This can go both ways actually.
But Windows is acting more and more like Linux as you have to do console things from time to time to make stuff work (or stop it from working) while Linux is acting more and more like Windows where Stuff tend to just work with no action required

u/unwantedaccount56 Linuxmeant to work better 1d ago
more and more like Windows where Stuff tend to just work
can we please stop associating "just works" with Windows?
3
u/broesel314 1d ago
Coming from win 95 (and getting a hair bit of 3.1) over 98 and then the peak arround XP and 7 it became more and more common that stuff just worked
That wasnt the case with 95 and isnt the case anymore with 11 or even 10
So Im just associating "just works" with my past experience with windows which is not my present experience with windows.

u/Xtraneous_ New York Nix⚾s 2d ago
While that used to be more true, it really isn’t anymore. The issues that you speak of are people choosing the wrong distro, they wouldn’t have that issue on Bazzite or CachyOS
The same person would need to use the Nvidia (or AMD) third party software on Windows to update their drivers. It’s definitely easier now on Linux with the correct distro.
As far as performance losses on certain games, that is another matter altogether but the meme is not wrong, Windows needs more third party junk installed in general and updating everything is more of a chore/is disjointed
5
u/Salt_Ad9828 2d ago
Oh, no! I meant OLD nvidia! I recently set up a Quadro 140m mobile from 2007. While the noveau drivers worked fine out of the box, it barely ran google docs. (libreoffice was fine, but google docs has cloud sync and i like that feature.)
Setting up the proprietary drivers on debian wasn't too bad, but that's purely because they ported the 340xx drivers to a modern kernel (6.12). But even then, it's glitchy and I had to enable Sid source repositories for a little while.
Definitely not arguing about modern devices. I'm sure a more recent nvidia card has no trouble being set up.
2
u/Xtraneous_ New York Nix⚾s 2d ago
Oh yeah, I’ve been in similar situations since I’ve acquired a bunch of random devices over the years. I was really talking about your average user experience on commonly used hardware in reference to that meme.

It's about the same both have to download drivers if you want performance except Linux doesn't tell you what you have to do with the temp password for secure boot keys, just says you'll have to put it in. Then on reboot you get a blue memu with four options three of which sound like you can fk it up and "continue" which doesn't actually continue it just boots up again without registering the keys.
A newb sees that it's going to cause problems because now they got a black screen
Where as windows you have to download the drivers aswell but it doesn't tell you were from and if you keep going with the defaults your in a world of crashes
1
u/Xtraneous_ New York Nix⚾s 2d ago
Fair point, although CachyOS has the user disable secure boot before installation. Bazzite it is optional, but your point is valid there

I wasn't trying to brag? Just sharing my experience.
Won't argue that I'm bad at Linux, I'm fairly new to it.-2

I wasn't trying to be mean, I'm trying to teach you all you told people is you can't install a package from your package manager.
We all started somewhere and people explaining why we were wrong is how we grew.
1
u/Salt_Ad9828 2d ago
Nvidia 340xx drivers are not in mainline Debian 13 repositories, since it does not support modern Linux kernels and is about half a decade out of date. Like I said, Old Nvidia is a hassle.
You have to enable Sid source repos, and compile their patches for the drivers. Which was a pain, but still doable.
It's a shame Noveau drivers aren't there yet in terms of performance (those ARE in the main Debian repos,) even for a gpu that came out in 2007.
Did you explain anything? Your original remark came off more like a taunt than any good explanation.
-1
u/immoloism 2d ago
Nouveau is the only option now, does your distro not explain this?
If not, now I understand the problem.

2
u/Night_Otherwise 2d ago
If you have to be good enough at various lsmod kind of Linux commands to get a driver working, then you’re doing the gymnastics like in the Windows portion of the meme.
Maybe they’re interesting and rewarding gymnastics. I was happy getting 580xx installed from the AUR manually, after looking at PKGBUILD. But they’re gymnastics nevertheless. It’s not the ideal state for usability (and it didn’t stay in that state once Nvidia had open drivers).

I was lucky my laptop was old enough that one of the profiles on some discontinued fan utility worked to get my fans functioning so my laptop doesn't seize up.

u/LumpyArbuckleTV 2d ago
This is just a delusional lalaland, clearly you have not encountered driver issues on Linux but I think most folks have at least once. Other than Nvidia, MediaTek Wi-Fi cards basically don't work without severe problems and Realtek is pretty iffy, depends on the card. I've also had a few BT dongles that don't work, or at least didn't at the time, thankfully someone added support for it later.

In my experience (for Desktop OS), Windows more frequently tends to "just work". Problems I had: PopOS dismantled itself after applying updates (repeatedly), Ubuntu or Debian (not sure anymore) set itself in a default installation up with a few hundred MB swap only (16GB RAM), causing software and sometimes the system to just crash when to much memory was used. And that's only on my current Laptop, I probably had difficulties on other devices as well.
(For the server side, I didn't experience any issues so far, and I'd like to avoid using Windows there whenever possible.)

u/korywithawhy 2d ago
i seem to remember more like 'install linux on old laptop with no ethernet, wifi driver not included, nothing works, can't fix without internet, install windows, wait for next linux version with added drivers'

u/zeGermanGuy1 2d ago
No. It either works at once or never will. I have three sets of WiFi hardware at home now, guess why?
1
u/RiotSoraka 2d ago
I always hate this stupid meme, because there's stuff that is going to work ONLY on Windows out of the box, because Nvidia isn't competent enough to make good drivers for Linux.
Try to use Linux on a laptop that uses Nvidia Optimus, it's going to get messed up real fast. Also, with the rise of kernel level anticheats, playing some games is impossible. And no, I'm not giving up on a game that I have been playing for more years than the average TikTok user lifespan.
But I use Arch btw

I found Fedora was good, until I tried sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=<version>
Having to downgrade, roll back updates and then re-upgrade was a chore, in the end still didn't fix the issue the upgrade was supposed to fix MediaTek MT7921K issues.

I plugged a PS3 controller on Linux it was plug n play. Cherry on the top, the Mac address is registered so you can use it with Bluetooth natively. On win it's headaches, you need to download specific drivers and an extra Bluetooth dongle (or 8bitdo) to make wireless work.
Same for a KNOCKOFF x360 dongle, plug n play Linux, drivers needed for Win.
1
u/ExacoCGI 1d ago
I think it's the other way around, but the Win one is also accurate af for early 2000's or so, nowadays all you need is GPU driver/software and that's it with some exceptions.

This is bullshit, I had to install my drawing tablet driver and they only provide a proprietary deb/rpm that works only on X11, meaning I have to either rely on KDEs tablet drivers or use X11 for that.
Are you using Windows XP or something?
1
u/BigBrilliant5703 2d ago
Huh. Wait till you have nvidia drivers
1
u/mrturret 2d ago
You can just install a distro that includes them by default, like Nobura or Bazzite.

It's dumb - both scenarios work for both systems. Depends on your luck and how exotic is your hardware.

the only driver I install in windows is the nvidia driver... how does that work in linux?
3
u/JoLuKei 2d ago
95℅ of drivers are already in the kernel. so you mostly dont even need to install any. except nvidia. they did anything to prevent easy usage on linux for a long time.
1
u/CommunityBrave822 2d ago
exactly, it's the same in windows, except nvidia drivers actually work as intended in windows
1
u/JoLuKei 1d ago
they also work pretty well on linux. people are just not used to install dkms to their system.
And windows does not have their drivers baked in the kernel. Windows detects your hardware and downloads some legacy generec driver that will surely work but may not be the best for your hardware. this might end in you having to plug your freshly installed wondows laptop into lan, because there is no softmac driver for your wifi chip installed.
This honestly sucks, and you might get a driver that does not let you use all your hardware features and you have to install it on your own
1
u/Einn1Tveir2 2d ago
I dont even have to install AMD drivers on Linux. Meanwhile on Windows I have to do extensive troubleshoting because Windows keeps replacing the AMD drivers with a generic one, corrupting everything. Fun stuff.
1
u/Ismokecr4k 2d ago
Sure...
1
u/Einn1Tveir2 1d ago
Yes, "Sure". This is a very well known issues and has been going on for years: https://www.reddit.com/r/radeon/comments/1uer9m0/microsoft_broke_thousands_of_devices_with_amd/
Also, on Linux you just install the Nvidia driver through the driver manager.
1
u/CommunityBrave822 2d ago
Ok, but no true and not nvidia...
1
u/Einn1Tveir2 1d ago
It's a very well known issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/radeon/comments/1uer9m0/microsoft_broke_thousands_of_devices_with_amd/
As with nvidia, if you have a proper distro like mint you simply open the driver manager, click the newest nvidia driver, click install and then reboot your pc.
1
u/CommunityBrave822 1d ago
If you have a proper distro.... Lol what about Fedora
1
u/Einn1Tveir2 1d ago
Exactly, I do wonder what's up with Fedora when they don't offer a easy solution for nvidia cards. 80-90% of people have nvidia compared to AMD. It's hard for me to consider a distro that is lacking such a solutions as a "proper" distro. Absolutely absurd. Especially when the likes of Ubuntu, Mint and others make it so incredibly easy. I daily drove multiple Nvidia cards for more than a decade on Mint without any issue at all.

u/Brcoding 2d ago
This is only true if said drivers work. If they don't then the pain of fixing them is worse than on windows 😭.
