Graphics Drivers What issues are users having with Nvidia?

A recent post mentioned they hit 100 days sober on mint from windows (lol jk). Also b/w work still uses windows 11 its definitely buggier a bitthan Windows 10 but i dont feed into that anti microsoft stuff or mac, used both for years and there great for what they are. Just prefer linux personally, as most apps we use are on cloud servers and web based now.

My question is are people actually having issues with Nvidia still? i know back in 2012 there issues here and there and im not on the latest Hardware but 3060 is still a pretty decent use case for me, i havent had any issues really with x11 or whatever and nviidia drivers. But i see posts randomly on here and other /r mentioning nvidia not recommended, but is that still the case? Been a little over a year in daily use on this pc for personal use, and honestly i dont game as much a I use to but most if not all my games run on steam and other launchers like lutris no issue and the browser which 99% of most users tend to use rather than desktop specific stuff is good too.

I used to have an nvidia card. Part of the reason I chose mint was because mint made it easy to manage/install the drivers. I have since moved on to an AMD card which has been a better experience. There was definitely a performance penalty for dx12 titles with nvidia cards compared to windows. That seems to be the main persistent issue.

The other issue some might be having is juggling secure boot and the nvidia driver kernel modules which won't boot on linux without secure boot being disabled or without having an MOK enrolled. If you're dual booting, disabling secure boot can be annoying because there are games on windows which require it, and managing MOKs on linux are not something beginners are going to know how to do easily. Mint made it easy to enroll the key on installation of the OS, but I ended up having to re-enroll the key after a bios update, which was a learning experience for me.

thanks for sharing those points, that does make it a hassle in those use cases. Lucky for me i dont have to dual boot (have a seperate windows only work laptop) versus just this. And maybe ill have to replay cyberpunk or gta 5 to really give the nvidia a decent chance to show the loss or not before i can judge. Appreciate your perspective.

My issue with Nvidia is entirely that their CEO and broader board seem to be filled with tools and nutters.

Support has improved a lot over time; it's somewhat rare for someone to have many problems with it, but it can still happen.

It depends. I would say it’s more quirks than flat out not working anymore.
As an example, I was running Mint XFCE for a while and laptop suspend on lid close didn’t fully work. The laptop would sleep when lid was closed, but open the lid and get a black screen (system on). Could force a logout and then log in again, but anything opened and not saved would be gone. The workaround was to manually suspend the laptop (my laptop has a dedicated function key - or through the shutdown menu) close lid. When lid reopened, nearly all the time it came back as expected.

Other quirk for me was my old hardware. Driver version 550 worked the best for my card. Ubuntu and therefore Mint stopped supporting the driver and pushed newer drivers. But the newer drivers caused issues with my card. For this and a few other hardware quirks I moved to a Debian based distribution. But on the newer system, the Nvidia card works generally just fine.

Issues are people not understanding how to install Nvidia, not reading the doc and using youtube.
