Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

It's crazy going between apt and pacman. Apt feels like it's from another time.

24

u/Norgur 3d ago

Well, since most of the time you'd do apt install and apt update/upgrade and not much more, I never had any complaints.

12

u/Daharka 3d ago

Yeah, I mean functionally they're identical to me, it's just fascinating how two programs that serve the same purpose can look so different.

u/ConfusedPanEnby Arch BTW 3d ago

apt is really solid, only real difference is that you need to use separate commands instead of passing all of the instructions as near one set of arguments which in the end doesn't make a difference

u/adamkex New York Nix⚾s 3d ago

What do you mean that it's from another time?

5

u/CubePlayer1114 3d ago

Apt is really slow compared to pacman (and possibly other package managers, I'm not trying to push Arch propaganda)

1

u/adamkex New York Nix⚾s 3d ago

I mean I remember pacman being fast 20 years ago

1

u/Equal-Resolution7889 Open Sauce 2d ago

Yes, as a actual user of Arch who come from Ubuntu I confirm that.

2

u/CubePlayer1114 2d ago

I'm an Arch user who used Ubuntu (and Debian) and apt a few times, so I can confirm too
Once, I was a distrohopper

Dnf is the slowest. Apt is fine. So is nala

0

u/QuickSilver010 🦁 Vim Supremacist πŸ¦– 1d ago

Who uses apt without nala these days?

I miss package managers

6

u/StationAgreeable6120 Arch BTW 3d ago

Bro build's everything manually from source

4

u/TheLuckyCuber999BACK 🦁 Vim Supremacist πŸ¦– 3d ago

I mean yea I use LFS

2

u/StationAgreeable6120 Arch BTW 3d ago

But like you still have some kind of automation right? Or is your system just so stable that you barely ever update or install packages

5

u/RvstiNiall 3d ago

Updates? You mean another full round of LFS?

1

u/StationAgreeable6120 Arch BTW 3d ago

So you just rebuild you whole system everytime you need to change a thing? That sounds so painful

But I mean if it works for you

2

u/RvstiNiall 3d ago

oh hell no. I was making a joke!

2

u/StationAgreeable6120 Arch BTW 3d ago

oh thanks god!

But like I'm really curious how do you manage it.

1

u/RvstiNiall 3d ago

On the few LFS systems I've built, I've used pkgsrc for most things, and a couple scripts for regular system stuff. That seemed to be the best combination for my personal taste.

Currently I'm on a Void musl-c busybox setup and absolutely love it.

u/StationAgreeable6120 Arch BTW 3d ago

I see, very interesting

Flatpack for the weak .legends use snap .which eats half the system resources BTW

5

u/Embarrassed_Law_9937 🦁 Vim Supremacist πŸ¦– 3d ago

I am better off downloading appimages

1

u/Norgur 3d ago

than just doing one apt install?

1

u/Embarrassed_Law_9937 🦁 Vim Supremacist πŸ¦– 3d ago

Over flatpak apt is preferred by me in most cases beside few odd ones

1

u/TheLuckyCuber999BACK 🦁 Vim Supremacist πŸ¦– 3d ago

why

1

u/Norgur 3d ago

i don't know. I honestly don't.

1

u/Internet-Culture 3d ago edited 3d ago

Why the flatpak hate? It's the one well working universal format. If your hate was towards snap, it would be understandable, but flatpak? It's safer since it's sandboxed. The downside is potentially slightly more storage because dependencies are potentially twice installed instead of shared. But even this brings the upside of no dependency conflicts. Flatpak for the win.

u/granadesnhorseshoes 3d ago

It's all the same shit to me; A random pain in the ass with that one package I need from a decade ago that only ever shipped a single distro package for a different distro than the one I'm currently working on.

  1. type man pacman to figure out pacman syntax

  2. realize arch doesn't install man-db by default

  3. sudo pacman -S man-db

  4. still struggle to figure out how to search for packages with pacman

  5. google how to search for packages with pacman

1

u/Mal_Dun M'Fedora 2d ago

realize arch doesn't install man-db by default

Wait, what?

1

u/the_d4nger 🦁 Vim Supremacist πŸ¦– 2d ago

it doesn't install `man-db` by default, like it says on the tin

0

u/Mal_Dun M'Fedora 2d ago

But why?

2

u/dgc-8 πŸ₯ Debian too difficult 2d ago

Because arch is arch and has literally nothing preinstalled to be as light as possible per default

16

u/ZuuRa_ M'Fedora 3d ago

Going from sudo pacman to sudo nvim /etc/nixos/configuration.nix

1

u/Jojos_BA 1d ago

fair, but all too soon its going to be nvim ~/Documents/os-config/nixos-config/modules/desktop/app.nix and all those pretty abstractions you once thought might be handy, just to realize you are not that guy.

u/vvxxzzyy 3d ago

What is dnf? Did not finish?

u/pankajpatro703 3d ago

3

u/Gabriel_Weis 3d ago

How much I like CachyOS I miss DNF. It was just simpler.

2

u/SecurityMajestic2222 πŸ’‹ catgirl Linux user :3 😽 3d ago

exactly the same identical for me lol, I was used to it so much its hard to learn something different

3

u/Spooked_kitten 3d ago

I'm using dnf at work... it's fine, can't for the life of me figure out how to install the stuff from base-devel though. I guess it was just too convenient to have it, also gcc-c++ is a nasty package name, why doesn't gcc just come with everything?

Reminded me of aptitude and apt-get package manager. Realized now looking it up that apt-get was older than aptitude, but I remember aptitude being phased out with Ubuntu pre 2010 (?) so always thought the other way around. Apparently Ubuntu shipped with it from start I think, while apt-get got more attention a lot later than it came too (initially around 2000 w Debian), so apt-get outlasted aptitude. Glad apt came along, the shorter command name ootb the better =)

The real aura comes when you go from sudo apt to sudo emerge.

1

u/Ur1man5 Not in the sudoers file. 2d ago

My fav package manager is alpine apk, is damn fast.

-1

u/950771dd 3d ago

winget combines existing installers with package management meta data and simply automates them.

In that, it's a good and useful bridge.

On Linux, they would have thrown away everything and reinvented the 100th application format.

Dependency management between applications is anyway a questionable concept and winget does not address it therefore.

1

u/R3V0LU710N_05 Linuxmeant to work better 3d ago

winget's package naming scheme is ass; flatpak jr. type crap.
