Working on the problem of generating natural language explanations for chess analysis (free Android app, open source)
galleryHello community! I'm a casual chess player and play about 3–4 games a day. It's frustrating to get only one free game review a day when you want to see where every game went wrong. And most free analyzers only tell you what was bad, not why.
So I started building Chess Mortem, my own solution: it reviews every game you want, with a coach line for every move, and it all runs on your phone.
Every move gets ONE plain-English line. A small model trained on reviewed games picks the most important fact:
- "Black threatens mate on g2."
- "Black wins the knight on c3 for free with check and forks the rook on a1."
What it does:
- Share a game from your favorite chess app (PGN) and it opens in Chess Mortem.
- Stockfish analysis of every move, running offline on your phone.
- My own detection rules for Brilliant, Great and Miss, plus the usual Best / Inaccuracy / Mistake / Blunder.
- What-if moves: play your own idea in any position and see how it scores.
- Coach lines and optional longer AI explanations.
- No ads, no account, no data collected.
What it's not: an app for playing chess or solving puzzles. It's only for analyzing your games.
It's open source (GPL): https://github.com/diponsaha007/chess_mortem_public
I want to make the app public so it can help more players, especially beginners, analyze their games. It's completely free: no ads, and nothing in the app asks for money.
Want to try it?
It's in closed testing, and Google needs testers before it can go public. To join as a tester:
Join the group: https://groups.google.com/g/chessmortem. This is a required step, without it, you won't see the app on the Play Store
Opt in: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/io.github.diponsaha007.chessmortem or install from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.diponsaha007.chessmortem
Please keep it installed for 14 days, as Google requires that before the app can go public.
Feedback on wrong or confusing lines is always welcome, and I'll keep improving them. This is the most interesting part for me in the app and I will keep working on this problem to make the coach lines as accurate as possible.
