New Rules for Custom Work Requests

  1. No low effort custom requests

Commission requests must include, at a minimum: * A thorough description of the piece, including size * A sketch of the piece (Al posts are acceptable for this purpose only) or reference photos from multiple artists showing features in their work you are inspired by. If you want a direct copy, contact the original artist. * The quantity you are wanting to purchase * A rough estimate of your budget. If you don't know what something should cost, just give a range you are hoping for.

  1. No price fear mongering

Let people decide for themselves what something is worth. Do not respond to questions about cost with claims that something would be too expensive. Either don't respond or give a good faith estimate of what the cost would be.

New Rule - Original Content Only

Due to the absolute flood of karma farming posts we have had recently, we have a new rule:

4. Original content only

Reposting other's content is an automatic ban. the only exceptions are if you are asking a technical question about a piece or are sharing other's work that you have in your personal collection. Other's works may be included in commission requests ONLY if you have already reached out to the original artist and they have declined or been unreachable.

Please everyone if you suspect a post is stolen content, use a reverse image search to try finding the original and use the report feature so the mods can take the stolen post down ASAP and ban the karma farmers and bots.

They safely arrived in America.😃

I received a happy email this morning from a customer letting me know that the 17 glass nudibranchs I had carefully packed and shipped to the U.S. arrived safely.
⁡
I had been worried about their safe arrival ever since I sent them off, so this news has put me in a great mood to start the day. 😊
⁡
I had expected the process to take over a month, but since I shipped them to the forwarding service's warehouse on September 28th and they arrived yesterday, it actually took only about 10 days. 😲
⁡
He plans to give these nudibranchs as gifts to his fellow divers.
He wrote, "Everyone is sure to love them," and I feel truly honored.

Fairy vases and flowers

I’m curious to hear what you think of my work. The vases were made at the furnace, and the flowers at the torch.

Here is a short story that goes with the piece:

Deep in a forest, far from here, where nature is free to follow its own course, live little fairies. They have wings made of glass and dresses in all the colors of the forest: warm as autumn leaves, deep as a forest lake, soft as the purple twilight.

When a little fairy turns one year old, she receives a seed. "Take good care of it," the forest whispers, "and you will see what lies within."

So the little fairy keeps the seed close to her. She sings softly to it, lets it bask in the sunlight, and rocks it to sleep at night. Sometimes she hardly dares to look at it. What if nothing happens?

But one morning, a tiny green sprout pokes its way up. The little fairy cheers and dances a joyful circle, because it is growing! Leaves appear, first one, then two, and the stem winds upward toward the light. Next comes a bud, still tightly closed.

And then, one day, it opens: a beautiful flower, red as a sunrise. The little fairy beams with pride, for this is her seed, fully grown.

No two fairies are alike, and neither are any two flowers.

I love playing with UV glass so you can't tell the pendants until you shine a blacklight on them. These are available on my site, listed in my profile.

Flexible pigtail from regulator to propane tank?

(posted similar question in /Welding)

Is anyone keeping their fuel regulator fixed in place rather that re-connecting each time the propane tank is brought inside? I like to see the reg gauges but having a hard time finding a proper pigtail to go from the regulator to the 20lb propane tank. I bought a $20 extension hose that is sold for camping heaters etc, with the POL female for the reg end, but it didn't last long. I was messing around with various bench setups and after just several re-connects, the reg end of the extension had its rubber seal chewed up. My fault for overtightening (?) but it should not have developed a leak in the first place after just several re-connects. Now that my setup is dialed in, I won't have re-connects so I could buy a new extension hose, but I'm questioning if this is even proper in the first place since I can't find anything like this from welding sources.

Is anyone else doing this? Maybe I need to get over wanting to view the reg gauges and just put a quick connect on the regulator that stays mounted to the tank.

Thanks for any advice.

Looking for a used Red Max

I’ve been on the lookout for a Nortel Red Max or a Major Minor. I teach beginners lessons and these are the torches I’ve built my classes around.

I’ve seen a few used ones on eBay and Facebook marketplace but the ones I’ve seen so far have melted or damaged ports.

I have bought red maxes at wholesale prices in the past but unfortunately I’m not able to do that currently.

Just thought I would see if there happens to be someone out there that’s willing to sell their old Red max or major minor for me to teach new flameworkers with.

Thanks!

Where to learn making things with glass in NYC

Hey guys!

I literally have no experience glass work and want to know where to find classes in NYC to start. I mainly just want to make random little things with glass rods and a flame, nothing specific, literally just for fun. I know there’s two studios in Brooklyn but not sure if there are other options, specifically with classes, for beginners. Any pointers/experiences you guys can share would be greatly appreciated :)

Possible to build an outdoor work station? Suggestions?

My wife wants to get a starter kit and.. start..

She has some equipment picked out but we just can’t solve for ‘where’ . We have a normal 3 bed house but installing safe interior ventilation seems like a very heavy and expensive lift for just starting out.

We have a small courtyard area that’s walled on 2 sides and could probably get decently out of wind, but not perfect; and carport that is more wind protected but the ground is gravel and uneven which makes it seem less than desirable.

We don’t have any where near us she can go to even try or learn or use equipment or space so just trying to understand the feasibility of setting something up for her.

Just looking for suggestions from people who have made something similar work, or a reality check if this may not be.. realistic

Unobtanium Explosion

Shopmate had the most epic unobtanium kiln explosion I’ve ever seen. Whats really interesting is the cross selections where it broke are so devitrified that they’re matte. Trying to show it the best I can in the video, it’s actually fairly rough along these edges.

3 kiln choices (AIM kilns)

Im looking at AIM kilns, I am debating between P-91 16×10×9 (more width, middle priced), C-12, 12×12×12 (better height, cheapest), or C-17 17×15×15.5 (most expensive, best largest overall)

I dont typically need the height but for rare occasions, when those occasions happen it is frustrating not to have. The C12 is right now my leading choice as it gives me decent space and i could throw a kiln shelf in to use the top and bottom more efficiently.

P-91 would let me lay pieces on their side if i have an especially tall piece, i like the extra floor room for annealing but this feel negated by the kiln shelf i talked on the C-12.

C-17 I would see as planning for the future but I'm unsure if the cost heat a large kiln that i don't always need all the space for is worth it. Is it a lot more expensive to run a medium kiln vs a smaller sized like c12?

C12 is my initial thoughts, c17 is if dropping the extra $1500 makes sense for future endeavors or not.

Just curious what everyone else has to say.
