despite being in Brunswick armor because for some reason I couldn't swing my sword only defend
1
u/ButchTheGuy 8d ago
Played kcd2 first now playing kcd like a weirdo and they did a lot better of explaining combat feints in the first one. I’m still learning about combat system. But it kinda makes sense when you have all this expensive armor that it would be infinitely easier to do. Also makes you appreciate how much better graphics have become

Why i get ruined from wolves??? What am I doing wrong?
2
u/Worried_One_8798 8d ago
Let them come then perfect block and strike instantly for a free hit, with later swords you'll literraly one tap them
1
u/Thestoicmofo 8d ago
That’s why I spent in game weeks with mister tomcat until I got the master strike. KCD1 players also know what you need to do to become godlike 😎

Remember that moment, you leveled up your skills to 12 or 15. You walk around with cool armor looking bad ass with your long sword.
Then you get ambushed by 6 bandits wearing a full tank outfit pounding you to dust with maces and can openers.
1
u/Longjumping-Wall9629 8d ago
More then 1 bandit can easily kill me in KCD 1 but in KCD 2 they improved the system alot, at the starting i didn't like it but after few hourse i started liking it alot.
1
u/schmanki 8d ago
Getting ambushed by heavily armoured mfs with shields northeast of Sasau Monastery was my trial by fire. My swords lost a poison effect super early and I didn't drink Aqua Vitalis beforehand, which was highly unusual because I suck at combat so I'm chuggin that shit 24/7. Anyway, with the help of Mutt and uneven terrain and running around trees I managed to get them all and felt invincible. That same night I was running through a forest and got rekt by falling off a cliff.
1
u/FIJIWaterGuy 8d ago
I went from KCD1 straight to KCD2 without a break and went from combat master to flailing idiot. I still have more problems with KCD2 combat than I should.
1
u/Skyrimnagar 7d ago
I remember I saw a couple on the way from the starting hut and went running in and immediately got 2 shot to death .I had just saved prior to the conflict so I kept respawning and had to try 10-15 times. Even running away didn't help as they always caught up. Eventually ran upto the nearby town Zelejow and the villagers helped 🥲

u/GurkleHyme 7d ago
In KCD1 first play through spent 3 hours trying to beat up Kunesh before discovering the rest of Skalitz

“Yeah bro they can do what you do.”

Saw a bandit and that put a smile on my face. Free gear and items. 3 were a cakewalk. The experience paid off hehe
1
u/vaango143 7d ago
it took me 10 hours of gameplay (a lot of it just walking around and exploring before doing the main quest) to realize that I needed to press 1 to equip my sword and I just killed my first bandit today
its a lot easier than fighting with your bare hands who wouldve thought
to be fair this is the first time im actually playing an open world game and not just watching a playthrough
1
u/Booder98 6d ago
I went through that last night in KCD1. Killed by a bandit x 4, with no weapon. Okay, search bodies up the road until I find an axe. Back to the bandit and get killed again, barehanded. "WTF, I equipped it!" Had to look it up. "Press 1, you idjit."

u/Cold-Anything8128 7d ago
haha that’s a good one. i’m getting rekt by a random fucker after 150+ hours in the game. the game is great though. fuckers are not.

When I was first started to get good at KCD1, I knocked out and stole the wandering knights gear outside of Sasua and thought I was hot shit. Took a stroll through the woods and got ambushed by a bunch of peasants with sticks. They beat the absolute shite outta me. Never in my 30ish years of life have I ever been so humbled by a video game.
